Rivers of cheese

Simon Mayo|09:36 UK time, Thursday, 12 January 2012

Hi there bloggers, a happy Thursday to you. A merry school run finished in under an hour through the sparkling and pristine streets of old London town. Happy children who hadn't argued once all journey or forgotten their kit or maths books thanked me profusely as they leapt from the car, eager for another day of academic and sporting stimulation. Cheery bus drivers waved as they behaved courteously and charmingly to all and prosperous shop keepers offered generous terms of credit to all who passed.

Well I think that's what happened but I might have blocked it all from my mind. A day of promise on the way but will need to tell Rebecca, who was continuing her grumbling about the first monarch of England all night (on Twitter you understand, we don't all live together in a Drivetime house-that would be too weird) to move on. Offa of Mercia. Get over it. Even if it wasn't.

Meantime book 2 writing continues albeit in a haphazard way. "Itch" is out in March but the second one needs to be in by the summer and ITS ONLY SLIGHTLY STRESSFUL. I'm only 16,000 words in and most of the heavy loading is yet to happen. Too many distractions. Like this blog for example. Need to switch everything off and live in the shed.

Now Nigel promises a flaming Pecorino today. I have no idea what this will involve but assume it ill be that hard cheese made from ewe's milk and a flame of some sort. And a visit from health and safety. Don't miss it!

And oldies today please for THE NATIONAL TRUST. It is their birthday today (b1895) so let us salute the fine work they do by your tune selection. Their motto 'For Ever, For Everyone' is pretty unbeatable really.

Have a well preserved and enchanting Thursday, see you after 5.

#50 ponyclubmum I know exactly were you are (but not in a scarry stalker kind of way!). We've visited both those properties a number of times over the years. My favourite house in that area has to be Coleton Fishacre though. A lovely intimate Arts and Crafts house with lovely gardens that run down to the sea on the South Devon coast. Well worth a visit if anyone is in the area!

While I'm singing the praises of the NT I might as well also mention that they have a wonderful range of holiday cottages available. We've stayed in a few, from a small cottage on a Cornish quayside to a family break in a manor house in Somerset.

    Today's kitty offering: a sparrow.

It's like having an advent calendar on the blog, isn't it? Bet you are all waiting with bated breath until I report on the days cat kill.

We are NT members and try to make much use of it. The bolt hole was on the edge of the Scotney Castle estate and we had many happy hours of walking there. We are very close to Sissinghurst and those gardens are an inspiration. Smallhythe Place, home of Ellen Terry, is close by and is fascinating. Long live the NT!!

#76 Lilac, I don't think Lord Ammo would have had as many rejections for his book as some writers .......... I think you'll find doors open more easily when you're the presenter of a national radio show.

    #81 Shona ............... LOL

I am going to whisper this as I might be evicted from the blog:

    * I find Coldplay a teeny tedious *

Looking up local gigs yesterday, I found a band called The Moderators playing this weekend? Would that be our very own Modders?

Alex, just before the christmas break, my sweet little 'cat noir' delivered to the patio a RAT.

It was of course far too big for him to snack on so there it lay for 3 days till hubbs was home during daylight hours and able to remove it to the bin. Every time the cat walked past across the patio, he glanced at it with the look 'Oh really, I couldent touch another thing'.

'Cat noir' and the 'fangless one' dont exacly get along, have you any tips?

Talking of NT properties, has anyone visited Lundy Island? I went there a few years ago and thought it was wonderful, and I think I've previously waxed lyrical about the Farne Islands, also owned by the NT.

I thought, considering you had had so little sleep, Simon, that you sounded remarkably bright and bouncy on last night's show. I, on the other hand, having had very little sleep, felt like the un-dead by teatime last night!

#83 Alex - Sparrow - dead or alive?

#85 Harry, right now hubbs would settle for an agent to fight his corner. Hes getting shafted right left n centre. Nobody want to know you unless you have the book, the sequel, the movie plan, and the tie-in.

Ok, I've found it - if I get modded, you'll know why!!

Annoyingly, he wrote the outline 15+ years ago, before JK Rowling came along and blew the wizard/witch genre out of the window....

#79: best thing about membership of NT is all the parking you can have for free as NT own vast tracts of land at some of the most beautiful places in the UK (Minsmere nature reserve, for example). No House to visit, but Views from an old lighthouse, Wildlife and a great cafe!

#83 Alex_G, when I was growing up in Kent I used to visit Sissinghurst Castle regularly with my parents.

#93 Gill, were you on the blog when Baxter&Bertie was around? He works for a children's publisher and we had a similar discussion when Simon had a sleb on promoting her book. I'm making no comment on the quality of Simon's book; I haven't read it and it might very well be brilliant. But, there's no doubt that being in the public eye can make the acquisition of a publishing deal that much easier.
