Do I get bonus points for actually having been to Southfork? We visited when we lived in Texas a few years back. The big driveway with the metal gates is exactly how you see it in the opening titles. The patio where they had breakfast was like being in a wind tunnel and I have a photo somewhere of me sitting there looking very windswept. The rest of the house is fairly small so they filmed most of the interior shots in a studio. The swimming pool was quite small too but for all those scenes of Bobby doing laps they would fix a mirror to one end to make it look huge.

I enjoyed the short extract from the new book club book, The Age of Miracles, shame it is not released until 21 June.



I finished listening to the Itch audiobook this week. I’d really liked the book when I read it but had somewhat raced through it. Listening and therefore hearing every word made me enjoy it even more. Especially in the last 1/3 I found myself holding my breath (even though I knew what was going to happen!) The last book that had made me do that was the Hunger Games. As Mandy said, eagerly anticipating Itch 2.

Yeeeeaaaaa! Whoop whoop for the torchbearers! They did an exchange of torchbearers right outside our offices. I got front row view too.



The police were on super form. Police bikes, lights flashing, making funny little noises with their sirens and waving at the crowds.



I even managed to secure o long blue inflatable sausage thing to wave in the air - and a cold bottle of Olympic brown fizzy drink that says Zero on it too. So a good morning was had by all.



Thank you Olympic organisers. They even managed to organise a bit of sun as well.

I was sent this - a reason why someone didn't want to attend the torch relay:



..... I think the torch relay a huge propaganda exercise by LCOG to make people who are not elite athletes believe that they have something to do with the Olympics and an completely against it, after all the idea for the Olympic Torch relay was actually the brainchild of the Nazis and introduced at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Hitler’s propaganda minister Josef Goebbels as a piece of media theatre. Organiser Carl Diem, their equivalent of Lord Coe, thought the torch relay – carrying the flame from Greece to Berlin – would be a brilliant way of associating Nazi Germany with the ancient Greeks who, Hitler spuriously claimed, were the Aryan ancestors of the Third Reich. Whilst I have no problem accepting that some people may for some reason want to attend such a farce ....



Not a view I'd heard, so thought I'd put it out there.

Hi Julia - lovely to see you. I've been missing getting out to play. One of our number was made redundant and her jobs were divvied up between us all and I copped for quite a few of the time consuming ones which is fine as I just love being busy :)

A friend has got us tix to see the torch when it comes to Lincolnshire - really looking forward to it as it's the only Olympic-type thing we'll be involved in. Said friend's husband and daughter, on the other hand, both have jobs at the Olympics - the daughter will be helping disabled people to their seats; can't remember what the husband is up to. They also have tix for some of the events.

#63 I've never heard that before and most likely no one who was cheering with me has heard about it either.



I do think the Olympic torch bearing thing has helped unite the country as well as the Jubilee. With everyone in the same boat during a credit crisis, I think the nation has jumped a chance for something to celebrate and be happy about.



A few of the torch bearers were outside our office at lunchtime letting people take photos of them and with them whilst holding the very shiny golden torches. I was tempted but didn't like to ask.



I really must get on with some work - and I still have a speech to write and rehearse for tomorrow as well. ~~~

Well it turns out cold-callers are usefull afterall. I just had one from an insurance company regarding the renewal of my Buildings & Contents. Sure enough they gave me a better offer, so on the mobile I get to the current provider who without a blink UNDERCUTS them ! (So much for the renewal quote they sent me last week)



Smiles all round, and Im now gonna treet myself to some LONG AWAITED chocolate of the bubbly pepermint variety.

Good luck with the speech writing, rehearsing and delivering - I'm sure you'll be magnificent. #63 Autumn Gale - I did know that the Olympic torch relay was a NAZI invention. I actually concur with what your correspondent said. But I think most folk would rather wave their flags etc, and be willingly deluded into believing that it's all fantastically amazing... Actually, that's the reaction that the German people had to the same spectacle back in 1936... Not that I'm inviting comparisons, of course ;-)

#71 Needs to be serious, this excess poundage won't come off without being serious. And if I don't rid of it before the big five-oh in 18 months (and I do want rid of it) I can't see me doing it in the following decade :-)



The app is useful. Too often before I've started, but got disillusioned when going to fast and not going far enough to achieve anything. The whole "now start running....slow down and walk...now start running" approach really seems to work in building you up from lots of small intervals of 1m running, up to fewer longer stints. Will be up to 25 minutes non-stop running by the end of next week, enjoying it (sort of!) and weight is starting to come off.



#various Olympics and Jubilee. Haven't really seen anything negative about the Jubilee as a concept other than from the republicans. The BBC allowed them to be over-represented by having Polly Toynbee on a two man paper review panel on Andrew Marr's show that weekend. Most of the flack was from people about the coverage, and the flack's pretty widespread.



My biggest gripe about the Olympics is how they're now presenting it as being under budget. They already got the budget increased to £7.3bm, got another £2bn contingency on top of that, and having spent 3/4 of that contingency they're now trumpeting they're under budget because they're giving 1/4 of the contingency or so back to the Treasurey. Putting it like that really is bovine waste of the smelliest variety.



But entirely happy to accept that people have enjoyed the whole torch thing. And other commentators have noted that people seem to think that being British is important again during the Jubilee and Olympic buildup. I think that's a good thing - not sure we're always allowed to feel British.

I can accept that some people want to celebrate, and be part of the event (the Olympics, as with the Jubilee) But equally, I think it's just as valid for those who object to said events, to be able to voice their disdain, or to quietly abstain from joining in.



After all, this isn't 1930s Germany, is it? ;-)

Hope things are well with you m' Lovely. think my time on here may be fleeting - bosses back in tomorrow so playtime will be curtailed :( Making hay while the sun shines (well actually the sun isn't shining, it's still v overcast here which is what the forecasters promised).



Maybe I'm missing the point here but does it really matter who started the torch relay? It may have had negative connotations in 1936 but I'd say they've been turned on their head and the torch is a more positive symbol these days, bringing communities together. Sometimes, it's not helpful to look back or to look too deeply into things and it's more helpful to take things at face value. I'm sure, in carrying on the tradition, Lord Coe's intentions were entirely honourable.



Oooh akshelly, that's a bit heavy for me.

#79 - well done for sticking at it Ken, noticing a difference in your weight and fitness levels will be all the encouragement you need to keep at it. I started running about two and a half years ago for similar reasons and I've been well and truly bitten by the bug.

Don't get me started on all the coverage there was of the PM leaving his daughter behind. Really? Do we need to know that? As long as the little mite didn't come to any harm I can't see how it could take up so much space on the news.

There will always be people who look at life and events therein and see a negative connotation, be it realistic or spurious. I'm with the live and let live camp. Enjoy it if it's your thing but don't spoil others' fun if it isn't.

I deleted a post I'd composed earlier - because I felt that this was probably not the most appropriate forum for a discussion of this nature ... but actually - what the heck.

AutumnGale felt it was a valid observation and as a few have opinions on this - who's to dictate what we can and we can't discuss in our little corner of the interwebs?

(and yes - this matter - what is or isn't appropriate - has been raised on several occasions in here in the past).



What I was going to say ..



I started by disputing Shona's first sentence in #73 ..



..you see - I assumed most knew about the Nazi connection - which has been amply highlighted by news columnists, the print press, social media over the last few months, has been raked over by the chatterati and those clever cynical bods who are privileged enough to use those platforms for their views. But perhaps that's a little harsh - my work means that I have to read this sort of stuff on a daily basis so perhaps I am more exposed than most.



I reckon most who are thoroughly enjoying a bit a flag waving and indulging in a huge slice of national pride really couldn't give a flying flute .. and I am one of those. For the majority of the 8,000 who are 'torch carrying' - their moment in the spotlight may end up being *the* most memorable time of their life.



But I would defend the right of anyone to stage their protest in whatever way they feel comfortable.



The very word 'history' decrees that most acts and deeds have a precedent or origin. Some evils will never be forgiven, despite this modern trend for current leaders apologising for the sins of their predecessors ... although this style of closure can be very helpful to some.



Life is about moving forward armed with knowledge of the past. Personally I would rather create my own history than be shackled by the knowledge of the actions of others.

#85 Toots/Tinks - I have a head full of rubbish! I actually read that Nazi doll story via a link on Twitter a while ago. I think the 'PM leaving his daughter behind' story, came about because of the government's policy launch concerning 'problem families'. Much like John Major's Back To Basics campaign, resulted in the subsequent slew of stories about Tory M.Ps up to no good. It didn't uncover his own hypocrisy though, as his dalliance with Edwina Currie didn't become public knowledge until much later.

I had to take a couple of weeks off. Either tore or strained my calf muscle when I went out on a Saturday morning feeling that it felt a bit tight. I got just towards the end of the first running stint when it went twang and I had to hop back home. It wa a pain as I'm still not quite far enough into it for a couple of weeks off not to be really noticeable when starting again.



The app definitely helps - I have a 10k version and once I've reached that stage at the end of the program the intention is to run three miles a couple of times in the week and a 6 miler on either Saturday or Sunday.

#87 Katy - I did deliberate over whether I should comment on Autumn Gale's post, or not, as I wondered if this was the right place for such a debate too. But I decided to go for it, because I seem to have an opposing view to most people here (and elsewhere) regarding the Olympic torch relay. I didn't feel comfortable with what seemed to be the prevailing opinion, that everyone was full of enthusiasm for the event.



I respect the fact that this is a significant moment in history for some people, and that carrying the torch, and supporting the torch-bearers, is creating some very special memories for all those involved. But I also feel that it's important that the contrary opinions get an airing. It's not about trying to dampen anyone's enthusiasm, or pour cold water on it all, it's just being honest about how different people view this historical event.



Knowledge of the history of events is important, at least it is to me. "Those who cannot remember the past, are doomed to repeat it..." And all that. I agree though, that you can't always let the history of something colour the way we look at it now. But if the present event in question, invites some comparisons with the past, then it's valid for commentators, and others to look at those, I think.

No post deliveries from Royal Mail on rainy days due to health and safety! The world has really gone mad now.

I've been very interested to read your opinions regarding the torch relay - and indeed that's why I posted it. There's been so much very positive publicity and excitement about it, it's interesting to hear the other side.
