Profile: Francis Carroll
Francis' film is a profile of musician Marcus Bonfanti.
Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?
I wanted to make a cool and relevant film that could introduce a new audience to blues music
I wanted to make a film around the British blues music scene and the up-and-coming musicians and personalities within it. I met Marcus Bonfanti during my research and his story became the soul focus of the film. He encapsulated the many themes I wanted to convey throughout the film with his passion for blues and his drive and ambition. I hope the Fresh audience enjoy Bonfanti and can be inspired by it.
What motivated you to make this film?
I related to Marcus' story a lot. I bought my first guitar during my teens and, like Marcus, grew up listening to blues. I wanted to make a cool and relevant film that could introduce a new audience to blues music.
What equipment did you use to shoot the film?
I shot the film myself with a digital SLR camera. I wanted to create an honest and raw feel, similar to the music featured. As I shot on the tube and throughout Camden, it was all handheld and single takes!
Tell us about post-production.
I edited the film myself using Final Cut Pro. I had assistance from my producer Kathy Plaskitt who gave me invaluable feedback when piecing together the final edit. I decided on black and white because it ties in with the roots of blues, I also feel it allows the audience to focus on the message as opposed to the vibrancy of a place like Camden.
Who/what inspires you?
I'm inspired by the creativity of others and like-minded people.
What are your plans for the future?
To continue film making and to enjoy my work.
What is the most important thing you have learned so far?
It's something I learnt whilst making Bonfanti and it's the overall message of the film: persistence is key.
