Busy, so no song suggestions. Must confess my mind also started wondering what gifts were being bared, or whether Simon simply had them all so well trained that the gift-bringers all take the wrapping off for him :-)



Just to add - the Union Chapel. What a great venue! Can't think why I haven't been before. You know it's a good venue when someone steps away from the mic and you can still hear them singing perfectly well. I imagine it's a tad chilly in the winter though, and keeping guitars in tune must be a bit of a nightmare. And take a nicely padded coat to sit one - pews aren't really designed to be sat on for gig-length periods. But other than that, loved it.

Simon talking about his debut on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show got me thinking about what I was doing then. I was working in HR for a (now defunct) computer company with the initials of the first three letters of the last month of the year (look it up!), and I had about a 40 minute commute to work up the then A45, subsequently renamed the A14. I don't specifically remember Simon's first show but he regularly accompanied me on my journey to work. I'd arrive at about 8.45 which was when the 'Confessions' slot was on, and I'd sit in the car park listening to it... and looking around me I would spot several colleagues in their cars doing the same... Ah, memories...

Simon, I liked reading that one r'n'r element (of the weekend), was shooting the breeze with Bono and Edge about this and that. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall. Perhaps many of us remember when the dj actually put the vinyl records on off the turntable and the stuck needle moment. Cha-chinka, cha-chinka, cha-chinka...ruupt! Meatless Monday for us so a little pasta, garlic bread -- "high carbs abound", said my gleeful thighs. Just in from the gym and I'm getting closer to getting my left arm fully raised - goody. I find it best when this old body has a full range of movement. Something I took for granted in the past.

I quickly stopped listening to that said station when a T Shirt I won, never arrived. Perhaps it's with Paul's mug?

Keep going LilacBlue - little by little, slowly, slowly you will improve. Easy to say, I know but meant with very best wishes.



I do my mile on the exercise bike to help keep my legs moving and it would be very easy to skip a day here and there, but the only person I'm cheating on is myself - so I do it and usually feel ok with it afterwards.

I don’t always have a chance to read the book club book but I was home alone yesterday and the sun was shining so an afternoon in the garden reading seemed a much better plan than the work I should have caught up with.



Possible Lives is a series of 5 novellas; they were long enough not to be short stories. There are loose connections and themes between the stories but they all initially seemingly stand alone.



There is a fantastic line about “the fearful joy of communion” and I guess that is the theme that runs through the five stories; the impact our choices make on us and those around us; how communicating can be frankly terrifying but it is what connects us.



I raced through it yesterday and need to read it again to make more sense of the connections running across the stories. Cheeseman reappearing at the end did my make smile.



I’ve always enjoyed Sebastian Faulks ; he is a great story teller. The five story here spam from the early 19th century to the near future via Victorian workhouses, the second world war and 70s America.



Ultimately it is quite a melancholic (and in places harrowing) book about possible lives not lived because of choices make. The idea we wouldn’t make the same “mistakes” the second time around and how our atoms are recycled. What we might have been if we made difference choices. I certainly waste too much time thinking “what if I had got on that bus 20 years ago” etc.



I loved it; one of the best books I have read this year.

Decisions, decisions – Mumford & Sons playing in Belfast but it is an arena, which I hate. I love them, have never seen them, cant decide. I really hate arena shows.

#65 Thanks for the review Amela, it sounds like an interesting read. Yes, it's all too easy to play the "what if" game... but then if we made different choices in life that doesn't necessarily mean we wouldn't have made mistakes - they might just have been different mistakes. One of my favourite films is 'Sliding Doors' - if you haven't seen it, it is two parallel stories - in one the girl catches the train and in the other she just misses it. And her life takes quite different paths following on from that point.



On the subject of the Book Club, has anyone else applied to be a reader reviewer? I applied back when it first started but I've never been chosen. It has occured to me that maybe we 'regular bloggers' are excluded from the Book Club because we get so involved in choosing the oldies... Just a thought.

Deebee - I applied right at the start too (long before I posted here) and have never been chosen. The book panel was one of my favourite bits of Simon's 5 Live show and I'm glad we still have book reviews on drive time.

#67 Amelia - true about the jams and it's just in the hedgerows for free! Mr Aquaplane bought me a sugar thermometer and was very precise with his measureing (being a scientist - he can do science things) so an excellent batch was produced. I can fully recommend the use of jam-making sugar with added pectin.



I noticed on my lovely walk up to the Swedish Bridge above Ambleside on Saturday that there were loads of berries still not ripe yet. Plenty more to come.

Ameila, wonderful review and well, I'm buying the book. The theme of communication binding us and it being terrifying, can be likened to posting on a large public blog. Something that many of us can relate to. Thank you for your support.

Deebee - you are aware of my "being at the front" obsession! They just seem too intimate a band for a huge venue.



Lady_S – very few ripe ones with us at the moment. The ones I pick usually get eaten before I get the chance to make jam but I really must try. Mum always said bramble was one of the easiest to make.



Lilac Blue – thank you! Of course you are right. I remember the first time I posted on a forum (about 10 years ago now) I sat with my finger on the post button for ages, too terrified to actually press it.

Amelia, I think you should go to see Mumford and Sons. If you don't, it could end up being a "what if........." story.

#67 - I try to be wise but I think it is mostly common sense - and something I feel quite strongly about, is that people should take responsibility for their actions and not expect things to be done for them with no effort on their own part. If they do nothing, they should expect nothing in return.



I hate selfishness as well. There was a letter in last week's local rag about a couple who had made an appointment to have their baby's hand and foot prints taken in the hospital plastering room (didn't realise you could do that!!). Because of various emergencies which took precedence, they had to wait three quarters of an hour and walked out as it was a 'dreadful service' - I couldn't believe that anyone could be so selfish. If it was so important that they had plaster casts of their little treasure's hands and feet, why didn't they go to the local craft shop and buy a bag of plaster and do it themselves?



What planet are they on? Is it me??

In regards to lightweight high energy food. We use Datrex onboard cruise ships for emergency rations. Containing 2400kcal(10,00kj0) for every 500g.

Although I wouldn't replace them with your crunchy Nut just yet, as the taste isnt all there, they are Dried food but have been developed so not to make you de-hydrate. With a shelf life of 5 years they should be alright for most journeys, haha.

#32 Andy - that WAS a coincidence! I like coincidences! It's an exciting piece to play on the KB. What do you play in your Swing Band?

I missed the first half-hour of the show as I've been out longer than I intended with my (naughty) dogs who sniffed out five little Muntjac deer from their hiding place and the deer took off, leaping across the wheat stubble, followed by my dogs who hadn't any chance whatsoever of getting near them but kept following their scent until they reached the place where they had leapt over a high hedge and then gave up!



So pleased to know one of my tunes was played and well done to PonyClubMum, Jennie and also JBG who must be over the moon to have Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves played!!! :o))

For the homework sucks question about taking food to the Antarctic, I wonder if they can take frozen fish fingers and peas in their rucksacks, and just defrost them when they need them? ;)
