The Bulgarian was once as high as fourth in the world in 1996 but injury then struck her down when she was at the peak of her career.

She has won eight tour singles titles - her last coming at Budapest in 2001.

The Maleeva family has a great tennis tradition.

They created history when in 1993, Maleeva along with sisters Katerina and Manuela were all seeded at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.
