Pizza and Smarties

Simon Mayo|08:10 UK time, Friday, 27 May 2011

Pizza and Smarties. Yes really. Top meal.

Last night it was down to me and child 2 as to what we should eat. I enjoyed the barbecued duck salad of course (the sauce was every bit as good as we said) but, as is the nature of salad, it wasn't filling. So more was required and, shamefully, the order was placed for the man on a moped. And when pudding was called for, the chocolate beans were the only thing handy. I see it as preparing child 2 for student life and not in anyway lazy, bad habit-forming gluttony.

Feeling portly, it is a 2 show day to run off the excess. First up a live movie show from the Phoenix cinema in Finchley north London with guest Noel Clarke. He stars in a new prison drama called (ahem) 'Screwed' and is always an engaging guest. He writes and directs as well as this acting thing so he should be a crowd pleaser. We are relying on him really as otherwise it's just Mark and me.

Then the taxi bike I think for the brief darting run through the bank holiday get-out-of-town-quick brigade to R2 central and the all-request-Friday. Even though it is confession/quiz/guest free, I love the Friday show and hope it gives that Friday feeling to everyone, even if they have a dull weekend on the horizon. Your opening song idea will be put to the jury (Me and Andy I imagine). We will vote (my vote counting for 1 and a half) and then we're on. Let's assume that Rush's "Spirit of Radio" is out as we moshed to it on Wednesday. Everything else is up for grabs!

Have a crisis-free and gently reassuring Friday, see you after 2&5.

Still internetless at home (and it is very painful) so will have many Wittertainment (no other film review shows.......) to catch up on. Will definitely be reconnected next Thurs at the latest. Have a long list of music as recommended by you peeps to explore/download.

  • Comment number 5.

Morning folks... first out of the trap today Harry!

I don't think you can go wrong for the ARFO by admitting that a bit of guitar-driven seventies glam pop is the best way to start the weekend. So I offer...

LOVE IS LIKE OXYGEN - Sweet.

But I also think there's nothing wrong with suggesting one of the presenter's favourite songs in the hope that it might fall upon fertile ground, so my alternative aelection would have to be

STAY WITH ME - The Faces

    See you all later....

  • Comment number 6.

Morning Lord Ammo, team, NYM and budgie-smuggling wedgie-enhanced bloggers,

Something loud and lively and energising for the ARFO, you say?

    Something head-nodding and steering-wheel bashing?

Something for the jet-setters heading off for half-term?

Something French for the weekend, sir?

Something for the G8 in Deauville?

Something for those revising their avoirs and etres for GCSE's?

    I have just the thing..

CA PLANE POUR MOI - Plastic Bertand

Good Morning Simon, team and Blogpoppets

No ARFO suggestion from me today. It's my GB's 21st birthday (how did that happen?) and we're all off to see 'We will rock you', so I won't get to hear any of the show. I did think about requesting a Queen song, but CLP has that pretty much sewn up this morning, so I didn't think there would be much chance of it getting played.

Back in a bit with a review of last night...

    Addressing the jury....

Dear Sirs, It has come to my attention, that we never get an ELO opener as an ARF.

Please consider my plea and give *** Twilight *** by ELO a fair trial.

Its one of my guilty pleasures that I think should be shared amongst others.

Go on, go on, go on...

    MTF.xx

  • Comment number 12.

    Morning everybody,

How about YOU TOOK THE WORDS RIGHT OUT OF MY MOUTH - Meat Loaf for the ARF Opener?

  • Comment number 13.

    Morning all

OK, if you want the ultimate, head-nodding opener, it's probably the Quo's "Whatever You Want". Ultimate as in the tempo is perfect for a sustained nodding session from start to finish without causing either injury or difficulty sustaining the nodding tempo to the bitter end.

However, there are much better Quo songs available than that one.

I submit for consideration by the jury "DOWN DOWN"" as an alternative containing the occasional quicker-tempo "duh, duh, duh" followed by a key change (?) to add some steering-wheel thumping variety to the nodding process. Think of it a bit like the roundabouts on the A1 which make it a more enjoyable drive than the M1 :-)

Failing that...TIE YOUR MOTHER DOWN by Queen please.

  • Comment number 14.

    As an extra choice.....

How about a bit of Scissor Sisters and ....

    I DONT FEEL LIKE DANCING!

Anybody know what's happening on Chris Evans show? Radio 5's Vassos Alexander left their breakfast show today and the word is he is joining the Radio 2 breakfast show - are we losing Johnny Saunders?

So who sang "Can't Find My Way Home" at the Clapton/Winwood gig, and did Winwood get much chance to strap on his nylon-struing Telecaster?

Haven't got the radio on here Deebee. Happy 21st to your GB :)

Beautiful day here, just that darned wind.

Well another b/h is upon us ( sorry Mo ) and that means a mad day out on the roads again. I always feel so sorry for Sally Traffic when its so busy. • Comment number 20.

Morning all, it seems my 'pooter does not refresh even though I tell it to, so am as usual late to the party.

Not that on a Friday, the early bird gets the worm of course.

I would like one of the following:

In honour of the ROYAL visit this morning 'DON'T STOP ME NOW' BY QUEEN (can r2 play this twice in one day?)

Or MORE THAN A FEELING by BOSTON - which is quite literally, Bostin' OR

THE DANDY WARHOLS 'BOHEMIAN LIKE YOU' which I like to think of as my song and it's a great build-up beat kinda song, perfecto for a Friday mosh.

Enjoy your day everyone, and the extra day on Monday (even though some people here have to work, poor lambs.

    Have a nice day y'all

Are racist, sexist, homophobic, sexually explicit, abusive or otherwise objectionable

Contain swear words or other language likely to offend.""

Right, solicitors have been instructed, things are in train and we are off to the future ex-bolthole to do a bit of clearing out over the weekend. A mighty relief that we have a buyer but still feel a bit sad. Just London to sell now (obviously, just our wee bit of it, not the whole of London). Oh, and find somewhere to buy. Simples.

#28 B&B, I can't explain it. I don't see how it could offend anyone. And, even if it did, we're all going to be offended by something; we just have to move on.

Personally, I think no one should be allowed to say "Margaret Thatcher" ever again but I know they will and I just have to accept ths verbal assault. But, if the moderator is reading this, please add it to your list of offenseive words and phrases.

#7 Deebee... You may have seen We Will Rock You before, but if not, you'll love it! It is my second favourite musical after Les Mis and I'm embarrassed to say that I've seen it sixteen times and will see it another four times over Christmas and New Year... as both me and OH have always loved Queen... obviously best with Freddie, but Paul Rodgers was good when he has toured with them!

  • Comment number 39.

OK, need to do some more work but I'll be back later.

If anyone has access to online music, and hasn't heard them before, can I recommend The Felice Brothers? Lead singer sounds a bit like Dylan.

  • Comment number 40.

#35 - Brillant Harry! I also suspect that the word "Tebbit" may cause some upset, so we'd better list that one too.

  • Comment number 41.

#36 And there will be a shabby man in a mac, fedora and dark glasses going through your bin or leaning against the lamp post opposite your house, observing your comings and goings. You will feel hunted and haunted until eventually you are pleading with Peta Womble to let you free.

Oooo - did anyone see either of the progammes on The Carpenters last night? Blimey - they were a talented pair. Such a sad story about Karen, and Richard always seems a little frightening, but blimey - put it down to rehearsal after rehearsal after rehearsal, and a good backing band maybe, but by 'eck they were talented! Their timing and their harmonies were impeccable live... there was on ebit when one of their backing singers hit slightly off key, and Karen looked over from the drums, and when the line came around again in the next chorus nobody missed! Very talented kids.

B&B and Mo - interesting indeed - was wondering myself if Vassos will be doing sport on Breakfast ... does he do anything else that might fit in with the current team?

To be honest, and Toots hinted at this yesterday I think, the relationship between Big Boy Evans and Cowering Saunders is not one I find particularly appealing.

Anyway - gossmongering aside - Happy Fridays to fellow Blogpoppets and safe journeys for all travellers - Gill, JohnB, MTF, AlexG et al.

We're staying put - comedy gig tonight at the Arts Centre down the road, tomorrow OH's occasional 60's band have a gig down another road just south of the city. On Sunday I'm doing roast for at least 10.

WHAT IS LIFE - GEORGE HARRISON

To be honest, I hold out little hope of a repeat turn for wearing the ARF crown and I think those bloggers who haven't yet had an ARF are more deserving. None more so than the lovely Tooth Fairy. At this rate, she will be entering the twilight of her years before she hears her song on Drivetime. Go on, Nice Young Man called Andy - you know it makes sense!

  • Comment number 54.

For the first tune on the show today how about -

#24 I use the phrase frequently - can't imagine anyone being offended by it. Maybe I know all the wrong people!

Talking of R Cheney, I emailed him once. It was a ranty (but polite) email. Didn't get a response. Wonder if I'm now on a banned list :-)

  • Comment number 56.

#43 B&B, I have "Hejira" as an mp3 on my hardrive and I listened to it quite a bit last week when the bloggers were discussing Joni. I copied it onto to here because, for some reason, "Song for Sharon" isn't available on Spoify.

Rather taken with the Felice Brothers first album right now.

#48 KatyMatey... I agree with you about the relationship between Chris Evans and Johnnie Saunders... it's uncomfortable at times! Johnnie seems such a soft natured guy and it often sounds like Chris takes the mickey out of of him and belittles him quite a lot and Johnnie just takes it all... I'm sure if Chris told Johnnie to jump, he would ask "how high?"!

Thank goodness it was Chris, (and not Johnnie) who made an absolute fool of himself the day he was talking a load of rubbish about the life-cycle of bees!!!

  • Comment number 59.

#56 Harry - I'll have a listen. If push ever formally came to shove, Hejira may well be my favourite album of all. So beautifully well-written..."he's staring a hole in his scrambled eggs while he's watching the waitress's legs...". And musically so 'together'. It's like Kerouac set to music. Only better. "Listen.... strains of Benny Goodman coming through the snow and the pinewood trees. I'm porous with travel fever, but I'm so glad to be on my own". Sigh

Wow! Genesis (wardrobe song) on Ken Bruce - he must be getting into holiday mood.

On the subject of chocolate and pizza, I had one in a roadside place in Tuscany - it was fairly gross but the kids lapped it up - taking left-overs back to our gaff for the week where it stank the place out when it was re-heated for brekkie next morning (yes there is no end to their depravity).

Speaking of which, no offence taken re #24 but lots taken from #35 and the MT word....is it still A L I V E?

Reminds me of a friend's son of about 8-9 who wanted to shout an obscenity at his mother and knew it should begin with an 'f' so came out with 'You're a fussy fat frog!' we nearly died laghing!!

    Back to the keyboardcoalface.

ARF in the bath for me, as per usual with a small sherry, it's the only way when you are going nowhere on a BH weekend and listening to all those caravanners motorway miseries ;-0

Wah hey now he's playing Steve Gibbons Band & Tulane (local Brummies) the Bruce Meister is on fire today!! Ugh but here comes Jeremy Vine - the Uriah Heep (the obsequious slimey character from the Charles Dickens book, not the band) of the Radio world.

  • Comment number 65.

#48 & #58 and others ..... There is something going very wrong with CE's Breakfast show. The tone is becoming quite nasty. When CE was doing Drivetime, it seemed he'd learned a little humility during his time of exile. This has now evaporated and he's returning to type. He seems to try to make a fool of Johnny to increase his own status and I don't feel at all comfortable listening. Poor Johnny; obviously not the brightest of men but he does seem to be a gentle soul inspite of his competitiveness.

#13 - Ken two cracking choices - I love Queen and was in my element listening to Chris's show this morning. Just a wee word, I tramp up and down the A1 from Lincolnshire to Sconnie Botland fairly regularly and there aren't that many roundabouts these days. I know you can get from Peterborough all the way past Newcastle without any roundabouts these days - probably quicker and safer but not nearly as interesting.

  • Comment number 74.

#65 - I agree Harry (I thought you had work to do!!)...I think it was last week we were discussing this a bit. I have largely given up listening but for maybe once or twice a week, and I like Chris Evans a lot. I can understand those who don't like him not tuning in, but I like him and like the show and I have drifted away. And I think it is because somehow the show is getting a bit harsh for 6.30am... musically it is too much for me (I'm driving early, I am awake, but I don't need hitting with a tea tray to keep me awake), and conversationally it is getting quite abrasive. I'm not keen on Moira Stuart, with her posh-voice way of reading the news followed by her "I'm street smart" jive conversational tone with Chris - it just sounds false. CE is a very sharp cookie, and a very quick thinker, and sometimes he "heads off on one" when really, he should chill out, sit back, remember that most people are staggering about in a half-trance at that time of day, and play a Steely Dan track. AND - I think he has always been very good with the kids he has on, talking to them on their level but without patronising and mocking, but recently he's been getting a bit sarcastic, which isn't nice. By eight o'clock maybe there's space for a bit of shouting and overly thumping 80s hits, but not for me at 6.30.

  • Comment number 75.

#70 I wonder if there should be a P and H in that company name?

On the CLP / JS issue - I'm not so sure that JS is quite the lap dog people are making out, although I did think CE was out of order earlier in the week. However JS does tend to try too hard and blurt out whatever comes to mind, trying to be slightly too clever, but just not quite making it.

B&B - what did you say at #57 to get modded? I did read it when you first posted and thought it was quite innocuous. You are obviously being a bad bunny today.

On the CE conversation, I was a stalwart defender of Chris. I loved his Drivetime show (although I now prefer the new incumbent and the format of the show) and thought he would be brilliant at Breakfast. I don't get to listen to much of the show but I am finding what I do hear to be ever so slightly tedious. I think the arrogance is returning and he is at risk of losing his fan base. His lack of interest in his blog & bloggers is an example of this. Shame really - he is a talented man.

#78 MCW - I also think JV plays good tracks. And he is a big fan of The Smiths, as far as I can see, which is good for me. Sadly, he is then followed by Steve Wright, who - for all his years on the radio - tends to play the most lightweight twaddle of any show on Radio 2, and even then talks all over it with his silly co-presenters. IMHO that is. Are we a bit too demanding sometimes???

#81 - for "use" please read "us"...

B&B .......... you've been modded again at #57 ............ which one was that?

So, about last night... Well - it was fantastic! Surprise number one, it started dead on 7.30. I've been to so many gigs where you turn up at the time written on the tickets, then have to wait (sometimes up to an hour!) for anything interesting to happen. Surprise number two, the support act was Andy Fairweather Low. He was very good - he did a mix of 60s, bluesey and folky type numbers. He did a really good rendition of the Amen Corner song 'Paradise' - in fact I had to Google it later (other search engines, etc...) to see if he'd written it (he hadn't). And of course he sang his hit, 'Wide eyed and legless'.

Then it was the main act, and surprise number 3 - Steve Winwood was on for the whole set! Must admit I'd only expected him to join Eric Clapton for about 4 or 5 songs. And they were brilliant - well, I think they've worked together quite a bit in recent years. Quite a lot of what they played I didn't recognise - it was quite bluesey in style, with a bit of rock thrown in. There was one amazing instrumental piece that I'm going to have to try and track down - it went on for about 10 minutes and had me with my jaw open in amazement, it was that good! And they did my favourite of Steve's songs 'While you take a chance', which I've tried a few times to get played as the ARFO. My only slight disappointment was that they didn't do 'Layla'.

And Alex G, the drummer was Steve Gadd - and yes, he was excellent.

#17 I think it was Steve who took the lead on that one, Ken, but I'm not 100% sure - they tended to take it in turns. And your other question is a bit too technical for me... But there were loads of guitar changes, so one of them may well have been a Telecaster.

And now I think I'm a little bit in love with Steve Winwood...

Sounds like a great night, Deebee! And another one to look forward to tonight! You party animal.

Just popped next door. The blog from yesterday has the grand total of 35 comments. Someone has made the point that there is more discussion about the breakfast show over here! If any of the BBC team are reading this, have a quiet word in Mr E's shell-like and ask him to re-engage.

I have a half day today so will be out of here in 30 mins or so! A quick whizzle round the house to get it tidy for a viewing later ( and one tomorrow), then off to the imminently ex-bolthole. Tomorrow's viewing is first thing - do hope the pet nanny gets there before the estate agent, otherwise the cats are going to be demanding their breakfast from him!!

#83 - blimey - I hadn't noticed that. I really can't remember. If anyone can, I'd be interested! I don't think it was Arsene Wenger? And see #51 above... use of the "a" word by LuciesMum remains unmodded. I dunno - I think I've been quite a good boy today, apart from the gratuitous reference to a town north of Sheffield.

#81 you won't catch me complaining about any post unless it's a personal attack, which we don't see on here thank goodness

#65 I too am drifting away from CE. Something has changed that I haven't been able to put my finger on so my finger has hit the radio dial instead

#57 what have you said now, ARER!

Where are all the ARFO requests today? Has everyone started their bank holiday early?

    Afternoon all

On the CE debate, I'm afraid I've gone back to 'Today' on R4; mainly because, as has been said previously, his arrogance seems to be re-appearing and he is far too fond (IMO) of repeating his opinions about everything and being very 'shouty'. I hope someone does rein him in a little, because I think he is a very talented broadcaster.

    #81 - what's wrong with Penistone ARER?

I wasn't going to suggest an ARFO today, having had 2 menshes this week, but if it's not too late -

YOU'RE MY BEST FRIEND - Queen

    Hello Everyone

For an AFRO I'd like to suggest Beggarman's Disco by Smoove & Turrell. Not hugely well known but a brilliant song to get you grooving in the kitchen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnahB3SYN84

And for those Queen and Freddie fans check out Steve Riks on youtube - he does a great impersonation.

    Happy Friday all.

As we're a bit thin on the ground for ARFOs today, some insirpatino from "On this day in Music History:

May 27th 1957 THAT'LL BE THE DAY - Buddy Holly & the Crickets (first released)

May 27th 1983 HAND IN GLOVE - The Smiths (reached number one)
