#41 Ken, I found said article on t'internet. Don't agree. I didn't really have any sort of opinion about Lori up until the final 10 mins or so of the finale when Rick was talking about Shane. Not realistic to give Rick the cold shoulder and treat him like HE was the monster when we all know that Shane clearly had a screw loose.

Simon, your blog brings out the bookseller in me: "RL Stevenson fans have waited 131 years for a new Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver story"? Hmmmm, I think not. What about Björn Larsson's "Long John Silver"? Or, Francis Bryan's "Jim Hawkins and the Curse of Treasure Island"?

#33 & #41 Yes, I know that Lori is very unpopular amongst the Walking Dead fans, and last week, Gale Anne Hurd (one of the producers) did post a few things on Twitter in defence of Sarah Wayne Callies (who plays Lori) She said that the actress was one of the loveliest people she knew, and she felt bad about all the abuse she had been getting. I must say, whether you like a character or not, sending abuse to the actor portraying that character, can never be right. Lori isn't exactly my favourite character either, but I can agree with the writer's take on it, that's she is confused and angry with herself over what happened, but she is projecting all that on to Rick.



Nice sunny day again, but as the mister pointed out, we've had a few years of these early taste of summer in March/April, only to have rubbish actual summers... Like I said yesterday, I'm a glass half empty kind gal! ;D

Good morning from a sun-kissed Horsforth. As a Galley Slave on a 26ft boat on Windermere I have enough trouble with pirates. They are forever shouting 'Pieces of cake' at me. My long-handled no.3 skillet usually sees them off. I'm off planning a sailing trip to the parts of Scotland that R.L.Stevenson and his LIGHTHOUSE building FAMILY frequented. so:

Crikey, I have just heard the news-reader on TV say the Post Office is to put up the cost of postage stamps by 30% and 39%, which seems rather a hefty jump, especially when you can't depend on first class delivering the next day!! A friend posted me a card with piece of fabric inside it, first class, from Kendal on Friday and I got it this morning... and surely that's a second-class delivery!



Seemingly next month it's going to cost 60p to send a first-class letter and 50p for second-class, which sounds even worse in old money... 12/- and 10/- and wouldn't be quite so bad if next day or two days delivery could be guaranteed!

I can't believe no-one's suggested

To be fair, I think it's perhaps more of an aspiration for first class to be delivered the next day - although it usually is in my experience.



If you want to guarantee next day delivery then that really does cost (it used to be £3.50 - it may well be more now).



For my own part, I think of the number of letters I used to send out up to a few years ago and compare that with the number of emails I now send instead. Financially, I'm up - and Royal Mail are down. Hence the large price rise, I guess.

Apologies. Re-reading my last post, the final paragraph makes it look as if my reduction in sending letters is solely responsible for Royal Mail's woes. Of course, what I meant was that my experience is no doubt the same all over - more people sending more emails than letters.

Just had a customer in who told me I had beautiful books.



"Unfortunately", he said, "I've given up buying books for Lent"



I told him that it was actually quite fortunate because I've given up selling them for Lent.

...and of course I may not be up financially when broadband costs etc. are taken into account. Hmmm. I thought that made some sense when I first typed it...



In any event, I find myself sending fewer letters and I'm sure that is the same for others.

Irregular Blogger Andrew, why should I have to pay £3.50 to post a letter when there is '1st class' post, said to be 'next day delivery'? I don't mind paying extra for something valuable or posting an important document... but not for a birthday card, although I generally post birthday cards early, just to make sure they arrive.

Yesterday, coincidentally, was the anniversary of my first meeting the Mr - a date I normally forget, and he remembers. Hence I came home last night and found on the dressing table something I had NOT even SEEN at 7.30am - a card and the new Paul Weller CD...loving it so far....

Good time for an enterprising company to set up new 'post shops' where one can send a card/letter - it happens with parcel carriers, surely the writing is on the wall for the PO?

Our one daily delivery comes at 2pm ish, no-way you could run a business on that basis from home or an office.

#78 I have no problems with people browsing; I have a couple of comfy chairs so as people can sit and read the things if they want. As long as a small percentgae of my visitors buy, I'm happy.



However, I am a little unclear on the etiquette: am I supposed to thank people when they tell me with such glee that they're escaping without buying?

I was told about this time yesterday that I had to care for Mrs Snapper for forever ................ anyone know how long forever minus one day is? :0)

#79 There's more chance of me winning the Euromillions two weeks on the trot than there is of anyone setting up a rival service to Royal Mail that will deliver domestic mail from anywhere in the country to anywhere in the country cheaper than Royal Mail.



The authorities in their wisdom opened up the market, but in a way which left RM with their hands cuffed behind their back i.e. they are still obligated to offer a uniform price for mail regardless of source address, delivery address, and distance between the two. They also allowed the competition to enter in such a way that they could cream off the low-labour trunking activities (collect in bulk from large corporate posters, carry it in bulk to the nearest RM operation) and dump it into the RM network for delivery (labour intenstive). At regulated prices.



Nobody in their right mind would want to take on that universal commitment. You certainly won't be posting from Lands End to John O'Groats for 60p with any other provider of a full end-to-end service. Nobody is interested in anything other than business-to-business stuff that's easiest to handle from end to end.



The government and the nation has got the RM they deserved. It was profitable in the early 80s but tied by having to pass surplus cash back to the government rather than being free to invest in its own changing future in a competitive market. Success goverments basically have loused it all up.

#84 Ironically RM had the second biggest private IT network in the country (behind BT I think) in the early 80s but it's mission was related to text and packages with text being in the printed form rather than via bits and bytes! And the Post Office Act prevented (may still prevent, I'm not sure?) it using anything more than spare capacity for stuff outside the traditional RM core activities, which effectively prevented it diversifying into the newer communication media beyond tinkering around the edges.



So it's saddled with a universal price obligation in a labour-intensive old communication medium.

#83 - Is an excellent post which explains the situation very well.



There is (as I understand it) already competition in the market - at least for volume, business customers. TNT 'deliver' letters, for instance. However, they still use the Royal Mail network to make the 'final mile' delivery. As has already been very well described, no company could viably set up a delivery to actually compete with RM.



I used to live in America and the idea of actually having mail delivered to your door (through your door) was unheard of. we collected our letters from the post office in town.



60p to get a letter or card anywhere in the country, generally the next day. Is it really such bad value? It may look that way because we view it in the context of what we have had before. Perhaps we have been spoiled.



One last thought. The price rise doesn't come into effect until the end of next month. Buy your stamps now.

If I say Good Afternoon Poppeteers, who'll know who I am. Yikes! Just been in a meeting and 4 people I don't know asked me if it was me who gets the shout outs on Radio 2! I think they were meaning POTPs but given that they are probably listening to Simon's show on their drive home, I don't want to take any chances of being rumbled for a choon chase during the day.

And one of my favourite wasting the day away pursuits is browsing around a lovely bookshop. However, I have very little willpower, Lent or not, so nearly always ending up with a purchase or three!

Afternoon all!



Power went off at 9.30 and has only just come back on. Despite the laptop being fully charged, I had failed to realise that the broadband would go off, leaving me internet-less. And the landline went as well, so had no phone for job hunting.



So, I have thinned the radishes, planted the broad beans (and did stakes and string in the hope the seeds will grow), planted the perpetual spinach, resucitated the sprouting broccoli that had gone limp and generally played in the veg patch. Disaster was avoided by Ziggy bringing a camping stove so coffee was still on.



Harry, SO pleased you had a lovely day yesterday! Did laugh at your reply to your "customer".
