Morning to bloggers everywhere. Refreshed? Energised? A winning smile playing on your lips as you contemplate the opportunities of the day? Thought so.
Best moment of the day (so far) from child 3 as we walked downstairs this morning "Personally speaking , from a government point of view, I'm not impressed by the Chinese". If my old friends at 5 Live want him to book him as a foreign policy wonk, that's fine with me but it'll cost you. Chatham House, here we come.
Loved hearing the nominees for the Radio 2 Folk Awards with Mike last night, lots of fine albums to get hold of there. Good stuff, as Mike would say. Nice to hear Kris Drever get a nod in "Folk Singer of the Year" category, top man indeed. And this weekend I get to go and see the much nominated Bellowhead who do one heck of a good show. They are up for Best Group, Best Album, Best Live Act with front man Jon Boden up for "Folk Singer of the Year". Impressed yet? Watch some footage of them (you know where) and you'll see what I mean.
Confession was fun yesterday and this idea of a team confession week is a good one I feel. Clearly Sally has a lot to go at here, in fact could do a week on her own, but we'll be fair about it and do one each. December I reckon. And you bloggers need to confess too you know...
Let's do BEAR related tunes today please. Pudsey will dominate things tomorrow so let's get things going today with all things BEAR.
Cheesecake beckons tonight with Nigel! Already feeling hungry. Have a slimline, calorie burning Thursday. See you at 5.05.

At 17:01 18th Nov 2010, John B Good wrote:I’d like to make a confession. Children in Need has never really got my interest or touched me. Somehow the sight of Terry Wogan (who I’m not a big fan of) and all the other celebs parading on primetime TV didn’t actually connect with me, nor shed any light on where the money is going and how it will be of any benefit. Not sure if the reason was their bad communication, or my ignorance, or just being male. Sorry, it’s just the way it is.
But I know it’s a controversial thing to say on this blog, and I wanted to be honest, so please bear with me (no Pudsey pun intended), and read my story below.
Last night I was travelling back from the England game at Wembley. You know the feeling – a damp November night, dark and rainy, 85,000 fans filling the nasty northwest London streets , being funneled onto crowded platforms, waiting for trains which were late, cancelled, or already too packed to get on. An overwhelmingly male environment, without trouble but a bit sombre. England had lost to the French, it’s 10.30, and we all just wanted to get home and to a warm bed.
In the packed train carriage, as most people just read the recycled battered copies of Metro or the Standard or texted and phoned the usual messages of ‘’I’m on the train, see you in about an hour”, the voices of two very drunk men rose above everything else. Not just drunk – institutionally, aggressively, clinically alcoholic, recognisable in their voices, etched on their faces. As the train rumbled on, their post-match analysis of the efforts of Fabio, Stevie G and Crouchy continued to be fuelled by the cans of cheap lager in their hands, and punctuated – no, actually glued together - by the f-word and c-word, one after the other after the other, spat out with casual venom for the players and manager, and total disregard for the other passengers, young and old, French and English.
Sitting next to one of these men was a small boy, around four years old, all togged up in the latest Chelsea and England football gear. As the abusive language continued, the boy yawned a series of tired yawns, hardly able to keep his red rimmed eyes open in the harsh fluorescent lighting, and finally slumped over to the side, reaching out with one arm, to cuddle up to his dad. His dad, who continued his vile and incoherent ramblings.
The boy announced he wanted to go the toilet, almost certainly the result of spending all evening consoled by supersize cups of Diet Coke, while his father and his mate had downed the pints. They laughed and teased him, and said he’d “have to tie a knot in it, if it’s big enough”.
A few minutes later, the father’s mate taunted him with a song, asking “Who thinks Chelsea fans are c _ _ _ s?”. Rising from his half-sleep in his father’s lap, the four year old opened one eye , lifted his hand, and gave the middle-finger salute across the carriage.
Finally, we reached the end of the line, the carriage still full. The two men stood up, the father holding his son over his shoulder, the way that all dads do, the little boy putting his arms around his dad’s neck, the way all small children do. As the train slowed down and and came to a halt, the men wobbled and lurched from side to side, other passengers steadying the father with his precious cargo to prevent any further damage that evening.
They disappeared down the platform, the boy’s red England hat drawing less attention in the crowd than the accompanying cries by his side of “Eng-ger-land, Eng-ger-land, Eng-ger-land”.
This morning when my alarm went off and the daily routine began, waking up my own children for school, watching them eating their breakfast, their sugar-free playtime snacks carefully packed in their bags, polished shoes ready by the front door, and the usual banter about teachers, science lessons, and various friends, I wondered where that little boy was waking up, and thought about what would happen to him today, tomorrow and during the rest of his so-called childhood, and I said a quiet and intense prayer.
Call me a snob, call me naïve, call me blinkered or a do-gooder, but today I realised why this week’s events are critical, and have made my first donation to Children in Need.
(Sorry for the long post)
