Having very recently been put in a situation, where I have to give up all foods containing gluten, I am now realising how difficult its going to be, and not just for Lent either. So, good luck to all those attempting to do so.

I have decided to give up alcohol for Lent - apart from the bottle of red which is already open and too good to waste! I'm hoping it might kick start a bit of weight loss to give me some hope that it can be done! The trouble with not being so mobile anymore is that exercise is not as easy as it sounds to all the 'experts' and all the good things in life tend to put on a few pounds here and there so I'll make an effort to start somewhere!

Sal, sorry to hear about the dietary changes that have beset you. Adapting is going to take a while but once the habit is there, I am sure it will be easy. I would imagine the hardest part will be when you go out to eat. Some places are really good about special diets, others aren't. Our local pub restaurant doesn't even cater for vegetarians!!

You will be relieved to hear that I'm disappearing off now for a bit -giving you respite from my wierd sense of humour!



SF due back on Friday from 7 weeks of daily radiotherapy so got to go and get things ready for him and my mum. Can I just say, they are both BRILLIANT. Words cannot describe how amazingly they have coped with the last few weeks. Puts so much into perspective for the rest of the family. Fingers crossed that the slow journey down the long road to recovery will begin on Saturday.



Zeb-the-moshing-mouse-muncher (loved the idea Katy, thanks) and I will be doing our worst in the kitchen tonight when the show is on. Good luck for menshes for all x

Hi all! And apologoes Simon. You are Not Guilty m'lud. I'm here, occasionally lurking rather than blogging. In the rain as you may have gathered from my 3 worder on Monday. Late to the party today, because the mister and I have been to Sheffield Children's Hospital, to see a dietician r.e twin two. Another lesson in teaching your grandmother how to suck eggs, unfortunately. We look to experts to offer us something that we haven't thought of ourselves, but mostly it boils down to the fact that the parents are the real experts.



Anyway, on to blogging matters...



Simon - Unless any bloggers have given up blogging for lent, I think the likely explanation for the lower post count in the gremlins in the system. I tried, unsuccessfully, to post three times yesterday evening, only to get the green message box, saying that the blog wasn't accepting comments. It seems to be happening frequently, and most bloggers have encountered it. 'Ave a word, thanks :)



On lent - I won't be giving anything up, because I'm not of the religious persuasion, but I thought that whatever was given up, it should be a real sacrifice. It no use giving up something that you could happily do without anyway, that is surely not in the spirit of Jesus's 40 days and nights in the wilderness.



On Larry Lamb & Who Do You Think You Are - I really enjoyed the interview last night, and researching one's genealogy can be a very interesting voyage of discovery. When it comes to whether our biology has been affected by what our ancestors professions/lifestyles etc were, the mister reminded me of the work of Doctor Rupert Sheldrake https://www.sheldrake.org/homepage.html It may seem a bit 'out there', but Dr Sheldrake came up with a theory based on something he called 'Morphic Fields' and 'Morphic Resonance', which is a bit complicated to explain, but basically boils down to a kind of telepathic link between a particular species. Sal #60something- A gluten free Thursday from Nigel would be very practical- great suggestion. I have requested a recipe for Danish pastries as that's the only thing the special needs counters at our national supermarkets lack- generally these products ready made are not too pricey but I now make my own bread with said flours as they last longer, slice when needed and much tastier.... as for DNA bipassing the next generation I still can't do maths/physics nor dressing-making (not simultaneously) despite my ancestry. Breaking news: I've given up ironing for lent, should be filed under 'extreme sports'.

#73 Julia - Thank you :) I think you're spot on, these 'experts' know everything in theory, but not much in practice. If they got out and about a bit more in the real world, they would see that their academic approach doesn't always translate into reality.

We are off to Brum to see my mum in a funny play - so out of the house and back when it is bedtime...he normally only surfaces at the weekends at lunchtime so prob won't miss him until the first weekday evening when there will be am empty place at the table *wells up*...it's a stage in life, I suppose, and he is 25 this summer!!

No chance of buying anything round here - although he has got a nest egg from his dad's estate, he doesn't want to invest in anything to 'tie him down' as he said.

#78 If I was going to pick any of the songs listed as a dead cert for being played I'd go for CONSTANT CRAVING - a brilliant suggestion.



I already went through January without alcohol (easy, as I rarely drink these days anyway) and chocolate (far more difficult, but easier than I thought it would be) so I'm not giving either up for Lent.



Being such a puritan and therefore relatively vice free (my story - sticking to it), after much deliberation I'm going to give up NOT going to the gym. I joined in December and, having been once, have enjoyed not going ever since.

Hi All



I spent today in what was possibly the most boring meeting ever. And it wasn't just me that thought so - the general consensus of those I spoke to afterwards was that the whole thing seemed totally unnecessary. That's six hours of my life that I'm never going to get back...



I'm not giving anything up for Lent. Instead, I've decided to do something positive - I'm going to pay somebody a compliment every day. I think it's going to be harder than it sounds - as a nation we Brits aren't very good at either taking or receiving compliments. We'll see how I get on...

I was interested in what Melvyn Bragg had to say, and I can go along with some of it. But I still think it's very hard for people born into poverty, to break out of that cycle. It does happen, but it's rare, and there still isn't as much movement in certain professions, as one would hope. The example given being at the top of the political spectrum, as was mentioned in the interview. I simply cannot accept that those people are the best our country has to offer, and many of them still have the old sense of entitlement that goes along with being descended from old money, and aristocracy. Anyway, I could rattle on about this subject matter for ages, but you'll all be relieved to hear that I haven't got the time ;-)

It was a good night for bloggers' menshes tonight! I wonder if Simon's comment about fewer bloggers posting had anything to do with so many familiar names! Perhaps it was his way of trying to 'round up some stragglers'!



Well done Autumn Gale, Jennie Wren, Mandy, Nadine and a hat-trick for me this week! The Driver was right about Constant Craving being played and like Deebee, it's not a song I like, but it fitted the theme! As a Queen fan, it was a nice change hearing one of their songs played for Matt to mosh!

During the show we prepped and roasted Peppers, Courgettes, Aubergines, Onions & Garlic.



This will make a Roasted Veg. Lasagne and a Roasted Veg. Mozz. Bake and a side dish of roasted courgettes. All Delish – and you should smell our kitchen.





Non Sequitur –



Tonight I used a clothes brush which I have had longer than my husband! We think it’s a “Ronco” as advertised on TV! It’s plastic – grey – with a wine coloured central bit. The idea is that you brush the hairs and stuff in one direction and then to clean the brush you brush in the other direction. And it works – and it has worked for about 30 years! Not bad for something like £1. 86!

Katy - Sorry to hear that you won't be blogging again until Easter :( I should have kept my trap shut earlier r.e bloggers giving up blogging for lent. But you must do what is right for you.



Florence - Simon has been very generous with the menshes since his return :)



Gill - I thought you'd mentioned being gluten-free before. I heard Simon mention that he'd had gluten-free pancakes, during the show. I think there's a better range of products available in shops these days, but I'm not sure how they compare price-wise :-/



Billie - On Twitter the other day, Andy (formerly Artfoundry Man/Wharfedale Andy of this parish) mentioned that his ironing board was 30 years old, and still in service. I replied that my ironing board was also of a similar age, as I've had it 20+ years, and it came to me second hand. Mind you, I am like Matt on the ironing front, in that I don't do it! I buy crease-free clothing, and body heat takes care of the rest (I once tweeted this to Simon when ironing was discussed once before, and he read it out) I know some people will frown on me for not ironing, but really, life is just too damn short.



Now it really is bedtime, the washing machine repair man is coming first thing, after 5 cancelled appointments and 2 visits with the wrong part... Shocking customer service from the Astronomically named electrical goods retailer!
