Don't believe a word

Simon Mayo|09:18 UK time, Tuesday, 28 February 2012

What Ho! Greetings from the (still neglected and mangy fox-ridden) estate which I will see precious little of this week. Hope all good with bloggers out there. I'm spending a day talking to assorted local radio folk about the book. I used to be at BBC Radio Nottingham and know what an important job local radio does. Thing is I only get 10 minutes with each, which means I barely get to swap humorous show biz anecdotes with each host before time is called. I trust they will be gentle. Then it's the Richard Bacon show on 5 Live and the return of the book panel that was my creation; books, author, and 2 reviewers. This time I get the grilling and I can feel my stomach tightening already. Who had this stupid idea in the first place? Oh right...

And eventually to R2 where Drivetime offers its usual stuff plus Guardian journalist Jonathan Freedland pretending to be Sam Bourne, his pseudonym when being a best selling author. Always enjoy reading and speaking to Jonathan, one of our outstanding reporters and, increasingly, one of our outstanding thriller writers. His latest is "Pantheon", a story rooted 'in one of the best kept secrets of the Anglo-American wartime elite' which actually makes it sounds less exciting than it is. Sam/Jonathan from 6 tonight.

And oldies please on the subject of EXERCISE. Tonight's Horizon on BBC2 claims you only have to do three 20 second bursts of intense exercise three times a week to feel the benefits. Wow. 3 mins a week? Don't believe it for a minute but let's run with EXERCISE for some tunes tonight.

Now I won't be on the show tomorrow (little book launch to attend) but will be back on Thursday.

Have a tip-top and not ho-hum Tuesday. See you after 5.

DT team, bloggers, DT dude and all of the Radio Wiltshire listeners who have inadvertently strayed off the normal channels (SM is on there this morning - I did try to listen, HONEST but dozed right off...sorry)

I Teeted Olivia Newtron Bomb, but am not expecting a mensh, more a 'collective mensh' as we are too numerous to mention...also lost the plot a bit and suggested

The Floyd's US & THEM for the line 'short, sharp, shock' plus the unlikely 'FITTER, HAPPIER' by Radiohead and threw in a Kate Bush 'FEEL IT' for good measure..

Anyone know who's sitting in the hot-seat tomorrow?

Wonder if there is a dress code at book-launches (esp for the author) so will the DT Dude need to get out the 'smart casual look' again (a crease ironed down the front of jeans does NOT count Mr Mayo!)

THREE NIGHTS A WEEK by FATS DOMINO

at only 1min 44 seconds, the perfect song for the theme and that difficult little slot just before the news at 6 :0)

  • Comment number 41.

    Morning all !!!

Hubbs has taken a reletive for an appointment which means one thing...

I get to go on the computer !

Seems weird being sat here during daylight, I usually have to cram the checking of emails and the like in between 8.15pm and 8.30pm when cherubs bedtime reading takes place. I 'could' stay on a little longer after that but its difficult when he's sat on the couch patting the seat beside him saying 'come on hunny, lets watch something together' (usually one of the counless CSI's we have on the hard drive)

    Anywho,

    How are you all?

I gave up chocolate for lent last week, and am currently trying to run after the 'wagon' so that I can try jump back on it, having fell off it in an alarming manner last evening. (truly it was spectacular)

Time to read back now and think up a song before hubbs returns.

    Coffee time!

I checked the Radio Cambridgeshire schedule for today, but no evidence that our esteemed leader will be appearing...

#34 #36 I did wonder whether Simon gets to keep his Blockbusters outfits - and if so, what other occasions he would have to wear them.

Liza Tarbuck is sitting in tomorrow - she mentioned it when she was doing ARF a couple of weeks ago to one of her callers, who'd said they loved hearing her on the radio. I wondered at the time if it would be something to do with Simon being off to promote his book. Richard Allinson tweeted a couple of days ago that he had flu (poor lamb!) so he probably wouldn't have been able to do it anyway.

    Long Distance Runaround - Yes

Off to a gig tonight, Kathleen Edwards at the O2 Academy in Islington. A double first, first time seeing Kathleen (big fan since her first album) and first time going to that venue.

    Just saw a green box.

  • Comment number 48.

#45 Ken, we were supposed to be going to the O2 in Islington on Saturday to see the Bohemians. I don't think we'll be able to make it though as we'll (hopefully) be going to Dorset to look after Mum post-op, but our Son is still planning to go. Must admit I didn't even know Islington had an O2 until he told us about the concert...

    ~X~

  • Comment number 49.

Good morning Simon, Team, NYM, Matt from BAIU and fellow blogpoppets!

Apologies for my absence. Been busy busy with country living.

The paddock birds are still unidentified and I am unable to find my bird book cos Ziggy has moved all the boxes in the garage. On the nature theme, we do have 2 fat rabbits in the paddock, keeping the pheasant and unidentified birds company. We also seem to have moles burrowing under the Captain Jack Memorial Patio which is most annoying. And then we found a dead rat in the water butt. (Ziggy has removed it).

Over the gloriously sunny weekend, we finished the paths in the veg garden (35 bags of shingle), cleared the area where the greenhouse is going and moved the potato bins. Yesterday was garden centre for seeds, fertiliser etc. Home grown veg is on the menu! A bit more than the allotted 3 minutes of exercise - will try to sit still for the rest of the week!

    Still no green box here!

  • Comment number 50.

I don't whether to apologise in advance for this or not but there's always:

BABY GOT BACK (aka I LIKE BIG BUTTS) - Sir Mix a Lot

  • Comment number 51.

Apparently Islington has two O2s, Deebee! The Academy (800 capacity) and the Academy 2 (200 capacity). They both seem to have the same postcode, I think they're both in or attached to the N1 shopping centre between Upper Street and Liverpool Road.

  • Comment number 52.

#49 Hi Alex! *waves* What a lovely scene you paint of your country idyll!

#51 Confusing... I'd better warn Son in case he goes to the wrong venue!

  • Comment number 53.

3 mins coffee break. Does that count for the week?!

    CARDIAC ARREST - Madness

Shouldn't really joke about these things, but I can't imagine there'll be another theme where that can be suggested.

  • Comment number 54.

#52 Will if he does go to the wrong Academy at least it's quickly and easily resolved :-) Not like going to the wrong Gillingham!

  • Comment number 55.

#36 That would have been lovely, RA's melifluous tones

RE 'Blockbusters togs re-used for the book launch' - Ah, now we know why he had to buy nice shoes for BB although BB involves sitting behind a desk....

DT book club is for grown-ups books, I think - and SM's book is aimed at 11-13yr olds, having said that, look at the Harry Potter success and not all the readers were kids!

#41 CHOCOLATE that is a tricky one to give up - Mr e came back from a work trip to Belgium with a box full of gawjus dark ones, and I made the mistake last night of eating the very largest one before bed as I had got in so late from work as a treat (I could feel it resolutely refusing to be digested!....) Mr e thinks we should throw out the 'menu' so not knowing what we are choosing but that in my opinion is ANARCHY and the way that civilisations crumble, but it's just IMHO.

#43 Ah, ok so a day off blogging tomorrow, if Liza is in the seat...we should think of a game to get us thru till Thurs am - any ideas?

  • Comment number 56.

#53 a very interesting lecture I saw here by a Prof who specialises in Human Circadian Rhythms (that's the body clock to you and me) told us that if you are going to have one (a heart attack) it is most likely to happen between when you get up in the morning and midday...this Prof was quite a portly chap and looked fairly unfit - and admitted to breathing a sigh of relief when he made it to midday every day....this only applies to day-workers of course, perhaps for night-workers, the same is true of midnight!

#52 Hi Deebee! It IS an idyll - apart from the dead rat, of course! Will be thinking of youand your Mum tomorrow. I should be able to pop in here in the morning but will be heading up to London at lunchtime for the interview. Have done my prep so ready as I can be.

#55 A game for tomorrow? As Lord Ammo is away promoting his book, perhaps we should set our own theme. How about ITCH?

  • Comment number 59.

#55 Suzieeeee, a game for tomorrow? Or today?

"3 mins a week? Don't believe it for a minute".

I'm assuming, although I haven't seen the programme, that some scientist has done her/his research and s/he has reached an evidence based conclusion to support the notion that 3 x 20 second bursts of exercise, 3 times a week is all we need. If not, why is it on Horizon? And yet, because Simon is a regular at the gym, he can't bring himself to believe that he's been wasting his money all these years and the conclusions can't be correct.

So, let's take our lead from Simon's blog today. Perhaps we could all list the things we resolutely dis/believe despite evidence to the contrary?

P.S. #49 Alex, I seem to have more than my fair share of green boxes so I'll put one in the post ;-)

  • Comment number 64.

Speaking off exercise, am off now to my 'Skiptrix' class...short sharp busts of skipping exercises, interspersed with floor work (abs, gluts etc) and weights with lunges...only 45 minutes but the hardest class I have EVER done.

It's ok, there are showers, but I am amazed some of - no all my classmates go back to work without showering...eeugh...

So if we were all to rise up and do 20 secs of star-jumps say, three times a day - there maybe comments made in the office...that's why most folks add their 'exercise' time up and do it all at once, in a gym, in the right clothing!

#74 JBG I have occasionally wondered what 'The Machine' was in Florence and The Machine... and now I know, it's a rowing machine!! :o))

I have just got home from having a quick lunch with a friend at a local hostelry and it's 17 degrees outside and feels quite warm considering the abundance of snowdrops and crocuses as well as quite a few daffs around, so I hope it's nice wherever bloggers are.

I called at the garage on my way back and treated myself to some cookies and cream ice cream that's softening nicely, ready for me to tuck in with a teaspoon! I wish I had more willpower to scoop some out into a dish rather than eat it out of the tub! ;o)

I do read the blog, even though I don't get much time to play on here these days.

Haven't given anything up for Lent; Mr from Eastleigh has given up tomatoes and cheese (he doesn't eat either and always makes it his New Year's resolution not to do so).

    Afternoon all!

Ziggy and his mate have just about done the garage roof - hurrah! No more water pouring onto our boxes.

Had a lovely afternoon of pottering. The seed potatoes are now chitting away in the cat litter tray (one that is obviously not in active use. That would be yucky). The earth the moles piled all over the patio has been moved. Good chat with the neighbour over the fence which led to us both poking round our gardens with bamboo canes, trying to find the mole runs so that we could test Alan Titch's deterrent (flooding). Our moles just seem to make piles of earth - we couldn't find a run anywhere. Glad we couldn't be seen - 2 middle aged ladies poking holes in their gardens whilst muttering madly about "bloody moles". Then had play with the cats in the garden before coming indoors to prep dinner (home made minestrone soup with shop bought ciabatta).

Harry, you are being naughty again!

No ONJ as the opening theme tune? Surprised!

#12 Billie... your Thin Lizzy song was first and what's the word you use if you don't get a mench? Bechod? ;o)

#92 Alex, Simon's maybe saving his favourite until the end!!!

Well done Jilly for Take That, but for Billie, yet again... Bechod!!! ;o)

Much praise for Jilly, and much alignment for Billie, but Double-Bechod for the OSM! And Bechod again for missing a TT mensh. And one more Bechod, just because.

    And nice 3WT, Florence!

#92 Alex - try cat poo against the moles. And if you can't find their run, just scrape away the hill until you discover their hole. (No sniggering at the back, please) And wear gloves, as they can smell your skin.

Or you can try and procure dog poo or fox poo.

it works by sticking to their noses, which they hate, so they go away to ruin someone else's garden!

    (Very odd "exercise" tunes, imho)
