I was taught to type when I was in the 6th form at school. We had to type to a record - can't remember what it was - keeping the rhythm. We also had 'hoods' put over the keyboard so that we couldn't see the keys and had to 'touch type'. I never did type well but it gave me a headstart when computers arrived and keyboard skills came to the fore again.

#62 Amelia, I have never seen Bellowhead before and since Simon calls them 'mighty', I'm thinking it will be a good night, especially with 11 band members on a smallish stage at a venue that was once a church hall until 1976 when it was turned into a music venue and opened by the Queen... maybe how it got its Queen's Hall name! (?).



Three weeks ago I turned down the offer of a friend's spare free TV show ticket when her husband didn't want to go, to Stirling Castle tonight see the TV recording of Rod Stewart's Christmas show.... with Michael Buble, Kylie Minogue and Nicola Benedetti, but I was already looking forward to Bellowhead and had tickets since June.



The TV show means being at Stirling Castle at 6'ish and a dress code of cocktail dress, dinner jacket, kilts etc and I'd rather wear my jeans to see Bellowhead! I've seen Rod Stewart at Edinburgh castle two years ago and I'm not keen on 'sickly smooth' Mr Buble but had it been a different night, I would have gone, even though it meant dressing up!

Think you have def made the right choice Flo. You would be mad to swap Bellowhrad for any of them. Rod doesn't really do it for me, saw him ages ago at a works organised thing in a hideously huge arena, horrid.



Car didn't cost as much as I feared!!!

I was never taught to type at school, as I went to a grammar school where it was expected pupils would all go on to either University or the Civil Service rather than become a 'lowly' secretary (my headmistress's sentiments, not mine!) And as Simon said, there was really no other reason to learn to type in those days... Later I got a job which involved a small amount of typing, and I basically taught myself from a book.



#51 If the weather's anything like it is today Flo, their best bet would be to go to the cinema. Or they could have a look round the Fitzwilliam Museum... No, I'm not going to see them. In fact I haven't got any gigs, shows or the like booked at the moment... must do something about that.

I'm going to what should be a good show on Saturday at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh with my favourite Phantom and Jean Valjean, John Owen-Jones, Ruthie Henshall, who was Simon's guest a few weeks ago, Keith Jack from Joseph, a 65-piece orchestra and a choir of 140 youngsters and it's being filmed for a DVD so it should make a nice pressie for my musicals loving friends!

OK, I'd like to propose that the world waits another year (at least) before ending. I've got some new CDs that I haven't listened to yet (although the trip into London this evening will take care of Celebration Day!) and I'm intending to treat myself to the super-value boxed set of the first 10 Joni Mitchell albums, and I've already got two gigs booked for March with, hopefully, another in March if I manage to get a Neil Young ticket.

Hehe... I'm only out on two nights this week, Sal, then next Friday the Saw Doctors, three nights in December for June Tabor and Oysterband, Runrig and Them Beatles (a brilliant Beatles' tribute band frrom Glasgow), then nothing much until Paul Carrack in February and Gretchen Peters and Alfie Boe in March! Edinburgh has such a lot of shows and is too near to not go to ones we enjoy... sometimes with my husband and others with friends and is a good night out!

Two nights out for me this week, but really wish I could do three as I would really like to see Tift Merritt tomorrow night. But I'm tired, and broke til payday.

Haha, luckily for me, especially with no payday in sight, I do like my nights in, and looking out there just now, I'd take a lot of persuading to go out.

I'd love to go to more live events, but they are just so darn expensive. I was looking at the Roger Waters 'The Wall' show as a possible Christmas present for Mr B, as he is a big Floyd fan, but tickets are upwards of £70. Plus the cost of the train fare to get there - for a night out for two you're looking at about £200. Ouch!! And even in Cambridge most of the more popular acts start at about £30 per ticket...

I agree with you, Deebee - even down here, near sunny (not) Southend, for the two of us to go out for an evening at the local theatre/concert hall, it costs around £150 when it is all added up - not cheap.

#80 Deebee, re the weather north/south divide, I took these two pics at about 4pm, to show you how nice it has been today, with not a cloud in the sky. The sun was going down behind the horizon at the front of my house and a quick look to the left to see the moon.

£15 for Emily Barker tonight at the Union Chapel, and I recall Deep Dark Woods at the Borderline in the summer was even cheaper. Kathleen Edwards at Bush Hall next month is £20



Plenty of value, and great music, out there to be had at smaller venues, certainly in London. I think John Hiatt at £45ish is the most expensive ticket I've bought this year out of 16 gigs I will have been to.



Obviously if you're a fair way out from the venue the travel gets more expensive.

Sorry Flo, I was a bit further away than expected with my lovely newbees but I can agree that the weather was rather nice today here too! The Rod et al concert at the castle here was kept top secret until after the event and I think is to be broadcast on TV in December.



Laughed when I heard Irregular Blogger Andrew's Ring My Bell and Mr W was impressed when I told him before Simon said it who would get a menshe for the tune!



Had such a busy night, my mind has gone a bit blank for other menshes - sorry.
