Morning all, it will almost be a shame if Ascot doesn't have traditional a PR disaster relating to their dress-code. Maybe they're finally getting it right.



Many years ago I was physically man-handled by a burley female security guard who was checking that I wasn't wearing denim (I was wearing cotton chinos) at a time when they had a "no-denim jeans" rule in the Grandstand Enclosure. The rule was bizarre for a public enclosure, especially on a Wednesday in the jumps season, but physically manhandling your customers to check compliance is shocking.



The kind of stuff the gatemen and security people used to be notorious for is so at odds with the approach and hospitality shown by the Trustees when our group's horse won a big hurdle race there that it was hard to believe it was the same organisation. I came away with the impression the Trustees were more relaxed than the course management was on their behalf. Of course it might just mean they're very, very good at their job and at separating themselves from the people carrying out their wishes :-)

Yesterdays 'chors' went in an odd fashion, It took me 3 attempts to fix the patio table and 2 attempts for the gazeebo. All of which goes to prove I should have procrastinated longer as clearly I do my best work in the evening !

#82 Ken - the problem with having a dress code is that it becomes a bug-bear for those who do abide by it, to see those who don't swanning about. I went last year for Ladies' Day and the friend who took me was very clear about the expectations of the dress code (he was in full regalia complete with top hat!) and, of course, I complied as his guest. But it was somewhat grating to see very short and stappy dresses on display all over the place. In my opinion they should just remove the dress code except to say hats /fascinators and smart clothing only (no jeans, trainers or hoodies). Would make life much simpler.

#97. I have no objection to Members/Club enclosures having a dress code. I'm quite happy that the annual members should be able to decide standards in their enclosure and expect anyone else choosing to use that enclosure to abide by it. I used to go suited and booted when using Tatts. Especially as nothing you can do from there (get to the paddock and winners' enclosure) is denied to anybody in the priciest public enclosure (Grandstand/Tatts). Well that's the case at all other meetings anyway - not sure if the Grandstand gives that access for the Royal Meeting given the existence of the Royal Enclosure which moves everything else back down the track.



I don't think any other enclosure should have any dress code. The contrast between here and Ireland is amazing. I've been to Leopardstown 3 times and the equivalent of the members enclosure had no dress code. Owners in suits happily mingled with people in jeans with no issues at all. Seems to be the case there that you are strictly paying for a better view of the winning line by moving to the top enclosure with no expectations regarding dress code at all.
