Sarah's submission is about her friend Euan, who has autism.

Why did you pick this subject for Fresh?

I picked this subject for Fresh because I believe autism is a topic that isn’t well known or recognised by young people and think that it should be available for people to learn from, so they can develop an understanding for it.

I always knew that I wanted to make a documentary about autism, and especially about Euan

What motivated you to make this film?

The fact that I have known Euan all of my life has always made me have a very keen interest in the disability. For as long as I’ve wanted to be a filmmaker, I always knew that I wanted to make a documentary about autism, and especially about Euan because he is a very unique, wonderful individual as well as my friend for life.

What equipment did you use to shoot the film?

JVC Everio camcorder and Olympus DM-670 dictaphone.

Tell us about post-production.

I self-edited the film and the using Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition for the sound editing. I didn’t grade the film as I thought it wasn’t necessary to do this whist editing, I wanted it to look like a home movie in its original raw footage and I feel that that has been achieved and works effectively.

Who/what inspires you?

The Dark Knight (2008) by Christopher Nolan was a film that inspired me to make films. The production of The Dark Knight and it’s post-production really fascinated me as it was so successful in the box office. From this, it really made me feel like that I can be a part of filmmaking.

What are your plans for the future?

I have one more year at university before I graduate. Once I complete my degree, I plan to work as a freelance videographer and editor for a short period of time to build up my portfolio, then I plan to apply for work in film and television productions.

What is the most important thing you have learned so far?

The most important thing that I have learnt in my time making films is to not just understand how films are made but to understand the people that are in your films.
