Healthwatch

Simon Mayo|08:43 UK time, Thursday, 27 September 2012

Waterloo I think. That's what the man said anyway. But it's very early and dark, so frankly who knows? And I'm yet to check the details as no coffee has yet been imbibed. I know it's a drug and that breeds dependency but it is used in moderation. A cardiologist once told me that watching coffee was good but that a few squares of dark chocolate and a drink of diet cola (silly phrase) would have the same effect on my heart. So watch all of it basically (nb she didn't say stop, she just said 'watch' which I do). After Paul Hollywoods visit, along with buns and bread, there are a few more things we will need to 'watch'.

I was a late convert to coffee anyway, only starting when I was deputising for Adrian John on the early show for Radio 1, so this is 86/87. Until then I didn't like any hot drinks but the studios had a coffee machine which made exceptionally strong brews and, needing something to whet the whistle, took what I needed. Within a few weeks I was hooked. I'm thinking of sending Adrain John any future medical bills that accrue as a result of his carelessly wanting time off.

More food today! The sourdough bread and Chelsea buns were enough to keep us going for a while but Nigel fills any gap that might have appeared with Hake, cider and clotted cream. My cardiologist might have something to say about that too.

Oldies please for the start of the RYDER CUP where the European golfers take on the Americans and we are suddenly good Europeans for a few days at least. It's all happening in Chicago which might take you down a few other alleys...

Have a well-controlled and organised Thursday. See you after 5.

    Good Morning again –

We’ve had The Ryder Cup as the theme before and some clever person – was it Tortie? – suggested RYDER WHITE SWAN by T Rex!

    Made me chuckle...

  • Comment number 4.

Morning Simon, team, NYM and cholesterol-watching bloggers,

Thanks for the mensh last night for Gabrielle - although the song sounded a bit more dreary than I remember it.... And then this morning on another radio station I heard Blueberry Hill, now that would have been a good 'un. I wonder where all the blueberries have come from in the last 10 years?

Golf? Never been on a golf course, never picked up a club, never worn the bad golfing clothes, but here goes....

    BAGGY TROUSERS - Madness

  • Comment number 6.

    Hi Simon and everyone.

Its surprising at all the places I have worked and there have been a few since 2008 when I started contracting, that it is the younger of the workforce that are not into hot drinks. I only drink coffee at work as tea is hard to make and I think tea at workplaces is unpredictable!!

    Anyway choons:

    1. 25 TO 6 OR 6 TO 4 - CHICAGO ( I think I may have got the title mixed up a bit!!)

    2. EAGLE - Abba

    3. RIDERS ON THE STORM - The Doors

Or by any other of a zillion people that have done the song.

    Morning!

Sadly missed the whole show last night due to unforseen circumstances but have coffee ready and will be listening back shortly.

My fuzzy brain can't think of a suitable suggestion on this theme. The only thing I have seen about the Ryder Cup this year is that the American crowd might make it a bit difficult for the Europeans so my choice would be:

THE ANGRY MOB - KAISER CHIEFS

I like coffee. It doesn't help that a local supermarket is running a promotion for a free coffee which I have been collecting daily after the school run. Today's is large.

Will be back later, hopefully, with belated mensh congrats for yesterday. Have good days all.

Ps. Thanks PoS for Roahd Dahl recipe book - got it from the local library.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

My son doesn't like hot drinks at all, and survives mostly on diet cola. An extremely unhealty drink in my opinion - do you know what they put in it? *shudders*

Not really playing - I know nothing whatsoever about golf - but I have tweeted:

WIND OF CHANGE - The Scorpions

    ...Chicago being the 'windy city'

And can I second/third/whatever EAGLE - one of Abba's finest choons IMHO

#104 Deebee on previous blog.... If you love the music from Phantom, do go and see the show because the tunes are even more emotional on stage, when the singers are in character, than on the record, and the same goes for the Les Mis songs.

    https://www.boxoffice.co.uk/arts-and-theatre-tickets/musicals/the-phantom-of-the-opera-edinburgh-reviews.aspx?o=or

It's been touring since March and moves on to Milton Keynes when it finishes here (end Oct/Nov) so is that within travelling distance for you?

    https://www.thephantomoftheoperatour.com/tour-dates

I was really surprised that Matt included me in his Mosh because I didn't even ask for a Mosh tune and a couple of weeks ago he included my name (in full) on another Mosh tune that I'd never even heard of and my sister-in-law texted me to ask how long had I been a fan of heavy metal? Many months ago I asked for a Ramones' song, so perhaps Matt had dug up old names, last night, from some time ago!

    And I'll add...

19th NERVOUS BREAKDOWN - ROLLING STONES

I GET AROUND - THE BEACH BOYS

GREEN GREEN GRASS OF HOME - TOM JONES

RIDERS ON THE STORM - THE DOORS

  • Comment number 22.

Morning everyone. The sun is shining here today, so hopefully that will continue.

I don't really drink hot drinks either; the occassional cup of tea when I'm with friends who drink it and a peppermint tea or low-cal hot chocolate on a Sunday afternoon from time to time but that's it. I do love Diet Coke - but keep it to one can a day - other than that I'm a straight water gal (which I do have hot from time to time) or a sugar-free squash. On a work day I probably drink about 2-3 litres of water.

Great Ryder Cup oldie suggestions so far and I can do little more than add my vote for:

Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits

    Eagle - ABBA

    Chicago - Frank Sinatra

Love is a Loser - Erasure (Davis Love III is captain for US)

Boys Keep Swinging - David Bowie

  • Comment number 23.

Thanks for the review over the page Florence. I am not a fan of musicals (although I do enjoy some of the older ones) but I love to read about your obvious enthusiasm. I do the same with bands I love and see them a few times during their tour. I saw Radiohead 4 times in a week when they last did a small theatre tour.

I love coffee but as I get older it doesn’t love me. So one very strong cup in the morning is my lot usually, then green tea for the rest of the day. Not a fan of fizzy pop, especially as I hate artificial sweeteners in anything. One of my earliest memories is stealing sips of mum’s black coffee when I was about 3 – I’ve been hooked on coffee since.

Straight Shooter – The Mamas & The Papas

Straighten Up and Fly Right – Nat King Cole

  • Comment number 24.

#20 Thanks Florence. I think Milton Keynes is about an hour away from us, so not too far. Although I'm not averse to travelling distances for something worth seeing - I went all the way to Salford (about 3.5 hours by train) for the Wittertainment Bond special, and I'm going to see Deacon Blue in Aberdeen soon...

Re drinks, I love both tea and coffee - probably drink about 2 or 3 cups of each in the course of a day. I'm not a coffee 'snob' but I do prefer 'real' coffee to instant, although there's a particular brand of instant I drink that's quite similar to the taste of filtered coffee. I also drink quite a lot of water. Can't abide anything labelled 'diet' or 'sugar free' - I don't like the taste of the saccherine they put in them, plus all the other additives which I'm sure don't do you any good... I know about our esteemed leader's affection for diet cola but hey - nobody's perfect...

    ;o)

  • Comment number 25.

#23 Ha! We posted very similar comments about drinks at about the same time, Amelia. I knew we had a lot in common...

    *runs away*

I am a coffee snob however.

  • Comment number 27.

#24 Deebee... an hour in the car sounds a doddle compared to the long ride to Salford... Deacon Blue in Aberdeen, I bet they are on your doorstep. We're going to see them on October 8th, so I wonder if you'll see them before me.

I wonder if your lovely friend Mo will be with you in Aberdeen!!! You'll enjoy a show in Scotland because from my experience of seeing the same show in London and Glasgow/Edinburgh/Newcastle (eg Bryan Adams and Tina Turner) the audiences further north are out for a good time... or maybe they're just noisier.. and I've heard many bands/artistes say they love playing in Scotland. Perhaps people in London take the many shows available, for granted, but up north they're not shy in showing their appreciation!

  • Comment number 28.

#23 Amelia... Radiohead four times in a week!! I've seen Bryan Adams, Tina Turner and Queen + Paul Rodgers twice in one week, and Phantom will be twice this week, but I've never seen anyone four times in a week... you're obviously a huge Radiohead fan... good for you, they are brilliant but I've never seen them. :o)

  • Comment number 29.

On the matter of drinks, hot or otherwise - I've never liked tea or coffee, but I do like the occasional hot chocolate over the colder months. I don't care for any other hot drinks, except a medicinal hot lemon and honey when I have a cold (like now!) I have occasionally indulged the mister in his passion for herbal teas, although most of them have been vile. I can just about stomach the fruity ones, but nettle and dandelion almost made me hurl!

I mostly drink water, sometimes with a bit of Vimto (with sugar) cordial. I never drink anything 'Diet' that's full of artificial sweetners, after reading all about the evils of aspartame many years ago. I was quite addicted to energy drinks at one time, but I've been off them for months now, no caffeine for me, and I feel much better for it. I will have an occasional milkshake, but that's about my lot.

Paul Hollywood said yesterday, that the key to it all is moderation, and that's what is lacking in our diets. I'm as guilty as the next person on that score, I tend to overindulge, where a little of what you fancy would do you good!

  • Comment number 30.

Florence - some artist make exactly that point recently. In London their view was the people's attitude is that "we have chosen you out of all the possible things we could have gone to see tonight so you had better be good".

There is different vibe to gigs in Scotland compared to some parts of England although most of my gig going was done in Yorkshire which is quite Scottish in my option.

  • Comment number 31.

Florence - I didn't mean to it just happened, different friends could only go on certain night etc and they are my favourite band so it was such a rare treat to see them in relatively small venues.

    Musicals aren't really my thing.

I took my parents to Miss Saigon for a Christmas present one year, and fully expected to hate every minute of it. But I really enjoyed it. Barrowman was in it, and very good.

I do have an issue in musicals with narrative/dialogue bits that are sung but aren't really "songs" - it all seems a bit of a mess to me, and Miss Saigon seems to have plenty of that sort of stuff in it. But "Last Night of the World" is gorgeous, and a proper song. I bought the soundtrack CD just for that.

    Here's one I haven't heard for ages...

HOLE IN MY LIFE - The Police

On the subject of coffee, I'm a bit of a snob too (what do you mean, you're not surprised). I used to drink endless mugs of coloured sludge water during the day. But then I moved to Seattle and lived there for a few years, where the making of coffee is treated like a religious ceremony. So now I have ONE/TWO cups of proper coffee in the morning, starting with fresh beans in the grinder, milk warmed and whizzed, and that's it for the day. (Ok, very occasionally I'll grab one on the go in the afternoon from one of those High St places). Apart from that it's water or herbal tea - and yes, both the fruity and non-fruity sort (peppermint, chamomile, ginger, green tea)

I've also worked with people who can't function without a can of cola on their desk the whole time. Makes my gut rot, diet or full fat, and that's before the stilton and banana episode. I'm usually tempted once a year, most likely when I'm on holiday or somewhere hot, and then regret it for the rest of the day.

And I HATE a normal english cup of typhoo/builders/breakfast/earl grey tea. Never drunk it, never will. Ughhhh, makes me feel sick even thinking about it.

And what's with lapsang souchon or rooibos? They taste like they've been made with the bits of wood leftover from the bonfire (or from Billie's woodburner!)

Going on a bit now. Preview & Post Comment. And I'm gone.

  • Comment number 38.

Mr Stilton - I am loving your new name and your attitude to coffee, my morning cup is made in the same fashion.

  • Comment number 39.

    Hello again!

Just pooped back to say congrats to a few people for last night - to Ponyclubmum, Stilton John, Skipping Shona and Florence. Also, was that a 3 worder for the lovely PSL at the beginning? The one about the autumnal manicure? If I have forgotten anyone, many apologies.

Enjoyed listening to Paul Hollywood. Shame I didn't listen to it in realtime because I came back in last night and hoovered down rather a little more than the 1 slice of Victoria sponge than is good for me according to the master baker. Don't know about anyone else, but the whole section made me feel especially hungry.

It was good to hear Paul Gambaccini talking about Andy Williams - although as Simon said, he only ever seems to appear on Drivetime when someone has died.

Finally, was the financial man that Rebecca interviewed called 'Jeremy Stretch'? I love interesting surnames - used to collect them on my travels with my work colleagues. My favourites were Mr Gamble (a financial adviser) and Mr Barstuhl - any interesting blogger surnames (real or otherwise!) that you might like to share with me?!!

OK, its lunchtime. Have a fab and groovy afternoon all x

  • Comment number 40.

Frankly concerned by Mr Stilton's attitude to tea though. Dear oh dear. It's amber nectar I tell you! (I take one or two pints of the stuff in the morning. Honest, I could give it up any time...)

Mind you, on the other hand, Rooibos is just odd. I don't quite understand why so many people love the stuff.

#35 Ken, I'm pleased that you surprised yourself by enjoying Miss Saigon and I agree that 'Last Night of the World' is gorgeous and so is 'Sun and Moon' and several other songs are good.

I first saw Miss Saigon in 1989 with Lea Salonga, Simon Bowman and Christopher Pryce as a creepy pimp and found Lea's voice, spine-tingling at times... their singing was beautiful. I think enjoyment of musicals is helped if you know several of the songs beforehand as well as an idea of the story.

The night we went to see it at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, there was an earthquake in the Philippines area where several of the cast were from and after the show the main characters were outside the theatre collecting money, signing autographs and happy to have their pictures taken.

Claire Moore played Ellen that night and I think Deebee and Zoe saw her at Salford... she would be 23 years older now and I can't believe it was so long ago!

    Albatross - Fleetwood Mac

    Bogey Music - Paul McCartney

Fly Like and Eagle - Brian Adams

  • Comment number 50.

#46 That's right Flo - Clare Moore was involved in the 5 Live/Radio 2 Bond special - she did a really good version of 'Goldfinger' and sang backing vocals for Lance Ellington in 'Live and Let Die'.

Was 'One Night in Bankok' in Miss Saigon?

I may be a bit fussy about coffee, but for tea I only really drink the 'ordinary' stuff - not too strong and with a dash of milk in. I don't on the whole like the herbal or fruity teas - I think they always sound more interesting than they taste - although I will drink camomile tea if I can't sleep and peppermint tea if I have an upset stomach.

#39 Hoffs, I have an unusual surname - my maiden name, that is. I'll tell you about it off-blog - I don't want to risk Simon starting to call me by it...

Far too late for choon choosing today am I.

Hoffs, hubbs likes to 'collect' unusual names in a note book and then uses them when writing his stories. Best one to date has to be Crawford Gilcrist, who was a chap we used to work with at the Inland Revenue.

Im not a golfer and neither is hubbs, but cherub seems to hold a liking for the stick n ball following a 'golf day trip' from school to the local putting plot.

Im a propper sucker for musicals it has to be said, and will happily go to see ANYTHING. The one ive seen the most is Phantom. Has anyone seen the film trailer for Le Mis? looks astounding and made me blub like a fool, so heaven know what I will be like when I acutually go see it. This musical is owner of my fav song 'On my own' ('little fall of rain' comes v close 2nd), I silently sobbed so much I could bearly see the stage when it was on in Manchester in the early 90's.

    Anywho, cup of tea anyone??

I have seen 'Chess' - some years ago in Cambridge. None of the original cast were in it, in fact I can't remember any 'known' names being in it. It was excellent all the same. The score was written by the guys from Abba, if I remember rightly?

I love 'I dreamed a dream' from Les Mis (or 'The Glums' as my choir's conductor calls it!) That key change gets me every time... And 'Castle on a cloud' brings a lump to my throat too.

I'm a sucker for a good musical, I haven't seen as many on stage as I'd like too, but I try and get to see show when I can. I've just booked tickets to see 'The Rise and Fall of Little Voice' at the Sheffield Lyceum in November. We saw 'Dreamboats And Petticoats' there earlier this year, and really enjoyed that. I'd like to see Matilda in the West End, if I get the chance, but I've been eyeing up tickets for The Audience with Helen Mirren (not a musical!)

My favourite musical film is probably Singin' In The Rain, with the great Gene Kelly, and Donald O' Conner's tour de force in 'Make 'Em Laugh'.

Now listening to Ruthie Henshall's version of 'I Dreamed A Dream'...

It's been a while since we have had one of these. I think that this may be a unique occasion, whereby the recipient is a first timer. However, for Craigybaby, starting with a flourish...

#65... Zoe, pleased to see another Musicals fan! Like you, I also love Colm Wilkinson's voice in Bring Him Home and I first saw Michael Ball when he was a young Marius singing Empty Chairs At Empty Tables and it's my favourite version of th song and he's my favourite Marius! https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8180/8029800131_b78d217218_m.jpg

I've seen the touring version of Dreamboats and Petticoats, twice as I love 60s' songs but not seen the other shows you mentioned. I've seen great reviews about Matilda and Little Voice and it would be good if you manage to get tickets to see the lovely Helen Mirren.

How about #3 - amyscarlett suggested The Birdie song at 9.12 this morning, so I think she deserves a hat too!

Well done Autumn Gale and Stilton John for Sultans of Swing mench. I was rather fond of this song when at primary school and even named my fluffy orange pencil case 'Harry' in its honnor. Just to clarify for Simon, I was in Junior 3 at the time. Yes I get muddled with the new syle of class numbering and regulaly have to work it out in my head. Cherub currently in what would have been Junior 4.

    They wear small shoes!

  • Comment number 74.

How great did Shona sound!! Sitting here grinning. Well done indeed.

Good to hear John's new name getting an outing and well done to Autumn_Gale too - great song.

Think it was Billie not Zoe that should have got the mention for Baggy Trousers.

  • Comment number 75.

I didn't hear Baggy Trousers it was maybe played when I was on the phone... but well done to Zoe... 'tis indeed a good evening for Blogpoppets!

  • Comment number 78.

Between Billie on the bog and talk of small feet I am giggling way too much tonight.

  • Comment number 79.

Does one blog from the bog?

    Hee :)

  • Comment number 80.

No Sal I don't but I do have a vague recollection of one of Simon's Telegraph pieces where he talked about tweeting on the toilet.

  • Comment number 81.

Guess you have to go with the flow Amelia!! :O

  • Comment number 82.

YES, Shona was clear as a bell! ;^)

Autumn Gale and Stilton John for loosely Ryder Cup. Good one.

Fly Like An Eagle.... Billie on the Bog and me... BECHOD!!

  • Comment number 84.

Missed Billie's mensh - well done!

Florence, I realised I didn't answer your earlier question about Deacon Blue. Yes, I am going to see them with the lovely Mo, and yes, they are also on in Cambridge. Mr B thinks I am mad... but Mo and I get to have a mini blog meet too.

Does anyone think this Muse song sounds a bit like Queen?

    ~X~

  • Comment number 85.

Well again a great night for the blog! I heard most of the show from the car and was giggling as I gave my 3 worder from Morrison's car park! Thank you Joe from radio 2 for phoning me and giving amateur dramatics lessons on how to say my 3 worder!

Well done Zoe, Autumn_Gale, JBG and Billie too for their menshes and good song choices.

Won't see you for an ARFO tomorrow but happy to pass as I've had my fair share of Drive Time this week. Thank you Simon!!

  • Comment number 86.

Just listened again Shona.... did you? (pass them off as your own? )

  • Comment number 87.

Well done everyone for the mensches tonight and Shona - you have a voice!!

    See you tomorrow

  • Comment number 88.

Shona, what was your talking text?

I caught 'success' but not your first two words!

  • Comment number 89.

Got it now, thanks Sal... I hadn't seen the written words this morning (#36) and hadn't realised Shona had put tea and party together!

  • Comment number 90.

#86 Hosyess with the mostess but could not possibly have passed anything off as my own! What a spread!

#88 Flo, it must be the Dundee dialect (woops, I hope not) Teaparty Huge Success!! All for a lovely colleague leaving to a better place.

*whistles tune of The Great Escape*

  • Comment number 91.

    #90 I may be a hosyess but I did mean hostess ;)

  • Comment number 92.

    Flo's a West Country Lass.

I hope they understand you up there Flo? ;)

  • Comment number 93.

    Evening All;

By 'eck! I seem to have received an erroneous mensh for Baggy Trousers, I actually suggested I Get Around by The Beach Boys, and didn't get a mensh for that, so I suppose it all balances out in the end. Simon must have had his list a*** about face! But thanks anyway. :D

Thanks for the mensh congrats & well done also to Autumn Gale, John & Billie (on the bog!) LOL. And well done Shona for the talking text 3 worder 'Teaparty Huge Success' :-)

#67 Florence - Michael Ball looks very fresh faced there! I love his rendition of 'Empty Chairs At Empty Tables' wish I could have seen him perform it on stage.

#73 John - LOL! I must say I never even noticed Simon's small feet when I met him, he is very svelte though, so perhaps nature decided he didn't need so much anchoring! ;D

    Goodnight one and all x

  • Comment number 94.

Is the blog being a pain?

  • Comment number 95.

Yes, it let me post the above but really doesn't like this one ...

Shona sounded exactly as she does in real life.

Like Zoe I haven't notice Lord A having especially small feet, his hands appear to be normal sized.

Deebee - I don't really like Muse so was not entirely paying attention.

I am feeling more and more sympathy for Mandy's post from earlier in the week. I've spent all day trying to explain that if 2+2 = 5 something has gone wrong and no I can't just fudge it to make it work.
