Arise! Arise!

Simon Mayo|09:16 UK time, Monday, 18 June 2012

And a jolly good Monday to you all. My weekend highlight was to pass away a few hours at Bristol Parkway station where, having missed a train, I got to spend an hour or so with the assorted crisp wrappers and discarded crusts that seem very popular there. We blew away a small space and perched, not breathing, for as long as we could manage. This was on the way back from the Cheltenham Science Festival which was a hoot and met loads of listeners and listener's children. And in a few cases, their children's children. I was, by some way, the least scientific person there but we all got along fine and I got to give Robert Winston a book (my book obviously otherwise that would be stupid). He said he would read it and apparently was seen doing just that yesterday.

And father's day brought chocolate, sherbet lemons and a mug with (wait for it) the periodic table on it. Just in case I need to check my transition metals and noble gasses.

And today (after watching the new Spiderman film) we welcome the freshly knighted SIR Kenneth Brannagh! Yes it's really him! The star of so many films (most recently My Week With Marylin) and director (most recently Thor) is talking Scandinavian cop hit Wallender and sundry matters. So oldies then for THE NEWLY KNIGHTED. KNIGHTS and DAMES are the lowest form of nobility but it sounds pretty darn good to the rest of us. Some love the SIR (Ben Kingsley), some hate it (Ridley Scott), but we salute them all (morning Sir Terry, a secret blog reader).

Have a sane and coherent Monday. See you after 5.

Any chance someone could give the bathroom a wipe and the sitting/front/living room the once round with a feather duster please?

I'll get on with painting the walls (royalty always expect everywhere they go to smell of fresh paint).

Did not compete yesterday as the whole event was over running and my mate wanted to get back to celebrate Father's Day with his girls.

I have an interview tomorrow for a 3 year contract and where I was contracting up to the end of March, I have had to use the dentists excuse as my current contract is rolling 3 month covering maternity leave which may end at the end of July.

  • Comment number 24.

Salut, tout le monde! Alors, aujourd'hui ……………………………

*Oooops, forgetting I don’t need to be French for a while.*

    Good morning everyone.

They say a change is as good as a rest and I rejoin the bloggerati refreshed and with a new perspective: "since I no longer expect anything from mankind except madness, meanness, and mendacity; egotism, cowardice, and self-delusion; I have stopped being a misanthrope." :0)

I trust you will all bring me up to speed if I have missed anything important because I have no intention of reading back. I only lurked a couple of times over the last 2/3 weeks so I don’t really know what’s been going on.

I hope every single one of you is well and that all those that aren’t are well on the road to full recovery.

Although I’m a little ambivalent about the whole exercise, the ‘lympic Torch pays me three visits this week: Wednesday evening it goes across the top of our road; Thursday morning it goes across the bottom; and, late Thursday afternoon, it passes directly in front of the shop so you should get a glimpse of my little emporium, if not me, on the webcam should you be so inclined. (Un)fortunately, I’m helping out with democracy on Thursday so I won’t see it but Mrs Snapper has promised to wave, regally, as it passes by.

    Mensh chase? Not today, methinks.

Now, where’s that naughty step .............................

    ;0)

#12 And on a more serious note...

Just wanted to congratulate whoever chose Friday's ARFO. An inspired choice sir! At the very moment Vindaloo came on thousands of Drivetime fans were dashing home from work early to watch the footie. Yes, it's an awful song - but the point of All Request Friday is to fire people up for the weekend - and I can't think of a better song for last week.

Us bloggers are so lucky to be able to try and influence the music played 4 nights a week. ARF is a completely different show and I don't begrudge anyone their moment of selecting a bit of cheese to mark their special weekend.

Oh, and yes I know Radio 2 covers places other than EN-GER-LAND - but Jeremy Vine had bagpipes on Tuesday and Chris Evans had been promoting Radio Wales all week.

Looking to future ARFO choices - anyone for tennis?

Going to get off this soap box now. Need the space for thie ever increasing ironing mountain in the 40 household.

Mayo Man - VERY sorry ter 'ear about yer missing yer train at Bristol Parkway Station!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For me the biggest upset would be is me ticket valid on the next train.... and if not 'ow much would it be ter buy a new one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Travelling by train is CRRRRAYZEEE expensive if yer buy a on the day ticket rather than book in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

And if yer do book in advance..... Then it's only valid on the train yer were mean't ter get on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mind you being a top celebrity broadcaster..... Am sure what with the financial rewards of reaching the 'ights of the 6th floor at The Western 'ouse..... Being required ter buy a new ticket while stuck on the western region bit of the railway.... This should not be a problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Or yer could blag yer way on by offering ter sign yer 'graph for the train staff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For sure a wish i'd been train spotting at The Parkway this weekend..... A would 'ave for sure swapped me pen and numbers book..... for me pen and autograph book..... MUCH better then taking train numbers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although a more than would 'ave been willing ter take yer train spotting for 2 'ours.... Of which a getta strong feeling yer'd enjoy spotting so much..... Yer wouldn't wanter leave on the next train!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello again everyone and greetings from the herb garden. I've had a break from contributing as I wasn't sure if this was my thing although I have been looking in at what's been happening. Reading back over some old blogs has encouraged me to have another go at joining in, so here goes.

Slightly belated good wishes to Katy Blogvet - always encouraging when medical matters go well.

I feel I should use the French version of my name to honour Harry's return from across la Manche, but as it is the same as a well known brand of washing powder I'll resist.

No one seems to have suggested :-

    (K)NIGHT FEVER - BEEGEES or

HOLLYWOOD (K)NIGHTS - BOB SEGER & SILVER BULLET BAND

#75 - I read all through that no problem. Not sure if that's good or bad.

for anyone else who did, PARSLEY = P3R5IL in French.

Sometimes it's the littlest things that make me happiest. I have just received a text from Mrs Snapper: "We have apples on our wedding tree" :0))))

All is right with the world.

    #79 - Ain't life grand!! :0)

  • Comment number 81.

    #79 I like that - a wedding tree! :)

And one that bears fruit too. (I hope - you've not just gone and sticky-taped some Granny Smiths onto a sycamore, have you?)

    :P

Post lunch coffee machine visit time...

#79 That is nice Harry. Although I'm assuming it's not a coded message relating to potential little snappers pending? ;)

Whilst not a wedding tree, my littlies did the same thing for mother's day, as they (well I) bought an apple tree, which is now residing in the allotment and was in flower, but not fruiting. Although given the rain, it may well have been washed away now!

    #80 Jennie, it sure is!

#81 cBuzz, it's actually two different kinds of apples grafted onto one root stock - a little Frankensteinian but it seems to be working.

#82 Andy, if there are little Snappers on the way someone has been "scrumping in my orchard" ............. I had the snip 25 years ago :0)

  • Comment number 84.

A quick hello and to say #75 Jennie I like your brain study thingy nd it's easy to read, just as writing words with only the first and last letter being correct and the letters in between mixed up... right up my street!

#79 Harry, why don't you do what my dad did when I was little, which was to grow an pear inside a bottle (only yours will be an apple) on your special wedding apple tree! Probably best trying to grow two or three to be sure... and choose your apple/s and trim off other shoots and branches around it and place a bottle over the branch where your apple is forming and secure it firmly to a branch nearby and hopefully it will grow and maybe you could put some spirit/liqueur in the bottle to preserve your apple!

You could do it secretly and surprise Mrs Snapper!!!

    #83 Harry's back! Where's that naughty step ;-)

#81 Not long until you & the future Mrs cBzz have your day

#83 - I'm sure Mrs Snapper only has eyes for you Harry. But it did have the look of a euphemism! ;)

  • Comment number 87.

    #86 I'd better double-check!

  • Comment number 88.

    Relax! Definitely non-euphemistic apples :0)

  • Comment number 89.

#85 Not long at all Mo - 2 and a bit weeks.

I'm really looking forward to both the big day and the ensuing bliss.

Off to the coffee machine again...

Welcome back, Harry. Some of us have been keeping the 'norty' step warm for you. It seems that we can now budge up for you! #83 lol!

#48 I just had to say what a fabulous 'lympic creation, Katy. Very impressive!

#77 Welcome back Parsley Persil Cat! So pleased that you are joining in again. :-)

Our two madchicklets bought Mr madchick an apple tree the Christmas before last, it is a self fertilising Cox's Orange Pippen, and last year it was absolutely laden with fruit - unbelieveable for its first year. This year, they have bought him a Filbert (cob nut) tree - not sure that that is a euphenism, Andy! ;-)
