Best Laid Plans

Simon Mayo|09:13 UK time, Friday, 1 June 2012

Well first of all many congratulations to Chris and Natasha on the arrival of Eli (7lbs 13 oz I think Chris said). An exciting time for them and for Noah, Chris sounded elated and emotional talking to Alex and David. I did allow myself a twinge of pity for the production team for the 500 Words competition on Breakfast. Hosting an outside broadcast this big is a really tough gig and for Chris to be whisked away at the last minute is a huge deal for everyone to work around. But what a great idea the show is and a real thrill for the children who won the prizes. Only a Radio 2 breakfast show will do this and the stories were wonderful. I've never been to Hay (though putting that right tomorrow) but how terrific that thousands of kids have enjoyed crafting a story with the hope of attending the festival and winning a medal. Even if child 3 is fed up that he's been excluded due to rules and regs. But well done to all winners!

Off to have a word with Robert Pattinson this morning. He and director David Cronenberg are talking about their new film Cosmopolis. There is a frisson around when certain folk hear that RPatz is in the building and people who should know better are all of a tremble. The Pattinson/Cronenberg interview will go out in a fortnight, today's chat is with Sir Ridley Scott the director and producer of Alien, Gladiator and now Prometheus the extraordinary sort-of-prequel to Alien. And I need to see it again very soon just work it all out...

Then the lovely start to the big bank holiday with the ARF. Tales of extravagant plans will fill the airwaves but your opening song is needed. The tune to launch 4 days of royal pageantry/republican sofa-hiding is your call.

Monday I'll be the voice of god for the Jubilee show and then a week off so Liza with you for a few days. Have a preposterous and extravagant Friday. See you after 5

    Good Morning Everyone

Simon, thank you for my very special, if trans-gender, mensh last night for "Living in the Love of the Common People". Nice to hear it was your "second favourite" suggestion. Wondering what your favourite was?

For ARFO - going to recycle another of yesterday's suggestions -

    LET'S HAVE A PARTY - Elvis - 1957

should get 4 days of celebrations off to a good start!

  • Comment number 5.

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Really enjoyed listening to the Breakfast Show from Hay this morning. I usually only have the radio on while I'm having breakfast, and then again a bit later when I get in the car to drive to work but today I didn't want to miss any so I put it on my fruity table to take upstairs while I finished getting ready.

Anyway, the all-important ARFO. With little hope of success after the comment yesterday, but I'll suggest it anyway:

LESSONS IN LOVE by Level 42

    Or we could have:

GET THIS PARTY STARTED by Pink

TAKE ME OUT by Franz Ferdinand

PLAY THAT FUNKY MUSIC by Wild Cherry

LAYLA by Derek and the Dominoes

    That'll do for now...

    ~X~

    Hi Simon and everyone

Congrats on the new arrival for Chris and Natasha and Noah.

I have polished the crown with help from the other wearers and escaped being damaged in Sparring last Friday and Monday!

Deebee surely you mean "Fruity Tablet" not "Fruity Table"?!!

And now for a Jubilee ARF:

COME UP AND SEE ME (MAKE ME SMILE) - Steve Harley and his Cockney Rebel.

Always good to put smiles on faces.

Have a nice jubilee one and all

Seems that Congratulations all round is the order of the day with Chris and Natasha's new arrival, the winners of the childrens writing competition and Queen Elizabeth on the start of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations weekend.

So for 60 glorious years a suggested ARF opener:-

    GLORY DAYS - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

  • Comment number 12.

Morning Simon, team, NYM and mostly jubilant bloggers,

I'm still sore for only getting an OSM for Gary Byrd's last night's show. And the fact you didn't play the full 12" version. But I won't sulk. It's one of those songs that takes me back to my yoof, lazy days hanging around (or chillaxin' as they do now), and my first serious girlfriend. Where are you now, Sian?

*takes a few moments to compose himself again*

Well, can't hang around, there's bunting to be hung, trestle tables to be wrestled with, and plastic sheeting and waterfproof shelters to be constructed.

An ARFO to get the weekend party started, eh?

I GOTTA FEELING - Black Eyed Peas

and after this week's visit from Paul Weller, what could be more British than The Jam/Style Council?

WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN - Style Council (Drum bangingly good to the last drop)

SHOUT TO THE TOP - Style Council

GOING UNDERGROUND (on the Jubilee Line!) - The Jam

Won't be around much for the next week, so wishing everyone a happy and fun long weekend and/or half-term, whether you're republican, revising or relaxing.

Well I'm going back to my old favourite. We've got a long weekend of celebration and the nation is be-decked with good spirit; olympic torch, jubilee, babies, birthdays and half-term.

    A fitting sentiment therefore:

What a Wonderful World - Joey Ramone

  • Comment number 17.

    Good morning, everybody!

Congrats to Chris, Natasha and Noah for their new arrival.

I missed Chris calling in to the show, so no idea if 'Tash came close to beating the shortest labour record! I doubt any of that matters now, though. They've got Eli and all's well with their world :)

Thanks for the mensh for REM last night, Simon.

I think I'm going to sit back for the ARFO chase today - I'm all Jubilee'd out.

Shona, I hope wee Jimmy's sugar levels are good.

    Off to the coffee machine...

Meant to say - hope our leader has a good time at the Hay Festival over the weekend. Are any blogpoppets going to see him? I can recommend it - I'm sure Dougal will agree with me that the Cambridge one was excellent!

    MICK JACKSON - Weekend

  • Comment number 20.

    Good morning Simon and Blogpoppets!

Like several on this blog, I also enjoyed listening to the childrens' stories this morning and my favourite was the one about the cow, which would probably be very easy to turn into a nicely illustrated childrens' book!

Congratulations to the Evans family on the arrival of their second son... and #17 CoffeeBuzz, I think Chris said it took 52 minutes of labour and two pushes for baby to appear!

Ooh, just thought of a song which would have been PERRRRRFECT for last night's theme, and might, just might, get things started for tonight's ARFO, with tongue firmly in cheek:

DIZZY MISS LIZZY - The Beatles

  • Comment number 26.

    Good afternoon all,

Congrats to Chris and Natasha. It was lovely hearing the news from Chris himself this morning. And didn't Alex and David do well.

#7 So lovely to "see" you here Sal, Big Girl is still watching the owls and kestrels.x

As for ARFO, well, I know it's a cliche and it will make a number of bloggers groan but:

DON'T STOP ME NOW by Queen

    should do the trick.

Must dash - It's an Inset/Baker/Teacher training day here and I'm dealing with a dead pet fish which Big Girl handed to me (literally) just after breakfast this morning.

    Have a good day.x

  • Comment number 27.

Ooh just noticed something in Simon's blog...

Are we expected news of an honours kind? Has Her Maj elevated our esteemed leader from "Lord" to "god". Didn't think that was in Liz's remit but after 60 years I guess she can do anything she likes really. ;-)

And Uncle Gazza - what a lovely gift for you, your brother and his wife. X

Thanks for asking about Jimmy Coffeebuzz. We have to up the insulin twice a day and he needs to go back for a day visit to the vet next week. But when I went to pick him up yesterday, he seemed to be getting spoilt rotten and had the run of the place ;)

  • Comment number 63.

Good morning each and everyone - cloudy and dull here today, been raining over night by the looks of it!

I hope it improves for all the parties that have been planned.

Glad to hear that Jimmy is ok, Shona. It sounds like he enjoys vet visits! We had two dogs a while ago - one hated the place and couldn't wait to get out, the other loved it because she got a biscuit and often the biscuit for the other dog as he wasn't going to be bribed that way - he was far too clever for that!!

    Good morning,

I hope Queen Deebee is feeling happy and glorious today.

My weather report is identical to Jenny's (no surprise there when you consider we are in the same county though).

Uncle Gazza, Enjoy your first cuddle with the little one. How lovely she has your nan's name as a middle name. We named our Little Girl after my nan and Big Girl has her name as a middle name.

Much excitement in the 40 household. Mr 40 (39 actually) has a gig at a Strawberry Fair this afternoon. At last a gig suitable for the girls to go to. He was supposed to be playing at the Hullabaloo Festival in Gloucester but that was postponed a couple of weeks ago because of the the weather.

    Have a good day.x

Dull and drizzly here - not the best start to the Bank Holiday weekend. Still, I'm sure the Dunkirk spirit will prevail... And I still have a smile on my face from yesterday, now I've had a chance to 'listen at a time more convenient'. :o))

Shona, so pleased to hear Jimmy is getting on okay. Our dogpoppet enjoys going to the vets - it might be something to do with the cats in the waiting room though...

    ;o)

Florence - hope you don't mind, but I've asked for the picture to be removed. It was a lovely thought though. And yes, I do know the difference between a corgi and a bassett!

    Hello lovelies,

Well I did write a quick post yesterday afternoon whilst on the train but it seems to have disappeared into the ether.

So, to recap ... Congrats to Queen Deebee for the ARFO crown and congrats to Gazza for the Uncledom.

The train journey was to The Emirates (crosses self!) to see Coldplay and they were absolutely fantastic. A great show and a good time had by all.

I bid you all a happy weekend, whether it is a long one for you or not, or whether you are jubilating or not!

    Cheers me dears :)

Let the celebrations begin! The sun has come out here - whoopee!

I bought myself some new plectrums earlier so I plan to break them in later on the old geetar - you may want to cover your ears~)

#70 Perhaps a new drummer to join me Flo?

  • Comment number 72.

Shona, the #70 drummer can probably spare you a couple of hours tonight but I think she will be busy tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday! ;o))

  • Comment number 73.

You can take the ear plugs out now. Ouch! It's the first time I've picked up the geetar in a few months - relegated to percussion normally due to lack of practice ;( And my fingets are bleeding.

Need to practice every night this week as we have a big jam session on next weekend.

    Good evening,

Not long back from a fun day out.

#65 Jennie and #66 Katy, Thank you for your kind messages. The gig went really well and the girls had a fab time watching daddy. At one point Little Girl was so pleased she dashed down and did cartwheels in front of the stage.

After the gig we went to a Jubilee party where we all sat shivering as the sun went down which the kids bounced on a bouncy casstle. Happy family all round.

    Night night.

I am glad you had such a lovely day Julia - how exciting for your girls to see their dad 'do his thing'!

Hope everyone has a great time and makes the best of what ever the weather throws at you!!

    Good Afternoon everyone

Glad to hear the gig went well Julia and it sounds as if you had lots of family fun.

I've been playing entertainment's manager to a friend's 2 boys today. A nice trip to a local park where I sat shivering and the boys had lots of fun.

Hope everyone is having a nice day.

Ooh, it's quiet on here today. Everyone must be out flag waving and joining in the Jubilee fun.

My fingets are throbbing - yes, I've been on the geetar again. Kathy's Song, Simon and Garfunkel was the first song Mr W and I ever played together and we used to get a round of applause from folks when we played it. I just can't get my plucking fingets (not swearing ~) to go where they are meant to go.

Anyhoo, a whole week to practice. Just realised that the last time I played properly was 17 months ago.

    Good evening,

Shona, How are your fingets now?

Today we got together with lots of neighbours for the big lunch. It was supposed to be a garden party but, need I say, we spent the day inside. We had among us lots of kids and an overdue pregnant lady. I was rather hoping we would be joined by a Jubilee baby - but no news as yet...

As we all huddled round the tv I thought of the stories I heard from my parents about how they had huddled round 12 inch televisions with neighbours 60 years ago to watched the coronation. In their case they got together because not many people had televisions. In our case it was just because we all wanted to be together and have some fun.

I wonder what the Queen is up to this evening? Feet up in front of the telly with a gin in hand?

    Night night.

  • Comment number 81.

    Good Morning Poppeteers

Blistered fingertips today but that's all part of the hardening and toughening up process. Geetar practice might be put on hold for a while this week as I received a certain book last night that I have been waiting for nearly 3 months now.

    *excited*

Just need to think of how to get the author to sign it ..................

Enjoy your day off if you have one. I'm heading off to a School Jubilee Party today which should be a lot of fun coupled with an office move sometime today or Wednesday which should be less fun.

But the sun is out and Itch is safely in my hands - so all is well ;)))))))

Good morning Shona and anyone else out there in Blogland - still droughting here , with a promise of drier weather later. Fingers crossed!

I wanted to plant out some courgettes, squashes and beans today but I think it will be too cold for them tonight - temps as low as 4C are forecast and I don't think they will be very happy with that. It would be a shame to lose them now after nurturing them for the last few weeks.

Hope your fingers recover soon Shona - a good read could be good medicine!

    Have lovely days everyone.

    #80 Lovely post, Julia!

#81 Hope the fingets recover soon Shona, and enjoy reading Itch.

Watched most of the Jubilee pageant yesterday. There was a certain amount of criticism on Twitter about the BBC coverage, which I thought was a shame - some people always manage to find a way to put a negative spin on things. I thought the flotilla was rather splendid, and how lovely would it have been to be in one of those boats! That would have been something to tell the grandchildren.

Talking of boats, we're off to ours today (postponed from yesterday due to the weather). Don't know yet whether we'll get to do any boating, but we'll spend the night on board anyway. It will be a good break.

Have a good Bank Holiday those that are having one, and don't work too hard if you're not!

    ~X~

  • Comment number 86.

It would have been my grandmother's birthday yesterday (115th) - she was born in the year of Victoria's diamond jubilee - something I wasn't aware of before yesterday.

Did anyone else think that the Queen looked a bit bored with yesterday's proceedings? I think she did a great job to stay standing throughout - not many 86 year olds could have done that but I bet she was thankful when she could have a sit down and a cuppa (or something stronger!)

    Morning all

Sun shining here today, after droughting down all day yesterday - we actually put the heating back on!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADCHICK - Hope you have a great day!

  • Comment number 88.

I think it would have been more impressive to see the flotilla 'live' rather than on TV. It was hard to imagine the scale of the whole thing as we could only see snatches of it at any one time. Perhaps if the weather had not been so bad, there would have been a helicopter up above, showing the scale of it.

It was a great feat of organisation though and certainly something to remember.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADCHICKSTER!

    Good morning, everybody!

    Bank holiday? What bank holiday?

I do get the Jubilee holiday tomorrow, though :)

    • Many congratulations to the new holder of the ARFO crown, Queen DeeBee!

    • Happy birthday to Madchick! Many happy returns of the day.

    • Shona, glad to hear Jimmy's doing well and has the vet well trained. Thanks for the earplug warning. I had on my 'super-strength' helicopter-proof offshore ear defenders and all was well with the world.

No oldie chase today, because Noisy Lord Ammo (aka 'the voice of God') is voicing over, then LizaT to opens up the mics on DT. Correct?

    Off to the coffee machine...

    Good morning!

Struggling to focus on any work today. There are 5 (yes 5!) Ferraris parked outside our office today. Anyone who loves cars would be in heaven. I have checked but they don't appear to be CLPs ;-)

I only watched a wee bit of the flotilla. Was taking too long for anything to actually happen so I switched over to the much more exciting tennis. Bet those who took part had a great time (well, maybe not those who ended up hospitalised through hypothermia). I really enjoyed the programme about how Gary Barlow put the Jubilee song together though.

Normal working week for me this week. Hope those who have them enjoy the bank holidays. Apart from tonight's gig (featuring our very own voice of God) what else is happening?

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MADCHICK!

    Happy Birthday Madchickster, You Rock!!!!!!!!

Yesterday was quite remarkable. There was no way the ever stoic 86-year-old Queen was going to sit on that faux throne. The War Horse from the stage hit that greeted the Queen from the roof of the Royal Festival Hall with a troupe of dancers using semaphore to spell out Happy Diamond Jubilee, and seeing Queen smiling at the sight of a life-size puppet horse which was running along the roof top, that was the most clever moment for me. The actual little Dunkirk boats was a poignant nod to WWII. The London Philharmonic’s choir, belting out Land of Hope and Glory as rain plastered their hair to their faces pretty much summed up that England can do Royal better than anyone or anywhere in the world, regardless of the elements.

I'm curious, what did you put up Flo that was moderated?

Julia, I'm waving a union jack napkin at you and have fun Katy!

    Morning all,

Just a quick poop by to wish the lovely Chickster a very Happy Birthday! Hope you have a lovely day.

Thought the TV coverage (especially on a certain (ahem) station) of the Flotilla was dreadful but I really enjoyed the Gary Barlow making of the song programme.

Hope good days are being had by all.

    Bye for now.

  • Comment number 98.

I'm glad someone else wasn't impressed with the coverage by a certain station. For something that was an important part of the history of the Queen's reign we got presenters who are not exactly blessed with the seriousness the occasion demanded - Matt Baker looked like he needed the loo all the time and as for the other 'celebrity' interviewers...........heaven help us all!!

    #90 Thanks Jennie.

#95 Mo I'll see your 5 Ferarris (you wish) and raise you a Harris Hawk.

The previous owners of our new office building left it unattended for some years, during which time, the seagulls moved in (to the roof). Several years of seagull squat clogged up the drains and gutters.

Our office manger's approach was to hire in a bloke with a Harris Hawk to scare the mutant gulls away from nesting on our roof.
