Feeling Creaky

Simon Mayo|08:05 UK time, Friday, 10 February 2012

Morning bloggers.

Made up for missing the Folk Awards ceremony by a fine gig last night at Kings Place from Martin Simpson, Dick Gaughan, and June Tabor. With brilliant playing from Andy Saward and Andy Cutting they worked their way from Sheffield to Glasgow to Louisiana and Shilo. Episodes and Green Wing star Stephen Mangan was sitting next to me and led us all in a long ovation. We emerged to a wintry swirl-second in a week!

'February made me shiver' sings Don McLean on R2 this morning (6.16 am). How right he is. Half term beckons with 2 inches of snow on the ground and excited kids wondering if they'll get a snow day to add to their week off. And parents everywhere hoping they don't have to rearrange everything pdq. Just keep them for one more day! It's not much to ask!

Child 2&3 keen to come to my work this morning anyway as Daniel Radcliffe follows his R2 Breakfast appointment with Chris with a movie chat for Dr Mark K and me. The Woman in Black is his new film and a Hammer production. Many bloggers will have read the book/seen the play so know what to expect; plenty of shocks and old fashioned terror. Creaky doors, cobwebs, graveyards in the garden all work their spell on the viewer. And Mr Radcliffe is a fine actor now. It is surprising to find him with a child and a widower these past 4 years but we quickly go along with that. It's not a film for late night, solitary viewing (particularly if you have a house with creaky doors, cobwebs and a graveyard in the garden) but recommended for everyone else.

Then to R2 for some hot rocking ARF action and I really want to start with your song. Your particular song, so make it easy for me! It's my last show for a week as Blockbusters takes over for a few days (1 show down, 39 to go) and Ms Tarbuck will be with you. She also did Blockbusters for a series so she'll understand what's happening. My half term will be full of p's q's and flashing hexagons.

Have a salty and well gritted Friday, see you at 2&5.

And have a great week!

Good Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

There was I, merrily wishing everyone a good day in yesterday's blog...

Best wishes Simon for your week of filming - sounds like a mammoth undertaking. We'll miss you, but I'm sure Liza will do a sterling job.

Listening to Daniel Radcliffe with Chris at the moment. He seems like a nice guy, and he's clearly grown up a lot since he started out as Harry Potter. I saw him in a show on Broadway when Daughter and I were in NYC - he was very good.

Read 'The Woman in Black' years ago. I remember it being quite dark.

Back later with an ARFO (if I can come up with one)

Morning Simon, team, NYM and hexagonal bloggers (other shapes also available blah blah blah...)

Half term indeed, and the excitement/anticipation/trepidation* is in the air (*delete as appropriate)

I too was out last night, at the theatre (ooh, culture). It's a wonderful feeling to come out to an unexpected winterwonderland. Lovely pics, Deebee, on the previous page.

Many thanks for the mensh last night for Say Hello Wave Godbye, most kind, I'm sure. I noticed the song was sounding particularly "crispy" and wondered if was just because I remembered it from the 80s in a snakebite induced haze. Glad you confirmed it was a re-recording. On the ball, as ever.

    And so to the ARFO...

Well, this may be a bit obvious, and has also been played before, but that's never stopped you...

    BLOCKBUSTER - SWEET.

But if that won't do, I'll have another try for

REAL WILD CHILD or THE PASSENGER - IGGY POP

    And if all else fails...

JOHNNY BE GOOD - Chuck Berry

    Good day all

    JBG

Okay, I've had a thunk. I'm going to go for:

JUMPING JACK FLASH by the Rolling Stones

    JEAN GENIE by David Bowie

SON OF MY FATHER by Chickory Tip

and for the heck of it

    WORLD MACHINE by Level 42

Of to brave the elements - I may be some time...

    Good Morning all.

A very brief poop in from me, things to do, people to see, places......

MY particular ARF, the one that is particular to me is..

    *** Twilight *** by ELO.

    Simples.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    MTF :)

    Good Morning Simon and Poppeteers

Very wet here today but at least there is no snow. Stay safe if you are in a winter wonderland out there.

    My ARFO (s) today

I LIKE THAT OLD TIME ROCK N' ROLL - Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band

    or

BAMA LAMA BAMA LOO - Little Richard

I hope all goes well with Blockbusters next week Simon and looking forward to seeing it again on TV.

    Work beckons......catch you later.

Good morning Simon, Team and Fellow Blogpoppets,

It certainly is a winter wonderland outside. Alot of the snow from the first deluge on Saturday evening didn't melt away and now with this fresh covering, we must have a good 6-7 inch deep covering in the garden. Trying to keep the water from freezing for the horse, chickens and birds has certainly been a challenge lately.

I am very impressed with Mr Radcliffe's choice of music on Chris's show this morning. It will be interesting to hear the interview this afternoon, Simon.

Sounds like you have a whirlwind of a week, next week, Simon. I quite enjoy Liza's dry sense of humour and she does know her music.

An ARFO - has sufficient time elapsed since my last successful attempt?

    ABACAB by GENESIS

Stay warm and be safe out on them there roads,

    madchick x

  • Comment number 8.

Luckily the kids did go to school!

"I've Got the Music In Me" Kiki Dee and Elton John

  • Comment number 9.

Good morning all from a cold but snow free place across the channel.

Suggestion for todays ARF opener and to keep in the spirit of the great folk music we have had during this weeks shows can I suggest THE POGUES, combining with the DUBLINERS, in a fine version of THE IRISH ROVER.

    Keep warm

  • Comment number 10.

Hmmmm, having never had a success at the ARF thingy wotnot, a thought poooped into my head.

Who can lay claim, to the 'most times' on the throne? ;)

Who is our current King of Kings/Queen of Queens?

  • Comment number 11.

    Good morning everyone.

Of course, as ever, I would love to hear:

I WANT YOUR LOVE by TRANSVISION VAMP

but I sense reluctance. So, a couple of alternatives:

    PARANOID by BLACK SABBATH

    JUMP by VAN HALEN

P.S. None of the above has been the ARFO

  • Comment number 12.

    My ARFO suggestion:

GIMME ALL YOUR LOVIN' - ZZ Top

Its hot, got Friday guitar licks and is a great song for the car stuck in half-term traffic.

  • Comment number 13.

Snow beautiful though melting fast. The view from my office window is not usually inspiring, being directly across the road from three 10-storey blocks of flats. However, the snow on the bare branches of the trees around them gives the whole thing a far more magical air, and are so attractive to the eye that one almost doesn't notice the blocks at all.

ARFO? Well, I think I may have mentioned before a particluar favourite ...

    CHICAGO - 25 or 6 to 4

... but based on the assumption that as it's failed to tickle the musical taste buds of the choon-choozas in the past a couple of alternative suggestions may increase my chances, so...

    FOCUS - Hocus Pocus

MIDNIGHT OIL - Beds Are Burning

    or

    EMF - Unbelievable

    Have a lovely day, everyone.

  • Comment number 14.

Howdeedoodee bloggers, and congratulations Simon for Blockbusters so I'll second the ARF as mentioned by #3John B Good: Blockbuster by The Sweet or how about Wild Boys by Duran Duran. Have a good weekend

  • Comment number 15.

Morning from a Horsforth with some hoar-frost!!! I was going to suggest 'Born to run' but ended up listening to Mr Evans playing it as I reversed the Landy out. More news on the frog front is a three word Friday:

    SIX FROGS A-SWIMMING

Mr Aquaplane having broken more ice on the pond to free more air pockets. To my music choice and it's appropriate in a way:

    FREE - ALL RIGHT NOW

Must go to stamp some bits of paper - keep warm peeps!

  • Comment number 16.

Good morning Simon, Team, NYM and fellow blogpoppets!

Hope all are fine and dandy this chilly morn. No more snow here - we still have quite enough lying about. But, the sun shines, Rosie is playing and Ziggy is in the barn so all is well with the world.

ARFO. I normally try to stick to just one choice but this morning I am genuinely torn between three:

I WAS MADE FOR LOVING YOU - Kiss

ROCK ME GENTLY - Andy Kim

    METAL GURU - T-Rex

Any of those would do just fine, methinks.

Back in a bit after I have changed the cats litter trays. Living on the edge, me.

  • Comment number 17.

Morning Simon and fellow chilly bloggers. Unfortunately we're at school today (well staff are - but there's more than a few children who've not bothered!). I will freely admit to doing a snow-dance last night but what we've got is an unpleasant few inches on top of ice so it's trecherous but not bad enough to be closed. Grrrrrr.

Anyway..... I've had 2 very busy days and haven't had a chance to listen, never mind read back. I hope all is well. Is today the day for Deebee's mum's op and Alex's funeral? I hope all goes well ((hugs))

ARFO? Ack I can't really think of anything exciting so going to stick with:

    Wonderful World - Joey Ramone

  • Comment number 18.

Having listened to the Folk Awards this week and being still in a folky state of mind, I dug out my copy of Rubber Folk last night. For those who don't know it, it's a folk version of the Beatles' Rubber Soul album and is quite superb. I've had Cara Dillon's beautiful version of 'Wait' going round in my head all morning. Just waiting for a day when there's an appropriate theme so that I can suggest it - it deserves the airplay.

  • Comment number 19.

    Morning Simon, Team and Blogpoppets

Another mild, snow-free day here, unlike the view from Deebee's house, which looks very pretty in the snow... and I love your big black furry friend!

Can't make up my mind on just one...

DON'T FEAR THE REAPER ~ Blue Oyster Cult

BORN TO BE WILD ~ Steppenwolf

BORN TO RUN ~ Bruce Springsteen

Lady-S - I have a phobia about the F's you are mentioning so have to skip your posts. Sorry.

    Autumn-Gale - I haven't died!! But I am going to a funeral on Tuesday.

MTF - I have had the ARF crown twice.

Deebee, hope all goes okay today.

Right, coffee for Ziggy then I MUST soort out the litter trays.

Have a great time next week Simon peeing and queing it and looking at gold runs! I must get sky to view it when it is aired.

Best wishes to Momma Deebee and Alex G on their difficult days.

Tooth ache subsiding....means infection is clearing up in readiness for the "extraction" on Tuesday. My 1st tooth out and it fills me with dread!

    Anyway my ARFO is:

    1. I KNEW THE BRIDE - Dave Edmunds

    2. GIRLS TALK - Dave Edmunds

    3. YOU KEEP ME HANGING ON - Kim Wilde

    Have lovely weekends.

    Laters

#24 Blimey Katy, you been saving those up for a while?! Do you have an ARFO-Generator attachment for your Kenwood Chef hidden in the kitchen cupboards?

Re: the responses yesterday to my rant about the cost of "that trial", I agree with you, the cost in those terms can't really be considered as part of the equation and I was being a bit facecious. My real gripe is that they can spend that much of our money and make such a pigs' ear of the case, while on the other hand waiving millions in tax for a large corporation.

Saw Raphael Ravenscroft in David Gilmour's band on the "About Face" tour - very talented player. Must catch up with that from yesterday's show in the iPlayer.

  • Comment number 35.

    Anybody here?

  • Comment number 36.

#25 Mandy, you won't feel a thing having your tooth out! I had a back double tooth removed last year after having previously paid for a root canal and a crown! The crown kept coming off... my own fault for chewing toffees and sticky fruit gums, so my dentist said it's best to pull it out!

This worried me a bit because the last time the crown came off, it actually 'snapped' off so the surface below was flat and I wondered how my dentist was going to 'pull' it out so he explained that he wouldn't be 'pulling' it out, but would drill down into it to break it up and pull the 'bits' out, which is what happened and he stitched over the gap too and it didn't hurt at all and I was given some cotton wool/gauze pads to bite on for a while afterwards and then had to swish salt & warm water around for a few days to keep it clean and help the healing. The stitches dissolved away and I had no problem and I know you'll be OK too.

  • Comment number 37.

    Hello all

Afraid I won't be listening tonight (I feel bad already) so will refrain from posting an ARFO this time.

Next week won't quite be the same but Liza is my favourite stand-in on any show - certain other R2 shows please think about this!! Her laugh is particularly great and bound to pick you up if you've had a not great sort of a day...

  • Comment number 38.

    I've just popped by, Alex.

I think the blog is living up to Simon's title today. A bit creaky!

  • Comment number 39.

#35 Alex_Girl - I was just thinking the same thing. Very quiet today. Although having said that, Katy has suggested two DT shows worth of songs!

Heard a nice rumour this morning that my contract is to be extended a little further... :o)

  • Comment number 40.

    Afternoon all,

Mammoth trek home last night from a curry and wine with friends...home by 12.30, up again too bloomin early...at least I knew what I faced when I got up snow-wise.

Sorry, manners gone to pot with very very slight hangover (she lied)

HELLO to DT team, bloggers, snowdogpoppets and reluctanttoleavethehouse catpoppets, plus of course the DT Dude, looking forward to his BIG week back on the box.

Still not sure myself how his 'new shoes' that he bought will fit into the Blockbusters gameshow - maybe there is some standing about, walking, sitting on desks?

Certainly that well-known sax player Bob Holness never left his seat. I rather think he was like the leader of the Daleks - in a machine from the waist down.

Looking forward to seeing how our DT leader 'signs off' at the end of BB's, will it be a cheery wave, a germanic salute (in the stylee of Bob Holness) or a wink (in the stylee of Anne Robinson...)

We do have the requisite channel on our tv package so all will be revealed no doubt soon.

ARFO I am trying yet again to get the nearly-pensioner (65 on 25th March!!) Sir Elton John to open with

    CROCKODILE ROCK

But was inspired while listening to Venus and Mars on my tramp home last night to offer from that:

    MEDICINE JAR

Its is cracking from the word go - check it out!!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t05Q7R1J0wA

As Sir Paul has been all over R2 this week like a rash, promo-ing his new Jazz LP, and is ALSO a pensioner (70 this year!!), let's hear it for the Old Guys.

He could probably do with supplementing his state pension with a few royalties...it might even encourage folks to look at his old back catalogue (I prefer V&M to Band on the Run myself).

Night off tonight, (but lunching with a friend in 1/2 hr, & no work this afternoon....) trekking out by bus on Saturday to see local friends and their still newish baby (Xmas delivery)

Enjoy your weekends, all, hope you get where you want to go and if you don't want to go anywhere, have enough vittals to keep you going!

  • Comment number 41.

'Tis a bit creaky today! Will the floorboards appear?

That's good news, Driver. I was talking to one of my recruitment consultants this morning and she said the market is picking up so I am feeling hopeful of landing a contract soon.

We won't be able to watch Blockbusters unfortunately as we don't have the requisite channel. We refuse to have any Murdoch related stuff in the house (will that get modded? Not sure). I know Simon will be great in it but recording 39 shows in one week sounds like a bit of a marathon!

  • Comment number 42.

#40 Suzieeeeee, perhaps the all-new Blockbusters programmes will see our DT leader standing up like some news readers now seem to do, with some walking around the studio, so he needs to have smart shiny shoes instead of comfy loafers.

Have any blogpoppets got tickets to go and watch the recordings?

  • Comment number 43.

#41 Alex, recording 39 programmes in one week is going to be hard work but I'm sure the thought of the residuals will keep Simon going.

What are we going to do next week?

  • Comment number 44.

Annie Lennox - Walking On Broken Glass

Bob Holness went to our son's grammar school, our Blockbusters claim to fame.

Term break-limp woot-woot from me, mum taxi.

Enjoy the weekend and week everyone,

    LB, x

  • Comment number 45.

#40 Suzieeee, that made me smile. I now have an image of Simon firing questions Davros-style! :-) Will all the losing contestants be exterminated?? I hope there are no stairs on the set!

  • Comment number 46.

    Hello people

Tis very quiet here isn't it?

    ARFO Choice from me:

    Loves Great Adventure-Ultravox.

Not around much next week so hope all goes well foe Deebee's mum, Alex's funeral (I know not Hers exactly but you know what I mean) and Mandy's tooth. Gazza-Keep taking the tablets!

Going to see One Man, Two Govnors on Tuesday so really looking forward to that.

Have good weekends all and hope it's not too snowy for you!!

    Love & kisses,

    Mrs B xx

  • Comment number 47.

Not much happening on here today?! Is everyone frozen up or something?

Did anyone else hear Jeremy Vine yesterday talking to Sally about the folk awards. He described folk music as "using all the notes while rock just goes bang bang bang " or words to that effect! Priceless!!

  • Comment number 48.

#9: Top tune. Can't think of a better ARFO to end the week of the Folk Awards.

  • Comment number 49.

    Quiet indeed....

Trying to get things done an dusted before half-term so I don't have to take a pile of work home.

I have to say that right at this moment I'd saw off my ear for a gin & tonic..... is that a bad sign?!

  • Comment number 50.

    #49 Autumn, which ear?

  • Comment number 51.

Message from Mum - she's been sent home and the operation is rescheduled for 29th February :o( Incredibly frustrating, not to mention stressful - getting herself all psyched up for nothing. Grrr...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 52.

    Catching up...

#10 Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Tortie is the only one to have received the ARFO crown three times. Which is kind of nice, as she doesn't get much credit the rest of the time. A few of us have had two ARFOs. Talking of which, where is Tortie? Haven't seen her around recently - I may have to send out a search party.

#25 Mandy, don't worry about the tooth extraction - it will be fine. I've had two wisdom teeth out, and on each occasion I had so much local anaesthetic my mouth was numb for hours afterwards. You may be a bit sore once it wears off, but if swill around with salt water as Florence suggests it should heal up very quickly.

#42 It's a no from me - I didn't apply, as I thought I was going to be at Mum's. Not terribly happy about the choice of ticket provider either, but maybe this isn't the best place to mention that...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 53.

#51 Really sorry to hear that, Deebee. As you say, very stressful and frustrating for your Mum... and for you. Hope your Mum gets plenty of rest over the next couple of weeks so she is nice and strong for the op.

#43 The usual sweepstake? A game? I won't be around on Monday or Tuesday but will join in with whatever is decided when I can. How about you suggest a theme each day to keep our brains working? What does everyone else think?

  • Comment number 54.

#52 Same here DeeBee - I've had it happen to me and it's really frustrating - especially as work arrangements had all been made.

#22 Alex, I confess I can't handle them! Hence Mr Aquaplane is the hero I just watch.

As regarding Blockbuster, I caould never get over the titters when they said 'Can I have an E please, Bob?'. What was all THAT about?

  • Comment number 55.

    Afternoon all,

Pooping in for a quick lunchtime hello. "Hello!" (My Dad used to finish every phone call to me by saying, "Well I'll say goodbye then; goodbye!")

#51 Deebee - sorry to hear about your Mum's delay. Did you check the calendar to make sure there IS a Feb 29th?? ;)

Just the one ARFO crown for me - Get Offa my Cloud.

Could I have a 'What A Wonderful World' by Joey Ramone, please, Simon?

  • Comment number 57.

#51 - Sorry to hear about your mum's op postponement. It must be horrible to get psyched up for an operation and then to have it put off.

Doesn't Katy have a list of ARFO winners?

    JW

  • Comment number 58.

Awww Deebee, what a shame your mum's op has been postponed yet again, so let's hope it will be third time lucky for her on the only Feb 29th until 2016!

I've had two ARFO crowns... the second one was the week I went for a temporary name change, but I have kept it as I rather like the name, even more so since I met a cute pug called Florence the other day.

Shame you've not got tickets for Blockbuster, Deebee... but what's the problem with the ticket supplier?

Look who was outside the kitchen window this morning, nibbling away on the birds' fat and seed I had mixed up for the birds!! Good job it was outside and not in the house!!

I forgot to say earlier that tomorrow is my "anniversary" - one year to the day that I joined the blog - so perhaps this is my prezzie from Lord Ammo and the NYM. Do you think they knew?

Perhaps I should retire the nom de blog "Harry the Snapper"?

  • Comment number 77.

    Well done Harry, excellent choice!

  • Comment number 78.

Ooh, Rosie's song!!! There's not a whole lot of my Rosie - she's a midget cat. With attitude.

Well done, Harry. Paranoid, Black Sabbath. At least I can feel that I was on the right lines ;0)

Incidentally, Simon played a bit o' Quo earlier, Rocking All Over The World. Is it just me that thinks that the first note played on the guitar in that song, should be immediately followed by the word 'Matron'?

  • Comment number 91.

Having read back the blog and realising there has been a lot of talk about tickets for Blockbusters, the tickets I have are not for Simon's new show but for a certain Irish singer coming to Stirling in November.

Mandy, please don't worry about getting your tooth out. I've had all 4 wisdom teeth out with a freeze only. Imagine my panic though when I heard the dentist ask for a hammer when I was lying back in the chair and mouth open wide. She had a good sense of humour.

Glad to hear work is picking up and the contract is being renewed Driver.

Deebee, sorry to hear your mum's op has been postponed again. How frustrating and stressful for her. X

Lady_Stormrider, I think the sniggering over "Can I have an E please Bob" is to do with naughty tablets in which some youngsters seem to indulge unfortunately :(

Harry, your a genius with games - so decide on one for next week and we'll call it Harry's Game. Did you see what I did there?

Best go and get dinner started. Mr W's cousin is coming for the weekend and I rather fear I'll be rushed off my feet fetching and carrying all weekend.

    Catch you when I can

    Hello lovelies

    Sorry for absinthe, I have a Doctor's note! :S

Been a bit of a crappy few days BUT have to say I was cheered enormously to hear Harry T. Snapper Esq. nab the ARFO. Well done that man. Chuffed to bits it was you :)

Will be roundandabout a bit more next week hopefully.

    Have wonderful weekends all.

    Hugs and all that jazz.

    Jillyxxx

p.s. Sorry to hear about the delays for your Mum, Deebee, what a horrible let down. Hugs and good wishes to you both xxx

  • Comment number 93.

Caught two snatches of the ARF show tonight. The first being Paranoid, the second being Angus playing the stings of his SG during Whole Lotta Rosie. ARF goes Moshtastic!

  • Comment number 94.

Congratulations King Harry the Snapper - really made me smile when I heard your name!! I bet your friend whose name you use, would be thrilled to be a King!

Good weekends everyone - take care in the cold.

Congrats Harry on your achievement. You have shown promise and tenacity with your efforts and have worked extremely hard to reach your goal. Your next personal target is to become Emperor. I have recomended you to the Head for the Golden Book award at next assembly.

    Signed Teecher.

PS Did KatyM award you a virtual Crown rather than a hat?
