Reaching First Base
What ho! And a lovely week beckons (optimism lingers) and the Robins are singing. What a great start to the day when they are tootling away to mark the dawn. The spring dawn chorus has to be the most stunning noise in nature and I can't wait for the blackbirds to get going. A sign that the lighter days are here (even if it doesn't feel like it just yet). And on top of that, Chris is back at breakfast which is a very good thing indeed. Indeed as a politician spun his/her web of double speak on another channel, how lovely to shut the door on it and get some tunes going. It's the only way to be. Bird song and rock'n'roll is a life enhancing start to the day, particularly as insomnia has struck again and a certain bleariness can be expected.
Yesterday I got to see Warhorse, the new Steven Spielberg movie and epic is the word. It is everything you want it to be and you relax, knowing that with Mr Spielberg at the helm, all will be well. And I'm talking to him today for the movie show which is very exciting.
Today (as well as seeing the return of Rebecca) is the return of the Radio 2 Book Club and a top tale with first time novelist Chad Harbach's "The Art of Fielding". It is a baseball story, telling the story of one Henry Skrimshander (yes really) and how he lives with the repercussions of an inexplicably wayward aim. The lives of 5 people change for ever. Read a chapter here and then hear Chad from 6. And FIELDING should work for the oldies too. Essentially thats THROWING and CATCHING isn't it? And a bit of BOUNCING. In fact everything to do with BALLS (steady Prime Minister). You know what you have to do.
Have a clear-sighted and perceptive Monday. See you after 5.

Some of the song suggestions appear to be about cricket rather than baseball (mine included). Just saying...
I don't know much about baseball (isn't it a bit like rounders...?) but one of my favourite films of all time is the fantasty film 'Field of Dreams', starring Kevin Costner. If you don't know it, it's about a guy who hears voices telling him to build a baseball field, and a team of ghostly players then come and play on it.
#53 You never did that...?
For the ultimate in violent cartoon characters, how about the Bart Simpson's favourite, Itchy and Scratchy. Hasn't done him any harm. Oh, hang on...

Don't normally blog twice in on day but had to comment on Warhorse. A lot of it was filmed around Gutter Tor and Didsworthy Warren on Dartmoor, one of our favourite places to ride. We were able to walk up passed the film set which was fascinating. Neither my daughter of I can bare to watch the film however - even the trailer was too much to cope with. Delighted the film was made however as it has highlighted the plight of horses in the war. Some of the proceeds of the film are being donated to The Brooke Hospital, a charity set up by a former officer's wife who couldn't bare to see the plight of the poor horses sold to the Egyptians by the Army after the war. The charity still does excellent work in North/East Africa and on the Indian Sub-continent providing medical assistance to working animals, where their owners always through poverty and sometimes ignorance, leave them untreated to suffer and die.

MADONNA - THIS USED TO BE MY PLAYGROUND is about baseball.
Oh and #79 Ponyclubmum - I fully support what you say. Claire Balding did an article for 'The One Show' recently and it was really really sad.

At 13:45 9th Jan 2012, Queen_Autumn wrote:#5, #80 I went to see Warhorse on stage when I was over the in US in October, it was my Mum's birthday and very much her choice. I'd read the book years ago and to be honest I didn't think the play would live up to expectations so was very sceptical. However, I loved it and was blown away by the 'puppetry' horses - they were just amazing: I can't imagine how the live action can be any better, although as you say the cause is an excellent and heart-rending one and it's good that some of the (no doubt) significant proceeds will go there. I think it has a reputation as a real tragic tear-jerker though, and without giving away spoilers for anyone who doesn't know the story, it's not like that at all really, so if you're worried about that - read the book first.

#59, 70 Deebee & Nadine - I also love Field of Dreams - such a silly concept but well told. 'The Natural' is another fantasy baseball film with Robert Redford (just as he's on the cusp of fading out of his 70s beauty). I also like Bull Durham although it's a bit dated (more Kevin Costner). There's certainly a few baseball films around; I wonder why it's so much more 'filmic' than cricket?!

I don't think that Peppa Pig is necessarily a great role-model for kids, but then, as others have pointed out; many cartoon characters often indulge in behaviour that we wouldn't want our little cherubs to copy.
I don't really worry about my twins picking up undesirable habits from cartoons such as Peppa Pig, because they don't process things in the same way as neurotypical kids anyway, due to their autism. I had to laugh at the mother who's kid was demanding chocolate cake for breakfast (as per George Pig, Peppa's brother) I already have a son who won't eat anything but Jaffa cakes or mini rolls for his breakfast (frown on my parenting if you must, but unless you've walked in the shoes of an autism parent, you might not appreciate the battles over eating)
#63 That's funny, and also a bit sad... Yes, it's revealing sometimes, when people you can see have been damaged in some way by their past, parrot that phrase "Well, it never did us any harm."

Its only 2 minutes 20 seconds long so there's plenty of room for plain ol' Rubber Ball if needs be!
And I know The Cyrkle had the more recognisable hit but Cilla belts it out and theirs is a touch maudlin.

We have just noticed that Big Blue Persian wholooks like Les Dawson has lost her bottom incisor tooth. Not sure how or where. Guns look fine and it doesn't seem to bother her. Most strange.
Mr P back to work tomorrow. Will be strange without him.
Back in a bit.
