The terrible 2s.

Simon Mayo|09:39 UK time, Wednesday, 11 January 2012

The thing about waking at 4.40 is that you have so much time to enjoy those early morning delights: Alex Lester, the odd bird or two, a throbbing head, that kind of thing (I am not equating Alex with a headache, it's just that these things coincided today). Then it'll be lunch at 11, tea at 3 and late night drivetime at 5. Then bed by 7.30. I'll call it jet lag and pretend it's exotic. I had spent the evening seeking advice from a top author about the world of publishing, just a few hours after some student radio enthusiasts had been asking me for some wisdom to help them on their way. Receiving and dispensing careers advice is a strange thing- it always reminds me of our careers teacher at school. He was spectacularly terrible. He had a little box full of file cards and he would rifle through them and tell you that maybe you could be a civil servant, teacher or fruit seller. Whatever dreams you might have had going into the room, you certainly lost them before you left. I assume that's all changed now. Anyone get good career advice? That worked or was inspirational? Tell us all...

Today we go all regal with Jenny Bond on the show. She was the BBC's Royal Correspondent 1989-2003 and is hosting 'A Celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee' concert tour across the UK. It's an evening of 'much loved music from across Britain'. Well I think we should join in. And do ROYALTY tunes. KINGS, QUEENS, PRINCES and PRINCESSES. And flunkys, ladies in waiting, crowns, palaces and thrones. You get the picture.

Oh, happy birthday to us. As Chris had just pointed out, his show and therefore Drivetime (and this blog!) in their present incarnations are now 2 years old. Well that's gone all right then. Well done all!

Have a successful and accomplished Wednesday, see you after 5.

Maybe Katey could do a massive cake for us all!

Congrats to all who got menshes yesterday and I was chuffed to nuts to get my 1st 2012 mention!

Careers advice? initially at age 5 i wanted to be a teacher...at 14 i wanted to work in a bank.....once i started to watch Brookside, Amanda Burton as an Accountant made Accountancy sound sexy because she was dealing with sexy handsome men..( life does not imitate art!) and therefore Accountancy was the route I took and now a qualified FCCA since 1996. I was not allowed to choose subjects for my options which were creative because the teachers wanted me to do more academic subjects. ( Geography instead of Drama!)

Re careers advice - I went to see an adviser just before leaving school. We discussed my interests, abilities and 'O' level (remember those?) expectations after which he asked if I'd considered joining the police. I was slightly surprised at this suggestions as I'd indicated I was interested in something along the lines of graphic design. When I asked if something in my profile indicated I would be particularly suited to this sort of work he turned to me and said, "Well, you're quite tall, aren't you?"

Careers advice .... a thorny issue if ever there was one.... as well as being a teacher of Economics and Politics A-levels my offical job title is actually Head of Sixth Form and Careers. I make no bones about the fact that I do a lot in relation to the 1st part and very little in relation to the "careers" bit. I do get students coming to talk to me and wanting advice but my tack is generally to think about skills and then send them off to read some books and look at a few software packages.... there are so many 'careers' these days that you can't just pick out 'civil servant' or 'police' and hope for the best!

For myself, I wanted to be a teacher (assuming of course that I wasn't going to get anywhere with "rock-goddess / oscar-winning actress") from the time I was 7, it took me a while as I got distracted by other things but finally did a PGCE in 2000/01 and haven't looked back since. It can be frustrating and difficult at times, but it really is the best job in the world!

KING OF WISHFUL THINKING by Go West

First choon that popped into my head. It was used in the film Pretty Woman so I am now picturing Julia Roberts sauntering down Rodeo Drive.

#8 Zoe, Broken bed in the middle of the night? ***snigger***

#46 Mandy, Let me get this right - you are an accountant because of Brookside?

#48 Nadine, Yes I remember O levels. Your post also rang a bell with me because I went into my careers teacher's office and told him I wanted to join the police but he told me I wasn't tall enough. He clearly felt bad about bursting my bubble because he made a mark on his door frame where the required height of 5 foot 8 inches (I think) was then instructed me to come back each month to be measured. I never made it past 5 foot 3 inches but as it happens I did apply some years later when the height restriction had been removed and I did get in - but then changed my mind.

Re careers advice: I went to a grammar school and according to the careers adviser there were basically 2 choices - go to University or go into the Civil Service. By the time I'd done my A levels I'd had enough of education so I did the latter. Spent a mixed 6 years (sometimes very happy, sometimes dreadful) at the Home Office before moving to Cambridgeshire and getting a personnel job in the private sector, where I discovered HR is where I really wanted to be as I love dealing with people and I'm apparently not bad at it! I think these days it's very hard for youngsters as there are almost too many career choices. And not many people have a lifelong career either - most people starting out in the world of work these days will probably have two or three in their lifetime.

What a wide choice today as people have already said. Think I'll stick to my one suggestion earlier unless I can think of anything else that no-one else has - very doubtful!

I wanted to be an air hostess when I was about 14. By 15 I'd given up on that idea and was pushed in the direction of university or teacher training college, neither of which I wanted to do. I wanted money!!

So went to technical collegeand did a nursery nursing course where I worked one week and went to college the next - and got paid £11 a week! Wow!

I think I was seen as a failure at the girls grammar school I attended.

After qualifying and working for 5 years I then decided I was ready for teacher training and went to college again.

And absolutely loved teaching reception class children for 20 odd years.

Great job - a shame it was spoilt by endless and pointless paper work - heigh ho.

On the careers thing, I always wanted to be a teacher - Primary school. I was 2 years into my B.Ed when I discovered I hated it.... with a passion. I tried to change courses and do History of Design, with a view to working in museums but the Uni careers advisor counselled me to stick with teaching. I did, still loathed it and went into Financial Services when I graduated. Never looked back. I love what I do.

Mind you, the teaching did come in handy. Three days after marrying the first Mr P, we moved to Brunei for his work. I couldn't get a work permit so started providing tuition to children. It really took off and I ended up running a mini school for expat kids who arrived in the country mid-term and couldn't start at the main school. So, it did come in handy in the end.

    Nice cakes, Katy! Thank you!

Good morning Simon, team and poppeteers,

Survived a visit to the hospital this morning (just for some routine tests) but waiting about with a lot of decidedly sick looking people has made me come over all peeky, lol.

A nice cup of tea and some cake - thank you Katy - is just what I need now :)

So, Happy Birthday Drivetime! As I said earlier on the previous page, time really does fly when you're having fun. I love having the show as part of my daily routine and find myself feeling put out when my listening pleasure is interrupted, especially during a 'good bit'.... the middle of a mensh, the confession or one of Simon's fab interviews. Maybe I could get a bolt fitted on my new kitchen door and just lock myself away between 5 and 7 every day, lol ;)

Like others have commented, 'tis a very broad theme today and as such don't think I will add my two penneth to the great tuneage already suggested. Especially after I was lucky enough to get a mensh last night.

Our 'careers advisor', a misnomer if ever there was one, was quite frankly a waste of space. My sage advice, because I was one of the brighter pupils in a run down, under-achieving, inner city school, was to try and get a job in an office or if I set my sights really high, a bank. His advice to the less academic was to try for shop assistant and to the rest.. to stay out of prison, if at all possible.

I had dreams of being a Lawyer but Further Education was just not an option at the time. The closest I came to my dream was getting an office junior post at The Law Society (a step in the right direction I thought) at the princely salary of £3,000 a year! Oh but it came with perks too... 15p a day in Luncheon Vouchers, lol. Alas, my time there was very short lived as I was bored beyond belief and the people I worked with seemed to shrivel my spirit with each passing day. So, I went out and found another 'office job' and how thankful I am of that because it really changed my life in so many good ways :)

Anyhoo, I waffle! Out now for a long walk with the hound to make the most of a really lovely day here.

WE ARE FAMILY - SISTER SLEDGE

Nice to hear Sammy Davis Jr and "Mr Bo Jangles" - such a sad song. I was given a Best of Sammy D for Christmas. What a huge talent he was. Over-shadowed by the Rat Pack, I actually think he was the best of the bunch in terms of breadth of talent.

All is not well in Paradise. Just had my grocery delivery and my bottle of Famous Grouse was smashed. Dis-AR-ster. Village shop shuts in 15 mins and it is a 20 minute walk so I am whisky-less for this evening. :(

    ooh ooh controversial one...

OUT OF TOUCH - Daryl Hall & John Oates

Play it if you dare (and wave goodbye to the knighthood, Simon.)

Which leads me to another one...

SAY HELLO WAVE GOODBYE - Soft Cell

(As Jennie Bond will confirm they're the key ingredients for any royal walkabout). Am sure Marc Almond was thinking this way when he penned the song.

Oh, and here's another one which was cruelly overlooked for the FIELDER theme on Monday, but is also strangely appropriate for Her Royal Highness...

HAND IN GLOVE - The Smiths

  • Comment number 77.

76 - I think that should have said "Her Majesty" instead of "Her Royal Highness". What's the difference? And who cares! Where are all the pendants when you need them?

Careers advice? I didn't get any advice about careers as such. I was advised to get 'O' Levels and then select 'A' Level subjects according to the results before applying to one University (in case I got my expected grades) and one Teacher Training College (in case I didn't). Most of the students in my class who went on to teach did it because they didn't get the grades to attend their first choice university.

There was no advice on what to do if a young girl from the Comp around the corner came along and distracted me from studying until it was much too late.

Oh, and I don't regret a single second of the time I spent missing revision :-)

#69 #70 One thing I knew I didn't want to do was teach... Partly due to the fact that my Mum was a primary school teacher and although she loved it, it was incredibly hard work at times - she mainly taught in small village schools, often with quite a mixed age range. And 'special needs' hadn't been heard of in those days - some children were just labelled 'difficult', there were no extra facilities for them and Mum had to cope with any challenging behaviour the best she could without any assistance.

I briefly toyed with the idea of becoming a lawyer - until I realised that I'd need all A grades to even stand a chance of studying law at university.

#72 Jilly, I love the idea of a bolt on the kitchen door. Mr B works from home at the moment - he does like to come and chat to me around 6 o'clock, which is when he tends to stop for the day. He asks me which songs I've suggested, and then talks over Simon giving out the menshes... Hmm...

Afternoon all - I have to agree that careers advice in my girl's Grammar School was patchy to non-existant. They just seemed to encourage us all to stay 'on the tramlines' and get more and more qualifications. Hindsight being a wonderful thing I should have got out after I peaked with my O-levels. It was only after I left school did I discover I liked computers but due to chronic underfunding my school was the last in the county to be given one.

I enjoyed cooking and gardening but was told they would never be serious careers.. *adopts accent* I coulda beena Nigella - I coulda beena contender.

Erm - I think I'd better have some more fruit and a lie down.

Yucky drizzle here at the moment so am confined to a wet weather play time :(

I don't recall ever really having any careers advice at school. I'm sure I must have had it (doesn't everybody?) but it obviously didn't leave a lasting impression. Never really had any fixed idea of what I wanted to do career wise either.

I fell in to the world of publishing (the production side) at 16 and I'm still at it now.

    A few last choons ...

    ARTHUR'S THEME - CHRISTOPHER CROSS
