Sylvia Harrison, Miss Nottingham 2005 contestant
Sylvia is not new to Miss Nottingham

Sylvia Harrison, Miss Nottingham 2005 finalist

Interview with Katie Hall
Sylvia Harrison, 20, a trainee assistant manager for a catering company, is from Carlton, Nottinghamshire.

About Katie Hall

I'm a mild punk-rocker who has been enjoying the delights of Nottingham over the past three years in the ways that students generally do. My first love was Zappa the cat, named after his highness Frank. My second is my dad's vinyl collection.

Twenty year old Mapperley local Sylvia is in danger of catching the beauty contest bug.

Sylvia is no stranger to the competition, or performing in general: "I took part in the competition when I was 17, and it was completely different then, but fantastic. I got into the top 20 and got really into the event with sponsorship and everything. Then four years later I got a letter saying I was through to the auditions for this year's competition and got through to the final 12!"

She has also treaded the boards of the theatre, the best moment of her life so far being performing her first lead role, as Guinevere in Camelot. Since then she has also acted in Grease and Tess of the D'Ubervilles, and worked behind the scenes.

Her favourite aspect of Nottingham is the nightlife. "It's fantastic, there's always somewhere to go and the people are great. I love the Coco Lounge and the Pitcher and Piano, all those places in Hockley… and clubbing wise I tend to end up in The Works. My perfect day would be to have something nice to eat, a few drinks, go shopping, then go home and to the local in Mapperley. There are plenty of social places and people here."

For Sylvia becoming Miss Nottingham would mean she could give something back to the city she loves so much: "Representing Nottingham would mean a hell of a lot as I've lived here all my life. I'd get really involved in the local area, and I'd love to help charities… putting a face to charity events can really help."

Typical beauty contest questions…

Ten years from now… I'll be happy, definitely, in a job that I enjoy doing. I'd like to keep up the modelling, but nothing is set in stone, I'll take advantage of any opportunities that come my way.

If I could change one thing about the world… I know it sounds clichéd but I really am sick to death of third world poverty and all the wars going on around the world. Governments get involved and they possibly have good intentions but just make things worse. I know the world is full of lots of different cultures and traditions that find it hard to work together, but I just want to live in a civil world, where everyone can get along!
