Take Me To The Mardi Gras

Simon Mayo|08:56 UK time, Tuesday, 21 February 2012

Hooray for routine and playing records. Hooray for Rebecca, Matt and Sally. And for the jingles, newsreaders and engineers. And production team. And security and management. All of them. It's fair to say a degree of exhaustion has kicked in. Having kept going non-stop for ages it all seems to be hitting at once but my ferocious health regime (no chips) and top-notch gym routine (steam room 3 times every week) will get me back on track in no time. Fear not.

Another top show planned today (note:planned. Not the same as delivered. But we'll try). We will be talking about Who Do You Think You Are today. They have a live event this weekend at Olympia in London and actor Larry Lamb - who was featured on the show in August - is on Drivetime tonight. He's best known I suppose for Archie Mitchell in Eastenders and Mick in Gavin and Stacey but let's talk family trees and ancestors. The tv show is a huge hit with a magazine spin off - its readers voted Larry's show their most popular.

And music? Well SHROVE TUESDAY, PANCAKE DAY and assorted paraphernalia would work fine I think. And in case you're wondering, sugar and lemon is the only true way. Really.

Have a relaxed and carefree Tuesday, see you after 5.

Morning all. Never been much of a pancake fan and as we're a Scottish household we only had 'scotch' pancakes and not the 'crepe - ie' ones anyway. However school today is running a 'pancake-bar' at lunchtime so maybe I'll give it a go...

    Good morning,

I really like Larry Lamb but unfortunately I won't get much chance to listen to the show tonight. May have to listen at a more convenient time. His Who Do You Think You Are was an outstanding one. Simon, I'm sure he will probably say but in case he doesn't can you please ask him if his mum and her long lost brother have met yet.

Billie, a chance to ask for The Beat!

Deebee, why are you reading this - you should be working ;-)

I only made and tossed my first pancake about 4 years ago at my sisters using Delia's recipe, well yummy!!! I like my pancakes totally naked as they come tossed out of the pan....best way... same as I like my gingerbread men....naked without icing paraphernalia splattered on them!

  • Comment number 42.

#23 I love scotch pancakes - they're a bit more like American ones, aren't they? Thicker and smaller than crepes.

Mr B and I will be having pancakes this evening, although I'll have to be a bit quick about it as it's choir practice night. Why does pancake day always have to be on a Tuesday? Oh, hang on...

    ;o)

I'm with Simon re the covering - it has to be sugar and lemon. Mr B however will probably go for maple syrup. If he's still around when I get home, that is - the man flu is really kicking in and he might not last the day...

#29 Like your pancake joke, Hoffs! Teehee!!

#35 LOL! I'm having a coffee break, if you must know...

YOU BATTER, YOU BET - The Who

  • Comment number 44.

Seems like Pancake Day is one of those events like C****mas where every household has their own special routine of how to do it. I love that!

THAT'S THE WAY I LIKE IT - KC & The Sunshine Band (who knew they did so many Pancake Day songs?!)

    MY WAY - Frank Sinatra

JUST THE WAY IT IS - Bruce Hornsby & The Range

In our house, we start with a savoury smorgasbord of toppings, so that everyone is happy: choose from spinach with creme fraiche, pancetta or bacon bits depending on how posh we're feeling, grated cheese, cooked mushrooms, pan-fried leaks or chopped broccoli.

Moving on, we have lemon juice, oranges or satsumas, kiwis, walnuts, chopped hazelnuts, choc chips or Nutella, runny honey, creme fraiche and sugar.

And every year, we say "Why don't we do this again before next Pancake Day?". And we never do.

  • Comment number 45.

Couple of obscure ones that won't get played:

INTO THE FRYING PAN - King Crimson

    FRYING PAN - Captain Beefheart

#42 Howdy Deebee! Hope Mr B feels better soon. I am sure he wil last the day and greet you with "maybe I could manage just a small pancake with a little maple syrup"!!

The people who used to live in this house need to be shot (said in a Jeremy Clarkson jokey styley). We have had to re-wire. We have had to replace the boiler (and previous people ran a central heating business so you would think the boiler would work). The garage roof has to be replaced. And now the burst pipe in the stable turns out to be not just one section of pipe but the whole bally lot. As one leak gets fixed, another one is found. At this rate, we will have to rebuild the whole house!

  • Comment number 46.

    Good morning all.

Tried to post this earlier but was faced by the green box. It has probably been suggested by loads of folk so can I share?

one tenuous one White Room Eric Clapton- too much flour gone wrong in the kitchen. Anyone got a recipe for lettuce with pancakes, have a surfeit?

Yuck yuck yuck. Another dead bat. Just hanging there in the stable. Yuck and thrice more yuck. I will leave it to Ziggy to remove it when he starts working on the stables.

I lived overseas in tropical climes many moons ago. The first Mr P and I had a house that edged onto the jungle and would often find a bat hanging from the rather revolting chandelier over the dining room table. Or was it just a table? We didn't have a dining room. The addition of the bat made the chandelier slightly less revolting. Gave it a certain something.

Going up to London on Thursday for a meeting. I haven't been to a town since I left the last contract on 15 December. Will I cope?

    Talking to myself?

  • Comment number 71.

    Afternoon all

No Alex, you're not talking to yourself! I'm enjoying all the stories of your wonderful, rural life (excluding dead bats)! No more offerings from the cats recently?

One for Vildeen and and our Gallic cousins across the Channel. You know those mobile food stands with massive hot metal plates where they pour the hot batter and spread it about ....

HEARD IT THROUGH THE CREPE IRON - Marvin Gaye

#70 Alex - Good luck with tackling the capital. Take a few dead bats with you and place them on the seats next to you on the train - you'll have plenty of legroom, and space to read the newspaper.

  • Comment number 74.

Ah, Tortie is here! Just snuck in as I was typing! Hello too you!

Do you know, I was just thinking this morning that we had gone for over a week without any gifts from the cats. Then I saw Rosie digging up a worm (she likes worms) and then Kira, eldest cat, caught a bird. Rosie stole the bird from Kira, brought it in and put it under the coffee table. I stole the bird from Rosie and put it in the chunder bucket. That'll learn me to think the cats are behaving!

We were working on the fencing in the paddock on Sunday and Kira and Rosie were playing with us, when I saw the Big Blue One who looks like Les Dawson walking down the yard and into the paddock. It was too funny! The paddock is really muddy and the Big Blue was lifting each paw so carefully with a look of distaste on her flat face. "Dirty, Mummy, dirty. Need wellies, Mummy. Hunter wellies". Hysterical!

  • Comment number 75.

#73 Excellent idea, John. Love the Marvin Gaye suggestion!!!

I really must do something useful so when Mr P comes home and asks what I have done, I don't have to invent something. "Did the washing up" really doesn't account for 8 hours.

    For you Sarah Jayne :-XXX)

  • Comment number 77.

    Afternoon all,

Apols for the absinthe, have been away in Paris, consuming - amongst other beverages, Absinthe!!

Catch-up at work (suppose I should, really) and finally a peep through the blog - how nice to see my B'day hat etc on 18th, thanks for all the messages katymac, Gazza, Jilly and anyone else I missed...

That day of the four was spent on an RER out of the city, to Chartres to see it's stunning cathedral (under renovation - it always pays to check these things) and a l o n g liquid entree, plat et dessert in a local restaurant. That cathedral was one of the COLDEST places I've ever been...

Looking back at the blog, it was funny to see the 'pooh' stories, or as I said most of the weekend "watch out for the caca de chien!"

I'd forgotten what a 'pissoire' Paris can smell like - and not just animals taking a crafty leak, either....

It'll be nice to hear the Maestro at the helm this evening, no doubt there will be some pancake makings going on in the background in most homes - ours no exception.

My son told me the night before we went to Paris he was moving into a shared house, with other professionals - his own age. He IS 25 and has been back and forth to wherever I lived since Uni and pre & post gap years, but I was a bit sad, end of an era really...helping him move Saturday and will try and keep a brave face.

Luckily, my mum is in a very funny play Saturday night which we are going to see (think of a play showing a local WI group putting on the 'Scottish play' - they are having trouble at rehearsals cos they keep creasing up!!') that should lift my spirits.

In terms of toons, would like to second

UPSIDE DOWN by Diana Ross, or Jack Johnson

    or SUGAR SUGAR Archies...

We always have savoury ones (chicken and mushroom) AND sweet - I love lemon, and maple syrup...

Enjoy your 'fat' Weds everyone, for tomorrow we diet.

  • Comment number 78.

#77 ARG so it's Fat TUESDAY, of course...

I did have a late night (Eurostar delay = 2 free singles, or one free return trip!)

  • Comment number 79.

Alex, does your Big Blue cat who looks like Les Dawson have a name? Or is she just called the BBOWLLLD? And can she play the piano...? Good luck for your trip to the Big Smoke. You'll be fine as long as you take my granny's advice - wear clean knickers and don't talk to strangers...

    ;o)

Best wishes to PSL's mum - hope it's going/gone well today.

    ~X~

  • Comment number 80.

#79 She does indeed have a name. And it is written on her pedigree certificate. You will laugh. She is known as The NJ (pronounced Nuj) or Blue or Blue-ski. Her proper name is Miss Norah Jones.

  • Comment number 81.

#80 Could explain that track on Norah Jones' first album, "Feline The Same Way"....

  • Comment number 82.

Have given up on pancake making already. Full-time-Mummy-Hoffs thought a pancake snack after school would be a good idea. Someone had not put lid on golden syrup tin properly. It got dropped. Sadly, landed the wrong way up. Messy.

My only attempt at (completely gramatically incorrect) punnery is:

CAN'T GET YOU OFF OF MY HEAD - Kylie Minogue (cringe - sorry for the 'off of')

  • Comment number 83.

#79 - Deebee - that's where I have been going wrong all these years. My granny told me always to carry 10p and a clean handkerchief (to make into a sling if someone broke their arm). Oh well, at least I could have bandaged a stranger's arm and used the 10p to phone their Mum.

    Hello Poppeteers

Not had a chance to read back yet but I'm going to have to wave goodbye for a few days :(

Got visitors arriving tomorrow staying with us and more descending upon us the weekend. It would be rather rude to ask them to stop talking while I come and blog with you. So, I'm handing in my absence note now.

Good luck with the choon chasing and I'll listen out for you all when I can: ))

    Hello everyone.

Just returned from optician visit -ouch!! - thank heavens for a flexible plastic friend! Discussing the cost with the Mr over lunch though, we decided it was quite a bargain if divided over several years and the fact that you only get one pair of eyes! Glad your mum has had her eyes sorted out PSL - I bet she'll notice a difference when the after effects of the op wear off.

I hereby claim an OSM (along with everyone else) for Paul Simon!

Off to make pancakes - lemon and sugar for us! Enjoy yours however you have them...................

What about the confession today then? I'm all for pranks, jokes, humour and general japery (if there is such a word), but that's pushing it. A step too far.

    Hi Again!

I can’t bear to listen to “Sister” by Beth Hart/Slash. It is so beautiful. I just fill up – I’m such a soppy sentimental old get - I’m going to have to start turning it down!

Enjoyed the show. Larry Lamb comes across as such a sober, well-rounded, grounded, intelligent man.

Heard all the show making Pancakes!

Menshees All – Welldone! I’m bound to miss someone out – Florence, Deebee/Debbie, Zoe and The Driver! Congrats!

    Oh! And Blogger Billie!

Enjoyed reading the blog today and all the talk of Pancake Toppings and Fillings. I like posts with food in. Liked the sound of JBG’s household. We’ve just made 12 pancakes – 8 of which have been layered up in tinned toms with a filling of Spinach, Cottage Cheese, Garlic and an egg to bind. When it’s heated through, we will put some Parmesan on top to brown. The other 4 will call for some Banana, Maple Syrup and Vanilla IceCream.

    We do this quite often.

PSL – glad things went well today!

    Hi Jennie! Hi Hoffs!

    Hi everyone

I'm feeling full up after rather a lot of pancakes and I daren't own up to the number I have eaten, but it was far too many for me to go to Zumba tonight!!

I didn't like the sound of tonight's confession!! Well done to menshees Deebee, Blogger Billie, Zoe and The Driver and I was pleased to get another mensh tonight... albeit a belated one!

Cooked too many pancakes (28, since you're asking), eaten too many pancakes (5, if you must know), slumped in front of the Brits with a glass of red. Rock 'n' roll.

#96 - JBG - sounds like a good place to be. Enjoy!

I am watching The Brits and felt sorry for Adele being cut off in the middle of her speech for having won the best album award... I'm sure Blur would have allowed her a few more seconds to finish what she had started to say!
