Away day

Simon Mayo|08:44 UK time, Monday, 12 November 2012

Hi bloggers from wild and windy Cornwall. Final 2 schools to be visited today in Tregony and Bude which means I'm away from my desk today. Young Liza Tarbuck in charge with Mick Hucknall as her guest.

Should be on last train into London and back on the show on Tuesday.

The school bell is going, another assembly awaits...

Good Morning Simon and Fellow Bloggers

Have a great time Simon and thank you for a new blog today. I thought I had died and gone to heaven last night. Christie Moore was outstanding but Declan Sinnott.words fail me. He played that guitar like nectar dripping in your mouth. Fabulous!

  • Comment number 2.

What a star, to be blogging for us today Simon.

Liza (young lady!).... if you happen to be looking in..

How about 'Last train to London' - ELO to open the show and here's hoping Simon is on it!!

    Happy Days :)

  • Comment number 3.

Ooh, we did get a missive from our Lord Ammo - good morning Simon, hope the day goes well for you and that you get home safely this evening.

Good morning again to everyone else who is about this morning.

    Good Morning All

How lovely - a new blog! I wasn't expecting that. Thank you Simon for thinking of us, and I hope the school visits go well and you don't miss the last train to London...

I'll be back at coffee time for a catch up from yesterday.

    ~X~

    Wotcha Shona, Sal and Jennie,

Hope all is well with you.

How nice of Lord Ammo to blog today. Hope he wasn't late for assembly as a result.

A dull but mild day here. Just off for a meeting at the little local charity I chair. Looking forward to holding a Children in Need coffee morning there tomorrow. Which reminds me - I need to make some cakes.

    Have a good day.x

    Good morning Simon and Blogpoppets.

I hope Simon enjoys his Cornwall viti and I expect the school children will be pleased to see him and get an hour or so away from doing their school work!

Shona, I'm pleased that like me on Thursday night, you also enjoyed seeing Christy Moore and Declan Sinnott last night, as I said on the previous blog, when Amelia asked if I'd enjoyed the show, I always go to see him every time he's in Edinburgh and he has the ability to make it feel as though he's playing in your front room rather than a huge theatre... just brilliant!

  • Comment number 7.

Morning Julia - good luck for tomorrow and CiN coffee morning.

Glad to hear that your moggie is on the mend Billie.

    Good Morning again -

What a lovely surprise to see a new blog!

Thankyou Simon. I hope your day away goes well for you.

I hope everyone has good days.

#6 Flo, thanks for letting me know he was coming to Stirling all those months ago (February, I think). I had such a wonderful evening ;0)

  • Comment number 10.

#6 oops, 'viti'... what's that? It should be 'visit'...

  • Comment number 11.

Morning lovely Deebee and Florence too. Must confess I still haven't looked up Christy Moore and Declan Sinnott. From all the positive comments I have seen about them on here I clearly must do though.

Jennie, Thank you for the good wishes. Just remembered I also have a dental appointment and high noon too. Was supposed to go last week but my dentist was poorly so I had a lucky escape. Definitely need two fillings repaired. I am shaking as I type.

  • Comment number 12.

#9 Shona, had I refreshed before posting my last message I would have replied to you to say I'm so pleased you enjoyed your evening.

Someone else I always go to see every year and tickets go quickly for, is Paul Carrack but I don't know if you're a fan of his or not or if he's playing your way.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Bellowhead next week at the Queen's Hall so that should be a rousing evening, then the Saw Doctors at the end of the month will be another lively night... and I'm also really looking forward to June Tabor and Oysterband early in December, a quieter show with tables/cabaret style seating.

Julia, I'm sure you'll be fine at the dentist having fillings repaired and you possibly won't need that awful long needle either!

Julia, just listen to that Irish voice and his and Declan's guitars.... mesmerising!

#12 Oh Flo, took a little time out from work and stuck the headphones on to listen to that. Ride On was the song that inspired me to pick up my guitar again after an absence of 15 years (apart from playing school shows etc).

  • Comment number 14.

    Morning all !

Many thanks Simon for sending forth a new blog on which to play. Tis somewhat wet here in the Wigan district, and a very cold rain at that (me no likey cold rain).

A warm blog welcome to 'tickled lurker' from yesterday who was clearly very blessed with their travels on Saturday :-) Such a shame the 3rd time lucky didnt happen.

Panto rehersals on tonight (oh no its not!) So busy evening ahead and might not get to hear much of dearest Lisa.

    Play nice everyone

    ~gill~

  • Comment number 15.

Coffee time - haven't seen CoffeeBuzz around here for a while, so I've had to make my own...

A bit of catching up from before:

Billie - so pleased to hear your mogpoppet is on the mend! It is so worrying when pets are ill, especially when they can't tell us how they're feeling.

Tortie - glad you enjoyed Skyfall. And I agree with you that Javier Bardem is very good, in a creepy sort of way.

Tickled Lurker - first, why? It's better to join in than to lurk - much more fun. And we are a friendly bunch. Hard luck in not getting your third chance to speak to our leader. I can vouch from personal experience that he is well used to people talking gibberish at him... ;o) Although actually I hold the view that if you see someone well known "off duty" it is better to just leave them alone. Maybe smile in acknowledgement that you recognise them, but leave it at that.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 16.

Just read back the end of last blog. Flo, yes the same guy was kept busy coming back and forth with Christy's guitars in Stirling too. Christy Moore was funny when he handed the guy his guitar and said "fill her up".

I'm surprised you saw him in the bar afterwards as the bars were all closed in our venue and we were told that this was at Christy Moore's request.

  • Comment number 17.

Oooo new blog. You are good to us Simon.

A 'red sky' morning had lived up to it's 'warning' and it's now very grey and wet outside :(

I hope everyone had a good weekend - it certainly sounds as though Christy Moore was a hit - I shall have to investigate.

Julia - you have my full sympathy, I always quake at the thought of the dentist too (although mine is a lovely and very sympathetic gent)

  • Comment number 18.

#16 Soona, When I saw Christy in the bar (booze and coffee) was at the Queen's Hall last year, (it's just outside the main hall door) and where the acts often go afterwards to sign CDs that have been on sale before and during the show.

I often come home from gigs with set lists I've 'scrounged' or been handed and when I asked Christy if I could please have a set-list, he said he doesn't play to a set list and plays to his mood and the mood of the audience (he's happy for people to call out at times until he says the jukebox is shut) and he said he likes every show to be different.

Here's a random set-list I've just scanned from the Beach Boys a few years back (Mike Love, Bruce Johnston etc not the 'puppet' Brian Wilson), when they listed 54 songs, but as it was the last night of a UK tour, they stayed on stage until 11.15 but were due to end at 10.40 so we also got several more songs... Bruce Johnston also gave me a nice towel... I've no idea why but I still have it... white with blue stripes at the ends!

Shona, I need an edit button and really should check before pressing 'send'... as you have lost an 'h' in your name in my last message... watching TV at the same time as typing and I'm on the laptop which I'm not keen on using!!!

  • Comment number 20.

Shona, I mean to say, I wonder if Christy Moore has had a bad experience with some drunks in Stirling!!!

The bar in the Festival Theatre was open before, during and after Christy's show and was packed out when we arrived and I've never seen the bar in the Queen's Hall closed and some people drink coffee or tea as all is available.

  • Comment number 21.

Lovely, luscious Liza, thou, fairest of the maidens, I crave a boon!

How often does one hear a song to which everyone can relate?

"No' very often!" I hear you think. (Cannae dae a Scouse accent).

This is such a song. I commend it to the House!

Ode De Toilet (The Toilet Song) - Brad Paisley

Dedicated to Liza, for whom I would, (with a gentle hand and a loving touch), put that toilet seat down!

    Keep it Country!

P.S. Nick Barraclough played it on his Country show several times, and it didn't get him into trouble!

    ;o)

  • Comment number 22.

Afternoon all - I must admit I keep missing Lisa's show on a Saturday evening as I'm normally following the mighty Preston North End on BBC Radio Lancashire. However, as I was coming back from my first taste of 'Green Lane-ing' we were listening to her lovely show whilst coming back over t'Moors and bashing bits of Landy back into shape -what a day!

    Bye for now!

PS Just realised this week is Children In Need week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For some reason a thought it was next week not this week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My goodneeeeeess that crept up on me fast!!!!!!!!

  • Comment number 25.

Bingo, I was reminded it's CiN week this morning by your friend Mr Evans when he was talking about his Ferraris being up for being driven next year and he said he was having a meeting today with Bernie Ecclestone... so I wonder what he's going to be up to!!!

  • Comment number 26.

Many thanks for the welcomes Gill and Deebee. Why do I lurk and not post? Two main reasons, I think. Firstly, I know very little about music and don't have time to research any choonchasing, so feel it's better left to others. Enjoy hearing the songs which are picked, mind, when I am on my way home. And the other reason is that I'm in enough trouble for not getting on with my work as it is! I tried contributing during the Olympics and found myself getting into complicated conversations!

Deebee, if I'm honest, I agree about "celebs" and their off duty time. But I still wish I'd had the courage to say "hello I love the show and the blog" before scuttling away.

"Scuttling down the pavement" anyone else here remember Glompus Van Der Hloed's Tales from the Crypt from the 80's? Throw another tourist on the fire, Creephole.

There you go, that's another reason I don't post. I only know weird stuff!

  • Comment number 27.

So here we all are - I actually FORGOT Simon was on a away day to Cornwall..it's been a weird weekend*...but thanks DT Dude for checking in!

*#2 daughter's birthday (went to local fireworks event) then food and cake at ours (at which #1 daughter started to have labour pains, despite only being 34 weeks) she's now in hospital and at last count was 4cms dilated (the girls know what I'm talking about) so all could be over by tonight.

Not too worried, grandson #1 was 32 weeks - but we put that early labour down to her taking and finally passing her driving test (5th time!!)

Hopefully all will be done and dusted by Friday as I'm in London for CiN!!

Enjoy yourselves, it truly is later than I think, so long as Liza with a Zee gives her famous naughty laugh, the Old Man will be happy.

    See you all tomorrow..

#22 - Lady_S - I'm surprised that Yorkist separatists haven't jammed Radio Lancashire from reaching beyond the border. I've never quite understood this thing between Lancashire and Yorkshire.

  • Comment number 30.

    Afternoon all

Three days off, so three TV shows already consumed and a run done as well. Avett Brothers ticket for March also bought. And tweet sent to Ticketmaster expressing my disgust at their thievery in chanring us the same price to print our own tickets as they do to post them. That's crookedness of the highest order in my book.

  • Comment number 31.

OOh Suzieeeeeeeeee - hope everything is going well with your daughter - good luck!!

Hello Tickled Lurker - don't worry about not knowing too much about music; I know what I like when I hear it, but as to who sang what and when :0/

And it can spark off an interesting blog when someone comes up with a random piece of knowledge/information you never know what may happen!

I found this quote in my diary the other day -

"Good music is that which penetrates the ear with facility and quits the memory with difficulty." Thomas Beecham 1879 - 1961 English Conductor

    JW

  • Comment number 32.

#31 - I concur re Tickled Lurker. Who is to say what is good / bad music - it's all a matter of personal taste (or lack of). As far as random nonsense contributions to the blog, there are plenty of those and they do often liven up an otherwise flat day.

  • Comment number 33.

    # 30 chanring = charging. Typing while miffed is rarely a good thing :-)

  • Comment number 34.

    Florence - A wish a was a close friend of CLP's!!!!!

Not a cling-on just 'cos 'e is who 'e is.... But the fact that we 'ave alot in common:-

From the North West... From single parent family of working class bachground, like golf, like cars and motorsport in particular like Ferrari's (if a was wealthy enough a wouldn't go MAD and buy a £12 million Ferrari... BUT a would buy a Ferrari for sure!!!!!!)

(not ter show off in... As am a petrol 'ead ter enjoy driving, polish and admire it!!!!!)

(of which a got close with me 30k Lotus Esprit a bought!!!!! They call this the poor mans Ferrari!!!!!!)

(A remember when a owned me Lotus a would keep it immaculate in the garage!!!!!)

(Then sometimes take it for a spin.... Going nowhere... I'd just go for a drive just simply ter enjoy driving it!!!!!)

(soz am going off on one about cars!!!!!)

    (time ter end the brackets)

So yes it would be nice ter be a pal of CLP.... But a think 'e is too busy in the showbizz world AND of course being a family man now also - know what am sayin'!!!!!!!!

As for CiN - Great what the beeb does each year for children in need of need!!!!!!!!

'ope the beeb NEVER gets privatised.... If it did CiN a think would struggle be.... Same with Sport Relief and Comic Relief!!!!!!

  • Comment number 35.

Brief pop by - day is running away from me - hello all from a dreich Ireland.

Lovely to have a wee postcard from our leader from Cornwall.

Suzy - sending lots of good wishes to you and your daughter.

Shona & Florence - thanks for your gig reports - always lovely to read and so pleased you both had good times.

Tickled Lurker - I would have done exactly the same as you on having spotted someone famous I liked. Much easier to say hello at an organised thing like a book signed than when you just see them in the street.

And as for having to know much about music to tune choose I agree with what has been said above, just go with what you like I think is the best way. There is always tonnes of stuff chosen that I've never heard of and I love then going away to listen.

Although you are right it can occupy too much of my thinking of a morning.

And I think the random nonsense is one of the many wonderful things about the blog. So do stay and chat and add to the collective wittering that goes on.

  • Comment number 36.

How did it get to this time in the day? Goodness, I've been busy.

Flo, yes he took requests from the audience last night and dealt very well with one or two "eager" people too. Someone in the audience said that he was a recovering alcoholic and refused to allow alcohol in the hall where he was playing. Who knows? It was a great show all the same.

    #30 What a cheek Ken!

A trip to the vet for Jimmy's check up at 5pm. Fingers crossed we are doing everything correctly.

Thanks for the good wishes - she's back off the delivery suite and on a ward with other waiting mums...still having contractions, a show and is 3-4cms gone but not good enough to be in delivery ward....so long as it's over by CiN daaaay!!

ps I've said 'hello' to famous people cos I thought I knew them!!

Most recently it was Mary Beard (the long-haired historian that did the Pompeii programmes) in a shop in Oxford - she looked just like a science lecturer and so I said Hi! thinking I knew her. (well I did, from the TV)

    See you all tomorrow,

    Mwah

  • Comment number 38.

Shona, in post #16 you said he requested that the bars all be closed at your venue, but I don't see how he could stop bars from opening unless he's going to compensate them for loss of sales... but that's a bit different than not allowing people to drink while they watch the show. I didn't see anyone with drinks inside the Festival Theatre, but the bar itself was busy when we arrived. Perhaps if as you say he wasn't wanting people to drink, it could be the reason he plays without an interval, when some people head to the bar for a quickie... personally I prefer an ice cream half way through a show. ;o)

  • Comment number 39.

#26 I'm sure there will be a next time, Tickled Lurker! And I agree with what others have said re musical knowledge or lack of. My only credentials are that I love music and have been listening to it all my life. I don't consider myself to be at all knowledgeable about it. And I have discovered so many new acts through being part of this blog.

#27 and #37 Tell her to get a move on, Suzieeee - granny has an important job to do on Friday!

#36 Good luck to wee Jimmy for his trip to the V. E. T.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 40.

Hello Tickled Lurker :) Welcome. An unnaturally quiet day today in Simon's absence, so hopefully you'll tootle back over tomorrow.

Suzieeee - that's exciting, here's hoping for a few more cms asap!

Heading off home shortly (not skipping a la Shona) but I will run when I get back if the rain holds off (*does a rain dance*)

  • Comment number 41.

#22, Lady S. It is very true what they say about this blog being able to educate and inform. I myself have learned something new from your post. The mighty Preston North End, you say. Well, knock me down with a feather. Until today, I was totally unaware that there were two PNE's.

  • Comment number 42.

Just about the turn the computer off but have to say #41 Paul - haha!

Hope all goes well at the vets Shona.

    Off to see Argo tonight.

    3 more sleeps!

  • Comment number 43.

Tickled Lurker you would fit well in our house, I recall well the occasion when hubbs introduced me to Tales from the Crypt :-)

From past experience its excelant for cheering up a cold misrible caravan holiday.

I have a very full living room presently as the minded children are here along with cherub. Will be escaping soon to my rehersal.

    ~gill~

  • Comment number 44.

I had to smile at Liza when she started the show by saying she was sitting in for Simon who was round at her house fixing her shed roof! :o))

  • Comment number 45.

Thank you all for the further welcomes and reassurances about musical knowledge. Perhaps I'll have a go at tomorrow's theme although I have to go to a funeral in the morning so won't be able to blog until later.

Suzieeeeeee I hope your daughter is doing well.

Shona - I assume that when you go to the V E T there's no skipping involved? I used to walk to the V E T with my childhood dog, and he would sense where we were going from at least 1/4 mile away from the surgery. Cue scraping of claws along the pavement followed by teenager staggering with carried spaniel the rest of the way. Once in the front door the whimpering started. No not me, although by that time it was tempting.

  • Comment number 46.

Long rambling Liza Tarbuck "interview" had me reaching for the earplugs.

#43. Gill - thank goodness someone knows what I'm on about! Ex has just recorded it onto CD from his very elderly tape, so I listened to it recently for the first time in years.

  • Comment number 48.

    Welcome Tickled Lurker.

Lady S:I used to live within hearing distance of Preston North End. Now it is Sheffield United

Enjoy Argo Amelia: it's a good film and they play the opening bars to When the Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin.

  • Comment number 49.

    Evening All!

A quiet blog today - not surprising really.

I haven't read back - thought I'd jump in just because Broadband is actually working! It's VERY frustrating when it keeps cutting out.

Pepper update - more progress - very much almost his own self. He hasn't been out today but that's cos we've not been here and I didn't want him to go out with Billy this evening cos it's raining again! Or rather raining still!

  • Comment number 50.

Billie, I'm so pleased there has been further progress with Pepper and maybe in a day or two he'll be back to normal... it's always such a worry when our beloved pets aren't well and can't tell us what is wrong. Hopefully Shona's little Willy has had a good report from the vet.

  • Comment number 51.

Good to hear that your moggie is well on the way to a full recovery, Billie.

I think it's little Jimmy, Florence, but then again, perhaps you know something we don't................ ;0)

    JW

  • Comment number 52.

#50 LOL Flo at Shona's little Willy! (And just for the record I am female ;0))

The bar was open when we got there Flo but they closed just before the show started as he didn't want folks drinking during the show.

Billie, I am so pleased to hear that Pepper is feeling better. Pets are such a worry sometimes but not my little Jimmy. The VET gave us a Gold Star. No glucose in his wee, weight as it should be, coat all sparkly, eyes bright and what a welcome he got when we entered.

  • Comment number 53.

#51 You sneaked in there before me Jennie!

Thank you for all the good wishes for Jimmy too and welcome Tickled Lurker! Hope you stick around for some fun.

  • Comment number 54.

    Have good evenings all.

See you tomorrow after the weigh-in. :0

    JW

  • Comment number 55.

Glad to hear the various blogpets are doing well!

I quite enjoyed the bits of the show that I heard this evening. Liza played some good music, anyhow...

I'm really enjoying Richard Hammond's "Miracles of Nature" series on BBC1 at the moment. Tonight's show featured amongst other things a blind man on a mountain bike and a rather cute seal that could locate a radio controlled submarine blindfolded using his whiskers to detect movement in the water. Blimey - amazing stuff! And talking of amazing stuff, one of my ex-colleagues is going to be on Panorama tomorrow night.

Hope your weigh-in goes well, Jennie. Night night all.

I should be asleep but am lying here thinking about eggs benedict. I have been for most of the day since his Lordship tweeted this morning. I remember the first time I tried it, truly the most magnificent, indulgent, breakfast dish. And of course the yokes have to be runny.

Argo was splendid, highly recommended. If like me you knew the wider story but not the specifics don't be tempted to google before you watch, terrifically tense at the end. More tomorrow maybe when not typing on phone.
