OMG!ABC!NORWICH!

Simon Mayo|09:00 UK time, Tuesday, 19 June 2012

Lovely sunny school run, cheerful banter about tonight's football and the imminent marking/return of exam papers. Flags now turning up in a few places, adding to the post-Jubilee and pre-Olympic bunting and I was thinking that les enfants will have a lot to remember about this summer. Not the weather clearly as the grot returns tomorrow, but everything else seems pretty sparkly.

Really enjoyed yesterday and Sir Ken was just delightful. He manages to combine charm and talent in a way that is remarkable. He would have been happy to stay and talk longer I think; he looks great and the knighthood has really made him proud and settled. Oh, and the new Wallender is terrific stuff. Let's hope he's back soon!

Today we welcome Martin Fry of ABC to Drivetime. I reckon there are a few of you who will have purchased "The Lexicon of Love" in 1982. It was one of those albums that everyone seemed to have. Produced by Trevor Horn, it seemed to be everywhere; All of My Heart, Poison Arrow, The Look of Love, almost every track was played non-stop. There were more hits of course but 1982 and 1983 was a great time for Martin Fry. He has continued to sing and record and wear his gold lamé jacket. Please wear yours for today's show.

And so lets do SONGS OF THE ALPHABET defined in any way you wish.

Have a remarkable and sparkly Tuesday. See you after 5.

Hello all from a soggy Scottish Borders. Dog smelly, waterproof coat hung up to drip dry, boots stuffed with newsapaper.

I haven't come up with any tunes yet, apart from what has already been suggested, but am a little distracted by the Norwich reference? Have I missed something? Do I have too much rain in my eyes? Am I just being stupid? Any help?

Back later if I don't decide to hibernate - it is autumn again, isn't it?

Greetings Ter The Mayo & ALL Blog Peeps...

Bingo Star 'ere... Coming To You From The Only Working Toilet In Me 'ouse (Another Place For Reflection Ter Take Time Out From The Stresses Of Life)... (PS Me Second Toilet Is In Me Bedroom Awaiting A 'ole Ter Made In Me Bathroom Wall For It).... Long Story... Talking Of Which......

Mayo Man - Firstly a know of somebody from Radio Norwich.... Know as Mr Alan Patridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As for the ABC.... News ter me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Secondly a was listening ter yer most nice show yesterdee and 'eard yer say about Bristol Parkway station being one if the worst places ter spend 2 'ours AND a 'eard yer mentioning being stuck in a waiting room full of flatulant passengers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND a 'eard yer article of philosophy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the Bingo Star's main philosophies of life is:

Try NEVER ter follow the crowd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is EXACTLY were most people go wrong in life.... And applies very much ter were rail passengers go wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They all cram inter a waiting room.... Paying for 'ighly priced refreshments..... Only ter end up with their backends blowing BIG!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Of which yer found out ter yer cost!!!!!!) (Not just in financial terms but in fart terms!!!!!!)

Then everybody lazily crams onto the platform as near ter the entrance as possible and then when the train comes they all cram inter the same carriage, often resulting in them being unable ter find a seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(Ave been on trains with the whole carriage ter meself, walked upter the buffet car only ter find people standing!!!!!! (And a don't mean standing at the buffet car because of the buffet car.... Standing standing 'cos of no seats (And ave noot 'ad a carriage ter mesen 'cos ave goot severe flatulance!!!!!)))

This is a prime example of 'following the crowd madness!!!!!!!!!!!!'

Many of these people are so called 'ighly intelligent with 'ighly paid jobs/ substantial qualifications..... Yet despite going often on a journey of 'undreds of miles.... Their tiny minds will not allow them ter walk 192 yards up a platform ter getta seat on the train!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Following like sheep!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Noot thatta wanter put sheep down (And a don't mean in 'ter sleep terms' that would be most mean... (Although many a time sheep 'ave 'elped me get ter sleep by counting them!!!!! (It once 'appened at a gate in the middle of the welsh 'ills!!!! A was standing there... Counting the sheep in the field.... Next thing... A was out cold all!!!!!! Out cold!!!!!!

Until a goot woken by an irrate farmer for blocking 'is gate!!!!!!)))

The thing is a think sheep 'ave more common sense than 'umans... A for one 'ave NEVER seen a sheep go to the world monetary council for quantative easing due to it blowing all of it's assets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talking of blowing it's assets.... Where was a????? Oh I yeah back ter The Mayo smelly waiting room incident....

I ALWAYS walk upter the end of the platform...... Not just ter getta better chance of a decent seat and ter noot follow like sheep, but also whilst waiting for me train.... A find the end of platforms a nice place ter be.... Often surrounded by wildlife, flower beds, the smell of the countryside.... Sometimes watching passing trains.... A place for reflection..... And am noot talking about me reflection in the puddles in the uneven platfrom that 'ave gather due to our most trying climate.... No am talking reflection of The Mind.... Of life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A place ter go deep inter thought about things.... In fact it's the end of railway platforms where ave written some of me nicest songs and jokes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something that would be impossible in a waitng room full of as Ben Elton put it...... 'Farty people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

So my advice Mayo mate..... Take the 192 yard walk (sometimes it can be as little as 24 yards if it's a shorter train) and it will open up the mind..... closer ter descovering the philosphy of the meaning of life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Euro was a fine example of noot following the crowd (lucky the UK didn't fully).... (probably why nobody voted for us at The Eurovision gig.... a mixture of their vision being clouded/ jealousy)..... Same with Warren Buffet.... 'e ALWAYS says do the opposite of what others are doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Glad ter 'elp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Julia40 - Yes a fully agree The Mayo as you put it is a 'darn to earf geezer!!!!!'

One reason is 'e is a virgo aka an earth.... VERY much like mesen being a capricorn!!!!!! Us earth signs are VERY down ter earth!!!!!!

Deebee - A was only joking about being a trianspotter.... A came ter me senses aged 12!!!!!!!!!!

Butta would be willing ter pretend ter be a trainspooter if it goot me The Mayo's 'graph!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Niceness ter each ;-)))))

And herbs to grow Gill - sage, thyme, chives, basil, parsley - they are all fairly easy. If you grow mint, don't put it directly into the ground - put it in a pot or bucket as it goes everywhere if you're not careful!

Yes I do - in a multi-tasky sort of way - invariably online/cooking when footie is on and have been known to have radio on in an adjoining room where if I sit at the desktop PC I can see the TV screen in living room.

Had to remove the TV from the office/kitchen area because it was distracting me from work.

Good to see you again Parsley-cat and thank you for kind words.

And talking of herbs - also spotted in blog [yup - am still playing catch-up] - Gill Withagee's request for herb garden ideas. I've had a pretty successful year on the herb front. You'll still be able to pick up the small plants in pots from your local market or garden centre which you can still transfer to their garden place.

Thyme, Oregano, Sage, Rosemary, Chives, Lemon Balm, Mint [containered] have all worked well for me outdoors. Usually keep my Parsley, Basil and Coriander indoors.

I didn't own Lexicon of Love - it wouldn't have sat at all comfortably alongside Wind and Wuthering, Close To The Edge, Animals etc.

#cringealerton But that was then and this is now #cringealertoff So I do now own "Absolutely...The Best Of" as they did do some good songs justifying a slot in the collection for a CD :-).

  • Comment number 37.

Morning Simon, team, NYM, and lamé clad bloggers.

As a Norwich lad, we always used to get a giggle about the "other" meaning of our fine city. And let's not mention E.N.G.L.A.N.D.

I played The Lexicon of Love over and over and over again. I think Rebecca might like it too. (On a sadder note, I read a very sad article this weekend about the tragedy of Trevor Horn's wife. Doesn't bear thinking about. I'll leave blogvets to look it up, if you so desire)

    https://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2012/jun/15/happiness-is-being-a-loser-burkeman?commentpage=1

The article itself is illuminating but the subsequent comments are even more so. Following Rebecca's assessment of her philosphy course, it might be better value

than three years reading PPE at Magdalen College, too.

What's also quite remarkable for an online open forum is that you have to read through to page 5 before the brickbats start flying :0D

And, I'll third HMHB. Please! You can easily bleep the offending word. Come on, Wogey, The Biscuit need you.

#48 Katy, last night's show featured Alain de Botton discussing philosophy. A three-worder from last week had expressed the opinion that philosophy is confusing. Might be worth a listen on the iThingy (©JBG).

There's no link between this article and last night's programme except that it examines one of philosphy's big questions: how can we lead a more contented life.

#55 Katy, I haven't listened again (last night's show won't play at the moment on the iThingy (©JBG)) but I'm sure Rebecca made a comment that on her philosophy course she wasn't taught to think. Quite remarkable considering she attended Oxford University.

#44 I missed the discussion last night, but I've just read the article and scanned through some of the comments. It makes a fascinating read - thanks Harry! I don't know much about philosophy - I did once think about studying it but only got as far as reading 'Pooh and the Philosophers' by John Tyerman Williams. Which isn't as flippant a statement as it might sound - it a while ago now that I read it but I remember he did try and explain a number of philosophical theories in fairly simple terms that a dunce like me could understand...

Should I stop procrastinating and do something worthwhile ?

    #32 - what's this about keeping Parsley indoors - what have I done to deserve that ? I'm a free-range lion !

#63 - you could have had Romeo & Juliet by Dire Straits in the Morse list. Two for the price of one.

Good afternoon all, a bit late to the blog today.

As usual a great selection of tune choices for Simon.

There are a number of gameshows that rely on letter of the alphabet selection like

    BLOCKBUSTER - THE SWEET

#60 Harry - That was an interesting article, I'm certainly for embracing a bit more negativity, I think it's helped me get this far in life! Positive thinking is all well and good, but I am more of the philosophy that preparing yourself for the worst, will help mitigate the disappointments of the harsher side of life. Not that I'm a misery guts, I laugh a lot, and find humour in many situations, but although I'm grateful when things go right, I'm always prepared for them to go wrong.

Philosophy can mess with your head, I got a bit depressed when I first started studying it, because the lack of certainties was alarming. But now I credit philosophy with opening my mind to infinite possibilities, and I no longer freak out over the theory that I'm just a brain in a jar, so long as they change my fluid and clean the dust off of my jar, I'm happy! ;-)

#66 Gill - I'm suffering from disappearing pegs too! I don't know where they go (maybe over into next door's garden if twin 1 gets hold of them) I have wooden ones, but not the one's we used to make peg dolls with. I wonder if you can still buy them? Someone must still make them.

Another busy day means no time for blogging or mensh-chasing. I really hate it when work gets in the way of important things!

I will try and catch up later and have a read about philosophy.

I hope everyone else is having a good day. Some good songs but the look of it from my quick 'scroll'

    Bye for now ......

#73 Zoe, I'm pleased you got something from it. I think it would be interesting to read the whole book.

As I said above, I think some of the comments were even better than the article itself. If I'd known that Luther was such a "fun-time Charlie" I might have found it easier to embrace Protestantism ;0D

#50,51. Katy, sorry not to respond sooner, I'm a tad busy. I was going to say 'tied up', but I know how your mind works. I too remember Noisy both mentioning on the blog, AND on his show, Half Man Half Biscuit, and quoting from 'Joy Division Oven Gloves'. My suspicion is that somewhere in his record collection, there lurks a copy of 'Achtung Bono'. I think they may hold a soft spot in his heart, but as for that transposing into the actual playing of them on his show, I am not too sure. I do, however, think that the Drivers suggestion of 'The Referee's Alphabet' has slightly more chance of being played, despite its one expletive, than your own fine idea that he plays 'Back In The DHSS', but mainly because yours is actually an album. Track three would exclude it from consideration all on its own. ;0)

#60 Thanks for that link Harry, very interesting. I got into philosophy a little whilst studying at the OU and really enjoyed learning about it and trying to make sense of it all. However, I did not enjoy trying to write endless essays on it and particularly disliked examinations on it; for me it was one thing discussing the subjects amongst friends and fellow students and another one entirely trying to marshal some credible thoughts onto paper in limited words! Luckily it was just one of the subjects in a very varied humanities course and I chose to opt for another course after the first year which didn't hurt my brain so much ;)

#91 Very imaginative descriptions, well done that woman! Astericks on the #Profanity Scale? What a gall! ;)

    Hi Fellow Bloggers,

I've been trying to limit my visits to Simons' Pages of Blog, but allas I have failed. Always reading them but never have anything of value to add. Today I have only one suggested tune but at this late hour its probably too late.

    IOU - FREEZ

Cannot remember what they looked like, but the tune is going to go around and around my head for the rest of the day.

ABC did lots of great tunes to sing to, am always trying to teach my daughter the beauty of the 80's music.
