Deus Ex Machina
Hey guess what kids! I actually enjoyed being a teacher! Not that for one moment I imagine my talk to 200 11-13 year olds was typical of the lot of the modern teacher but for an hour the kids in Ilford and I were exploring life's unpredictable highway. And I found it rather fun. Maybe it's in the genes after all. Another school tomorrow morning-I'll be a deputy head by Thursday.
Yesterday's show was rather hair-raising as we we appeared to have (as Sting and co. might say) a ghost in the machine. And this ghost was determined to adjust the levels on microphones-and always downwards. Our brave engineering staff had to wrestle with said poltergeist to keep us audible and decent. Levels would be set and then change while we were watching-the spirit of a disgruntled studio manager (can there be such a thing?) must be possessing the studio. We must call for Rev Roger Royle to come and work his magic. Or, as we had to do last night, move studios in the middle of a show. Hopefully you wouldn't have noticed thanks to our top engineering staff. Keep calm and carry on indeed.
Today we welcome comedy writer and novelist John O'Farrell to the show. John wrote for Spitting Image, Have I Got New For You and Alas Smith and Jones. Then he turned to novels (May Contain Nuts) and non-fiction (Things Can Only Get Better:Eighteen Miserable Years in the Life of a Labour Supporter takes some beating) with great success. His new book is 'The Man Who Forgot His Wife' and John is always a good guest. From 6.
And oldies today? Well how about the DROUGHT ? Hosepipe bans on the way, exhortations to share showers and use your bath water to do the washing up in. Or something like that. DROUGHT and HOSEPIPE BAN oldies please to sprinkle over our Drivetime lawn tonight.
Have a youthful and spring-like Tuesday. See you after 5.

Apologies for my absence over the last 3 days - my vegetable garden has written me a note.
Absolutely stunning weather over the weekend but grey and chilly today. Indoor chores it is. Highly productive weekend - finished the greenhouse (there was language. Lots of language. Until we had the inspiration to go to the garden centre to look at the display model and see how that was put together. Genius). Built the steel table for the greenhouse and moved everything I need into it (including a radio, obviously), planted potatoes, carrots, onions, shallots, leeks and radishes. Then yesterday I played in the greenhouse all day with chillies, peppers, lettuce, cabbages and rocket. I really do have a wonderful life.
Unfortunately, the wonderful life might be interrupted with the world of work. The telephone has started to ring. Yikes, as Sal would say!
Hope all are well in blogland. Suzieee, hope you feel better soon.

Its a very rewarding and satisfying feeling, being organised and having so much sown already, for tiz only March. I have rather a lot of catching up to do at some point.
PSL, that two year wait will be well worth it, you beat the three year wait, by at least buying as crowns. Its grown in Withycombe near to where I live and they sell the crowns as well as selling it freshly cut every day and supplying to the shops etc.. I think they have a website, but if anyone is interested, just chuck in Asparagus and Withycombe, I am sure it will come up, pretty much like the asparagus does ;)
Funny old plant I t was once classified as a lily, but is now recognised in its own right, I think!

I'm off out and about in a while and a late finish too ;( Then a small trip to the store where every little helps and after Hoffs' #56 I'd best stock up on toilet paper too.
I'll be listening for all your names and music though.
Catch you later

#91 It is milder down here in Kent so we can get a bit of a head start. I have got some fleece over the carrots and onions just in case we get an early morning frost and the potatoes are in bags in a sheltered corner. Would love to grow asparagus but don't have enough room.
We have 3 rhubarb crowns which are making a good comeback. No idea how old they are. Apparently we have black and red currants and gooseberries in the fruit garden but with everything being bare at the moment, it is hard to tell what is what (other than the thorny goosegogs). And cherries, apricots, plums and 2 apple trees. I don't think I will ever have time to do anything in the garden - Mr P has decreed that the veg and fruit garden are my empire.
It really is quite joyful having a garden that is an unknown - every day something new is coming up. We are just going to let it do its own thing this year until we get an idea of what is here. Lovely showing of daffs at the moment but no snowdrops which is a shame.
