What NEW music are people listening to? And more importantly, where/how are you finding things you like?



This question was prompted by Mr Ripley's mention of Belle & Sebastian, who are certainly not new, but who I only recently discovered for myself.



I'll kick things off by saying at the moment I'm listening to Howie Day, and Matt Costa (Songs we Sing 2006 is excellent) - both been going for a few years, but really well produced, a bit like Jason Mraz meets Jack Johnson and John Mayer.



Would love to hear other bloggers' new favourites.

Mr B Good, I am currently head over heels in love with the "new" Fyfe Dangerfield album. Nic bought it for me for my birthday back in August and it waso nly last Saturday that I prized it out of the CD player in the Mighty Micra as I fancied a bit of Rat Pack Swing for a change.



I saw Fyfe with The Guillimots a few years back and thought he had "something" and his new album is just marvellous!

#41 "New" music I've bought in the last couple of weeks:



The Coast - Courtyard Hounds

I and Love and You - The Avett Brothers



Title track of the latter is possibly my favourote song of the last year. "New" in quotes as it isn't all new to the minute - you have to leave some scope for presents :-).



Newly acquired older music - three of Percy's back catalogue including a CD replacement for my old vinyl copy of the Honeydrippers Volume 1.

On another musical note (haha - see what I did there!?), last night at writing class we were set the task of writing an autobiographical piece of prose, based around ten songs/pieces of music that transport us back to a certain period in our lives. The tutor said she didn't want lists of "My Top Ten", more a case of Tracks Of My Years, summing us up via the music that has shaped us.



I can't wait to get stuck in as music has always been very important to me.

In answer to your question: I'm always a bit late to new music nowadays.



I used to get all my recommendations from John Peel (one of his best- and if you like B&S, you'll love these guys-was 'Hefner', I recommend starting with 'Breaking God's Heart'), or Radcliffe and Lard, Stuart Maconie, Steve lemaq (sp?) and Jo Whiley.

Nowadays - it's from Radciffe and Maconie or the odd bit of 6music that I get to listen to.



Any recommendations gratefully received...

Aw thanks you lovely ladies. Work and home have been a bit mental of late. My boss is working on a specification for a garage to be converted into a vets which has involved a lot of copying and pasting - perhaps I could be Queen Copier and Paster? Home has involved a lot of dashing here there and everywhere getting the boys to their various extra curriculars! There was a time when the boys didn't have anything on after school but at the mo there is something on every evening plus footie on a Saturday and Sunday.



Go on Deevs - get those spreadsheets sorted or you may not get out to play on Friday ;) x

JbG - meant to say that I am in a rediscovering mode at the moment so am digging out old music that I haven't listened to in yonks - the Ella & Louis collaborations, Alan Parsons Project and Etta James are the most recent. Like Rips, the introduction to new material tends to come from Radcliffe and Maconie although I also listen to the "specialist" shows at 7pm each evening and have often discovered new pleasures that way.



Him indoors teaches music and performance at a local college and often comes home with artists or tracks that the students have recommended.

Alex - on old music, last Friday night after a few glasses of the red grown up grape juice, Nic and I turned off the tellybox and rediscovered some of our old vinyl collections. It really was lovely - he played me tracks that meant something to him, and likewise I subjected him to some of my finer yoof moments and a bit of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac.



Music was my first love .....

Nice to hear your choices. I've started asking people I know what music they're listening to - amazing what you learn, about new music and about the people based on the answers they give. (It also beats talking about house prices / schools / strictly factor out of here!

#81 We do that too! And with the Man being a musician, over the years we have been together I have been introduced to so much music that would have otherwise passed me by. So far, the only music I have said I don't like is Allan Holdsworth. Just don't get it. If you haven't come across him, Allan is a jazz guitarist, originally from Yorkshire but has lived in the US for many years. Mr P goes to see him whenever he is in this country. Sounds like cats yowling to me. On the other hand, I have developed a passion for Scott Henderson / Tribal Tech. If you like guitar led blues with a modern twist, Scott's "Tore Down House" album is a must. Includes a great track featuring Thelma Houston called "You Hate Me" - an anti-love song with just superb lyrics.



How's the spreadsheet coming along Deevs? At the same speed as my project plan??!!

I absolutely love music - it really is the soundtrack to my life. I've always got a tune running through my head. I love most types - can't really get into rap or opera, but apart from that I'll listen to more or less anything, providing it's good quality. I love the idea of asking people what music they listen to as an ice-breaker, John. I'll have to try that next time I'm with a group of people I haven't met before.

#85 I'm the same, Deebee. My Mum's family were very musical and all played an instrument. My Mum always had the radio on and sang along so I grew up in an environment where music was very important. My Mum is just great - she is open to listening to different music and has recently discovered Led Zep (and I have to ask her to turn the volume down!).

Have just popped back. Just read CLP's post- I haven't been this excited since forever!! Wonder if Simon will do the same?



It is lovely to see the blog buzzing (not sure about the jumping), talking about the music. I am guilty of being stuck in the past as far as my preferred music goes (late 70's/80's), although listening to Drivetime has made me start to listen to more recent artists, so thanks Simon.



So is it mankini's, swimsuits and flip flops on Friday for our Tropical telephone marathon, Deevs?

We always had music in our house. My grandmother played the piano, her brother was the church organist and played at my wedding, and my Dad was in a reasonably successful Skiffle group. Hence, the occasional Lonnie Donegan suggestion from me on this blog! I have lovely memories of my Dad singing to me and my sister. He also sang to my children.

I come from a musical family too. We always had music at home, and at one point both my parents, my brother and I were all singing in the same choir. A sort of Kentish von Trap family! In fact my brother is a composer although he has yet to make any money at it. My parents' preference was for classical music, although I've noticed that since we lost my Dad, my Mum has been open to listening to a more eclectic mix. My son is very musical too - he has perfect pitch, which I am very jealous about!
