The Eagle has Landed

Simon Mayo|09:27 UK time, Tuesday, 26 June 2012

So the GP says I can go to work unless I'd rather not. I say I'd rather work thank you. No I haven't been travelling or met exotic animals or birds. A bug it is then. Drink water and take it easy (as The Eagles would say, more of them in a minute). So this is what I am doing. I would rather have a coffee but I'm told that won't help. Same for alcohol and fruit. Bland is the way forward, disappointingly. Thanks for the get well messages, hopefully no one noticed a thing on air. No emergency segues were needed, we kept calm and, well you know the rest.

Today we welcome (in an excited state) the arrival of Glenn Frey to the show. We play his wonderful Eagles tunes with great regularity and his solo stuff is still requested loads. Now he has an album of 14 standards out which take us through the song writing skills of Brian Wilson, Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington and Tony Bennett. He's dedicated it to his parents but the real impetus for the album was Clint Eastwood. He asked him to sing at a party and to try something from the 40's. It went down so well, it was just a matter of time before this album took shape. Glenn will sing tonight and an Eagles standard is promised too.

And oldies please on the theme of SPORTS DAY. 'Tis the season for parents to be rehearsing either their excuses or their sprinting skills, while the children take part in non-competitive, vaguely energetic 'activities'. Some schools did "World Sports Day' yesterday, others have all the fun still to come. Your top sports day tunes please.

Have a groovy and cool Tuesday, see you after 5

Morning all - hope you continue to feel better Mr M and the same to anyone else on the blog today who is feeling under the weather - sending virtual TLC from deepest darkest Wilts.

Its Day 2 in the Lurgy-Household. One patient despatched back to school this morning. One left lurking on the sofa. The sporty one who is never ill. Doc diagnosed 'hayfever-dehydration-headache-post-exam-knackeredness-and-general-pants-feeling' and prescribed lots of rest, fluid and general TLC. I think thats probably within the bounds of my nursing capabilities. Harry Potter DVD marathon postponed from yesterday will begin at 11am sharp if anyone wants to join us....

As for World Sports Day, that's on Friday for me. New school, so not sure if there's a parents race, but if so, the day would would go in song titles like this:

    I WON'T LET YOU DOWN - PHD

RUNNING TO STAND STILL - U2

FALLING OVER (MY FEET) - GUILLEMOTS

    EMBARRASSMENT - MADNESS

    and finally

TORTOISE REGRETS HARE - JAMES YORKSTON

OK, off to read back now and walk the dog before whipping up some nutritious fruit salad and settling on the sofa....

    BLUR - Girls and Boys

    CHRIS DIFFORD - Parents

    MADNESS - I'll Compete

    VAN MORRISON _ Sack O'Woe

    YELLO - The Race

For Mum or Dad when they take part in the parents race and make fools of themselves:

    MADNESS - Embarrassment

And for the egg and spoon race I won with the help of a tiny bit of chewing gum:

STATUS QUO - Break The Rules

LOST IN FRANCE - BONNIE TYLER

    ALL STOOD STILL - ULTRAVOX

  • Comment number 29.

Lots of fab choices when I read back just now, although thanks to Vildeen, my patient is now whistling 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down' having spotted the words 'Rolf Harris' on the screen. I suspect that will be today's ear worm.

#3 - Florence - definitely would second you on the 'keep drinking' advice, having had a bit of a lecture this morning from the doc about how long dehydration headaches can take to go. Pint glasses at the ready here - after all, its not like we are short of water at the moment is it - it would be rude not to.

    #8 - Phil - Fishermen's Friends - fab choice - we like that one!

#13 - Harry - can we share U2 please? Hopefully things will begin to 'speed up' for you soon x

#20 - Shona - you need to watch those bananas disguised as danish pastries - one is never enough....

  • Comment number 30.

    Good morning, again, everyone!

Mrs coffeeBuzz-to-be was supposed to be marshalling troops of primary school children through their sports day yesterday. Unfortunately nobody had planned any swimming events, so it was postponed until Thursday.

It's lovely and sunny today. Hopefully that will last until the new sports day! :)

School sports oldies (not read back, so apologies for unwittingly seconding):

TIE ME KANGAROO DOWN SPORT - ROLF HARRIS

OUR HOUSE - MADNESS (for the house-type shenanigans)

    JUMP - VAN-HALEN

    THE RACE - YELLO

SUNBURN - MUSE (my memory of a very hot sports day)

#29 Hoffs, it's not so much that things are slow; it's the eagerness of third-parties to take away my hard earned cash. I only took £34 in the shop yesterday (a whole days work for me); it cost me £35 for a 5 minute check-up at the dentist this morning. Mr Micawber's wise words spring to mind.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Glad you are feeling better Simon.

Back down to earth with a bump this morning. No reflection on Norwegian Air, obviously - one of the better 'budget' companies I have flown with (others are also available...) Back to work and a backlog of emails to catch up on. Who knew such a lot could happen in 2 days... :o(

I wasn't planning to play the choon chasing game today - thought there would be 100s of posts by now to be honest - but I would like to second ponyclubmum's suggestion of

RUNNING IN THE FAMILY by Level 42 (wah!)

    and also throw in

RUN TO ME by the Bee Gees

    ~X~

  • Comment number 34.

And another thing - we can't ignore this song:

    LET'S GET PHYSICAL - ONJ

Because lets face it, how many times have we seen the dads doing surreptitious stretching and limbering up whilst glancing furtively at the competition? I often think it would be better if the school just popped this song on the loudspeaker and invited all the fathers to limber up in sync. I am sure they would be more than happy to if there was an ONJ figure at the front spurring them on.....

I was chatting to a fellow shopkeeper, Brahim, whilst at the wholesalers today, and he told of one of his customers, who had the following conversation with him yesterday afternoon.

'Brahim, you must congratulate me. I became a Grandmother for the first time, early this morning'

'That is really lovely news, Mrs ????. Are mother and child both well?'

'I am going to see them now, but son-in-law says that they are fine.'

    'Boy or girl?

'We have a granddaughter, 7lb 6oz, and with a shock of black hair, apparently'

'And have they chosen a name for her, yet?'

'Err, yes, they have.' Slightly uncomfortable pause.....

Morning all !!! Glad your on the mend Simon, I recommend dry toast and boiled water sipped at regular intivals.

Cherub had her sports day yesterday afternoon. The children came out to the music 'Chariots of fire' waiving flags of the nations and carrying pretend olympic torches. It was lovely to see, and we were blessed with warm sunshine for the occasion.

She was in the relay race and the egg and spoon race, for which she had been practicing all weekend, wandering around the house with her desert spoon filled with various items. She battled valliently for last place, and in the end won that coverted spot. As for the relay race... Well, her shoe 'flew' off as she neared the line sending her tumbleing. No injurys aquired thankfully and she had a smile on her face throughout.

#29 Hoffs... re not drinking enough fluid/headaches.... a friend of mine hated having to use public/other loos if we were out shopping for several hours so consequently she wouldn't drink anything for the time we were out or before she left home and would always arrive home with a headache and she realised that was the only times she had headaches and realised that lack of drinking was the cause and unless she took tablets, her headache would take a long time to go.

I think water has other benefits too several years ago, our local schools (probably all schools) started to provide drinking water to allow the children to drink at their desks because it keeps them hydrated and helps them to concentrate and keep them alert.

I try to make sure I drink about five or six glasses of water every day and also drink four or five cups of tea and the occasional coffee and I don't get headaches.

#35 Thanks Paul, but distance-wise I'm actually closer to Rotherham (although address-wise I am also 'of Sheffield') The Olympic torch passed through Rotherham bright and early this morning, so really I should have passed the torch on to you :)

I hope ill blogpoppets, and our dear leader, are all feeling a bit better. I'm not feeling so sprightly myself today, just got a headache. I doubt it's dehydration related, because I drink loads of water, in fact I drink hardly anything else but water. I've never liked tea, and don't care for coffee either, and a few months ago I kicked all the energy drinks and all other caffeinated drinks, into touch. I feel so much better for giving up the caffeine, it wasn't doing me any favours. I was knocking back the energy drinks like nobody's business, in an effort to overcome my constant tiredness, but they were working against me (making me jittery, not sleeping, dehydrating me etc) I find drinking regular glasses of water to be far more effective at keeping me going (in all senses of the word!) :D

#129 from yesterday - he certainly said Shona Wallace but can't remember what choon was played - did you not send in a request?

Re Sports Day - when I was teaching, we used to have a split sports day - infants usual stuff - egg and spoon, sack race etc and the juniors did a round robin of activities and points were awarded to teams so one team won rather than individuals.

We used to have a fathers race too but it got quite dangerous with the speeds they ran at - some even went into training weeks before the race! So we made their race a novelty race of some description like running backwards - funny how many dads didn't want to join in then!

#61 Sorry to hear you are feeling unwell, and had to postpone your hospital appointment, Jennie Wren. Hope you get some answers, and treatment soon.

I didn't go to see the Olympic torch relay, but my local authority have posted some good pictures from this morning...

#61 Sorry to hear you're not well Jennie. Good for your Mr, looking after you!

#55 LOL! That made me chuckle. Puts me in mind of the first time I left the children solely in the care of Mr B overnight while I was away on a course, and he gave them juice with their tea instead of milk (which I always gave them). Daughter must have been about 4 at the time - she put her hands on her hips and adopting a most parent-like tone said "Daddy, you are doing it all wrong!"

Reading about things children say, reminds me of when my son was in his last few weeks of playgroup and was going to be starting school after the holidays, at four and a half years of age and an elderly lady across the road, when we lived in Largs, had always made a fuss of him (probably the long blonde curls he always had until getting them cut off for starting school) and when it was his sister's birthday Mrs McDonald gave her a birthday card with a £5 note in it.

So that her brother didn't feel left out, she left an envelope with £1 inside for him so when he came in from playgroup, I told him to run across and thank her for the money. He said "It's not worth it for £1, but if if it was £5 I would!" Mrs McDonald thought it was funny for a young child to come out with that... but he's always been 'honest' and one Christmas when he was about five years old, another neighbour had bought him a transformer toy that turned into a robot and it had broken before lunchtime and unknown to us he had gone and knocked on her door and told her it was rubbish... she thought he was funny too!!!

#55 - lovely Harry - my first smile today!

When I was teaching, I told a chatty 4 year old to get on with his 'work' and he said that if I stopped interupting him he could - I had to walk away, shoulders shaking, trying not to laugh out loud......

    #70 - he's a lovely man, Deebee - I wouldn't be without him.

I can remember making my mother blush when we were buying shoes for starting school.

I was getting bored, having tried on what seemed like endless pairs of shoes. The shop assistant was taking each new pair from the box, threading the laces into the shoes and fitting them to my feet.

I identified a flaw in the system and suggested that she could save my time by coming in to work earlier to lace up the shoes in advance.

The shop assistant shot my mother a killer look and my mother, in turn, shot me a 'just you wait till we get home' look.

We bought shoes from another shop. :P

*chuckling at Harry's link and the subsequent 'out of the mouths' stories*

My youngest, at her 3 and a half-year progress check with the family doctor - - - - he held up some colour cards and with a withering glance followed by a very adult sigh, said: " I don't DO colours. And before you ask - I don't DO numbers either"

I remember exchanging a "where the dickens did THAT come from!?" glance with him.

"Jean de Florette", inspired by Verdi's "La forza del destino" as featured in the Stella Artois adverts who sponsered queens club for ages and is stunning

buzzy - you have some really imaginative ideas for tunes for the show.

We *think*, although no-one knows for sure - that the Drive Team sort the playlist in the afternoon when they have a production meeting to shape the show. May be best to try and get your ideas in a little earlier?

no I just don't know when to stop going on i should stop but thank you Katy mac if only an exact time could be given by the production team and longer to think!

    Hi Everyone!

Great show tonight and wonderful to hear Glenn Frey.

Had terrific medical appointments today, healing slowly and do well said the plastic surgeon and the best from Mrs. oncologist, no chemo and radiotherapy necessary for my ancillary treatment! I'm very, very grateful and what a light-filled shift to life. :)

    Hugs all round,

    LB, x

Lilac Blue, I'm so pleased your news was good today and that no chemo or radiotherapy in necessary for you.

Jennie I hope that as your day has gone on that you're feeling much improved.

I have been watching Andy Murray's tennis game on the television so I have had Drivetime on quietly in the background and caught menshes for Ponyclubmum and Hoffs, so well done both. When I heard Level 42's Running in the Family I felt sure Deebee's name would have been mentioned, seeing as she's clearly a big fan!

  • Comment number 82.

Great news Lilac Blue - you must feel very relieved.................... :0)))) hugs

I do feel better thanks, Flo. Mr has just prepared soup and toast which went down very well - just what the doctor ordered, I think!

    Hope everyone has good evenings.

See you tomorrow - without the 'whirling pits', I hope!

Hi all. Been one of those days. I fear it's not going to get any better for the rest of this week :-(. I will probably favour Wimbledon over DT for the next fortnight although I wish Andy hadn't played quite so well & I might have remembered to listen to Glenn Frey.

Jennie, hope you feel better tomorrow.

Wow cBzz, that was some break. Good to have you back.

Sorry to hear some blogchums are feeling poorly but good news for you Lilac Blue - you must be so relieved.

Jennie, I don't think it was me - unless was it Oh Daddy, Fleetwood Mac? My memory is so bad, I missed a dental appointment today as it wasn't in my diary. I can't even remember calling to make the appointment which was a reschedule from a couple of weeks ago as I couldn't get through due to Olympic Torch.

Liking the shape of everyone's bananas today too.

I'm off to a graduation tomorrow to support all from the Shire we have funded through a Post Grad. A day out really with a strawberry tart thrown in :)

Jennie Wren - Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better :)

Posh Soul Lady - Enjoy your Olympic torch party... And your sausages! ;D

#85 Shona - I know what you meant, but your 'banana shapes' comment made me LOL ;-)

Well done on the menshes, I heard Hoffs & Mandy, but well done all who got menshed :))

Glenn Frey was just wonderful, wasn't he? I was busy in the kitchen when he came on, but I had to take time out to listen to him singing, especially that amazing piano version of 'Take It To The Limit'. Great stuff!

I must be away to bed now, I'm not as young as I was... ;-)

Morning! Just a quick visit as I didn't manage to get back here last night to say 'thank you' very much to the Drivetime team for picking my name for a mention and to Deebee for alerting me to it. Unfortunately I missed it 'live' because Mini Hoffs needed an early night so only managed to listen up until the end of the wonderful session with Glenn Frey. I had to listen back to that section of the show twice last night and hope to do so again today. For me there aren't enough words to describe just how enjoyable it was listening to him and I am smiling as I type about how obviously Simon felt the same way as so many of us out here! Certain Eagles songs have always been the familiar ones to which I have returned time and again over the years and never tire of hearing so 'Take It to the Limit' in such a simple form was fab.

Great children's sayings and stories on this blog - made me chuckle a lot. Congrats to Gill's cherub for her sports day achievements and hope that Julia's pre-school sports day went well too. LilacBlue, your post stood out a mile for its positive news, I am so pleased for you. I hope you continue to feel better by the day.

Got to go. Hope to be back later if poss but may I just wish our lovely friend Zoe a very happy birthday for today, before I disappear xxx
