Monday, Tuesday er...

Simon Mayo|09:42 UK time, Thursday, 29 March 2012

I blame it on the bread. There must be something in the dough which made me forget what day it was. Yesterday's blog indicating it was Thursday and talking about Nigel's Jerk Chicken was clearly wrong. Not mentioning Dermot O'Leary was stupid. The Radio 2 nurse will be watching closely from now on. But Dermot was interesting I thought, and the Titanic programme 11.35pm-2-20am sounds a winning idea ( I should mention, before someone else does, that it's my brother Jonathan who dreamt it up in the first place. My sister, however is not involved).

So today really is Thursday and it really is Nigel's Jerk Chicken. But then we've been here before I feel...

Oldies please for APRIL FOOLS DAY. Mercifully it falls on Sunday so no radio tricks from us required but as this is the closest we get, let's do FOOLS and FOOLISHNESSin all it's guises. And that should so nicely.

Have a bold and decisive Thursday, see you after 5

APRIL, COME SHE WILL - Simon and Garfunkel.

A truly beautiful song, for an equally beautiful month, once we have got past the first that is.

My Nana was born on 1st April 1896, I guess that would make her 116 today. How far back can other blog poppets go back with memories of loved ones? I vaguely remember my great Grandmother who I am reckoning must have been born a good twenty years before that, but only vaguely. Whereas my Nana is still very much in my memory, even though it was 30 years ago that I last saw her.

  • Comment number 43.

Obviously, I cant go back with memories of 1896 (I'm only in my 40s after all!) I meant people that we remember, how far can we go back in terms of when they were born.

Coffee time (sorry to rub it in, Coffeebuzz - hope you feel better soon!) and after 10 minutes in the sun I'm ready for a blog catch-up.

I can't stand April Fool's day, or any kind of prank, micky-take or teasing however well meant - just don't find it at all funny. Quite relieved it's on a Sunday this year.

Didn't have a great night with my arm. I'd find a comfortable position, then need to move and it would take me ages to get settled again. Mr B snored through the whole thing. Arm was very stiff this morning, but once I was up and about it felt a bit better although drying my hair was a challenge. Times like this I need a daughter - oh, hang on... I'm sure it's nothing serious, just a pulled muscle. It'll be fine in a day or so.

Hoffs, hope you're feeling better today and that mini Hoffs has a good first day at his new school.

#43 Sal, I have very vague memories of my grandad - my Dad's dad, who died when I was very young. I'm ashamed to say I don't know when he was born (will have to ask my brother who's researching our family tree), but Dad was born in 1926 so I'm guessing his father would have been born around the turn of the 20th century. My Mum's mum, who died in 1989 so I remember her very well, was born in 1905.

  • Comment number 62.

#57 & #58 Simon played the trailer for Radio 4's "Listening Project", just before the confession, and an elderly lady was describing how she met her husband when he gave her a lift in a 3-wheeler car. After the clip, Sally asked, "Is that a real person?" Not once, but twice. I think Simona was a little shocked. Poor Sally; she really should get out of London more often.

Sorry that should read comment from Julia 40....senility settling in now under the blonde...... off for a read through now and prospecting new schools again for September.........pps: der Dicker= German for fat/enlarged man........

  • Comment number 65.

I think Sally sometimes speaks before activating her brain! And then each time she seems to dig herself a bigger hole. I don't think Simon knew what to say!

  • Comment number 66.

I remember my great grandmother (my dad's granny) with a wee red shawl over her shoulders. Can't really remember her face too clearly but I do remember the shawl. She must have been born around 1875 (ish)

My nan(mum's mum) was born in 1903 and it was my mum's granny who died the day before I was born.

I've done some of my family tree on my mum's side - it is facinating to do. It's also very time consuming and can be a bit expensive sometimes.

I found out that my great, great great grandfather fell off a train in 1883 (when he was 33 years) and was killed. I delved into that story quite a bit.

KELIS - Trick Me (if there's a radio friendly version)

  • Comment number 69.

In my innocence, I thought Sally was questioning whether it was an actress.

  • Comment number 70.

#62 Yes Harry, I think for the first time Simon was a little dumb struck at Sally's comment.

  • Comment number 71.

    My # 67 was in response to # 65.

Thanks for the repsonses to my 'memory' post. I am guessing that my great Grandmother was born around the 1870s too.

Some of their trinkets/valuables, who knows, I wouldn't part with them, have been passed down through the generations and I suppose must be antiques now. It seems odd to think, that things that have belonged to immediate family can be classed as that. Yikes!

  • Comment number 72.

#59 - Your Maj, I remember my Gran singing the Don't laugh at me cos I'm a Fool. She always sang it while pottering around in the Kitchen. That and 'Oh dear what can the matter be?' Lovely memories

    A.

  • Comment number 73.

#71 Sal, the furthest I can go back is 1899 - my Great Aunt Novella (my father's father's sister). She lived next door to my Grandad and I used to go round to see her whenever I got the chance. She used to let me sit on her lap as she played the piano AND she made the very best jam butties :0)))

  • Comment number 74.

    #67 Ha! ;)

  • Comment number 75.

Was that her Christian name Harry? Ahhh, jam butties eh! My Grandpa, used to butter the top piece of a milk roll, then put jam on and then slice it, with the loaf upright!

  • Comment number 76.

#71 And, Sal, as for family trinkets being antiques: I took my kids to a museum in Yorkshire (can't remember exactly where) only to find our kitchen was on display :0(

  • Comment number 77.

#75 Yes, Sal, her forenames were Sarah Novella but there was another, elder, sister called Sarah, too, so she was know as Novella.

  • Comment number 78.

Give me an old fashioned kitchen any day Harry :)

  • Comment number 79.

#76 Harry, that might have been York museum - I took my parents there once and found their first washer and gas cooker on display - much to their amusement!

  • Comment number 80.

Thats interesting about using the same names in families Harry, assuming of course that the children were from the same marriage.

Sally, or Sallie, which is how mine is spelt is supposed to be a shortened version of Sarah, cant quite work out how, but there you go.

Right, I'm off out on the pull.

Have a good day everyone :)

  • Comment number 81.

    #79 Tortie, I think you're correct.

When we lived in Leeds we spent the Summer holidays visiting as many FREE museums as possible and there were dozens in Yorkshire. Not always easy to find but well worth tracking down. Huddersfield had a couple of crackers, if memory serves me.

We only went to the York one because local authority workers were having a "work to rule" and letting everyone in for nought :0))))

Talking of places gone out of fashion - does anyone remember the 'bottle and jug' which was like an off licence attached to a pub and children could go in and buy 'pop' and sniff the heady atmosphere of that mysterious place - the pub!

Firstly I must apologise for not having thanked everyone who welcomed my first posting on Tuesday. That was quite remiss of me and I consider myself suitably chastised.

Today's song theme seems to be proving surprisingly difficult and I can't think of anything that hasn't already been suggested. I'd support 'Fool on the Hill' and 'Fool (If You Think It's Over)', though.

Some very interesting genealogy discussions. Feels like I've fallen into an episode of 'Who do you think you are?'

    Happiness abounds.

My maternal grandmother (the lovely one) was born in 1905. I clearly remember her elder brother although I am not sure of the age difference. In those days, it was likely to be anywhere between 12 - 24 months. My paternal grandmother (the not so nice one) was born in around 1895 and used to tell me tales of Queen Victoria.

  • Comment number 93.

I still have my nan's jeelly pan (a bronze pan for making jam) and black iron griddle which would look good in any rustic kitchen. They came in handy over the years as artifacts in the classroom if I was doing "The Victorians"

  • Comment number 94.

#91 Rostronposkett, I think you'll find the phrase is "poop back later" (a typo for "pop back later") which caused some amusement on its first appearance that it was adopted en masse. I've been here for over a year now and I've seen it hundreds of times.

Once PoS shows up this afternoon I'm sure he'll supply you with his dictionary

    of 'bloggisms'.

Just wait until we start getting pendantic ;-)

Further to my #94 (in response to #91) Of course, being a phrasal verb, "Poop" can be conjugated in several ways depending on which tense you want to use or where you are intending to poop:

    I will poop in

    You pooped by

    We pooped in

    Did you just poop by?

    etc

    Have fun with it :0)

#96 Alex_G, didn't you know? I read it on tinternet so it must be true :-S

After all this poop talk, Harry, I hope someone in the Construction Team definitely chooses 'Nincompoop' now.

I think Mandy's use of 'may poop later' without the crucial 'back' is what brought it to my attention....
