Simon Mayo|08:10 UK time, Thursday, 16 August 2012

Up early, heart pounding. I will say no more.

Here's to a fine day, looking set for a sunny one here on the estate (and we appear to be fox-free at the moment, so praise be). Really enjoyed yesterday's show and Eddie M was on fine form I thought; thoughtful, open and profound. He was wearing some natty yellow trousers too which takes a certain panache and je ne sais quoi (which looks really stupid written down). There is, in my opinion, no such thing as a bad Eddie Marsan film.

As I wrote that paragraph, the ping from the inbox signified the arrival of child 2's A level results. What a terrifying sound. Normally so innocuous, you would normally pay it no heed but today? Oh boy. I remember my dad chucking an envelope at me in my tent as we camped somewhere (Cornwall probably) and the heart pounding in EXACTLY the same way. In those far off days, my 2 B's and a C was considered pretty good and fine enough anyway for Warwick. It would be unwise to blog about child 2's results as 1) she hasn't said I could and 2) Grandmas don't know yet. Etiquette matters.

We move on.

Nige is back with a tasty chocolate tart for you (well me really) and oldies please on the subject of CHEATING. The world of Scrabble has been shocked to its core by the revelations of cheating in the US National Scrabble Championships. One of its young players was caught with 2 blank tiles under his shoe and has been expelled. Songs for the cheats please!

Have a sunny and coherent Thursday, see you after 5

Julia, I like Maureen Lipman, she's funny and I can remember her talking about her 'ology'. I'm guessing that Simon's 'gulp' was because he underestimated just how well his daughter would do in her exams!

Good morning Simon, team and fellow blogsters,

I am pleased that your estate is fox free at the moment, Simon. Long may it continue.

Why does the fear of exam results still haunt us many years later? I still have a dream where I am sitting an exam that I haven't revised for. Not sure what that is all about! I am sure that she has done well, and you have an excuse for a cheeky creme de menthe (or at least a sherbet lemon)!

Off to have a think about suitable oldie tunes.

#41 Mandy - A retweet is when you either copy and paste what another tweeter has said, with the letters RT in front to indicate a manual retweet, or you use the retweet button to pass that tweet on to your followers, as it will appear on your timeline.

A reply, is when you press the reply button and the person you wish to reply to will come up in the box, i.e @their name, you then add your reply, and send.

    Afternoon all,

a brief swoop in from me, just to say all the best to all kids and

parents/crinklies/crumplies waiting for the 'ology' results..

Hope it all goes according to plan (or better than?) and the blank chequebook that is now a University education is once more opened up in the Mayo household.

Careful family planning waaay back ideally means that only one Uni funding should be required in any academic year. Poor planning means a year, or even more in our case (but not our fault, my step-son had a change of course after year #1 and had to start back at year #1 on his new course which was then a 4 YEAR course = 5 years of funding!!) of crossover funding.

Mr e said he would buy me a new car when the kids finally left Uni, at this rate the joke is that it'll be one of those mobility scooters, we will be sooo OLD!

I tweeted some choons, including the popular LYING EYES and the Police's 'SOMEBODY'S WATCHING ME'

Not at work tomorrow and a girlie lunch planned, so good luck tonight with the menshes and tomorrow with the ARFO!

We had chocolate and beetroot cake, a Tanya Ramsay receipie - and I'm counting it as one of my five a day, so there.

Yesterday's BBC 2 b'fast show motto was 'you know you're getting older when...' (or was it Tues, can't rememer!) - my end line today is '....when your drinks after work night out is cancelled and you are relieved!'

Bingo, I hope you are wearing a hard hat! ;-)

Mr madchick bought a 'handmade' racing bike recently. The last one was stolen from our shed. I nearly fainted when he told me how much he had paid for it. (It would buy a few bags of beetroot, I'm sure!). It is currently standing in the utility room until the new garage has been built. Another ornament to dust...

Golly, almost a whole hour without a post?

Cant be having that, can we!

  • Comment number 84.

#83 - Sal - it can only be that the Bingo Star has said it all for everyone concerned. It's a hard act to follow.

#73 - Suzieeeeeee (hope that's enough e's) - ah the wonders of the English language. How does anyone from abroad ever learn it ?

  • Comment number 85.

Has anyone heard from Harry since he went to THAT London ? Has he survived to tell the tale ?

  • Comment number 86.

#85 ParsleyC - yes I've heard. he survived but think he's a bit busy.

I definitely subscribe to what may be the prevailing opinion - it really seems strange in here without his inimitable brand of bloggetry.

Come back soon Harry. I've even used some big words to tempt you x

I'm still trying to decipher Bingo's messages!!!

Three word Thursday.... 'far too hot!'

  • Comment number 88.

I'm off out for a quick one - friend going on holiday. Any excuse.

#87 - Florence - far too much like hard work. Got to give him credit for all the effort that goes into the postings even if they are completely indeciferable to the rest of us.

  • Comment number 90.

#89 Parsley Cat, I'm sure I read somewhere a while back that to be able to understand what Bingo says, we have to read his messages in a Liverpool accent!!

Well done to the ladies tonight, Amelia, Jennie and Deebee who I heard getting a menshe. Apologies if there were others, I must have been walking the dogs and missed.

I need to go and see why Wee Jimmy is crying...............................

  • Comment number 92.

Blimey, it's quiet here this evening... has everybody got a *waggles index and middle fingers to indicate quotes* friend going on holiday...?

    ;o)

Welldones to Amelia for "Don't believe a word" and Jennie Wren and me for "Lying Eyes". I didn't hear the second and third oldies as I was promenading the pooch - anyone know what they were?

Right, I think it's time to go and open a bottle of something. Well it is practically the weekend...

    :o)

  • Comment number 93.

    Well I'm back home now.

Just to prove that I really CAN manage an 'early doors' without the termptation of staying longer. There's some stunning Ralph Vaughan Williams music on BBC4 at the moment - I could get quite tearful ... but I shan't.

    :^)

    There's a hat awaiting the #100 - *sings* ♫come on you bloggers!

  • Comment number 97.

Well I am back home now and listening to some very beautiful Ralph Vaughan Williams on BBC4

    *serene face*

    :^)

  • Comment number 98.

Problem with blog telling me all sorts of porkies - like 'We have difficulty posting your ... etc etc' resulted in my double post. How odd it looks!

Just thought I'd mention that 'termptation' in post #96 is a typo.

    :^)

  • Comment number 99.

    Who will get the hat?

  • Comment number 100.

Would be rude not to try!!

    Have great evenings all.
