Curtain up (again)
School run completed, assorted children safely dropped. Main topics of conversation; USBs, Taylor Swift, last night's football, the quality of one school over another and uniforms in general. All with Radio 1 on.
Then the turnaround and it is just me and some CE on the radio to ease the journey home again. Now we can begin...
Enjoyed having John Major on yesterday. I had forgotten about the security aspect of these conversations but while Matt was performing his sports bulletin I was aware of the toilets (conveniently just through the glass door behind the studio) receiving a visit from imposing figures in suits.
Normally this means management are with us but this time it was just what has to be done when very important political folk come by. I hadn't met Sir John before but can vouch for the fact that he has a powerful handshake and is taller and broader than you might imagine. There was a lot of listener warmth towards him and he seemed genuinely pleased. No other senior politician I know has a story like John Majors and I thought he told it with warmth and compassion.
Today we move from Music Hall to the musical. Ruthie Henshall is a big name on these boards, starring as Roxie in Chicago, Nancy in Oliver and Grizabella in Cats. She's done Broadway as well as the West End so is perfectly placed to be writing 'So You Want To Be In Musicals?'. I've never thought of myself as a musicals fan but then remembered all the ones I had seen: Evita, Chess, 42nd Street, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Joseph, Jesus Christ Superstar and Dr Doolittle (though left at half-time, so maybe that doesn't count). Better than expected really. We'll talk more with Ruthie Henshall after 6.
And oldies please for TRAFFIC WARDENS who turned up for the first time in London on this day in 1960. Where would we be without them? Serenade them now!
Have a jolly and sure-footed Wednesday, see you after 5

Although I love the stage productions, and have seen many and varied over the years - including Gary Wilmot in 'Copacabana'(!) my real love is the films of the 30s-60s: Lerner & Lowe particularly of the later period and the Gershwins as interpretted by Fred & Ginger from the earlier. I had an absolutely fantastic day yesterday, and although I was a bit apprehensive about finally meeting my on-line friend from Holland (because you just never know if you'll hit it off with someone face to face, even after chatting on-line for years) Thankfully we got on like the proverbial house on fire, and as she speaks perfect English, I wasn't shown up by my lack of Dutch speaking. We didn't have all that much time together, but we managed to see the Shakespeare exhibition at the British museum, which was very interesting, and we both reminisced about the various productions of Shakespeare plays that we have seen (Dutch productions sound very interesting, including a production of Macbeth done with the actors dressed in Punch and Judy fashion, and with all their movements done puppet style) We also had a walk around Covent garden, and had a meal there before I had to leave to catch my train. She is staying in London for a few days to watch a few plays/musicals.
It's coincidental that blog chat is of musicals, and I'm a big fan, but my Dutch friend and I originally 'met' on-line on a Digital Spy forum, on a thread supporting (the eventual winner of the talent search for a Joseph - Any Dream Will Do) Lee Mead. We then joined a fan forum, and both went to see the musical when it was on at the Adelphi theatre, although not at the same time. We have both drifted away from that fandom over the years, but we both still have a shared love of musicals and stage play productions. We were hoping to see Sweeney Todd together (she's seeing it today) but I couldn't stay for it in the end, because of the twins being off school today *Curses* Anyway, now that we've finally met in person and got on so well, we hope we can meet up again at some point in the future.
On a quick side note, I love to hear about the cultural differences in other countries, and we got talking about traditional sweets (of all things!) I explained that we have many different kinds of boiled sweets like Simon's favourite sherbet lemons etc, and she was telling me of the Dutch love for licorice, or more specifically salty licorice called Salmiak. I tried a Dutch version of Fisherman's Friends which was Salmiak flavoured, it was an 'interesting' taste, that's for sure!
I would say, that of course you always need to be cautious when meeting people you've met on-line, but so far I've had only lovely experiences of meeting blogpoppets, and other folks that I've met on-line through fan forums.
I haven't had the chance to listen again to last night's DT, maybe tomorrow, if I get time. I'm mostly allergic to Tories, but I always thought that John Major was amongst the best of a bad lot!
Oh, and finally... Autumn Gale - Gigi is one of my favourite musicals too, along with Singin' In The Rain and Les Miserables. :-)

Not sure about John Major as a politician but I did enjoy the interview last night. He seemed very knowledgeable about his subject and spoke more warmly than I would have imagined. I wonder what it was like growing up with a dad who was so much older - 65 years old when JM was born - and so poorly too.
Blogger Zo - what a lovely day you had and much deserved. Hope your day isn't too bad.
I don't mind musicals and thoroughly enjoyed a local youth theatre's production of Les Mis a couple of years ago. However, I much prefer a good play and, living in the sticks, have loved seeing NT Live productions that are broadcast in cinemas. One Man, Two Guvnors with James Corden was excellent. A colleague and I are to be in the big smoke soon for a training course and after the course we're planning a trip to the theatre; not sure what we'll see yet but I'd love to see War Horse.
Anyhoo, grindstone can't be left for too long so better get back to it.

Not posted much lately but I did last week regarding my Mum. Well mum passed away on Friday and myself and the family are obviously still coming to terms with our loss. Bit traumatic this week as the coroner wanted to open an enquiry a kind of mini inquest. That is happening tomorrow at 9.30am and hopefully will not take long. Trying to get on with stuff but obviously some days are better than others!
Tune for today has to be The Beatles with Lovely Rita.

I have also met him twice and found him to be a really nice, friendly, warm person, exactly how Colin Firth was when he was here for 12 days filming 'The Railway Man' and Colin was so nice with all the locals and seemed to like giving hugs too! ;o)
Talking of Colin Firth, he was in the Mama Mia film and I agree with Deebee, it was better on the stage but I like to watch the 'feelgood' film occasionally!
Here's John Owen-Jones singing 'Bring Him Home' as himself, but obviously there is more emotion when he's actually in Les Mis playing Valjean!

#56 I couldn't think who RBS was and kept re reading your post to try and make sense of it. Then suddenly realised I was RBS. What a plonker!
Didn't hear too much of the show due to late finish and life things but I did hear Flo under her Sunday name getting a text read out. And I smiled. Mr W thought I had other things on my mind ~}
Won't see you at all tomorrow - off to a big field called Glasgow all day.

Flo - assuming we are allowed to mention Sunday names, nice email!
Shona, my dear, hope you has a good evening!!
As for meeting folk for online. I was terrified / mortified / embarrassed when I first did it 7 years ago. It has always been positive for me (well except for Shona obviously*). Not kept in touch with everyone but some folk have become really good friends.
*joking just in case anyone was wondering, Shona is lovely & mostly harmless & giggles as well as I do. Deebee on the other hand I am terrified of meeting
