| ![]() 7 Jelena Dokic
Dokic burst onto the tennis scene with a stunning first round defeat of world number one and top seed Martina Hingis at Wimbledon in 1999. She then proved that was no fluke by reaching the quarter-finals. The Yugoslav went one better the following year but was beaten in the semi-finals by Lindsay Davenport. Grass suits her heavy-hitting game and she will be hoping that Wimbledon will provide a belated springboard for her season, which has been dogged by illness and injury. However, she has had some success, winning the singles and doubles titles at Sarasota in April while only a thigh problem stopped her competing in the final of the Paris Indoors. And Dokic put up a spirited fight before going down to defending champion Jennifer Capriati in the last eight at the French Open. She used to compete under the flag of Australia, but decided to represent the country of her birth, Yugolsavia, after falling out with the tennis establishment Down Under. |
