Profile: Ioan Holland

Ioan's film tackles big themes about life through the experience of one person.

Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?

I think that humans understanding each other is one of the key challenges we face in creating a better world. I think it’s important that we work to understand one another so that we can communicate and act more considerately and compassionately, and build a world where talk and not fight.

I am inspired by people who are true to themselves, and try to change the world for the better

What motivated you to make this film?

Other people’s stories – hearing their motivations, their musings, and their dreams. I love to find out what makes people tick, and I think there is great power in learning this about other people. As soon as we can understand and relate to others, to see what we have in common, and to understand another’s plight then we can create a world that works together in common good.

What equipment did you use to shoot the film?

I used a Nikon D3100 DSLR to shoot the video, and a Tascam DR-40 to record the sound.

Tell us about post-production.

I edited the film myself, and used Final Cut Pro X to edit. I did the grading and sound mixing myself entirely in Final Cut.

Who/what inspires you?

I am inspired by people who are true to themselves, and try to change the world for the better. Steve Jobs is a huge inspiration for me – someone who had brilliant design and practice principles who forged his own way and made great changes in the world. I am constantly inspired by the unknown, from the clouds and stars above our heads to the thoughts and minds of others. It all inspires me to discover more in the world and push myself further.

What are your plans for the future?

A big focus for me right now is a platform I am developing for writing – it is a place for creative writers to blaze their own trail and show their writing not as the written word but as sound. It’s very exciting and it’s called WriteHear. I have plans to continue with Understanding Humans, and interview more people to really help people to understand each other. I’m also working on a scripted animated short, called Cumulus, which I hope to expand further in future.

What is the most important thing you have learned so far?

To be true to yourself and do what makes your heart happy. This can come in the form of how you speak to people, how you dress, who you work with, and what films you make. Be true to yourself and don’t compromise yourself for too long, and you can live a life that makes you happy.
