Keeping schtum

Simon Mayo|09:34 UK time, Wednesday, 3 October 2012

School run done (main conversation-simultaneous equations) and in my normal promiscuous listening habits, came upon a 5 Live/Nicky Campbell chat about Nicky's 25 years on national radio. Newsman Richard Evans took part, as did former Radio 1 controller Johnny Beerling. They were wondering-in passing-why i hadn't made anything of my 25 year anniversary as I joined Radio 1 a year ahead of Nicky. Well here's the answer guys: until this morning I hadn't done the sums. Also there comes a time when you don't fancy reminding the bosses quite how long you've been knocking around in case they have some crazy idea about 'freshening things up' and 'introducing some new faces'. That will never do. So let's keep this a little blog secret. I won't tell if you don't.

Today it is Paul Merton as our guest after 6. He returned to stand-up earlier this year with a 50 date tour and has just opened a show at the Vaudeville Theatre in London, last night in the gracious presence of Sally Traffic. I last interviewed him about his love for silent movies but there is no doubt that through Have I Got News For You and Just A Minute he is one of our favourite funny men.

And oldies please for the FIRST PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE which takes place tonight. OBAMA V ROMNEY should be a fascinating encounter but it lacks musical direction which is where you come in. Thanks.

Have a cheery and optimistic Wednesday, see you after 5

Morning Simon (no 'freshening up required) and blogpoppets.

One of my favourite 'roles' (and some days it seems they are endless) is that I teach US Politics for A-level and so I can't wait for the debate (although as it's not on til 2.30am it will be recorded) - Romney seems to have shot himself in the foot in recent months, so it will be fascinating to see how he performs.

Morning Simon, team, NYM, and veteran bloggers,

I knew I’d been working for the same company for too long when they started referring to me as “seasoned”. With what? Paprika and sea salt?

I don’t know if there have ever been comments about the school-run conversations. These little nuggets are priceless – hope you’re recording them somewhere. A friend of mine is a teacher, and records a quote from her little Reception dahlings on FB every day. They’re priceless. For that reason I always volunteer to pick up GoodChild#3 from the Fri night school disco – the discussions from the back of the car are so amusing. Last week’s gem: “I got me a ginger”. I couldn’t resist asking if this “ginger” had a name. “Nah, we just danced”.

#13 It's been said before, but worth repeating - we don't "own" the songs we suggest. Repetitions are fine, and Simon more often than not will read out two or three names for each oldie played. As long as it's not blatant copying out of someone else's suggestions - but I'm sure none of us would do that... Otherwise, it would be very unfair on bloggers who can't get here till later on in the day, when all the best suggestions are likely to have already been made...

You'll get more sense out of elephants than politicians.

A sports journo tweeted last night that Paxman had been incredibly rude to a labour politician on Newsnight last night, shaking his head, sighing, head in hands etc. But after seeing the scenes of various politicians on their feet with loving looks on their faces when applauding their leader's speach, when you know any one of them would stab him in the back if they felt it was right to do so, I felt like being rude to policitians as well. Truly nauseating stuff. Last week's was the same and I'll feel exactly the same about next week's as well - no bias here with regard to political conferences and debates :-)

#12 Re 'things the kids say' my 13 year old said the other day 'I wish we still had tails, it would make life so much more interesting'.

She has a disco a week Fri when they are being forced together with the local boy's school (just think, Mr M, if SBS did that with Malvern Hall school, we might have met!)

I think the Times today may have the details of the archive project Simon was referring to a few weeks ago. They want to put all of their Maida Vale sessions and live concert material online, and are talking to iTunes and Spotify etc. about it because they have deals with the record companies already.

If it comes off, what a brilliant resource! Use of the archives was one of the key tenants behind the creation of 6Music, and I don't think they achieved that in the way I hoped. Lots of stuff in there is broadcast in pieces, or only partial concerts etc. that maybe entirely necessary -I doubt the station would be sustainable playing only archive material.

This would really fill the gap. Looking forward to being able to hear the Colosseum II session from Fluff's show round the time of the War Dance album. And the In Concert from the same period!

Florence - ha not just me then - the tag line of a certain large supermarket who reported a 10% fall in profits today

Thanks Ken. Might be the excuse I need to try spotify - problems with getting in Ireland though.

Listening to Rad Mac on 6 Music - ridiculing Simon Cowell’s sheep placenta facials – I actually know people who like him – there is no accounting for taste.

Afternoon lovely bloggerfolk! Have only just arrived home from the school run this morning. Had a few errands to do afterwards. Have been back on to yesterday's blog and saw that Katy very kindly awarded me a hat. Very honoured to be the first wearer of the new design. Had I known, I would have enjoyed wearing it as I strolled around Salisbury this morning. Being the last day of Salisbury Fashion Week, I would have been entirely aligned (there's a first for everything!)

Anyway, off to read back. Have read Simon's bit - really glad I wasn't on your school run this morning. Simultaneous what?!! The trickiest discussion in which I have ever participated followed the question 'does God wear sandals'.

Hey ho - see you later x

Glad you've worked it out Amelia! When I first saw it on here, I couldn't fathom it out but then the light dawned.........aaahh! Do you understand it now, Florence?

I probably heard your tweet last week, Suzieeeeeee and didn't know it! Too late now, it will have gone.

He didn't come this week because the poorly Mr is watching rubbish on the tele and I couldn't be bothered to find the headphones. Maybe I will listen this afternoon when he drops off for a nap, as he undoubtably will - bless his cotton socks.

Just catching up with today and yesterday and I was thrilled to see that Katy had made some hats especially for me ....... and then realised not ;)

Ah well - maybe I'll be eligible for one at some point!

I know it is too late and I'm not serious but Mooh

This is a song for politicians the like:

I really want you James blunt

I really want you to really want me, but I really don't know if you can do that.

I know you want to know what's right but I know it's so hard for you to do that.

And time's running out as often it does, and often dictates that you can't do that.

No matter what I say or do, the message isn't getting through,

No nap as yet but he has decided that a slice of last year's Ch*****as cake (that was frozen) will aid him on his road to recovery - there's nothing wrong with his appetite!

Thought I might just leave my hat here on the 99-step so that whoever gets the 100 can scoop it up and pop it on. Have enjoyed wearing it today.
