Above par
Gloomy skies, drizzle, heating on. October indeed. A weekend of re-writes, cooking and trying to resist the siren call of the golf. If I had succumbed, two days would have disappeared down the tv-shaped hole and that would never do. So instead I held out until the bitter end but then watched the final climactic hour. Given that my very own THFC had beaten Manchester Utd on Saturday, this was making a rather splendid weekend all round. But I can't just sit/stand and watch/listen sport anymore as it is all too stressful. So washing up/ironing/cooking while occasionally checking scores works just fine. This is the equivalent of watching sport on ceefax which used to be my preferred option; the scorecheck and the 2 minute wait for it to update was perfect for allowing you to get on with life while keeping tabs on your team. Steam-based technology!
All that and reading too. 3 books on the go. One is a possible future book club choice, one is the current selection from Jacqueline Wilson 'Emerald Star' (read whilst here) and the other is 'Oblivion' by the masterful Anthony Horowitz. This man is on fire! His Sherlock Holmes book 'The House of Silk' got great revues (including this weekend from Philip Pullman) and he worked on Tintin with Steven Spielberg. Now he has completed what he thinks is his best ever work and it is a monster of a read. It's the concluding part of a pentalogy (I checked) about 5 children with special powers to take on the evil Old Ones. They are sort of children's books but sort of not too. A splendid grey area! Anthony is a force of nature and hear more from 6.
And for the oldies I think COMEBACKS might work. After the European golfers comeback from 10-4 down at one stage to win the Ryder Cup 14 and a half to 13 and a half (can't do fractions on this board), let us salute the REVERSAL OF FORTUNE and comebacks will sound good tonight. Which is where you come in of course.
Have a healthy and bouncy Monday, see you after 5.

So the question is even in the midst of an economic collapse why our we being anything but economic when it comes ter winning and WINNING BIG!!!!!!????
I think long and 'ard why are people from aged 16 ter 40 doing it BIG when it comes ter winning in their chosen sport that they are 'ighly talented at competeing in!!!!!!?????
A think locally of if I wanted ter take up each sport could I do it now.... And could I 'ave done it when I was a child!!!!!!????
Aged 39 and three quarters a was a child in the 70's and 80's!!!!
Tennis - Could I take up tennis???
When I was child it was more difficult... Only clubs locally geared more for the middle ter upper classes and outdoors!!!!!
We now 'ave The Wirral Tennis Centre... A mervelous marvel of indoors facilities that's perfect for playing in our 'arsh autumn and winter weather.... AND not expensive... So yes this would set a keen tennis playing child on a better chance of a path ter the BIG time!!!!!
Golf - We 'ad plenty of pitch 'n putt course for kids and adults!!!!!
INDEED aged 6 a gotta 'ole in one at New Brighton pitch 'n putt!!!!!
Many beautiful golf courses we 'ave... but again many for the more wealthy!!!!!
Although we do 'ave many municiple courses locally!!!!!
But the difference now from when a was a child... We 'ave driving ranges that we didn't 'ave!!!!
One VERY near ter where a grew up as a child!!!!!!
And slighlty further the excellent facilities a Carden Park And Ellesmer Port too... all giving a youngster a better chance of reaching the top!!!!!
Athletics - All we 'ad was an old outdoors gravel running track... Don't know too much about athletics but even so what springs ter mind is an new running track nearby for school children and the indoor running track at a gym a was a member of... Again better than when a was a child!!!!!!!
Cycling - The sport a did th emost as a child but not as a sport... More as a 'obby, ter get from A terrrrrrr B and ter keep fit!!!!!
We always 'ad the wonderful seaside paths on The Wirral but crazy weather at this time of year and through the winter!!!!!
But could a legally use the seaside paths on a cycle???
Now we 'ave designated cycle lanes everywhere.... INDEED as a child a used ter cycle along the sea path and used ter get miresable adutls daily blocking my path and making remarks about cycle should not be using the path!!!!!!
It was a grey area as the 'air usually was on the adults blocking my path on their path!!!!!!
Was the path just a path or could cycles use it?????
Cycles are not mean't ter be used on foot paths... but by the sea many cyclists would cycle along the coast... I remember the wonderful summers we 'ad!!!!
The difference now is the path along the coast now 'as signs stating it is shared for cycles and people on foot.... Silencing the miserys who used ter get pleasure from bullying me on me daily cycle ride!!!!!!!
And we 'ave cycle lanes all over the place!!!!!
But best of all.... The UK's first velodrome built 30 miles away in Manchester!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just looking inter the 4 sports above.... Yes facilities 'ave greatly improved.... Which make sme think are the fruits of these facilties now bearing fruit with all the sporting success the Uk is experiencing??????
Am sure the answer is YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It doesn;t 'appen over night ter create champions.... But 10 plus years of 'aving these wonderful facilites.... All over the UK... Champions are now being produced!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When a finally manage ter 'ave kids of my own... A for one want ter very much encourage them ter get inter sport!!!!!!!
A went ter the Women's British golf open at 'oylake a few weeks ago... Watching the women play a was thinking 'ow proud a would be if my daughter was one of those competing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe 'ave 'ad my chance gone by now... Ok for now am doing me cycling.... But if a don't get ter where a wanted ter be.....
Then a will put all me energy on 'elpin gme kids ter do what the wanter do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Something that for sure will be easier for me ter do than it was for my parents do ter with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A think this is just the beginning of Great Britain getting it's greatness back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved the Anthony Horowitz interview; great enthusiasm and passion. His books are on my huge pile of "books I want to read". Gorgeous pink sky this morning as I was walking the dogpoppet. Needless to say I didn't have my camera with me. I should be like Florence and take it wherever I go, just in case...
Well done for the menshes last night, especially Paul's showstopper. I wasn't familiar with the song, but an excellent choice! Really enjoyed the interview with Anthony Horowitz - what a talented and prolific writer! How can somebody possibly have a whole trilogy in his head, waiting to be written down! And such a nice man too. I imagine Simon was quite flattered that he'd read 'Itch'... And I had to smile at the slightly awkward pause when AH asked Simon if his wife had read '50 Shades'.. ;o)
Did anyone see 'The History of Light Entertainment' on BBC 4 on Sunday evening? Mr B tells me our esteemed leader was on, talking about his days on Radio 1. I'm going to have a look for it on iThingy later.
See you on the next page...
