Calm before the storm
Well here we all are again. Wednesday it is and another fine show on the way (though you'll obviously be the judge of that). Today should be a calm day. Tomorrow is A level results day and won't be. But today, ignorance is bliss. No point in worrying, can't change it now, just wait and see etc. AS was bad enough last year but that is just a trial run for tomorrow. I remember mine, you may well remember yours and it all seems like the most important thing in the world (which it is but don't mention that too loudly). For parents it is a particularly exquisite torture as we look on with a number of wise statements to hand but none that seem appropriate. Providing balance and perspective will be useful in time of course but it might have to wait. You have champagne in the fridge for a celebration and tissues on hand if it all goes, shall we say, rather disappointingly. So tomorrow's blog will not contain musings of this nature as everything will be a tad too frantic.
Today we welcome the wonderful Eddie Marsen to Drivetime. Eddie is always brilliant whether as the manic driving instructor in Happy Go Lucky, a dwarf in Snow White and the Huntsman or Inspector Lestade in Sherlock Holmes. On Thursday he stars with Rob Brydon in The Best Of Men on BBC1. It is the true story of Dr Ludwig Guttman the inspirational doctor and neurologist who essentially created the Paralympic Games. Until Guttmann arrived, paralysis was considered terminal but he used sport to build strength and self respect. It is a wonderful piece of TV and also stars Rob Brydon as a paralysed Welsh soldier. Eddie will explain more from 6.
And oldies please for RAIL COMMUTERS. Price rises of up to 20% over the next 3 years on trains that are already amongst the most expensive in the world mean glum faces on the 7.35 this morning. And every morning. Cheer them up with a well chosen tune!
And then we'll see you after 5.

On the subject of birds, we saw some interesting ones while we were on the boat. Plenty of gannets - how do they know exactly when to divebomb into the water? They can't possibly see the fish... We also saw some little petrels, flying along just above the surface of the sea - they are supposed to be unlucky for sailors, but only when near to land as it means there's going to be a storm. We also saw cormorants, a guillemot and (we think) a shearwater. And plenty of seagulls!

It's crazy how much we stress over exams and results, yes, they can be make or break, but you can always resit if needs be, not ideal, but not the end of the world either. Exam results are merely a stepping stone to University etc, which in turn is a stepping stone to a career. But it takes more than a piece of paper to make someone into the person they will become. I did well in all my exams, GCSEs and A-Levels, and they ended up not counting for much at all really, maybe my fault, or just the cards life dealt me.

I looked up train fares to London last night, and I have to say that they're expensive enough, in my opinion. And, as for tomorrow, be it tissues or champers, neither situation is the end of the road, just another step along the way. We all have to retrace our steps sometimes, and we all have to sit and bask at other times. Whatever happens, it's really just another lesson. It's what you take from these various situations, win or lose, and what you do with what you take that counts. Lifes rich tapestry, and all that.

#79 The last year of 'O' levels was 1987 - as I took mine that year, similar to some on here! I remember us all looking at the GCSE maths papers with disdain at how easy they seemed compared to our 'proper' exam! (not much changes in those terms)
As someone who bombed completely in my A levels - due to not enough work, too much sport and beer, I find this a strange time in my head, with lots of what if's, but I have seemed to bumble along nicely despite what seemed like the world's worst catastrophe at the time!
On to happier thoughts
Sheffield Blog meet - Oct 20th seems to be more or less fixed as the date, currently attending is me, Shona, Tortie, Harry, PSL, Gill with a G. Also I think Parsley Cat, Deebee and MTD and hopefully Zoe said they could do that date as well.
There is room for anyone else who like to come, with apologies to those for who Sheffield is too far to travel, but the more the merrier.
Cheers
A

Lady_Stormrider was keen to attend I believe when we originally mooted the idea, although I can't speak for her regarding that date. I know she is having problems contributing during the day at the moment. (If you are lurking, maybe you can let 'And its all over now' know if you can make that date - it would be good if you could get along).
On the O/A Level - I did rather well in mine and went on to graduate. Since then Ive had an OK rather than spectacular time, career-wise, so one shouldn't feel it's the beginning or end of all that is to come. It may help to do well at this stage, but it's up to the individual to make the rest happen - it doesn't come automatically.

I did Highers too, in 1988 (remember we do them a year earlier!). Results at beginning of August as CBzz said. Through the post rather than at school as seemed to be the case in England although I guess it is by text and email now? I remember standing holding onto the back of the sofa for support as I opened the envelope.

A levels seem the be-all-and-end-all at the time, but really aren't in the grand scheme of things, and there are alternatives to going to University. I did less well than hoped for in mine (and actually did a couple of resits) and ended up not going to Uni. I do regret that slightly, but I turned out okay - and I did get a degree later via the OU.
#80 I'm a 'possible/maybe' at the moment - I'm thinking of combining it with a few days in the Peak District, but I haven't mentioned it to Mr B yet. I'm waiting for him to recover from the rather expensive South coast marina mooring fees...

1977/78 were O Levels and Highers years for me - a distant memory! But done with little teenage enthusiasm at the time. Re did some Highers in the early 80's and never looked back since.
I'd best go as I have heaps to do to prepare for 100 fresh faced newbees tomorrow before heading out into the field later this afternoon.
Catch you later.

226.8 miles, not too bad, I used to do that many miles every day as a tooth fairy.

Most of the pics I put on here from time to time were taken with my 5-year old camera that goes in my pocket on dog walks, and cost about £100. Last night I was out with my dogs and used it and not my 'good' camera, that's a bit risky on dog walks, as my dogs are on their leads at times, and the Nikon is quite bulky, also I need two hands to use it but I can use my little camera one-handed, which is how these were taken.

As you probably already know (from my pics that probably bore most people), the Bass Rock, an island just off our coast, has about 160,000 of them on for most of the year and are spectacular to watch on a sial around the island.

Appropriate for both the journey on the train and the effect of them squeezing yet more coinage out of us.
