57 Channels...

Simon Mayo|08:06 UK time, Wednesday, 4 April 2012

Whoah there young bloggers! Much panda-based enthusiasm yesterday as we hurtled through those tunes. It got a little steamy in there for a moment! Still it was a good story and the Marvin Gaye sounded terrific I thought. Let's see what we can do today...

No snow on the estate but the gentle and reassuring hum of the central heating system working on full. April was always like this of course and I have (not so pleasant) memories of waking up in my parents caravan in the New Forest snow, the condensation having frozen inside and lighting the gas stove to warm the place up. You learnt great bladder control in those circumstances.

This warm office feels fine to me now but a show needs to be done and we welcome Michael Grade to talk TV. He's got a new series on Radio 2 which started on Wednesday looking at the history of television. And who better? He's the only man to run the BBC, Channel 4 and ITV, a man steeped in the world of showbiz. With Bernard Delfont and Lou Grade as uncles, his path was set, entering the TV world in 1973 having already been a roadie for The Shadows and representing Morecambe and Wise! Hearing him tell the story of TV here and in the US is great fun-he regularly knows more about the shows in question than the stars themselves! Michael Grade or Baron Grade of Yarmouth as we may be pleased to call him, on from 6.

So inevitably it's TELEVISION oldies please to take us through to 7o'clock. The joys (and otherwise) of the box, in song. Thanks.

Have a well-wrapped and sure-footed Wednesday, see you after 5

  • Comment number 22.

Morning all – well the Sopwith Camel of Yorkshire Airways cannot possibly take off fro Leeds-Bradford Airport. We are practically snowbound! I think that justifies an explanation. The Cleckhuddersfax Clatterer got me into work but this April snow has me thinking back to the mid-seventies when it did this quite regularly.

Yes the sun always shines on TV and radio!

  • Comment number 23.

    #3 - Mo - good choice (Morten Harkett - sigh.....swoon)

But the only song whizzing around my head this morning is:

VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR - THE BUGGLES

Reminds me of a rather difficult school exchange trip to France - it was only when I and my French host realised that we both knew all the words that we began to get on! (I wasn't brave - always got homesick - I would never have made an Arctic explorer)

BUT, we know that radio is still going very strong which is good news - yippeee!

Had a read back just now of yesterday's blog - made me giggle at the thought of so many people squished onto the naughty step! Hope that the pandas got on well together.......

Have a good day - I hope that not too many bloggers are snowbound x

  • Comment number 25.

    Hi Simon and everyone

Agreed! it did get a but steamy on here yesterday.

Snow here and wind ....not sticking as wet on floor. I remember it snowed in April in 1977 when I went with my nan to see my Aunt in hospital after giving birth to my cousin.

Also tweeted MADNESS's MY GIRL for the line 'I like to stay in and watch TV every now and then'

Would like to 2nd/3rd Sound and Vision by David Bowie too..

I'm thinking that A-ha's THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV' is a shoe-in, surely?

    NEW CONTRACT LANDED!

Had a call at 9am, interesting role, no interview required, start 16th April. Rolling 3 month contract. Triple hurrah! I can now play in the veg garden to my hearts content for the next 12 days.

Talking of veg garden, my seedlings (broccoli, cabbage, lettuce and rocket) in the greenhouse seem to be dying. I am keeping them moist, talk to them, play them R2 - any ideas on what could be wrong with them?

Turn On Tune In Cop Out - Freakpower (which whilst we're on the vague thread of misheard lyrics was always a source of debate: do they sing "e-tabs, whirling through my mind"?)

    CROSSROADS - CREAM

  • Comment number 49.

#45 Alex G, great news on the contract! Chuffed for you :0)

As for your veg, are you over-watering? Are all your plants in the greenhouse dying? Or just a few?

  • Comment number 50.

#45 Well done Alex - great news!

Re. the greenhouse - the seedlings could be over-heated? I noticed that some of mine had wilted too. I wondered about putting something over the top of the seed trays to keep out the sun, but won't bother now! I'm sure some of our 'green-fingered' bloggers will have the correct answer!

  • Comment number 51.

#50 Tortie, good point, you could be right there.

Alex, I would have thought down there in the balmy south you'd be OK growing all those things outdoors in April. Just move them into the greenhouse overnight if a frost if forecast.

    Blue Peter - Mike Oldfield

    Coffee and TV - Blur

The Sun always shines on TV - Aha

Whats the frequency Kenneth - REM

  • Comment number 53.

#48, 50, 51 - Thanks Harry and Tortie. I don't think it is too much water - I am just misting rather than getting the watering can out. Could well be too warm in there - I am opening the vent but it is really warm in there.

On the good news front, the rain last night has encouraged the leeks to show their faces - another hurrah!

  • Comment number 54.

#53 Alex, if you're just 'misting' it sounds like not enough water. If I were you, I'd give them a good water and move them outside for the day.

  • Comment number 55.

#44 The Jam? Yes please, good choice!

    #45 It's shock??!

Sudden heat and sun then a distinct lack of sun/heat - my seedlings that appeared last week have died...I should have heeded the old saying about 'not casting a clout until May is out' ho hum

ps well done on the job - and with a lovely Easter break to enjoy before it too!

  • Comment number 56.

#55 Suziee, 'not casting a clout until May is out' is all very well but the May IS out in my garden - the blackthorn has been in flower for about 10 days now. No idea what the cold snap will have done to it.

  • Comment number 62.

    Morning all

Late again, and so many fine choices made, so will have to put on my turbo-charged thinking cap to find something new. I'm liking Sound and Vision.

Alex - great news on the contract. And re the seedlings, I'm no expert, but....I think a mist sprayer might be causing the problems. You need to get the water into the ground - if you spray the leaves with mist, and they're in a greenhouse, the droplets act like a magnifying glass on the leaves and fry them. At least, I think I heard that somewhere before..

No rain here yet. But there's a nip in the air.

*rummages in attic for thermally insulated thinking cap*

  • Comment number 63.

#45 Congratulations on the contract Alex!! I'm absolutely no help re the seedlings I'm afraid - I plant things, sometimes they grow, sometimes they don't... my instinct would be to agree with the comments that they may have got a bit too warm.

#57 Looking foward to hearing your review of Gretchen Peters, Ken. She's one of those names that seems to be in the ascendant at the moment.

  • Comment number 68.

#63 Plants die when I have to look after them.

In my student days the house contained some plants of, let's say, a medicinal nature. The others disappeared off to Europe in the summer expecting they'd be tended. I was only in the house for a couple of days each fortnight. One day to sign on and the next day to receive the cheque before heading back home to play golf. Rinse and repeat - my movements, not the plants!

The plants were ex-plants by the time they returned at the end of September :-)

  • Comment number 69.

Congratulations Alex for your job! Well done!

Did your seedlings get a bit 'leggy' with all the sunshine we had last week? It could just be that they grew too fast and keeled over when the cooler weather came. Also can you water them from the base (in a tray), then they can take up how much water they need.

Off to ELH - RA has arrived so off we go!

Ken, enjoy the concert tonight. I look forward to hearing all about it.

Autumn Gale, St Andrews is a beautiful part of the country - lovely beaches, little shops and cafes. Make sure you go and see the bottle dungeon too. Scary.

What a difficult theme today and I think you've come up with some great choices. Hope to heart Sound and Vision in the selection ;))

  • Comment number 73.

AG, enjoy your day in St Andrews. One of the coldest places in Britain I reckon. Certainly one of the most exposed on the beach. And one of the most beautiful. I spent many a childhood Sunday there and have great memories of a school trip aged about 11.

    Hello all,

Sorry for absinthe, it's been a terrible week here. We found out at the back end of last week that my eldest brother who lives in New Zealand was in hospital for tests. He had terrible lower back pain and was generally feeling unwell. We feared that the cancer that he had been in remission from for over 15 years might have returned. He went downhill so rapidly that the Doctors didn't have time to get any test results back before he passed away on Saturday. I am flying out to New Zealand this Saturday for the funeral next week so I obviously won't be around for a while.

I don't want to bring the blog down with my sad news but wanted to come on to ask a favour really. I would like to attempt a reading at the funeral and I know several of you poppets are poetry fans. If any of you know of a poem or piece of prose that could be read as an uplifting memorial to a much loved brother I would really appreciate you passing it on to me.

I popped in yesterday and read some of your antics and for a little while the sadness was replaced with genuine smiles... a tonic as always, thank you.

#79 Jilly -so sorry to hear your sad news - condolences and hugs winging your way.

Don't know if this is any good to you, just replacing the "She's" with 'He's":

    She is Gone

You can shed tears that she is gone, Or you can smile because she lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back,

Or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,

Or you can be full of the love that you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,

Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she is gone,

Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back,

Or you can do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

#79 Jilly, so sorry for your sudden sad news - glad tho if the panda antics made you smile for a while.

My Mum read this poem out at my Dad's funeral (I know, she's a brave woman) - it is quite appropriate:

As his was a sudden death too, so easy to still think of him as around for a long time afterwards as we had no chance to prepare for his going.

New Zealand is a long was to go, hope you can stay for more than a couple of days, before you have to turn around and come back.

Jilly, I am so sorry to hear about your brother. I guess the only comfort is that he went quickly, although it must be a dreadful shock to you and your family.

A poem that I love is 'Do not stand at my grave and weep' by Mary Elizabeth Frye.

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.

I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

    Do not stand at my grave and cry;

I am not there. I did not die.

Also, I don't know what if any religious beliefs you have, but John 14 verses 1-4 from the New Testament gave me great comfort when my Dad passed away.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

Can anyone remember the quote that Simon tweeted earlier this year when a friend of his died? I thought at the time that it was really apt and poignant, but I'm afraid I've completely forgotten what it was.

Oops - not sure what I did to upset the Modders. My post was Christina Rossetti's poem "Remember".

Alex, that is odd that your post was modded and mine and Tortie's quotations weren't... The Christina Rossetti poem is a lovely one too.

#94#95 I did wonder if mine would be modded. I don't know why yours was Alex - they're all just poems, not advertising or links! I agree, it's one of my favourites too.

Did I tell you Rosie ate too much cat mint on Monday? She's still not fully with it. That'll learn her - just say no.
