Small feet, small ears.

Simon Mayo|08:57 UK time, Friday, 28 September 2012

Think I'll go with a dress-down Friday theme today; jeans, t-shirt and an air of slovenliness. This of course is how I approach most days and am grateful every morning that I don't need to be suited and booted on a regular basis. The glories of radio. Had to be a bit smarter at 5 LIve in case someone important turned up but only slightly. An ironed t-shirt being the absolute minimum needed which seems fair enough. It is unlikely that anyone important will turn up today however. The 2 show Friday starts at 12 today due to the Ryder Cup taking over on 5L and we only get an hour to squeeze everything in. My guess is I'll get to say at least a sentence or two.

Plus, casual attire fine today because there are no school visits scheduled. I struggle a bit on these trips to know what to wear. Staff obviously need to be smart pour encourager les autres and they don't need some DJ scruff to come and give the wrong impression. So a jacket on top seems a good compromise. Yesterday, in the deepest parts of wooded Surrey, all went well and I was wearing a sweater! So we might have had a few new Year 10 listeners yesterday (14/15 year olds as I knew really, just forgot. Ahem). Hope they enjoyed the Frank Sinatra!

And so eventually to R2 and the ARF for a selection of weekend treats. Claim that crown back right now.

Have a casual, insouciant Friday. See you after 12 and 5.

    Good Morning again -

Question - from yesterday's blog - Do I change my name? Drop the "l" officially? Ha!

    An ARFO?

Have I ever requested THE BEAT by The Look? Top Tune!

    Shall I request it today?

    ARFO PLEASE -

    THE BEAT by The Look

    Have Fab Fridays everyone!

  • Comment number 2.

Happy Friday Simon, team and lovely blog people

Cold here but I am still resisting the heating.

I meant to say yesterday perhaps Simon’s hands only look a normal size in comparison to DrK’s large flappy ones? As for his ears, can’t say I every paid that much attention!

Billie - from over the page - there is something childishly funny if you do drop the l for a little while anyway.

No joy with Mumford tickets Shona - I did try though!

Another Friday, another hat-trick of hats thrown for the ARFO

FIELDS OF FIRE - BIG COUNTRY

    TEENAGE KICKS - THE UNDERTONES

    MAYBELLINE - CHUCK BERRY

  • Comment number 3.

Morning! Seems like I missed a good show yesterday - another day to listen back. No ARFO suggestion, but just wanted to wish everyone a good weekend x

  • Comment number 4.

Good morning all -dry and not too chilly today

LETS TWIST AGAIN - CHUBBY CHECKER

would really get the weekend off to a great start so "come on everybody ............."

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

A cold but bright one here. Resisted putting the heating on at home, but I'm grateful for a nice warm office...

    #ARFO

ALL OVER THE WORLD - ELO

WHILE YOU SEE A CHANCE - Steve Winwood

SOMETHING ABOUT YOU - Level 42

Morning Simon, team, NYM, and well-pressed bloggers,

Need to be quick as I have multiple windows open trying to get Mumford tickets. I hate that T**ketmaster site! And to add insult to injury, tickets are already available on other websites for double the price. Grrrrrrrrr.

Could this be the week your Lordship's size 7's tap along to this fine ARFO tune...?

JOHNNY BE GOOD - Chuck Berry

or, as an alternative in a similar stylee

AT THE HOP - Danny & The Juniors

    Good day all!

  • Comment number 7.

    Good morning all,

A bit bleary eyed after the concert last night. The Beach Boys were fantastic, it is incredible to believe that they are in their late 60's early 70's. I was going to choose 'I Get Around' for ARFO, but see that this was played yesterday for the golf oldies theme. So I would like to proffer:

    Geno - Dexy's Midnight Runners

The Story Of The Blues - Wah

Everybody Wants To Rule The World - Tears For Fears

Off to wax my surf board.......... ;-)

    Mornin' all...

As we're off to see Nik Kershaw tonight, why not start with Nik Kershaw - The Riddle?

I've got no idea what he's singing about to be honest, but then again I have very little clue about life in general - it's all a riddle to me.

    Have a good weekend everyone.

    TTFN.

  • Comment number 9.

#1 Billie, as Amelia says it would be très amusant - so go for it, why not!

Although actually... do we even need to suffix our names with 'on the blog' or prefix with 'blogger'? Simon says it anyway, and you don't get people calling themselves 'John Smith on Twitter' or 'Facebooker Mary Jane'... Although again... just to counter my own argument - there is something about labelling oneself 'blogger', it's like we're all part of a special club. Rather nice...

    ;o)

Cold and wet here - heating definitely back on!

    Good Morning All;

Back to rain and grey skies here, *sigh* the sunshine didn't last long. Oh well, that's what you get when you're on the cusp of October, I suppose. October?!!! Where has the year gone? It has really felt like these last few years have flown by with indecent haste, maybe it's just me. :-/

Anyway, enough maudlin talk, onto the business of the day, ARFO suggestions...

YOU SHOOK ME (ALL NIGHT LONG) - AC/DC

    LOUIE LOUIE - THE KINGSMEN

    SWEET CAROLINE - NEIL DIAMOND

THE IRISH ROVER - THE POGUES & THE DUBLINERS

An eclectic mix, to be sure! :D

  • Comment number 12.

Good morning Blogpoppets one and all – a lovely ride in with sunrises and rainbows. Not much stamping bits of paper today, more ripping things up – very therapeutic. Anyway can I try with:

BLINDED BY THE LIGHT – MANFRED MAN’S EARTH BAND

I spoke too soon – paper is on it’s way to me to be stamped.

  • Comment number 13.

Simon, if you ever need to borrow a pair of shoes, I'm a size seven!! ;-)

  • Comment number 14.

#1 Billie on the Bog, I think the reason your selection is never played is that its called 'I Am the Beat' and clearly the youngster in charge of pre-selection is confusing it with either a record by The Beat or the song 'The Look' by my favourite Swedish band, Roxette!

I also love that record - particulalrly the line about Mr Gruber, whatever its referring to!

  • Comment number 15.

Inspired by the second cup of the morning...I may have just what you need to go with small feet and small ears....

SHA LA LA LA LEE - Small Faces

WHAT'CHA GONNA DO ABOUT IT - Small Faces

    SHAKE - Small Faces

    ROLLIN' OVER - Small Faces

  • Comment number 16.

I forgot to actually request an ARFO or two:

ONE NIGHT IN BANGKOK - Murray Head

YOU KEEP ME HANGING ON - Kim Wilde

ONCE IN A LIFETIME - Talking Heads

  • Comment number 17.

Well I thought hubbs had indecently small feet at size 8, but turns out there is no need for embaresment :-) You has 'dancin' feet' my lord and should put them to good use!

A soggy morning here, rain back with gusto. It had better stop soon.

Rather bothered about cherubs mogpoppet who hasent eaten for 24 hours. He's a substantial lad so the lack of fud shouldent harm him, but how long should I leave it before calling in a vet?? Questions questions.

  • Comment number 18.

    Hello all.

A quick poop by for ARFO and then back later to catch-up and chat:

Do Do Ron Ron - The Crystals

    or

Do Wah Diddy - Manfred Mann

    I seem to be in a 'Do ..... ' mood :)

  • Comment number 19.

Soon, i.e probably today. It isn't good for cats to go without food for long.

  • Comment number 20.

Good Morning Each! I'd like to claim back the ARF crown, hopefully with one of these...

'Schooldays' by Chuck Berry (for those new Y10 listeners. Let's show 'em how we roll round here)

    'Everlasting Love' by Love Affair.

    'Rubber Bullets' by 10CC

'Living After Midnight' by Judas Priest

    'Hey Jealousy' by Gin Blossoms

A quick skip through a few decades of the last century, there.

Incidentally, Simon. Size 7 feet? How on earth do you manage to keep yourself balanced and perpendicular to the ground? I imagine you must sink into the lawn whilst going about fox patrol on the estate. Have you considered divers flippers?

  • Comment number 22.

My day seems to have gone in a psychedelic direction.....

HUSH - DEEP PURPLE or KULA SHAKER, whatever you prefer.

  • Comment number 23.

Apropos of today's blog title, apparently your ears never stop growing...

    ;o)

#17 Is he drinking, Gill? And does he appear otherwise well? It sounds like he may have eaten something that's disagreed with him. As long as he's taking in water you could probably leave it a bit longer, to give whatever it is the chance to work its way through his system, rather than forking out the arm and the leg the vet will no doubt charge you for his services... But if he's not drinking (or drinking excessively) then take him off down the V. E. T. Hope he's better soon.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 24.

#19 #21 #23 Of course, Smee may well know better than me... I don't even have a cat, just using common sense. In which case feel free to ignore my advice...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 25.

#17. If he's anything like Jasper, the ginger King of Sheffield, he will have eaten in the last 24 hours. Just not at your place. Our neighbours often see Jas scoffing from Tiddles or Tabitha's bowls. And, if the weather turns whilst he's out patrolling hither and yon, he is quite happy to take the generous offers of shelter that in his mind, people seem to have offered. Mrs Slavins wardrobe is a favourite spot, seemingly.

  • Comment number 26.

Thanks for the advice Smee & Deebee.

He usually wolfes down his food and then tries to steel the other cat's, but this morning was the 3rd meal in a row he's turned his nose up at. Nibbled a little at some biscuits this morn, but didnt clean them up as usual. Seems very down in the dumps :-(

    Poor lad.

    Morning everyone

Sunny but very windy here and the farmer is busy ploughing over in the field. My dogs won't be happy with those huge clods of soil instead of a nice stubbly field to run around in!

    Morning All,

    ARF suggestions

    'Start Me Up' Rolling Stones

    'Stay With Me' The Faces

    Gave a good day everybody

  • Comment number 30.

I keep suggesting it, and you really must play "Editions of You" by Roxy Music (please)

  • Comment number 31.

#30 Paul, great choice. Don't hear it nearly enough on the radio.

  • Comment number 32.

Gill - I hope there's nothing too serious wrong with your mogpoppet.

PoS - Jasper sounds like quite a cad :)

Feet - especially in girls are getting bigger and it's now entirely normal for teenage girls to have size 7 or 8 feet. When I was living-in at a boarding school I came back one day to see a pair or large trainers in the front hall and went on a rampage to find out who'd brought a boy into the house ...... (strictly not allowed without a member of staff in the hour), only for a poor, chastened girl to come down the stairs and sheepishly admit the trainers were in fact hers! I then couldn't help but explain "good lord, but they're huge!" I felt terrible!

  • Comment number 33.

    Morning all

Quick poop in as busy again!

    Can I suggest

THE JAM - A TOWN CALLED MALICE

    OR

HEROES & VILLAINS -THE BEACH BOYS

    for ARFO.

Not in good books today, as despite ensuring the daughter had done her spellings for the test today and her reading, daddy forgot to do her any lunch!

My excuse is that last year she had school dinners on Friday, as it was pizza day, but that's now on Wed instead so clearly running on auto-pilot this morning!

    Morning all

John Hiatt's facebook page posted a link to the Beeb rady for his sesson on BH Country last night. One presumably American fan who musth ave caught the tail end of Drive thought a cookery show on the radio was an odd concept CRAZY ENGLISH was his verdict :-).

But I guess the overall mix of stuff on any UK daytime show would be a completely strange concept to the Americans given that they tend to have whole readio stations that pump out the same sort of stuff 24/7/365.

  • Comment number 35.

Hope your mogpoppet is okay, Gill. If only pets could tell us what was wrong...

My daughter takes size 8 shoes. She's quite tall too, so finds it difficult to get fashionable shoes that don't make her tower above everybody else. I on the other hand am a petite 5ft 4, with a shoe size 4 1/2 or 5.

#34 Yes I suppose on the face of it cookery on the radio must seem a bit strange. But then so does sport on the radio, and that seems to work. And don't you mean 24/7/52...?

    ;o)

    Back again!

Vet says she thinks he's eaten something thats disagreed with him. An injection has been dispensed and a follow-up appointment made for tomorrow morning which incidently is stacking up to be a busy one as we are also visiting the local High School open day. Oh the joys of parenthood.

Gee whizz im hungrey. Anyone got any edibles going spare?

  • Comment number 37.

Gill - I hope your moggie is ok. Animals are a worry when they are sick/under par.

Paul - Jasper sounds like a true moggie; the world being there for his benefit and he takes advantage of it whenever he can.

Sadly, our two moggies have long gone to the great moggery in the sky but they were great company - when they deigned to bless us with their company!

    Hi Simon and everyone

    Where's my post?

I think I am have previewed but not posted! Doh! blond moment!

just saying what a corker last nights show appeared to be much to my annoyance as I only caught last 5 minutes due to being stuck at work as it is my last day today. Speaking of which after collecting some clients books first thing and generally chatting to them they asked me for my details when they knew I was contractless from Monday (yippee 1st private client!)

When I got back to the office I was greeted with chocs, flowers and fruit ( do they think I am leaving due to illness or something!!) I am touched though! Not keen on choc or flowers as they look like dandelions!

    And now for an ARFO:

    RADAR LOVE - Golden Earring.

    Back laters

Hi Simon, team and all of you who genuflect at the ARFO alter!

I need some serious, professional song selection counseling because I'm intimidated by ARFO, I usually don't offer anything on Friday. I do try to guess which one will be picked and never got that one either. Poor me.

    Bingo Star, what a Friday!

Curries cooked ready for tomorrow - chicken korma (ish), lamb and butternut squash madras and a veggie curry - hopefully they won't get sabotaged tonight by a strange creature that we have living in our fridge - the fridge mouse. He eats wedges of cheese and any other delectables which are left in there. Have never caught him red - pawed............. yet. ;0)

  • Comment number 51.

Lilac Blue, Simon did once give a definition of what the ARFO should be like - can't remember it exactly, but it should be loud, cheerful and get people's feet tapping and their hands thumping the steering wheel... There's no need to be intimidated though! Although admittedly gaining the ARFO crown is quite an achievement - many have never won it at all, and quite a few have only had it once. I think basically most people just suggest anything they want to hear. There is a blog list somewhere of all the ARFO songs that have been played - Katy had it but someone else (Paul?) may also be able to produce it, and you can also find it if you are on Facebook, on the Blogpoppets of Simon Mayo's Drive Time Show page.

Afternoon all! Would anyone mind if I offload?

I can't believe this, but I popped into a local garden centre today to pick up some bulbs that I want to plant over the weekend and as I went to pay, I had to pick my way through a large display of fake C*******s trees that were nestling next to the barbeques and outdoor furniture. It's not even October yet. Bah humbug! As if that's not enough, I notice from the news-stand today that chips cause cancer and sleeping tablets cause dementia. Harrumph! Thank goodness Mr Hollywood said that we could eat cake and bread, although I'm expecting a headline soon to say that those too probably have nasty effects on the human body*

OK, that's my lot. Feeling better now. Have good weekends all

Just a pick popping by to say congratulations to King Paul (PoS makes you sound like merchandise) good choice! And loved Simon's enthusiasm.

4 ARFO! Hardly a guilty secret, be proud.

I think I know where I've been going wrong with ARFO suggestions. I've not included cheeky comments about Lord A's physical appearance - I will try harder next Friday.

Will read back over the weekend.

As Ameilia, said, we should be proud, not embarrassed about it... although I do hope those who have not had an ARFO yet, will soon have their song chosen! ;o)

Unfortunately the timing of the cinema trip means I'll miss Level 42 on Dermot O'Leary's show this afternoon. Will look forward to listening on iThingy later.

#78 Shona... Brian Matthew played three-in-a-row for me and one of the songs I have often asked for as a ARFO... 'Bringing on back the Good Times' by Love Affair, but I've never been lucky with it, (not a complaint) although it was great hearing Paul's Love Affair song played yesterday.

I wonder if your uncle Tony will give you a mensh this afternoon! x

#79 I must be out of favour with Uncle Tony, Flo. No shout out for a long time now

Moggpoppet seems a little brighter today, the spare bedroom carpet on the other hand is not looking at all healthy having taken the brunt of his upset tummy (carpet cleaner anyone?).

Had a fantastic morning at the local high school open day. I feel totally chilled out about cherub going there now, though kinda with I was going too. My own high school had none of the opportunities to learn this one has.

(its got its own recording studio !?)

    See you all tomorrow

Good Morning - wet & windy here.

A very busy day yesterday in the garden in lovely sunshine. Prob. not manage to get out there today.

Gill & Jennie - glad to hear you've been having Nicetimes and glad to hear the poorly cat is improving. If Shona is still abed -she must have had Nicetimes too!

    Good Morning All

Windy here too, but dry so far. Glad to hear your mogpoppet is getting better Gill, and that the school visit went well.

Anna Karenina was an "interesting" film - rather stylised, and I'm still thinking about it and still not sure if I liked it. The whole thing was set up as if it was on a stage - occasionally you would see scenery being moved or people in the background being a 'chorus'. But in the same way that when you go to see a play you're not constantly thinking 'this is a play' it wasn't too much of a distraction, although I must admit I didn't really see the point of doing it that way. It was quite a long time ago that I read the book, and I could only vaguely remember the plot (I remembered the ending), but as it's a fairly massive tome I think they left quite big chunks out of it. The acting was superb - I'm not a huge Keira Knightly fan but she did very well, and Jude Law was excellent (and almost unrecognisable) as her husband - although he seemed to have borrowed Simon's glasses...

Tonight my daughter and I are going to see Michael McIntyre at the O2 in London. Really looking forward to that - he's one of the few comedians around these days who is able to be funny without feeling the need to make constant use of swear words. Quite refreshing... not that I'm a prude or anything - I'm a big fan of Lee Mack and he can be quite blue!

Have a good day one and all.

Good morning - the sun is shining and no need for the heating today - yet!

Lazy day today, I think - Mr has injured himself, playing golf yesterday. He has pulled a muscle or tweeked a nerve or something (?) in his arm so needs ministering to with heat cream and massage etc. And he needs his rest this morning so that he is ready for the end of The Ryder Cup this evening. ;0)

Hopefully, it won't end too late.

Enjoy your Sundays everyone - especially Billie who "does like a Sunday".....

#85 Deebee... I hope you enjoy Michael McIntyre tonight. We saw him in Edinburgh, during the Festival, in a much smaller venue that the 02, the day after Andy Murray won his Olympic Gold Medal, so he spent the first ten minutes cracking jokes about Andy. We went to see Kevin Bridges two weeks ago and he's brilliant too... and just like John Bishop, Michael and Kevin are hilariously funny about real-life situations they have encountered and Michael McIntyre spent a funny few minutes going on about people's names! :o))

#80 Shona, I wonder what you've done to upset your uncle Tony.... maybe his wife was beginning to ask questions about the often mentioned, 'Shona from Stirling'! ;o)

The other option far too noisy for a lovely peaceful Sunday afternoon :)

What a great night we had playing all the old singles! We still remembered all the dance steps for Do The Huckle Buck (we devised 40 years ago) to vino collapso with Banana Rock, The Wombles at midnight!

Up early though Billie and took Lesley (long lost friend) over the Duke's Pass. The weather and scenery were beautiful and she really enjoyed her day.

Deebee, hope you enjoyed Michael MacIntyre. I think he is excellent!

#88 Flo, that made me laugh ;)

The golf is in full swing (sorry!)and Mr is avidly watching every stroke - I do hope we win but it is all a bit drawn out for me; I just peek over the top of a book every now and then and produce sustenance and liquid refreshment when it is required.

Sounds like you had a lovely time with Long Lost Lesley over the weekend, Shona. Isn't it incredible what we can drag from the recesses of our mind when we have to?

    Good Evening Everyone.

Good to hear that you're all finding enjoyment!

#86 Jennie - I DO! I DO! But our normal Sunday is Mr. going for a walk - me staying in my jamas - he getting the papers - MollyCoddling - see posts passim - and a very relaxed day which might involve a bit of light gardening -with R2 on most of the day - LOVE EP - LOVE JW - LOVE Mr. O'Grady!

Today was different - it rained almost non-stop - still we drove to Holyhead - about 17 miles each way - and we bought some "puffery" - a new triangular Rattan Laundry Basket - a Pine Bedding Box - a DoorBell - some Extention Leads - one so that we can run two bedside lights from one plug - a Companion Set for the fire -

"Companion Set" - where did that originate? - lots of "homemaking" stuff - and we are very pleased with our purchases.

We have decide to miss the evictions - even though that means missing Gary - we shall have Mr. Davies at our table for Mediterranean Roast Veg. topped with Mozz.

He doesn't appreciate anything - the pleb!

Going to KB a few tunes in the meantime - BTW - I do Macarthur Park really well -

but I miss out all the chords in the middle and then come back to finish it off rather grandly!

    Love to you all!

    Morning all.

Stayed up far too late listening to Ryder Cup nail-biting glory last night so feel a bit 'wrung-out' this morning. I hope everyone had good weekends and that the weather isn't to awful wherever you are.

Catch you all on the new blog.....

    Good Morning All -

The weather hasn't decided yet ........................

@ Jeffrey - I DO like a coincidence - didn't catch this show - just saw it listed in RT - "Gene Krupa - Drumming Man - Stewart Copeland continues the profile of massively influential drummer Gene Krupa (1909 - 73)" !!!

Legs feeling a bit sore today. Serves me right for all the high kick dancing on Saturday night to The Huckle Buck ;) *wishes to be a teenager again*

    Morning everyone

A lovely sunny, autumnal and chilly start to the day here.

So pleased that Europe has retained the Ryder Cup, which I think is to be in Scotland, 'the home of golf', next time, so that pleases my golf-mad husband! Just as well the policeman who gave the very late Rory McIlroy a lift to the course wasn't a golf fan, otherwise he may have taken him the long way round so that he'd miss his tee-off time!

Be careful with all the high-kicking, Hucklebuck stuff Shona... glad you had fun!
