Forgetting my towel

Simon Mayo|08:31 UK time, Monday, 12 March 2012

As they always used to start in my Blue Peter annuals 'Hello There!" Here's a blog that is beginning at home but will be completed in a car, going to talk to 240 school kids aged 13. I am, justifiably I believe, terrified.

But first the weekend which I trust was a good one. Mine concluded with the Douglas Adams virtual 60th birthday bash at the Hammersmith Odeon last night. I have long been a huge fan of all things Adams and last night saw an attempt to capture the essence of the Hitchhikers Guide man in one brief 4 hour spectacular. It was a mixture of music (David Gilmore, Gary Brooker et al) Science (Robin Ince , Simon Singh and John Culshaw doing a great Prof Brian Cox impression) and comedy (Terry Jones, Sanjiv Baskar and the wonderful HeeBeeGeeBees). And lots of people in towels, this being the essential item for space travel. And if you've forgotten why, it's time to dust of the old Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and re-discover Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect et al one more time.

So to school! I am embarking on a recklessly imagined tour of UK schools to talk about Itch and today sees me on a platform with the aforementioned hundreds of well behaved students. My only hope is that I'm more interesting than the subject they would be having normally on a Monday morning. My father was a headmaster, my mother a teacher and my sister is a headteacher. I nearly became one myself but the call of the mic was too strong. Sitting in a room with one or two people is fine-standing on a stage in front of Ilford's finest, less so. I shall report back...

To the show! And we'll be having CALL THE MIDWIFE oldies as we welcome Jenny Agutter to Drivetime. The iconic star of Railway Children, American Werewolf in London, Walkabout and Equus has starred as a nun in the big BBC hit set in 1950's east London. It was re-commissioned almost as soon as it was first broadcast and Jenny is great in it of course. MIDWIFERY oldies should see us nicely through today's show I think.

Have a finely-judged and perfectly-balanced Monday, see you after 5

Good morning Simon, team and blogpoppets,

It's a lovely day here is Surrey, let's hope that Spring is in the air for us all at last.

Good luck Simon, I'm sure you'll do a grand job - you manage to charm us every day for two hours so it'll be a piece of cake with just one hall full! ;)

Nice to know you're inspiring 13 year olds Simon. There's a latent teacher in all of us. Say hello to Jenny Agutter on my behalf, I walk past Ty Rock most days; loved her work in Call the Midwife.

    Morning all

I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend. I'm wondering if everyone is else having the green box problem like I have just had. I don't like being first on the blog so I'm hoping that by the time I'm able to post my message, there will be others before me!

Simon, I can't believe that after talking to six or seven million people, five days a week, that you're terrified of talking to 240 youngsters... they'll love you and their mums will be envious!

    Morning all!

Had a lovely weekend the highlight of which was a family get-together on Sunday afternoon to celebrate cherubs Confirmation. Was really touched by my Mums gift, which was a pendant and chain given to her 75 years ago when she make her own Confirmation. An item to be treasured indeed.

Much food was prepared and consumed, and I now have a fridge full of assorted left-overs which are sure to be cleaned up by the minded childred who are round for tea today.

Trying to think of something orriginal for todays subject and having trouble, so im going to suggest the song that was playing on the radio when cherub was born.

    THANK YOU -DIDO

Have always felt it was somewhat appropriate :-)

A happy Monday to one and all

    # 14 Shona, I understand your envy! A two-minute drive in the car, or a ten-minute walk with the dogs and I can be on this beach... and it is this clean in the summer, as a tractor goes along first thing every morning gathering up the seaweed.

    Good morning everyone.

I woke up with Vanessa Feltz this morning, telling me how she'd spent her weekend. Apparently, she attended a party and one of the activities organised was a old-fashioned sing-a-long around the piano. She commented that two of her colleagues from Radio2 were also in attendance, Anneka Rice and Simon Mayo, and that Anneka had a lovely singing voice. I wondered if this meant that Simon's singing voice leaves something to desired? I think we need to be told ;-)

    Have a great day.

Gone a bit quiet in here this afternoon ....

I'm a bit ashamed to say I've never read HGTTG and feel as though I really should remedy that. I've got 4 books by my bed at the moment and haven't managed to crack the spine on any of them in the last 3 weeks. It's a bit of a case of bed...sleep..alarm..work..bed..sleep at the moment. However Easter hols are coming up and that's usually a good time for a literary catch-up (mind you 2 of the books are for book clubs which meet before the end of the month hmmmm).

Anyone else got books they've never read but really feel they should/want to read but just haven't got round to?

  • Comment number 55.

    #54

A book I tried really hard to read was 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' by

    Louis de Bernieres.

Thought it would be easy after seeing the film.

Not so....coudn't get past the first 30 pages.

Then found out they changed the ending in the film!

    Probably should try again...

    :(

  • Comment number 56.

Never read it, and didn't "get" the TV show either.

I have a print copy of Ivanhoe, and en electric copy on my tablet, and keep promising myself that I'll get round to reading it, but never have. I still have a book about the Sky road cycling team project to read, and a couple of thrillers to read too. By which time no doubt the next Jack Reacher will be out and I'll be wanting to read that. Assuming Tom Cruise hasn't destroyed the Reacher "thing" and put me off them by then :-)

So Ivanhoe might get back in the diary some time in 2013. I've read the first few pages a number of times, but they don't really grab me the way a decent thriller does. Hence it works it's way back to the bottom of the pile.

  • Comment number 57.

Its way too late but I've only just logged on and I would have plumped for:

HERE IT COMES AGAIN: Dolly Parton

Good Afternoon Each! I find myself in a state of envy for Simons night out yesterday. I love HGTTG, it contains my favourite line ever written in English. It is the description of the Vogon Constructor Fleet, as they prepare to destroy the earth,thus...

"The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't" Pure genius.

Incidentally, weren't the HeeBeeGeeBees actually Angus Deayton and some of his buddies?

I've never read HGTTG either. I did watch some of the TV series ages and ages ago and remember laughing and thinking it was very clever humour.

Just listening to the hamster confession, like Sal, I'm not so sure a 7-year old boy would know the difference between a male and female hamster... a friend of mine has a Hamster and doesn't know if it's a boy or girl and the same with her previous one so they both had unisex names!

HGTTG . I seem to remember watching the TV series but have never read the book. Was that the programme where the meaning of life was 6x7 (42)?

Someone sent a copy of One Day to me which I have never got round to reading and I think it may have been made into a film now. Unless anyone here tells me it's a good read, I'm sure it will remain on the book shelf.

Another busy day for me today - I'll be interviewing for most of it. Will try and poop by if I can. I feel that I'm neglecting the blog at the moment, so apologies for that. I'm sure normal service will be resumed in due course.

Really enjoyed the Jenny Agutter interview last night. And well done to Florence and Driver for the menshes.

Like you Deebee, I also enjoyed hearing Jenny Agutter last night, especially as I was listening in the car and always enjoy Simon's show on car journeys as the drive never seems as long.

It surprised me hearing my Tremeloes 'Baby' tune mensh and well done to The Driver for his song choice, on a show of few names mentioned for any song. Last week the songs seemed to be shared by several people!
