Not Panicking

Simon Mayo|09:29 UK time, Friday, 30 March 2012

And a very good morning to you too. Haven't queued for pasties, petrol or stamps (as I suspect, is true for most people) so feeling I am not part of the current journo-crazed world. My tank is half-full, my fridge has sausages in and I'm not planning my Christmas cards just yet. I am, in every sense, keeping calm and carrying on.

Nigel's Jerk Kitchen was terrific last night with no, shall we say, repercussions. Which, given the head-blasting nature of his marinade, is really quite something. The temptation of some easy, nice stuff in a jar is real but if the time presents itself, I too will be inviting people to stick their fingers in my sauce and say nice things. I shall let you know.

A 2 show day today with hundreds of films out and much to discuss on the film show with MK who has just returned from being Elvis. Recording an album with his skiffle band The Dodge Brothers in Sun Studios might just have turned his head completely. If he's wearing gold lamé we are all in trouble. Meantime, Director Werner Herzog will be in to discuss a new documentary film called Into The Abyss about 2 Americans on death row.

Thence to R2 Central and 2 hours of party tunes for a raucous ARF, kicked off by your carefully selected, focus-grouped, taut and noisy opening song selection. Remind me...

Have cheery and encouraging Friday, see you after 2 and 5.

@Ken Jude, can you give me a clue (or better still, a link) on how to find the acoustic "Comfortably Numb" you mentioned on yesterday's blog? I've searched using the obvious keywords but I can't find it.

    Morning all!

The Hoffs household is just surfacing. Master Hoffs didn't return to the fold until 1am - much delayed by border controls apparently. Hope it was nothing to do with his shopping - he arrived bearing gifts bought in the market yesterday, these include: two sausages for his big brother, a large pot of mustard for his Dad and a frog for Mini-Hoffs that when squeezed, its eyeballs pop out! Anyway, much yawning today..

Its been a long time since we were all under one roof together and we are all really looking forward to the weekend. Mini-Hoffs has his last day at his old school today and I would imagine there will be a few tears at 3.30pm. Then we are off to a 40th birthday party tomorrow night - lots of curry and dancing. Can't wait.

I like Viking Mo's suggestions at #4 - any of those would be a perfect ARFO - but I'm going to throw a firecracker into the melting pot and run, fast.....

    My ARFO suggestion is:

    WIG WAM BAM - SWEET

    See you later x

  • Comment number 14.

PS Earlier this week, Simon, you announced that the opening song would be The Gibson Brothers and I thought, maybe this week it won't be 'Cuba' again. Wrong!!

Please Drivetime team, they also recorded a very fine tune, 'Mariana', it would be great to hear that again. INFACT it would make a very good ARFO, so how about

    MARIANA by THE GIBSON BROTHERS

    ;-) x

  • Comment number 15.

Morning all .. pleased to say that i am another not yet suffering from the petrol/pasty/postage panics ..

Please may I request PROUD by M People as today's ARFO .. I am singing it with my community choir at the moment and had forgotten what a mighty fine tune it is ..

Wishing you all a Fab Friday x

Dougal,as I've asked for The Temptations early 70s vintage I feel that AFRO is just as appropriate...they had some decent 'fros in those days.

    Morning All,

    How's about a bit of

Are you gonna go my way - Lenny Kravitz.

Perhaps if the news EMPHASIZED that there isn't a strike yet, people wouldn't panic quite so much...maybe.

#3 - Hts, could you remind me what #FF is, please? Ta muchly.

  • Comment number 20.

    Good morning everyone

I hope all the poorly people are feeling much better today!

Johno, wouldn't it be sooo good to hear a Friday opener by The Saw Doctors...

failing that, I wouldn't mind hearing any of these, please Simon...

    FISHERMAN'S BLUES ~ The Waterboys

BORN TO RUN ~ Bruce Springsteen

ALL DAY AND ALL OF THE NIGHT ~ The Kinks

YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET ~ Bachman-Turner Overdrive

ROLL AWAY THE STONE ~ Mott the Hoople

  • Comment number 21.

Mornin' all...hope everyone is well. My time on here has been all too brief lately, but sometimes that thing called work gets in the way... ;-)

My suggestion for the ARFO? After this week, I reckon:

    The Smiths - Panic.

Sums up the week nicely I think. Not so sure about the "hang the DJ" lyrics though... ;-)

    TTFN.

  • Comment number 22.

Good Morning One and All :)

I must admit that we topped our car up with diesel yesterday, just in case... It's the school holidays after today, and we rely on the car for our twins. Stamps and pasties though, are not really lacking or wanting here.

My (rocky) ARFO suggestions for today are...

ACE OF SPADES - MOTORHEAD (sorry for the missing umlaut, I don't know how to get one on my fruity thingy)

BAT OUT OF HELL - MEATLOAF

    CRAZY NIGHTS - KISS

HOT IN THE CITY - BILLY IDOL

I need to go and lie in a darkened room for a while now...

  • Comment number 23.

#19 JPA, just something I suggested a few back. On Twitter, on Fridays, they have a special tag #FF (I'm not sure what it stands for, perhaps someone else can enlighten us) where you recommend followers.

I thought it might be a good idea if we had our own #FF on Fridays where we tell our fellow bloggers what music we've listening to in the week. I suggested it as a way of finding new music or of being reminded of older stuff.

  • Comment number 24.

Good morning all - beautiful day again apart from green boxes!!

    ARFO from the outgoing Queen

LETS TWIST AGAIN by Chubby Checker

    Back to catch up.

  • Comment number 25.

    Morning all

No time to read back, so no idea what's going on.

Only one priority today (apart from buying petrol, stocking up on cheap 1st class stamps, eating cold pasties, and paying into the ISA if you have any money left) = enjoy the last day of "summer in March"!

And so to the ARFO. In the spirit of the keep-calm-and-carry-on, I shall "make do and mend" and shamelessly recycle my suggestions from last week. Which IMHO were rather fine:

    NEW ORLEANS - Gillan

    GOING UNDERGROUND - The Jam

REAL WILD CHILD or THE PASSENGER - Iggy Pop

    COUNTRY GIRL - Primal Scream

    I WISH - Stevie Wonder

    And if all else fails...

JOHNNY BE GOOD - Chuck Berry

    Onwards, upwards, outwards.

    JBG

  • Comment number 26.

#22 Zoe, unfortunately, so did a lot of people. You're as much a part of the panic as all the others. No doubt they all 'rely' on their cars more than anyone else, too.

I had to smile at the Tory minister who told people to fill up when they're down to half a tank instead of waiting until they're down to a third. What about the people, like me, who drive on a nearly empty tank all the time because we can't afford to have £80 worth of fuel sitting in the tank? I drive from one fuel warning to the next.

  • Comment number 27.

A random selection of upbeat, sunny day toons as my suggestions for the ARFO:

KISS by The Age of Chance

THE FUTURE'S SO BRIGHT I GOTTA WEAR SHADES by Timbuk3

KNOCK ON WOOD by Amii Stewart

    SONIC BOOM BOY by Westworld

    HOT STUFF by Donna Summer

#23 Good idea Harry. The Stevenage Football Club forum usually has a Friday Music thread (usually with a witty, pithy, irreverent or even completely irrelevant "sponsored by" in brackets), and also a Friday Classical Music thread. People just say what they've been listening to, and especially on the classical thread it's encouraged people to go and listen to stuff they haven't heard before.

#FF is what it says on the tin. It#s either Follow Friday or Friday Follow or some other variant of those two base words :-)

We could just have a #FMR on here or something similar for Friday Music Recommendation.

  • Comment number 30.

JBG, I was listening to the Daily Mayo podcasts from the beginning of the week last night. You should listen to Tuesdays. They don't include music or menshes usually but you were quite clearly there in amonsgt the Dermot interview.

#FF is Follow Friday on Twitter. A bit of fun for a Friday and a means of sharing good people to follow. Haven't been listening to much music this week other than a bit of ipod shuffle. Will put that right at the weekend and give the Zoe/Ken suggestion a go.

    Good morning again all,

    Another beautiful day dawns :)

#8 Snap! I too was trying to track this down after Ken's glowing accolades. A link would be lovely, please and thank you!

For the ARFO today I'd love to hear some...

SWEET SOUL MUSIC - ARTHUR CONLEY

    Thank you kindly Sir!

More garden chores today, got to make the most of the wall to wall sunshine.

    Have good days all.

  • Comment number 32.

#8 Harry, the Comfortably Numb link is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UsORvF5ygE from a search I just did for "comfortably numb acoustic bass" which worked. Not sure why it's a secure URL and can't test it from here as the video stream won't run in normal hours here, but it looks like that's the one. Jeff Donohoe and Mike Grimes are the names of the two guys making the videos.

  • Comment number 33.

Reasons to be glad I am an expat at the moment? Petrol, pasties, stamps and the good old British Public reverting to type. A strike cannot happen with less than 7 days notice. Surely most drivers will empty a tank within 7 days and will only have to go through all that stress again before a strike can actually take place. The government and the media have a lot to answer for.

    *steps off soapbox*

    x

  • Comment number 34.

Apparently a well known supermarket that has used Richard Hammond in it's advertising campaigns - amoungst other celebrities - gets its fuel from a different supplier to the ones who are threatening to strike, so won't be affected. Don't quote me though, as I only heard this third hand so it may be incorrect...

    ;o)

My arm is much better today, just a little stiff - the ibruprofen gel helped so thanks to those who suggested it!

    ~X~

  • Comment number 35.

#32 Thanks, Ken. I think knowing exactly what you're looking for helps a lot :-)

  • Comment number 36.

Morning all, well if I can drag my eyes away from watching the queue of cars actually standing on the Leeds Outer Ring Road waiting for petrol I would like to suggest:

TINA TURNER – WE DON’T NEED ANOTHER HERO

As the film it came from is strangely appropriate for today.

I’ll vote for anything chilli – the stepson, ‘Justin’ eats them raw & grows them in the front bedroom. I’ve told him about the Trees Can’t Dance Website – probably a bad mistake on my part.

Off early to make some pasties, thank goodness for Saint Delia. TTFN.

  • Comment number 37.

    #32 Ken, that's excellent..

And I love the first comment: "I didn't know William Shatner played bass" :-)

  • Comment number 38.

#23 & #26 Harry - As I understand it #FF on Twitter simply stands for 'Follow Friday' where Tweeters are encouraged to recommend interesting people to follow to their followers.

On the fuel panic - We would have been filling the tank up anyway in readiness for the school holidays, I just prompted the mister to do it sooner rather than later. I know that lots of other people either really do rely on their cars, or will claim to in any case. We wouldn't be able to take the twins anywhere, if we didn't have a (motability) car. It is very expensive to fill the tank up (£100 +) so we don't use it willy nilly, we walk where we can locally, and we make it last as long as possible.

  • Comment number 39.

Back again, having been to town and done the weekend shop at 7 o clock, thus ensuring a chance of getting a few items before 7000 weekend holiday makers descend.

Already at that time, they were queuing for fuel. But, they can only fill up once and if mine gets low, then I'll get some when the panic has died down, or else use the lawn mower fuel and get a goat!

Some great choices for the ARFO already, does the King or Queen get to keep the crown for a fortnight? Haven't looked at the schedule for next week yet.

Those of you that have given up things for Lent, and well done for doing so, must be seeing a hint of a glimmer now at the end of that very long tunnel. I too have given things up, but not through dedication and more of a long term thing, but tis getting easier.

A cool sea mist here at the moment, so as North facing, shall work in the back garden, where is it noticably a few degrees warmer. My car temperature guage thingy wotnot read 3c when I went in earlier, was a tad goose bumply.

ARFO, well my last chance before I hit the 50, so what the 'eck.....

*** Twilight *** by ELO, which I guess just isn't noisy, but I like it.

Back later to whoop whoop at spotting my first swallow of the year.

Optimistic as ever, its what keeps me going!

  • Comment number 40.

#30 Thanks Mo. I'll have a listen later at a more convenient time. Is that the bit where they were giving scores out of 100? Nice to see you back here, by the way.

  • Comment number 41.

#FMR So this week I've been listening to:

Kenny Wayne Shepherd - Trouble Is (lunchtime walk demanded some blue-rock guitar accompaniement)

The Band Perry - The Band Perry

Gretchen Peters - Trio (Recorded Live)

    ACDC - Highway To Hell

    Bob Harris Sunday show

    Ricky Ross' Another Country show

The Band Perry are probably a bit more commercial sounding country than I would generally buy, but I heard the session and chat on Bob's show a few weeks back and kinda fell in love with them playing in the stripped down format so bought the album, and really like it, hence going to see them as well. The single sold shedloads in America I believe. The record company here, in its wisdom, decided that the mandolin and and other country instruments needed replacing for the UK market as our ears aren't atuned to those instruments. So they are morons and the UK single is different. Fortunately both versions are on the album.

  • Comment number 42.

#38 Zoe, isn't that the problem? If everyone behaved as we normally do there would have been plenty of fuel for everyone. As it is, we're all ******ed!

  • Comment number 43.

Or is this noisy, fast, head nodding, keychanging, bopping AND cheery enough?

HERE COMES THE SUMMER - THE UNDERTONES.

  • Comment number 44.

If there was to be a quiet and tranquil opening to the show, this is what I would choose......https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO9Ild2cvdg

  • Comment number 45.

"They" being the record company of course, not the band who probably had zero influence on the decision!

  • Comment number 46.

OK, my #FF/#FMR music recommendation this week.

Did anyone see Transatlantic Sessions last Friday? Iain Morrison (someone new to me) played this, from the Skimming Stones, Sinking Boats album, on the show (it’s about 4 minutes in):

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b016ypnr/Transatlantic_Sessions_Series_5_Episode_6/

If it is no longer available, here is a different version on y*utube although the quality isn’t as good:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7oKekeEnII

Apparently, as well as being a fine singer-songwriter and guitarist, he’s also a master piper and there are clips on y*utube of him playing.

There are three albums on Sp*tify and are all worth a listen.

Ken, I am desperately trying to remember where I heard The Band Perry recently. Much was being made of the band name being "The Band Perry", not the band "Perry". Sounds a bit Steve Wrightish, doesn't it?

Some good ARFO tunes again today. Fingets crossed (another one from the blogpoppets dickers) for a blog crown retention.

#46 #FMR Haven't been watching the broadcasts of TS Harry as I have bought the DVD already so stopped after watching Ep 1. For glorious music, I don't think you can beat Sam Bush and Dirk Powell doing "Boats Up The River" which I think was on Episode 1. Also available on Youtube - those country instruments sound brilliant to me :-)

Missed the show last night. Mr P broke up from school, it was a beautiful evening so we decided to take a bottle of wine into the garden and enjoy the last rays of the evening. Well done to any bloggers who were "menshed".

I am a bit stumped for an ARFO this week so am going to pass. Some crackers suggested above.

I am hoping to get The Band Perry CD for my birthday. Enjoyed their interview on Steve Wright last week. Ken, record companies seem to "clean up" country music for the UK market. I know Shania Twain recorded different versions of her albums for the different markets.

Mr P filled the car up on Thursday. He always fills the car up on Thursdays.

What have we been listening to? Gretchen Palato still gets a nightly play. We are also listening to Pat Metheny, Sierra Hull and, having read "Just Kids" by Patti Smith, I am on a bit of a Patti Smith craze.

My #FF suggestion would be one mainstream and one definitely not:

    1. I bought mrs RP The Feeling's Greatest Hits for Xmas (ignoring a 1 star stinker of a review in Q mag). It is absolutely blinding. A rare greatest hits where there's barely any filler. Forgot how delicate as well as singalong they can be.

    2. Heard this on Bob's Saturday night show driving back from a disco: C.W. Stoneking's 'The Love Me or Die', the sound of a 1930's delta bluesman coming from the mouth of a 30-something white Aussie. As David Coleman possibly said: quite remarkable.

  • Comment number 61.

    Taut and noisy?

    JOEY RAMONE - Wonderful World

LOVIN' SPOONFUL - Summer In The City

JOE COCKER - You Can Leave Your Hat On (from Nine-and-a-Half Weeks soundtrack, and far, far superior to Tom Jones' version)

  • Comment number 62.

Apologies for just dashing in and out on an ARFO mission without any pleasantries. Life is well and truly getting in the way of blogging. Hope all lovely fellow bloggers are well.

Living in Bournemouth, I am having to fight off the pensioners to get petrol - or would do if I could be bothered to go and get some. Apparently, they are considering bringing in hoodies to keep the pensioners under control and paying them with hot pasties!

A couple of suggestions for ARF-

California by Phantom Planet (cause I better you aint never played it and it is good)

Cindy Incidentally by the Faces (just good ol' rock n roll)

    #65 #12 Mo, yes I said I was livid.

The lurgee has gone. I'm back at work and discovered that somebody 'forgot' to process payroll and that I hadn't been paid this month.

All sorted now though, so simmering down and looking forward to a week off, taking ladyBuzz out for lunches etc.

#49 I filled my Land Rover up at the weekend before any of this nonsense started, but my other car was running near to empty yesterday so I got some petrol on the way home. I drove onto the forecourt and luckily a car moved from a pump as I did so, and so I filled up. There wasn't much in the way of a queue at all.

Later in the evening, around 8:30, we went out to get a few things from a local shop in a small town. There were queues of about 15 cars in both directions for the petrol station. Madness.

I can't believe that people are being so panicky. There has been plenty of mention on the news of the fact that there will be at least 7 days notice of any strike action, so I really don't understand why the panic buying. It's like a load of frightened sheep following the leader.

  • Comment number 69.

A colleague has been telling me how when he filled up last night, because his tank was empty, there was a lady inside having a discussion with one of the cashiers because she had bought less than the minimum delivery of two litres. Her justification was that she couldn't get any more in her tank as she had filled up the night before...

For irony value I'd like to suggest

MADNESS - DRIVING IN MY CAR

Time to join in with the hordes - I'm off to panic buy Marmite.

#70 And probably used more than 2 litres getting to and from the petrol station. Almost choked on my coffee reading that.

cBzz (I like that), so glad you have been paid. You can enjoy your week off now.

OK, so there will be no strike over Easter so maybe a little calm can be restored.

I recall my mother stockpiling food and other supplies towards the end of 1999, "just in case". As it happened the Millennium Bug didn't quite reach apocalyptic proportions, so I lived on tuna during the first few months in my new flat in 2000! Saved me a fortune!

Oh, forgot to mention this one:

SINCE YOU BEEN GONE - Rainbow

Sal/MTF - somewhere up there ^, cba to look at the number.... This gorgeous weather is infectious - I can tell how happy it's making you feel

I'm still on the no-crisps-no-chocolate for Lent regime. Nearly gave up yesterday - and we're inventing invented a rule that says when April Fools day falls on Palm Sunday, Lent does not apply for the day. We'll see how much willpower is left on Sunday!

And as for #FFM (Friday Forward Music?), I've been listening to Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings. I think PSL would like it - it's revivalist motown/funk/soul - a bit like Amy Winehouse. Perfect for sunny days. But works on cosy winter evenings too.

#65 Mo I'm with you on not opening the links at work ;(

Just popped home at lunch time to panic eat my 2 sticks of celery and cream cheese and walked into a furnace. Mr W had gone out and left the HEATING on! Clearly he's panicking about the risk of snow on Monday.

I'm now panicking because I'm still hungry - luckily I've brought crisps with me - sorry John ;)

  • Comment number 76.

Wow! Now I know what you lot have been moaning about. MY FIRST GREEN BOX!!

I feel part of the gang now...not left out anymore watching in from the sideline!

I wonder if we'll look back fondly on the short hot Lent of 2012 reminiscing (sp?) about the panic buying and petrol shortages, as we did the long hot summers of the seventies when we had sugar, bread, fuel (again) and toilet roll shortages (yes, loo roll, now that would indeed create panic buying!!) as we were fearful of rising inflation then..... Circle of life!

PS I was VERY young in the 70's but remember very clearly my parents talking about it! ;-)

Hi Simon, team and blog buds,

Most likley a tad too late....

    The Beach Boys: 409

    The Doors: Break on Through

I filled up on Wednesday due to knee-jerk reaction while driving home listening to Radio 2 news. I've come to realize I drive more witha full tank of petrol. Perhaps false security thing going on or just not used to having so much petrol and get carried away. Off to do chores listen to Simon & Mark. Looking forward to the hearing what Herzog has to say.

John, yes you are right, I love this weather.

I've just been out grooming Dylan (the wabbit, naturally!) and have almost a bin bag full of lovely fur if anyone cares for it, at the present, the birds are picking it up and carrying it off to line their nests, how decadent! The rooks have different ideas and are landing on the poor horse over the road, who is 29 years old and are plucking her winter coat off in chunks. I dont think its bothering her, as she is still happily eating away.

Anyway, its taken until now, for it to really warm up as we have a rolling sea mist which is being a bit persistent at the moment.

How have you found 'giving up?' I think its easy to accidentally slip up. I baked a lovely apple and plum flaky pastry tart for Family last weekend and after dishing up, found myself scooping up the crumbs and aiming them towards my mouth. Yikes! - I did stop in time.

Right, back to the weeding, I dont think for the time of the year, I have ever come across, so much bindweed, ants, brambles and nettles.

On the other hand, the Lily of the valley is going to be in bloom well before May 1st, which is the traditional day to give to people.

OOps, bit of a waffle...... :)

Ok, the woman who bought less than the minimum 2 litres of motion lotion. I really hope they charged her* the full price for 2 litres of fuel.

I hope there is no panic buying with wine later. I haven't got any in yet.

#86 #90 Yes, it's disappointing there were no nominations for Drivetime. But they are not awards driven - they won't be too gutted... And as far as I know, the Confessions podcast is still number 1

    ;o)

So well done to Simon and Mark for the Wittertainment nomination. Shona, they haven't actually won the award (yet!) - that happens on the 14th May.

Did the BBC even submit Drivetime for consideration this year? I think putting the submission together is not a trivial matter so I doubt they submit every show for consideration.

  • Comment number 94.

#91 Deebee, I have special psychic powers and can see them collecting their award on 14th May ;) (Silly me).

  • Comment number 95.

#93 I didn't realise that, Ken. Maybe they didn't - although why wouldn't they? Anyway we know Drivetime is the best radio show around, and that's what matters...

#94 That's good to know - I'll look forward to it!

Good afternoon everyone - weather has changed a bit today. It was lovely when I first reported but has now clouded over and it's a bit chilly. Twas lovely while it lasted.

I listened back to the end of yesterdays DT and I got a mensh for Fool on the Hill too - really chuffed!

#39 -Sal - last time I was Queen (listen to me!!) and a muggle was picked for the ARFO, Katy said the crown had to go to them and who am I to argue? The crown is beautifully polished and sparkly and ready to be handed over.

Today has brought the following news ...

    * A woman got badly burnt decanting petrol between containers in her kitchen, whilst her cooker was on. Turns out that petrol is highly flammable...

    * There won't be a fuel strike over Easter after all...

Congratulations to Simon and Mark for the Wittertainment Sony nomination (full list of noms here https://www.radioacademyawards.org/news/awards-2012/sony-nominations-announced%21%21%21/ )

Today I've been listening to The Deep Dark Woods (lovely stuff) and now I've moved on to The Hunger Games soundtrack... I don't know if I'd recommend it yet, because I've only listened to The Civil Wars song, and their collaboration with Taylor Swift, so far. But so far, so good.

Kingdom Come - The Civil Wars

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWKRaZEJdzs&list=UUnuDrAYchkQUO6Ijs7VTFxw&index=26&feature=plpp_video

There are also songs by Neko Case, The Secret Sisters and The Carolina Chocolate Drops, amongst others.

I might be a bit sporadic with my blog posting over the next two weeks, what with it being the Easter hols, I might not have much time to spare.

  • Comment number 98.

#95 One good reason they might not submit everything could be that they're scrapping local radio stations and local programming, and on a wider basis strggling to fill all the TV hours they have available for broadcast. So as they're broke I think they'd struggle to justify spending money putting multiple shows from Radio 2 up against multiple shows from other BBC stations in a single category.

Of course I might be wrong and they submit everything :-)

  • Comment number 99.

Meant to say - thanks to JBG for the Sharon Jones recommendation. I love a bit of funk, and I like Amy Winehouse so I'll be checking her out.

#97 Zoe, I'll be thinking of you over the next couple of weeks - I know holidays aren't the easiest of times for you. Hope you'll be able to poop by from time to time.

I'm off home soon, and we're off down to Mum's this evening for the weekend. So I'll probably hear most of the show on the M25... I'll be listening out for a blogger ARFO king or queen, so good luck everybody!
