Profile: Dan Rymer
Dan's film Being Sam follows the story of a transgender woman as she adapts to a new life.
Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?
As I've grown older, I find my inspiration in people
I believe that Sam's story deserves to be heard and seen by as many people possible. BBC Fresh gave me the opportunity to showcase this film to a very wide audience.
What motivated you to make this film?
The motivation first and foremost was the story that was first presented to me and its unique circumstances. After my initial meeting with Sam, myself and the crew warmed to her and took on the responsibility to tell her story.
What camera did you use to shoot the film?
Canon 5D Mark II & Sony EX3
Who/what inspires you?
As a child, my inspirations were filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg but as I've grown older and honed in on my passion for filmmaking, I find my inspiration in people. Specifically people with extraordinary stories, who wouldn't otherwise have a chance to share them. As a documentary filmmaker, this is what drives me, meeting with new and interesting individuals and showcasing their stories when and where I can.
What are your plans for the future?
I want to progress as a filmmaker independently, starting my own production company with trusted colleagues who can bring something unique to the table. I don't like to plan too far ahead but prefer to take things as they come. I want to continue to search for my next interesting subject and perfect my storytelling skills in the documentary genre.
What is the most important thing you've learnt so far?
That being honest with yourself, colleagues, subjects and your own ability keeps your feet firmly on the ground and allows you to see the bigger picture more clearly.
