Pink Champagne On Ice
Enjoyed myself yesterday. It was admittedly unwise to claim I could beat the rest of the team in a 100 meter sprint, but apart from that, a good day (maybe my gastric condition will have to last a little longer). Sitting next to Glenn Frey as he sang "Take It To The Limit" was a memorable few moments. Here was a voice I'd listened too for 4 decades, still sounding great and being charming at the same time. He seemed pleased to be sitting at Elton's piano and still energised by the songwriting and recording process. Wish we could have put the songs on the podcast but sadly that can't be done so iplayer is where you have to go to listen again.
Today its Celia Imrie, one of the many stars of "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel". Alongside Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson and Dev Patel, it really is a 'feel good' film. And a feel good film because of the charachter's refusal to fade into the darkness and just 'retire'; they all think there is something they still have to contribute/experience. Touching and funny was the verdict from this house and you can hear Celia discuss this and Calendar Girls, Acorn Antiques etc from 6.
And so oldies please on a HOTEL theme. Whichever aspect of hotel life you fancy but it's a pretty rock'n'roll subject I think.
Have a Tiffany-twisted, cool-wind-in-your-hair kind of Wednesday. See you after 5.

HOTEL oldies?
I'm sure the Eagles and Elvis will be frequently mentioned, so a couple of other suggestions from me:
LOVE - A House is Not A Motel
BOBBY THURSTON - Check Out The Groove
THE BEATLES - Savoy Truffle
FRED ASTAIRE - Putting On The Ritz
For the Bates Motel in "Psycho"
TALKING HEADS - Psycho Killer
For those who find unexpected charges on their bill:
SHAGGY - It Wasn't Me
For anonymous hotel encounters:
BILLY PAUL - Me & Mrs Jones
and I suppose there's:
MADONNA - Holiday (Inn)
THE KINKS/KIRSTY MacCOLL - Days (Inn)
JIMMY CLIFF - Hard Road To Travel (Lodge)

Deebee, you asked a while ago for book suggestions. I would add a couple, without knowing what you like. At the moment I am half way though The Long Earth, the new Terry Pratchett / Stephen Baxter collaboration. It is a twist on the “many worlds” theory, lots of new earths that you can just “step” onto. It is apparently the first part of a series so a little rambling while it establishing characters but I love it so far.
The best book I read this year was Stephen Kings’ 11.22.63. Time travel adventure around the assassination of JFK (but so much more than that). I could not put it down; I was stirring risotto with one hand and holding this in the other. It is a bit of a monster at almost 900 pages but I think you mentioned you had a kindle.
Talking about books, I don’t think our glorious leader has mentioned it (would have to go on a course or something I suppose, no doubt someone will tell me if I shouldn’t be mentioning it here) but he is talking about Itch at the Edinburgh Book Festival on Saturday 18th August (he even gets his picture in the brochure). I mention it now as the tickets go on sale this Friday morning. I trust he is worth £4.50.

I still feel grotty. Called doc out and she thinks I have a middle ear infection which apparently should clear up on its own - if not tablets can be prescribed. Have to put up with it for a few days and see what happens :0(
Found a Richard Gere film amongst all the dross on the box so hopefully it will keep me amused for an hour or so..Wish I liked tennis...

#9 Katy, can you really see Drivetime playing Chelsea Hotel? Janis Joplin's shenanigans are hardly suitable pre-watershed listening. ;0)
I've been listening the Glenn Frey's new album. Not overly impressed. So many people do it so much better and I think the idea of 'standards' album is a leeeeettle passé. Having said that, I must concur, "Take It To The Limit" was bloody marvellous last night.

I went there and ordered some Edinburgh Rock, but then I got a hankering for some Oddfellows, only they didn't have them. So, I had to go to another similar place so that I could get both.
Along with some Sherbet Straws.
And Mint Cracknell drops.
Honestly, I was like a kid in a, er... , sweet shop!

Lilac Blue, your post on yesterday's blog stood out a mile for me, then you wrote so beautifully again today. You are truly an inspiration. Take the greatest of care as you continue with the recovery process.
No blog suggestions today as too late to join the party, but did tweet a couple this morning, not least of which was Hotel California - any excuse to hear a little bit more from the Eagles after last night's show.
This might not be agreeable to everyone, but this afternoon, thank goodness for ELO. I had a car full of 5 & 6 year olds on their way back from a local primary schools sports gathering. The noise was deafening and Teen Hoffs, who had joined me from his sick bed for the ride, typed a message on his iPod - 'It's going to be a LONG evening' (several are here for tea). I reached to switch on the CD player and Mr Blue Sky joined us. Sudden silence. Phew!
Looking forward to the show tonight. Mr Frey will be a hard act to follow. No pressure now!
Ps. Simon - up it from 100m to 200m tonight, go on, you know you want to!
