Someone made the point on twitter, and it was retweeted by SimonWard [thanks] that the motto 'Inspire a Generation' was coined back in 2005, during the time of the Olympic bid - to promote sport. They then say that a whole school generation has passed, mostly untouched by it.



Does anyone here know anyone who is competing in any way, shape or form?



I know someone who is dancing in the opening ceremonial part.

I don't know anyone competing or taking part in any way personally.



I think golf* is in next time around, or the one after that, so at that point I might be able to say that Tom Lewis was my nephew's partner in the Panshanger juniors' team if he gets selected.



*Although like tennis it's completely ludicrous that golf is going to be in the Olympics. If winning the gold medal isn't the pinnacle of their career the sport shouldn't be there in my opinion.

#66 Katy - that's a great point. As the parents of kids at a London school, I can report they are spectacularly untouched by the whole thing. Which makes me rather sad, as it should be a major event for them. But the cynicism around not getting any tickets (we applied for 10 events), being told to stay away from the park if you don't have tickets, the transport system going into meltdown etc etc etc, means they are actually not really interested. In fact, we've put our house up for rent for 4 weeks for an exorbitant sum with the local agent, and we're more excited about the possibility of it paying for an amazing holiday so we can escape!



(It pains me to report, we haven't even set eyes on the new stadium or Olympic park - it might as well be on the other side of the world)

On the subject of the Olympics - is anyone else watching 2012? I love it; the writing is so funny and clever, and I suspect a lot of the time, some of the things they do/say actually happen in the planning areas!

Olympic torch passes directly in front of my shop on 21 June (I think!); should be within 5 metres (if that) and I won't even have to move. I may have to turn around, though :-)



I'm bored with the Olympics already. I firmly believe there should be no team sports or anything that requires any mechanical assistance (no bikes, bats, or boats; and, definitely no guns or bows); just running, jumping, throwing, and swimming.



#76 Zoe, I recorded it and it's one thing I'm looking forward to watching.



I made a decision recently and, apart from rugby, I'm not watching any live television. I have Sky+ so I can record all the programmes I might like to see and, if I haven't watched them within a week, I delete them. Since making the decision I've re-discovered chatting with my wife (I do like saying that!); reading for pleasure; and, listening to music with the lights off.



I can highly recommend it.

#76 Zoe - I, too,enjoyed PB on Later with Jools. Looking forward to more of it and him on Friday. Have also been rather impressed by The Maccabees for a while.

The mother of one of the women's hockey players - who has been interviewed by Matt (the hockey player that is, not her mum!) - worked at my kids' secondary school, may still do for all I know.



How long is the Olympics actually going to be on for? I think we're going to be away on hols for at least some of it.

Re the Olympics - I've taught a couple of the competitors; a swimmer and an athelete (hurdles) and one of the potential hockey players is the husband of a friend. I'm quite excited about it, but would watch anyway, I get quite caught up in it.



HtS- I like your idea - I don't watch a lot of live TV as I go to bed early and most dramas/things of interest are on after 9.00!

Hello again all.



My friend arrived for lunch armed with a Chinese takeaway and a bottle of red - most civilised!! Certainly warmed us up after the horrible cold wet weather!



I don't know anyone who has anything to do with the Olympics but.......... I did teach the boy who had his hand cut off and reattached in 'Holby City' last night. He was late for school every day and had to go to the school office to order his dinner as the registers had always gone by the time he arrived! ( At this point, may I say I don't usually watch the programme but did on this occasion to watch one of my old 'babies'!)



I know people who live around here but work in London are not looking forward to the Games as they have to travel on the train line which goes through Stratford and the Olympic Park. Hopefully, more trains will be laid on so they can continue with their day to day life. We live in hope.................

A gorgeous warm, sunny day so the dogs and I have had a lovely walk along the beach and enjoyed a Magnum ice cream, my treat for having cut the grass after lunch.



I wonder if Sal has managed to get back from Guernsey yet... it's a long way to go bird-watching, so I hope she's seen some spoonbills during her visit!

#77 Katy - no, I'm not on *that* side of town, but in the leafy SW 'burbs. Transport to Stratford has definitely been improved - it's now on 5 lines including the super speedy Central and Jubilee from Waterloo. The agents are marketing it as "an easy 2 hour door-to-door journey". Alternatively, visitors could fly from most of Europe in less time!

Don't have any links with any Olympians. The torch will be passing within a mile of my house but I won't be anywhere close at the time. I think that any subjective "sport" e.g. diving, gymnastics should be removed. Was going to say I like a gold medal outcome to be clear cut but having seen some of the footie stuff at the weekend I think my argument needs further defining ;-).



Oi, NSRJohn, what's wrong with Norway B vs Fiji! Having seen a bit of the Norwegian league, I can't wait ;-).



Off to go back & watch the OFAH clips. One of my favourite progs.

#91 Florence - yes, she is one his faves. I think he likes Banks of the O-hi-o. I bet he's lurking in Reception and hoping to share the lift with her (not a euphemism).



As an innocent lad watching Grease, I remember ONJ's transformation at the end of the film wearing those leather trousers, and getting quite overcome (also not a euphemism)



Also hope Sal gets home OK, although there are worse places to be stuck than Guernsey.

To add to the congestion, Stobbarts have bought Southend Airport and there are now direct flights going in and out of there from mainland Europe, Ireland and Jersey with a new railway station built on the Stratford Line for direct access to the Olympic Park. People around here could make a fortune renting their houses for the fortnight/month whatever it is. The jouney time from here is about 40 mins I think.

#89 A friend of ours is *sort of* related to ONJ and met her a few years ago when he was researching his family tree. He said she was very nice...

NSRJohn (again), I am passing through Heathrow to Kings X and on to Cambridge for the Cambridge FF on Olympic opening weekend. Dreading that journey. Just as well I have a fab friend waiting at the end of the line for me. Who thought it would be a good idea to have the 2 events on the same weekend? Did no-one check? I am a bit disconnected from all things Olympian and didn't make the connection until I tried to book a hotel in London and almost fainted at the prices being quoted.

Has anyone been on the little railway down at Dymchurch? I intruduced hubbs n cherub to it last year when we stayed at Camber Sands. Twas my 3rd time riding the rails. Hubbs has been keen since to write a story involving Romney Marsh.
