Sup Up Your Beer And Collect Your Fags
Up too soon. Tired and weary. However, will be tip top and sparkly by the time 'Our next at six" is heard at the end of the news. Whether it is Fran or Fenella, Ricky or Charles - whoever cues us up - we'll be ready. (Now when I say 'we' I mean 'me'. We don't all live together. That would be a stressful state of affairs indeed). There might be a need for an afternoon snooze I'm feeling.
Not that I'll be admitting that to our guest today; Paul Weller rocks up with some live songs after 6. At 54 (!) he's still producing new work and not content ever (ever!) to play his back catalogue. His new album Sonic Kicks came out in March and was, of course, a number 1.
Paul has had a number 1 album in each of the last 4 decades, whether with The Jam, The Style Council or as a solo artist. His wife Hannah appears on it as does his daughter Leah and son Mac. What's more he has a ready supply of future collaborators; he recently became a dad again to twins John Paul and Bowie. I loved The Jam from the star t- I remember John Peel playing 'In The City' and thinking 'I have to record that!'. So I waited by the radio with the cassette on pause, play and record for days! Somewhere, I still have the tape and if I ever own a cassette player again, it'll be on and turned up loud.
And today,we do INVISIBLE oldies. Been meaning to do this for a few days, ever since the Haywood Gallery in London opened their exhibition on 'invisibility and emptiness'. It features invisible ink drawings, an empty plinth that Andy Warhol once stood on and a piece of paper an artist stared at for 5 years. "This is the best exhibition you'll never see" said the director Ralph Rugoff. Well hooray for Ralph and INVISIBILITY it is then.
Have an organised and efficient Tuesday (ha!), see you after 5

We’ve still got a bit of sun on the edge of East Anglia but I think it’ll fade fast. Congrats to yesterday’s menshees (and OSMs) – heard bits and pieces of the show but wasn’t on-line as I was determined to catch-up with ironing and various bits and pieces of housework I’d ignored in favour of sunbathing at the weekend....
Suzieee – an unbelievable feat in that heat from your nearest and dearest. I feel ill just thinking about it!
I do love Paul Weller and Stanley Road in particular has been played over and over again in the last decade or so. Looking forward to tonight’s live set.

Still dry here so that's good news. Watching a bit of the French Open while I do some planning for next term: 3 Brits on court today and early success for Heather Watson is great news.
Need to try and get myself motivated for doing something constructive this afternoon .... Or possibly not ;)

I promised an occasional update on Mr's Worm Cafe - it's seems to be doing fine. He keeps adding chopped up kitchen waste and crushed egg shells and the compost level is rising. It will soon be time to add the next layer and check if there is any liquid in the base to be used as a fertilizer.

Harry - My mister did a degree in fine art back in the 90s, and we regularly had these kind of discussions about modern art. I could certainly see the value to some things, not necessarily monetary value, but in making folk stop and think, and by challenging conventions. But other things classed as modern art, I struggled to get anything out of at all. I think I've mentioned before, the exhibit I went to to 'showcase' the mister's fellow students' work. Where I was subjected to a short film of someone 'defiling' a trifle... Yes, I certainly struggled to see any artistic value in that!
It is very strange how much we will pay for things that have been signed, or otherwise handled by a famous person. I've never been an autograph hunter, although I will confess to having a personalised signed picture from David Tennant. I didn't pay anything for it though, he did it for free.

I once went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. I'd seen loads of Jackson Pollack in books and could never understand what all the fuss was about; a seemingly random scattering of splodges and drops of paint ............... and then you see one 'up close and personal' ............. my God! I was just gobsmacked and I've no idea why. The paintings simply induce a visceral reaction. Remarkable.
I went to see the Magritte exhibition in Edinburgh in 2001(?) and that had a similar effect. One made me cry; such loneliness was heartbreaking.
Perhaps the defiling of trifle would have a similar effect but for totally unrelated reasons ;0)

I agree about Jackson Pollack, I have only seen one example of his work, but it had more effect on me than I thought it would.
I found, to my surprise, that I was affected by quite a lot of modern art. It's easy to be dismissive of it, but if you really open your mind, and consider the concepts behind the pieces, it can be very rewarding.

#83 I really don't get why people pay for autographs, or indeed collect autographs of people they've never met. To me an autograph is just a souvenir of the occasion when you've met a famous person and while it's nice to own a book signed by the author I wouldn't bother unless they have signed it for me personally. And yes I know, Harry, that that makes the book less valuable! But I don't think that any of the books I've had signed by their authors are ever likely to be collectors' items anyway...

For anyone into birds, from the weekend at a race circuit near me!!!! I hope this Oystercatcher's nest and eggs stays safe and that she doesn't wander across from where it is positioned, into the path of motorbikes and sidecars hurtling past, a couple of feet away, (once they've done a lap and thin out) at over 150mph!!! It's on our local race circuit and the weekend's meeting was the first since the middle of April, so it was probably deserted and very quiet when she laid her eggs.

This is how close the bikes and sidecars whizz past.... the nest is between the tyre-wall and the white line nearest the back of the picture!!

Imagine the noise of this lot hurtling a few feet from your nest... poor thing!

Our next meeting is the middle of June and I guess the eggs will have hatched by then so I hope the parents and chicks will remain safe!

I think I'm quite a fan of Modern Art - love going to Tate Modern whenever possible and up until a couple of years ago, usually managed to visit the Turner Prize short list exhibits at Tate Britain on the Embankment even though 's gladly take up arms against the disenfranchisement of the over 50s. How very dare they?
However, in modern art - I prefer what we used to call 'sculpture' - especially the multi-media exhibits or installations- to a 2-dimensional 'painting' in a frame hanging on a wall. I'm still way too impressed by classical and skilful artistry and portraiture to be truly moved by splodges of colour, etc.
As an example - my abiding memory of Musée Picasso in Paris - always his sculptures.
However, in either case, I still prefer to having something tangible to look at/see in order to form an opinion ... all this empty space stuff is a complete p*sstake.
Someone's havin a larf.

#87 Deebee, as I understand it, and I've spoken to a lot of people who collect signed books, the signature proves that the author has held the book. It's no longer just a mass produced item but an artefact that has been handled by the artist and is imbued with a unique quality as the signature is never the same. I don't get it either. I'd have thought that reading the book, allowing the author to speak with you directly, unmediated, was enough.*
But, isn't that the question that the empty plinth addresses: why isn't the place someone has stood as desirable as something they have held?
*NB: I may not understand it but I'll happily charge you extra if an author has written their name in it :0)

#90 Harry - The plinth thing is making me recall the forth plinth 'One and Other' Antony Gormley installation, that they had going in Trafalgar Square. That was an interesting concept, and it's a shame it only ran for 100 days.
