Happiness cont'd.

Simon Mayo|09:20 UK time, Tuesday, 10 January 2012

First coffee shop blog of the year and everyone is looking really fed up. Utterly miserable in fact. Ok so it's dark wet and gloomy outside but there are many reasons to be vaguely cheerful. Longer days (as noted), many a merry blogger to send you on your way with a spring in your step, lovely mild weather, T. Henry esq proving that 34 is NOT OLD (ok I have mixed feelings there admittedly) and no one has stolen anything from me for a week. There. Not the most impressive list and certainly nothing to rival Ian Dury's but it's a start. Feel free to carry it on...

Yesterday Steven Spielberg was, you'll be reassured to know, a gentleman and a delight. The most successful movie director in the world showed them all how to do it, and spoke with warmth and humour about his latest film "Warhorse" and some of his extensive back catalogue. You can hear that on Friday's film show on 5L.

Today we welcome Michael Brunson, former political editor of ITN to talk "The Iron Lady". He turns up in the movie briefly and features in a documentary DVD of the same name. I worked with Michael on Prime Ministers Questions a few years back now and his insights are always worth listening out for.

And for oldies today I think the start of the final series of DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES is worth your efforts. I was tempted by the new high speed train link but that might wait a while. Especially as no one is going anywhere till 2026. So DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES it is and that not-so-quiet suburban lifestyle can come under your musical microscope (I know that doesn't quite work but it'll do for now).

Have a cheery and smile-filled Tuesday. See you after 5.

'Reasons to be cheerful' eh? That would make a nice ARFO, methinks (nudge nudge wink wink)

BIG THANKS to Harry the Snapper for passing his passion around - about Joe B and Beth Hart - Mr e is now hooked and listening all the way to Londinium and back on his daily commute on the coach!

Only downside is he USED to nap on the coach, so now is asleep on the sofa at 9.15pm, missing some of the 'Illuminating' prog about the Illustrations in ye olde bookes of yore. Ho hum.

    Re theme:

Only saw one episode of Desperates (having been one myself, it didn't have much appeal!!)

Well & I did have a mensh yesterday, so won't be greedy and just want to offer up 2 suggestions (unless divine inspiration strikes - unlikely as I had no sleep and am full of cold)

Maybe 'BEHIND CLOSED DOORS' BY Charlie Rich (as opposed to Peter Andre, natch)

Afternoon all .. no idea about Desperate Housewives or why so many of you are suggesting Mother's Little Helper .. way over my head ..

Reasons to be cheerful .. leaving for work ten minutes earlier not only gets me ahead of the 'traffic bulge', but allows me time to park and walk the mile to work along a riverbank footpath (chilled start and end to my day + extra exercise) .. the waiter from the cafe found my handbag when I left it on the back of my chair and it was being looked after in the office .. we are down to the last tub of Christmas chocolates at home and I'm the only one who likes the left-over Bounties (other coconut-based chocolate products etc (but are there any others available?)) .. cheerful days indeed ..

What a drag it is getting old

    "Kids are different today,"

    I hear ev'ry mother say

Mother needs something today to calm her down

And though she's not really ill

    There's a little yellow pill

She goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper

#61, #77 - Most, if not all, of these medications are designed to suppress the symptoms rather than act as cures. The end result is that it can sometimes take you longer to get over whatever bug it is than you would do not taking anything.

Whenever I have any flu-ey or cold I make a drink with a bit of grated ginger, a generous teaspoon of honey, the juice of a lemon and top all that up with hot - but not boiled- water. Let it steep for a few minutes before drinking. If it's really bad I will add a crushed clove of garlic, which doesn't sound as tasty, I know, but it always seems to do the trick for me. And it doesn't keep you awake.

If only, Paul. She left mouse for me to dispose of.

In between all that fun, I have sorted out the kitchen cupboards - such fun! When we moved in, food products were just chucked in any old how. Now there is method and orderliness. AND I get to laugh at Mr P trying to find things.

This afternoon - more nettle removal? Empty another box? Curl up with Titch and plan the veg patch? Reasons to be cheerful indeed.

#81 thanks for the receeep, I'll be considering that later - the garlic wafts may well come in handy to keep the pests, vampires and the like away, if now't else.

    Reasons to be cheerful?

'Snowdrops out in the garden' :-)

ps #86 "curl up with Titch" - that sounds like something designed to keep the cold out!!

Afternoon from a frantically paper-stamping AofBDWDH gang member (#44 refers). Did you know wisteria flowers twice a year?

How about HEARTACHE AVENUE - THE MAISONETTES.

  • Comment number 90.

#89 Lady_S, I'd be happy if we could get our wisteria to flower once...

The theme to HOUSEWIVES CHOICE, a long-running Light Programme show. Most Drivetime listeners won't remember it (including Simon?)

    Happy New Year !!!!!!

Today life returns to NORMAL as I reclaim my home from the 'wise cracking' 4ft person who has been in-charge for the past 2 1/2 weeks or so.

    OH BLISS !

So back to work at the crossing for me this morn. Many-a cheery adult to be seen escorting grumpy children in new coats. At 7.30am my own dear cherub was to be found in tears at the breakfast table saying 'but im TIRED' (poor love).

A mini digger and a skip may now be required to assist tidying up in the house.

Good luck with the mench chasing, shant do any myself - just happy to be back :-)

Of all of these suggestions (other than my own of course) the one I wish I'd chosen is Backstabbers by The O'Jays. Quality selection.

Welcome back to normality Gill - it sounds as though you've had a busy few weeks. Mind you, I know how your little cherub feels - we went back last Thursday and I still haven't re-adjusted to the 5.50am wake-up call after nearly 3 weeks of 9.00am (or frequently later) starts! I'm afraid I'm not one of those souls like Simon who wakes with the birds come rain or shine; I can quite happily sleep through til mid-morning given half a chance - regardless of what time I go to bed.

Can I ask whether anyone here listens to the radio on their i-thing or other smartphone whilst on the move and can recommend an app. I use Tunein Radio and it's fantastic in situ but I don't usually listen to the radio while running as I imagine the digital signal will be a bit ropey. However it's clear that lots of folks do listen while walking dogs etc and I just wondered what medium they use to do so......

#89 Lady Stormrider, I think lots of flowers and shrubs have flowered twice this year, or flowered early and late and we've had a few snowdrops out for just over a week and I'm up north! My West Country sister has had them out for a while and daffodils too and was pruning back some roses last week!! The seasons in 2011 haywire were out of kilter and 2012 seems the same and I still have Lavatera and some big white daisies in flower that are against a wall and fairly sheltered, despite the strong winds of last Tuesday they have escaped! The grass is still growing too and if it stays dry, may get a trim tomorrow!

I hope all went well today for Mo. Also missing the Tooth Fairy xx

#92 Happy New Year Gill!! It's good to get back into a routine, isn't it. I'm intrigued by your 'wise cracking 4 ft person'... did you have a dwarf comedian staying with you over Christmas...?

#95 I also have Tunein, but I've given up listening to it on my dog walk as the signal disappears as soon as I get to the corner of my road, then reappears at certain points en route. I'd be interested to hear of any alternatives.

    #97 LOL!
