Not Wednesday.

Simon Mayo|09:03 UK time, Tuesday, 2 October 2012

It's the small things that get to you. You try to make sure you get the big parenting issues right (providing a house, food, clothes etc) and then you do something like forget it's games on Wednesday NOT TUESDAY. So consequently child 3 will spend all day being the only one ready for football/hockey/rugby which, as any fool knows, is tomorrow. I think we all know that it is days like this that children remember for a long time and are likely to quote back at you for many years to come. My folks got my first day of school wrong (everyone else had been there a day) and that was that. I never caught up. That was 1964. You see my point.

This morning it's 'On The Road' a film adaptation of the Jack Kerouac novel starring Sam Riley and Kristen Stewart (during which I shall ignore texts from all offspring as it is against the code of conduct and not because I don't want to go home, get the uniform, and take it to school). Then to R2 and today's show which features Robert Cray, described by Rolling Stone as 'one of the greatest guitarists of his generation'. He's performed with Eric Clapton, John Lee Hooker, Tina Turner et al and has just released a new Robert Cray Band album 'Nothing But Love' and he's touring here next year. I've never met him before but hear great things! Mr Cray at 6.

And oldies today please for THE STIFF UPPER LIP. Ian Hislop has a series tonight on BBC2 on whether we Brits still have the emotional restraint of former generations. It would seem that we don't - Saturday night TV never seems complete without floods of tears from some happy/sad contestant who has just been accepted/rejected by a talent/talentless judge. So the stiff upper lip it is, over to you.

Have a nimble and deft Tuesday (a non-games day you know), see you after 5.

That poor youngest child of yours, Simon... the other week he went to school wearing wet socks and today he thinks he's going to be playing rugby instead of lessons!

A lovely sunny morning and no wind for a change so a walk on the beach with my dogs is next on my list of things to do, today.

    Morning!!

A beautiful morning here, been out for a walk with the dogs, a bit windy but sunny, so have blown the cobwebs away. At one point, a whole flock of what looked like jays flew, squawking, up out of a tree - Sal, is this usual? I have never seen so many together before.

    CRYING - ROY ORBISON

It has probably been suggested many times, so please can I share?

Simon, your blog made me chuckle this morning - us parents just can't get it right can we? I would have thought that being prepared a day ahead would be a good thing, but am rapidly realising that being prepared is as uncool as being disorganised. Imagine how bad I feel when I think about the long term effect upon my youngest son after I took him back to school a day early this term. All his friends were enjoying their last day of the summer holiday whilst his cruel Mummy made him get up early, put on his uniform and go to stand on the front door step of an empty school.

    Righto, off to read back.

Ps. My wisdom of the day - it is virtually impossible not to walk in time with 'The Immigrant Song', even when accidentally slipping and sliding down a chalky bank.

In my head I keep mixing up “The Road” and “On The Road” – really not the same book / film at all!

Not Wednesday, and not Saturday no matter how much I wished it was lying in bed this morning.

Deebee – from over the page – the Light Entertainment thing on BBC4 doesn’t seem to be on iplayer but is repeated next Saturday after the lovely Inspector Montalbano at 22.40.

So what did you say Paul to upset the mods?

I was thinking about what Simon said in yesterday’s blog about not watching sport as it too stressful. I have a friend who feels the same. Even the updates from the Spurs Man U match were too much for them.

I think it is a little weird; it is the emotion and the anticipation and dread and often the disappointment (being Scottish) that makes watching sport so enjoyable for me (albeit I tend to listen not watch these days as Simon says it sucks up too much time). I was exhausted after watching Andy Murray win the US Open and couldn’t sit still while watching it but I couldn’t bear not to watch it.

  • Comment number 53.

Thanks Hoffs., Mrs B, amelia, Zoe and everyone else,

By the way, I thought of you all when this little moment happened yesterday:

Sitting in the hospital waiting area, the usual rows of those rather institutional padded high-back wipe-clean seats, lots and lots of ill/anxious/tired/scared people waiting to see a doctor or consultant or to be called into one of the side rooms, somebody behind the reception desk decides to switch on the background muzak

Ah yes, PE/games. I loved it, never more so than in the 6th form when it consumed the whole of Wednesday afternoon (after a 40 minute warm up in the lunchhour playing squash of course!). We were really lucky, our school had a brand new sports centre which was jointly owned with the town council in Wareham. Massive sports hall (room for basketball and then other activities at the end of the hall after the partitioning curtain was pulled across, indoor pool, 4 squash courts (one with glass back), upstair balcony with table tennis tables. The pitches were all new and terrible though. First few months we had to start each lesson walking across with buckets collecting the stones as they came to the surface.

But this is approaching the time of year when PE teachers think it's fun to have you running warmup laps of the rugby pitch and they insist you throw yourself to the ground face first on their command. Which always came when you on the wettest, muddiest part of the field of course. You can see how some people hated it and thought PE teachers were sadists :-).

Do all schools have 6th form games all afternoon on Wednesdays? It was handy preparation for university, although Wedneday afternoons there became "early getaway" day if going home or away for the weekend :-)

Tidying a very messy desk. Going well so far, but I feel a tea-break coming on....

I find that going to an organized group is the only way, Hoffs. I have been before and it works for me - whether it's the fear factor or not, I don't know. But the food itself, that you can eat is not much different to a 'normal' diet; basically low fat/sugar and plenty of fruit and veg - no calorie counting or points counting either - too fiddly for me!

Thank you for the reminder about getting the boiler serviced Jennie. I've missed doing this for 2 years now so it is a must for this year!

8 and a half pounds is a lot to lose Jennie and sounds like you may lose a few more running after your poorly Mr..... what a shame picking up a chest infection ;(

#86 - Jennie - thanks for that. I will have to investigate further - doing it by myself definitely isn't working so perhaps the group approach would be better.

#85 Hoffs... not a genius, I had already seen the article, so I was lucky being able to find it again and I thought it might help a fellow blogpoppet! :o)

#89 - Florence - well thank you anyway!

That's what I love about this blog - Simon may say that bloggers discuss pretty much anything, 24 hours a day, but it's often a good place to ask for some help, not always 'on topic' ie. music and Simon's daily blog offering. Someone will always help.

For instance, earlier this year, I had a huge issue with my youngest boy not wanting to go to school. I was in contact with a blogger (lives far north of me) firstly here and then elsewhere, who gave me some really good advice and calmed my nerves. Having listened to her and talked to the school accordingly Mini-Hoffs now is OK with me leaving in the morning before he lines up and has actually started writing in the classroom - sounds like nothing, but believe me, its a major result. Thank you blogger friend, I think you know who you are! x

So, any advice I can give, I will do so and contrary to what may appear from my posts today, I do know about subjects other than gin!!

Looking forward to the show - hoping to hear lots of blogger menshes. See you later x

That's what I love about this blog - it's just such a friendly place to be! X

Pants! I've just been asked to attend a Civic Reception at 4.30pm. ;(

What a joy - managed to get back here!

Aww ... lovely to see personal welcome messages - thank you SO much all of you - I have really missed being here in so many ways. My current contract is mainly on-screen and team-orientated so there is absolutely no chance of a surreptitious visit for a choonchoose or chinwag.

Weekends are chock-a-block with family commitments, several trips to London and - some of you may recall all my three girls have September birthdays.

Still my favourite time of the year mind.

Hurrah for October winds and festive expectations!

For now though - I'm at home. Cooking chilli con carne and tapping the trusty old desktopPC keyboard to chat to you. Feels like old times.

Sorry to hear news of your mother, John B. One can only hope and pray for a positive outcome. [Our own poorly mum narrative remains unresolved - however, we are encouraged by some recent test results and are planning her 80th birthday bash]

Hello Katy, it's good to have you back!! Our heads, ears and necks have been a bit cold landing on 100 or 50 with no wonderful prizes as well as missing your amusing banter ;)

I have now been awake and up for 12 hours today and needing matchsticks for heavy eyelids or some strong coffee (Where is Coffeebuzz when you need him?)

Hoping to get out of the Civic Reception PDQ so I can skippety, skip, skip, skip up that road as fast as I can to hear the show.

    Good luck with the choons!

    Hello all

So nice to see you Katy

Well done Jennie - that's a great start - don't disappear on us though :)

Ken - many traditional schools (often independent) & most boarding schools still do Wednesday afternoon games. It's much less common in the state sector and less traditional schools were matches tend to be held after school and increasingly at weekends.

Reflecting on the New Radicals, I rather wish I had the music in me still. Sounds horribly croaky at the moment.

.....and I missed the 100 by a mere 180 seconds......
