So follow me follow

Simon Mayo|08:12 UK time, Tuesday, 28 August 2012

Well here we are again and thanks to young Elton for sitting in for me. A great selection of songs too-he's welcome back anytime (bank holidays and weekends preferably). If you had one, I hope your bank holiday was a good one. I was at the Greenbelt festival on the Cheltenham Racecourse which was graced by the likes of The Proclaimers, Bellowhead, Seth Lakeman, Frank Skinner and Robin Ince. And mud. Mainly mud. Spectacular lakes of the stuff which spread as far as the eye could see. If you didn't have wellies or staff to carry you on your sedan chair, you had no chance. This was all due to a spectacular few hours of torrential and at times horizontal rain and hail. There I was innocently signing books in a large marquee when the heavens opened and a river ran under my table in an instant. Elsewhere a friend reported the rain was so fierce as it hit the side of the tent that it vaporised and turned to spray. This was a storm alright.

Anyway we now have enough washing to last a lifetime and half a Cheltenham field caked into its folds and creases. I need to tart myself up bigtime for today's show or I'll not meet the R2 code of style and cleanliness introduced by Ken Bruce a few years back. We have standards you know. I fancy some crisp linen but might have to settle for an old Nashville t-shirt instead.

Today we talk poetry with Roger McGough 'the patron saint of poetry' according to Carol Ann Duffy. Roger has been in our lives since The Scaffold and Lily The Pink days but it has been with his poems that he has been making a name for himself for decades and his latest collection is 'As Far As I Know'. Roger from 6 and your songs please on the subject of WILD ANIMALS ON THE LOOSE EVEN IF THERE AREN'T ANY AFTER ALL. You can do LIONS if you wish of course but I thought I's spread the net wider.

Have an encouraging and efficient Tuesday, see you at 5.

    Mornin all,

hope we all had a good (extended) weekend, I had a pretty quiet one trying to ease backache so that it doesn't impact on my upcoming week's annual leave (due to start next Monday).

Anyway on to today's theme, and I'd like to propose the following:

    MONSTER - AUTOMATIC

Cheery-bye everyone, have a cracking day.

Morning all. It seems that Simon posts a new blog every day just as I'm sitting down at work, hence the reason my posts are so early these days!

Anyway I can remember the Bank Holiday trips out to Formby Point, Parsley and the cheeky red squirrels.

What’s with all the Duran Duran misspellings! My sister was obsessed with them; I spent half my teenage years “listening” to them through the wall.

I now have an annoying medley of Lion Sleeps Tonight / Hoots Mon / Monster competing with Shelagh Fogarty in my head.

Billie - from the previous blog I agree, I did very little on Sunday and felt rotten in the evening. Busy day on Saturday I was full of beans.

Interesting piece on procrastination on Today, yesterday. I do suffer from it but not as much as the woman being interviewed who appeared to do nothing but procrastinate (being fined £20 a day for not filing my tax return might be enough motivation to do something!)

Anyway, must just go beck my emails …

Flanders and Swann - formed the soundtrack to my childhood, along with The Goons and Gilbert & Sullivan and Beethoven and Schubert and 50/60s musicals and Tom Lehrer etc etc ..

My parents had a one of those radiogramme thingies which looked a bit like a sideboard. Teak. If the BBC home/World Service wasn't on - they played records ALL THE TIME - even, actually - expecially, after we four children had gone to bed ... I fell asleep listening to it.

Which explains how I know every word of 'Drop Of A/Another Hat ' and 'Kismet' and 'Guys and Dolls' ... it would seem that the comedy and the tunes and the symphonies and concertos and the musicals are now hard-wired into my consciousness ...

    No complaints.

Evening all - Parsley_Cat back from a weekend visit to Essex just to get the locals worried about big cat invasions. Time for some Whiskas and a snooze (other tinned feline nourishment also available).

#53 - Lady_S - you certainly bring a better standard of nonsense back to the blog. You've been missed.

The Cheltenham gathering must have been one of the few survivors of the weekend. Even the Mathew St festival in Liverpool succumbed. I'd have expected a better standard of resilience from the North West, but perhaps they were making allowances for those from less damp parts of the country.

    #68 Hi Katy... *waves frantically*

I am fine, not on holiday but have had sis/bro-in-law staying, also working in between and like some blogpoppets do from time to time, took a few days off from blogging... I thought about you last week when I saw the lovely Dougie Maclean...

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9tZyH0fLuc

and as Dougie and I have a mutual friend, who was with me, we had a drink with him after the show and he's such a warm, friendly guy. He had just come back from doing a festival and other gigs in America when we saw him and it seemed he'd brought a lot of them back with him as we were surrounded by Americans, who seem to love him.... they were probably here for the Edinburgh Festival, which is what his gig was part of.

#70 Hello Parsley and thank you for the compliment.

I just don't think even hardened festival goers from the East and South of the country have ever experienced driving Westerly rain barrelling through the 'Cheshire Gap' which it then dumps before rising over the Pennines (all done in her best Ian McCaskill voice).

Whilst Stray cat strut was on - Mr Scruff from next door was rolling all over my drive expecting me to throw fresh mince at him to make him go away.

I've been busy with appointments so I missed preshow chat and choon chase. I liked the self-publishing interview (I've forgotten his name). Roger McGough was an easy, interesting listen as well.

    Bonsoir,

#50 Amelia - Thank you, it's not that bad really, I was just having multiple harassments this morning, and I don't like wishing the days away. I will be glad for all of us to get the old routine back though, my boys are the opposite to most other kids, in that they hate school holidays.

#60 Jennie Wren - Thank you for adding my medal guess to the list. :-)

Well done to everyone who got a mensh this evening. :-)

    Bedtime...

    Goodnight one and all x

#76 Katy Blogvet.....I'm sorry to disappoint, but you are correct....that is me

My profile doesn't make me a bad person, I am a professional and always carry out my duties to the very best of my abilities and always act in a responsible manner.......I hope you will find it in your heart to let me continue blogging on here

    A very sad JT69

    #82 - my pleasure, Zoe

Good morning one and all - bright and warm but rain is forecast later - wait and see.

Has anyone found the list of music played on each 'episode' yet? It is a pain not having it when trying to track down a choon played. Mr Allinson still has one on his iThingy page. Can you not have a word with the Techies Simon? Please?

Don't be sad JT69 - as long as you behave yourself on here, you will be welcome - if you misbehave, there is always the naughty step...............

    Good morning early birds.

    Much nicer day here too.

Another step closer to coming home. Waiting for a man to collect my bags for shipment.

    Back later x

  • Comment number 87.

#85 Jennie Wren, thank you for your support and comments. I have no desire to misbehave or be on the "naughty step", I will leave that for the regulary peeps that don't behave and lower the standard to an unaccepatable smutty level.....

No names no pack drill etc.

When do you actually land back on British soil for good, Mo? Will you be off again or are you staying with us for a while? We should get the bunting out, I feel!

    Good morning ALL

May I please suggest you do not judge a book by it's cover.

Hope this day is good to you all and the sun is shining above you :0)

Hi Jennie, land at approx 5.20pm on Friday :-) No plans to leave again (other than for my holiday on 16th Sept) but wouldn't rule out saying yes to another expat role should something attractive turn up.

Good advice, JT. Unfortunately the sun isn't shining anymore. I only moved 5 miles and it's chucking it down.
