Is That You?

Simon Mayo|08:57 UK time, Monday, 11 June 2012

Well, well here we are again and that drought is really getting out of hand now. Back to work with rivers of precipitation washing the roads clean and clearing the way so helpfully. Hope your week has been splendid and lovely. It was an interesting few days! A Sunday of getting frozen and sodden by the river (and then came the boats to make it all ok), a Monday of being the voice of god on TV (and a Buckingham Palace party with Macca, Tom Hanks, Robbie and assorted royals to make that ok) followed by a few days of Suffolk chips and ale. So that was ok (as was the appearance of Julia40 at the Itch chat in Blythburgh!). I have no idea what's been happening in R2 world but trust all has been well on DT and all the team are all geared up for today.

It is of course true that some will have half an ear on the England/France match which kicks off at 5 and we will have Matt to fill that role for us. So you don't have to. We do have a splendid book for our book club. It's Gold by Chris Cleave and tells the story of Zoe Castle and Kate Meadows who are the world's top two sprint cyclists as they build to the London games. But, it won't surprise you to learn, it's not really about cycling or sport but family, illness, rivalry and relationships. And a great read too, check out a chapter while you're here. Then Chris will be with us from 6.

And oldies please on the subject of FORGETFULNESS. This is, of course, because David Cameron and his wife, Samantha, left their eight-year-old daughter, Nancy, in a pub after having Sunday lunch there a couple of months ago. She is reported to have spent about 15 minutes at the Plough Inn at Cadsden in Buckinghamshire, before Mr Cameron returned to collect her. It is easily done of course. Many of you will have been forgotten or done the forgetting (admittedly without a security team to help count heads) so songs of forgetfulness will work well.

So have a chillaxed and mellow Monday, see you after 5. Yay we are back!

    Hi again everyone

    "Welcome back, Simon"

I once left my son asleep in his buggy at the foot of the stairs in a Clarks' shoe shop in Altrincham, Cheshire, after taking my daughter upstairs to buy new shoes when she was about three years old! After we had got outside and walked along the stret for a few minutes, my daughter reminded me that her baby brother was still in the shop!

A wet and miserable Monday morning sees me back to work (boo!) and the blog (yay!).

I haven't had a chance to catch up with las week's goings-on, so I hope everyone is well and survived the rain-soaked week intact.

I can't complain as this is a short half-term for me, but getting up this morning was a chore .... and it's so cold in my office I think I'm going to have to sit here with my coat on.

    Oldies:

    Never Forget - Take That

#9 PSL, Your second suggestion is particularly clever.

    My suggestions are rather tenuous:

HEY JUDE by The Beatles (isn't St Jude the Patron Saint of lost causes?)

    GET BACK by The Beatles

Have to say that if I forgot to bring Mr 40 (39 actually) back from the pub he would be absolutely delighted.

NEVER FORGET YOU - The Noisettes

  • Comment number 30.

I remember being lost in supermarkets and the like when young, and the terror I felt at not knowing where my parent was. Cherub seems far more relaxed about the whole thing, remarking 'It's OK, I knew you'd find me' upon our reunion. Of course she's only been 'lost' on a couple of occasions, myself on the other hand being the shorted of 6 siblings regulaly got stranded in the coat-racks of M&S.

Anywho, heres some selections from me n hubbs for today.

CALL ME IRRISPONSIBLE - FRANK SINATRA OR MICHAEL BUBLE

WISHIN' & HOPIN' - Dusty Springfield

  • Comment number 33.

The Waters of Forgetfulness – Gerry Rafferty

    Forget Her – Jeff Buckley

Jacqueline – Franz Ferdinand (somewhat tenuous even for me but it does mentions chips & holidays too)

  • Comment number 34.

Was it AlexG who was left in a crib under the table a Chinese Restaurant ...?

Seem to remember some chat in here ... ooh *years* ago

    :^D

  • Comment number 35.

#34 Katy, I've been thinking about that blog story too but can't remember... Think you could be right about it being AlexG though. May have been around the time we lost Little Girl at a party in the park gig where we were surrounded by about 1000 off duty police officers all of whom had probably spent time in their careers looking for lost children.

  • Comment number 36.

I have just read Simon's blog properly as I didn't have time earlier and have to say *well done* to Julia40 for getting your own special mensh from Simon! What a lovely start to the week for you!

    :o))

  • Comment number 37.

An even more tenuous suggestion. Leaving your child behind is:

SOMETHIN' STUPID by Frank and Nancy Sinatra

  • Comment number 38.

Good morning all from a wet and windy place

FUN FUN FUN - THE BEACHBOYS

('Seems she forgot all about the library. Like she told her old man now')

  • Comment number 39.

Forgot to say earlier, well done Julia40 for getting a blog mensh from Simon :-)

#18 Deebee - Blame the Beegees fest I had, after poor Robin's passing. Is it that obscure? I suppose it could be counted as one of their lesser known songs. Don't forget to remember, indeed ;-)

  • Comment number 40.

#36 Well thank you Flo! Yes, a lovely start to the week. Not sure all the day will go as well though. Suspect I might get detention when I go back to Big Girl's school this afternoon.

They had a name the national flag quiz this morning to kick off the Olympics theme in school. Grown ups escorted the children round the classrooms where the flags were displayed. Big Girl's teacher caught me and a Grandmother (who, I might add, is the retired Head Mistress of the school) taking a crafty look at a world map with a national flag border.

I'm long overdue a teenage rebellion. Never got detention when I was at school. What other naughtiness can I get up to today?

As for forgetting.... I lost Teen Hoffs when he was a littlie, in M&S. I went absolutely nuts, rushing round shrieking and on the verge of tears, until I found him My mother who was with me stayed absolutely calm, which I found strange until I realised that she was a veteran 'forgetter'.

    1) She left me in my pram outside a shop but took the dog home who had been lying underneath the pram. She was making lunch at home and wondered why the dog was whining at the door and then remembered...

    2) She left me in a department store in Leicester when I was about 6 and went off down the street to another shop. I managed to find her though.

Last New Year's Eve Mr H suggested that I should 'do something adventurous' this year and with only six months of 2012 left, I need to get on with it - you are welcome to come along - just need to decide what to do......

  • Comment number 73.

#40/#72 rebellions.....look forward to reading what you come up with. My rebellious years were pretty tame. I think I have made up for it now on the adventurous front but can't think that anything I have done could really be considered rebellious. Must ask Mum if she agrees when I see her at the weekend. #82 #88 I am so unrebellious - a friend of mine had a tattoo done for her 50th birthday (she's Welsh, and it was a little dragon on her shoulder). And while I admired it, at the same time I was thinking to myself "I could never do that - my Mum wouldn't approve at all..."

    ;o)

Phew!Had a busy meeting-filled morning, followed by an 'out of office' experience.

    Will have to read back.

#50 Mo, just shapenning my 'spikes'. Flaming Baton handover approximately 18:30.

Helloo again - thanks for the comments re: Mini Hoffs. Double good news, he came out of school in a good mood too. Phew!

#80 - Deebee - yes, please, definitely join in the late-teen rebellion, the more the merrier!

#82 - KatyM - I like it! Can you get the same result with gin and raspberry jelly, I wonder, just looking in my store cupboard.....

#87 - PSL - Excellent ideas - but, rather embarrassingly, can already tick two of those. Will have a think about the other two and get back to you.....

#88 - Zoe - OK - but if you change your mind, you know where we are...

And shimmying in with a late three worder:

BROKEN BOILER CONDEMNED. Delightful 'Jim' couldn't fix it - not on Friday, nor today, unfortunately.

Words can't describe how much I am looking forward to the show tonight...............

#94 - Two shots AND you have touched an iceberg?! Blimey, that's good going...

  • Comment number 96.

...in all fairness, 'what' chance is there in many of us touching an iceberg? Or want to for that matter?

Come on Psl, lets be 'aving the rest, I thought it might have caught Harrys attention, hope all is ok?

Things are a tad on the wet side out there today!

Happy days, all the same :)

    Hello all,

Been another one of those days so no time for choon chasing earlier but have to say you've done a fab job in coming up with a great playlist.. I hope at least a few of you are rewarded with a mensh!

I had quite a rebellious/adventurous, some might say downright naughty side to me in my younger days. And, I think if I look close enough it's never too far from the surface now ;)

Been a lousy day weather-wise. I know I shouldn't complain as some poor souls have it much worse where they are but I am truly sick of getting rained on .. and then some!

Jennie, glad all went well for you at the Docs.

Hoffs, pleased to hear mini Hoffs, and yourself, had a good day.

Zoe, I hope your 'holidays' are going well and quickly!

Cbzz and Mo, good luck with the handover ;)

Enjoy the show if you are able to catch it .... I am looking forward to it muchly :)

    Jillyx

p.s. Katy - pass the shots! lol

I see from reading back, that I am not alone in having problems posting. I have written endless posts both here and next door, only for them not to actually appear once sent.

Its very tedious, nothing much more than my usual waffle, but a waffle that I wished to share, nevertheless!
