How Much Is That Doggie In The Window?

Simon Mayo|10:53 UK time, Monday, 30 January 2012

Well what a cheery Monday this is supposed to be! The happiest Monday of the year apparently! As the chill descends from the east (as ever) and a week of freezing temperatures beckons, the coaches, experts and PR gurus who spin this nonsense should be made to run naked around the Bullring being pelted with sherbet pips. Stop it now.

Friday night dinner party duties were successfully dispatched in the company of, amongst others, a PR guru and an esteemed BBC correspondent and a King Charles spaniel. I have this dog thing pretty badly now. Want one, need one. Can't have one. London not good. Allergy thing not good. And so I covet other people's dogs. Ideally I'd like to rent one for a while, just to see what happens. So while I should have been making polite conversation, I was talking to the hound. Fortunately he seemed to like my stories and banter, as long as I fed him crisps. It was an uncomplicated relationship.

Then on Saturday I cooked up a veggie feast for some veggie friends and managed to swap chicken for butternut squash without creating too much of a duvet raiser. Which is quite an achievement. And then it was gone and it was Monday all over again.

Today we welcome Lenny Henry back to Drivetime. He is starring in The Comedy of Errors at the National Theatre in London and doing a darn fine job too. He is playing Antipholus of Syracuse and when I saw the show, he was on top form. It isn't the first time he's starred in Shakespeare - his Othello was very well received in 2009 but its the comedy that really works. The silly accents, the body language and the slapstick are all here and we all loved it. Welcome back Lenny and if Dawn gatecrashes the interview again, I'll be ready this time.

Actually ERRORS and MISTAKES might work for some oldies tonight. This doesn't have to be gloomy of course, on this happiest of Mondays, as we learn from our mistakes and become better people (I think that's right). So here we go! Keep smiling! Have a cheery and optimistic Monday, see you after 5

Morning again everyone, on what is said to be 'Happy Monday'!

Simon, if you have allergies and want a dog, you could have a cute wee Westie as a friend of mine who suffers from Asthma has one and is not affected by her... I think it's something to do with the Westie needing to be clipped because it doesn't moult like most other dogs! Poodles are the same as are the sweet wire haired Dachshunds

    Morning all,

DT team, bloggers and dogpoppets and the DT Dude - in need of a dog loan for a weekend? (I know several friends whose pooches launch at their beds during the night who would be happy to let their hounds be dog-sat).

A caffeine-fuelled post from me today, due to the blog's tardiness, maybe the spelling/grammar/punctuation will be a trifle better than usual...we shall see.

A food-filled weekend for us too, a lovely belly pork dish cooked by Mr e Friday (pork was on the bone, and gravy made with an unusual amount of red wine - yum) then Mousakka (again by Mr e) - made with pork 'as we have some in the freezer' was actually nice, if lacking in the lamby-aubergine combo tast.

Yesterday it was my turn finally re-enter the kitchen and create Sunday lunch (with a 2 year old grandson hanging around my legs) - the tarte tatin tasted better than it looked, luckily so all was good.

Followed by watching the EPIC tennis match on HD - what a game!! I was exhausted for them, not least as it was 1am when it finished, Melbourne time.

    RE Theme, mistakes, errors-wise howsabout

PHIL COLLINS 'DON'T LOSE MY NUMBER'

KATE BUSH 'DON'T PUSH YOUR FOOT ON THE HEARTBREAK

or for those more relaxed about the whole mistake/error thang:

STEVIE WONDER 'DON'T YOU WORRY 'BOUT A THING'

Post mistake/error you could also recommend that people think about 'moving on'

    Several tunes with this title:

BAD COMPANY, BLUR AND GARY MOORE being in my ithingy collection.

    Good morning everyone

Hope all had a good weekend. Friday cocktail party was lots of fun - general response on the 'Lady Marmalade' was nice but strong, which is kinda how I like my cocktails! ;-)

I'm a relatively new dog owner (got a husky from dog rescue at the end of last Oct). We love her to bits but you do have to put in some time and effort. In fact going to submit an early 3 word Monday entry:

    'moulting husky - hairific!'

Surprised the poor girl ain't bald the amount of hair I've combed off her! All black clothing resigned to the back of the wardrobe for now. She loves new people so would be happy to hire her out anytime - just make sure you've got your walking legs on, though - she needs loooong walks!

Back in a bit with some theme suggestions.

    In need of l o n g walks?

That'll be why they are used on the Polar expeditions then...

I see a neighbour taking a Husky up to the park at the end of our road, which links up to Shotover woods via a wee path and a copse full of deer (& do wonder if a Husky would see the deer and think they are reindeer and he's made it back home!)

In London the DT Dude needs a wee dog (bald or short-haired) with very short legs who is happy with a 'round the block' walk morning and night (unless the DT Dude's estate is big enough for a dog to 'relieve itself' without ruining the lawn/trees etc!

My preferred pooch is a brown-eyed black labrador - no idea why, and his name would be Charlie.

#23 Nadine... Huskies are gorgeous... I dog-sit my son's two Huskies occasionally and I dare not let them into the garden without watching them or they fly over the wall looking for pheasants or birds and sadly they have had some as they are sooo fast. I think they moult a lot as they have two coats and obviously prefer the cold weather!

My son runs for miles with them every morning and night and he also has a three-wheeled scooter thingy that he harnesses the two Huskies to and they pull him along the lane where he lives and along the beach. He wanted me to have a go one day, but I declined as I was afraid I wouldn't be able to stop them and they'd still be going 15 hours later!

Here's a pic of the two of them and the one on the left my son got as a pup but the older one on the right was rescued and he's quite shy at our house.

Just been ruminating on this 'Happiest of Mondays'. How so?

Most of my work colleagues last got paid just before Christmas and will have to eke that out until tomorrow when they get paid again. During this period they will have financed Christmas presents and New Year Extravagances and shopped at the January sales.

On top of this, it's the last day before tax return deadline.

Maybe it's just the happiest Monday for PR gurus because it's the day they get paid for coming up with such nonsense...

I twittered 'ACCIDENTAL BABIES' by Damien Rice, also a little 'mistake' choon unlikely to get thru the DT choosers....

There goes one of his 9 lives - Florence, you are wise to be 'afeared....

  • Comment number 54.

#37 Hi Florence - what cuties! I've always loved huskies - they certainly are good looking dogs (in my opinion anyways). They're known for having a strong prey drive and to be escape artists, though. Ours will do anything you ask in the house but once outside you can forget it, she suddenly goes totally deaf. I intend to go running with her when I'm a bit fitter. You can also do something called bike jorging which is where you attach the dog to the front of your bike and they pull you along - she definitely needs more training before I try that, though!

#43 Lady Stormrider, seeing you mentioning how you fell over the dog and hurt your knee, last year a friend of ours who runs marathons as often as she can and thinks nothing of a 10 mile run first thing on many mornings, had entered the London marathon and had been out training for it and the week before the marathon, she set off from her house and as she came out through her gate, her Lab got out too and she didn't notice him and fell over him, breaking her leg and she missed her marathon and couldn't run for ages, which was hard as she's kind of addicted to running!!!

  • Comment number 58.

#50 Suzieeee with lots of eees, I'm sure my son would have loved to have been with your son at the Outward Bound centre in Canada with the Huskies but not going in the icy water!! His love of the Husky breed started when he was on holiday and went on a Husky safari and visited a place where they have loads of Huskies, especially puppies and I still have a pic he took at the time.

Sorry Harry- my mistake, I meant an exchange of intricately wordy but highly entertaining arguments- and in fact I've spotted my own typo 'at' should read 'a'. Zos.

  • Comment number 61.

#57 Florence - in a much smaller way that's what happened to me. But instead of a marathon I missed out on school sports day. Come to think of it, my doctor made the ERROR of not referring me to hospital to clean the wound out - hence the un-ladylike sight of scarring and grit in my knee.

#58 - a colleage at work is absolutely set on a Chihuahua. Her plan is to keep it in her hand bag and let it sleep in her filing drawer at work. I'm not sure if my suggestion of letting it sit on the car luggage rack and nod it's head will go down well.

  • Comment number 62.

My dog is very good at being in the way, especially when I'm cooking. I try to ban him from the kitchen, but he manages to creep back in every time the door is opened by a member of the family. I'm sure he's going to cause me to have a nasty accident one of these days...

#61 There was a dog at my MiL's funeral. It belonged to Mr B's nephew's girlfriend (now wife) - it was a miniature dachshund, and she had it in a carrier a bit like a big tote bag. She did leave it in the foyer of the chapel while the service was going on though.

#61 Lady Stormrider, my husband would agree that the best place for a Chihuahua would be on a car roof rack!!!! They're just not a man's dog and my friend with Violet the Pug says Chihuahuas are like rats on leads!!! Her Pug isn't too handsome but it's better than a Chihuahua!!! Sorry to Chihuahua owners and I hope Simon doesn't fancy one as the fox would have it for breakfast... or supper!!!

#62 Deebee, I like dachshunds as they are full of character and friends of ours have a wir-haired dachshund called Peggy who is cute!

And well done Mandy and Vildeen.

That bit in the middle of Oops was really weird - don't remember that at all.

Dogs? We went through a "must get a dog" phase a year or two ago. But then we saw sense. And most of our friends said "Have you gone completely &*%$£| mad?". (Insert expletive to your own personal taste) So now we just stroke other people's, and are happy we can go away at the drop of a hat! No offense to those who have them though - I was nearly one of you!

Well done Harry for 'my' mensh! As its you, I don't mind... ;o)

Well done to Vildeen, Mandy and Autumn_Gale too. I didn't leave the room when Britney came on, but I must admit I did turn the volume right down.

Lenny Henry is always good value!

#60 DMac, I'm so sorry! I've just re-read my response (@#56) to your #53. I really didn't mean it to sound so snotty. I should at least have included some indication that I was smiling.

#75 Deebee, did I get your mensh? Another apology due! What was it for?

So what appears to have happened is this. I had to go to a meeting before today's blog appeared, so I asked if someone could c & p my song suggestions. Which Harry and Flo kindly both did. It seems the NYM didn't look too closely at the posts and took my suggestions to be Harry's! Well, the lovely Harry doesn't get a lot of menshes, so please take it as a vicarious one, with my blessing!

#77 Does this mean we have a new award? To complement the Mensh and the Order of the Silent Mensh (OSM), do we now have the Order of the Vicarious Mensh (OVM)?

If so, who gets the OVM? Me or Deebee? ;-)

    Evening Poppeteers

Pah! Only heard Autumn_Gale's menshe today. What a busy day and the car was in for an MOT. I have been lying down in a darkened room since I received the bill for 4 new tyres (expensive!).

Love the doggie pics and would like to say to Simon that he can borrow my West Highland Terrorist anytime he likes - good luck!

Seems to have been a quiet blog today and hope to join in the fun tomorrow.

#79 Harry, what a good idea of yours to have a new OVM award!

Perhaps you and Deebee would like to share the first one!

Evening all, and I hope all is well in blog land. Most humble apologies for the lateness of my arrival. Seems to have been one of those days today.

Got to work and was promptly greeted with a chorus of 'my computer won't work ...', and so was straight in to business before I'd barely got my coat off (let alone got to blogging!), and it didn't really stop all day after that. Not the best start to the week :(

Then this evening to make things worse, I had to do my hunter gatherer duties at Tesco so only caught the briefest snippet of the show. Although that was enough to catch the mensh for Harry, well done that man, and a good choon to boot!

The blog looks a little sparse today, but I suspect that's due to Sirs late arrival! No doubt there's plenty on the end of Friday. I'm off now to have a trawl back through.

See you all tomorrow, end users permitting of course!

    Good Evening All;

I was hoping to pop in for a quick blog this morning, before the mister and I left for Harrogate. But due to the lateness of the new blog being posted, I just managed to tweet a couple of oldie suggestions before I left.

Well done to all who were menshed, whether in error, or not! I am claiming a couple of OSMs myself for Gerry Rafferty and Britney Spears... On second thoughts, I'll forgo the Britney one! (I remembered the cringe-making talkie bit, thanks to Jedward! They did a version of that song when they were on X Factor... )

I will join Simon in gazing longingly at other peoples cute doggies :( We discussed the possibility of getting a dog (one trained specially for children with autism) but in reality, it is going to be a big ask. We have the allergy problems here too, and the last time twin one came into contact with a dog, well, let's just say it didn't end very happily, for the dog.

Since Simon played that Gotye song last week, I can't stop listening to it, and I've been checking out (and loving) more of his stuff on Youtube. I particularly like 'Thanks For Your Time' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UvvkWd_dR4&feature=BFa&list=PL18116E8737E65375&lf=plcp I have spent a lot of time on hold to complain about certain electrical appliances recently. This song really illustrates why I suffer with call centre rage ;D

    Goodnight All xxx

    Dear Simon

I'd lend you my dog - small - not too hairy - but she takes great delight in rolling in fox poo, which might be a bit of a problem in your garden!

Oh and by the way, belated congrats to Mandy and Vildeen for menshes tonight - caught both of them whilst doing my usual Monday Wiltshire-drive-around. Also, to Deebee and Harry for the 'OVM'.

Hope you all have a good week.

Ps. Deebee, still keeping fingers crossed for your son x

    Good evening,

A very late visit from me. Been out to a meeting this evening and was busy with the toddler today. Dared to venture into the Rose that does not Wait with her. Always an experience. On the way back I once again nearly ran over Lee Evans who jogs around these parts in a black tracksuit. He's a lovely bloke but I do wish he would wear something more visible.

Congrats on all menshes. Travelling to/from Big Girl's swimming lessons meant I didn't get to hear all the show but did hear Autumn Gale's and heard Gerry Rafferty (but not the mensh). Always a joy to hear that voice whoever suggests it ;-)

There's one thing that puts me off dog ownership. Is it me or is it often the case that dead bodies are often reported to have been found by a "man/woman out walking their dog"?

    Good night.x

#82 Shona, I love a nice wedding and will try my best to concoct something a bit 'special' for Mr and Mrs Harry Snapper a bit nearer the time... or maybe I should start it now!!!

I can't imagine what it's like not to have a dog (or two or three) in the house because before I was married we always had two or three dogs at home from when I was a baby and the first thing I did when getting married was to get my own Basset Hound, from a retiring breeder, and she was soon followed by another Basset and we've never been without two or three Basset Hounds and for me, the house would feel 'empty' without them!

#87 Julia, I think the reason people walking their dogs sometimes find dead bodies, is that dog walkers, including myself, often walk along beaches, lanes and through the countryside whereas non-dog owners often don't walk anywhere and dogs run around or wander off through undergrowth etc and have such a strong sense of smell, that they can probably sniff a dead body from a great distance and a dog would probably alert their owner by barking madly to let them know that something isn't right!

If that's all that puts you off getting a dog, then don't walk one off the beaten track and you'll not come across a body! I've walked thousands of miles over the years with all of our dogs and have never ever found anything nasty, but what I have done when being out with my dogs is to have met loads of lovely people who want to stop and chat because of my dogs and I'm often told that people rarely see Basset Hounds around.

Some time ago when I was out with my dogs, two young girls (probably about 8 or 9 'ish) approached me and asked if I would walk along with them to where they lived because they thought a boy was going to follow them and being a bit wary, especially as kids are told not to talk to 'strangers' I asked them why they had asked me to walk along the raod with them, when I didn't know them and the older looking girl said that their mum said she trusted people with a dog and I must say if I'm walking along the beach miles away from houses and see a man on his own, I am far more wary than if he's with a dog!!!

Enough dog talk... but I do adore my dogs!

Crikey, I'm getting as bad as BINGO from over the fence, for long messages and didn't think it would be that long or that such a long message would post as people often say they have problems with long messages!!!

I'd better say nite nite if anyone is still up!

    Good Morning Poppeteers

Love reading the doggie stories! I used to love a brisk walk in the morning with the dog poppets before going to work but the 2 I have now don't surface until 11.30am normally so Mr W does duties as he works from home mainly. It's always a shock to doggie systems with a 6.30am wake up call is required when Mr W is away on business.

Hope to see you on next blog today.

    Morning everyone.

Fortuitously, if somewhat (unintentionally) selfishly, my mensh was the only 10 minutes of last night's show I managed to catch (late away from work, hospital visiting, supermarket all conspired against me). A v busy day in store today; teaching all day with meetings at both break and lunchtime. I will try and poop along when I've got my class going on something this morning but I doubt I'll get to catch up with last night's show.

Shona - hope you've recovered from the MOT bill - found myself in a similar position a few months ago. Sheeesh - they're only made of rubber, not gold!

    See you all later.

    Good Morning All

Grey and cold here again this morning. No white stuff yet though.

#85 Yes, my dog does that too Hoffs. And he hates the bath that inevitably follows!

#87 #88 I can honestly say that I have never found a dead body in all my years of dog walking. Not a human one, anyway... we've seen plenty of dead rabbits, and a few birds...

Flo, I couldn't be without a dog in the house either. When our beloved miniature schnauzer died I was heartbroken, and I didn't want to get another schnauzer as I felt it would remind me too much of him while I was still mourning him. But it wasn't long before I craved having a dog, which is why we got our fox terrier from a rescue home that specialised in that breed. And I agree about dog walkers being on the whole lovely people. Although there are a few exceptions - I'm not sure it was necessarily good advice from those children's mum that all dog owners can be trusted.

    ~X~

Deebee I'm glad that you also agree that a house seems empty without a dog and it's sad that they don't live as long as people as they are great company, get us out in all winds and weathers, great ice-breakers and bring so much companionship, especially for people who live on their own. It's good that you were able to rehome a breed that you are fond of... ours (and my parents) have always been Basset Hounds but a long time ago we also adopted a gorgeous older Cocker Spaniel from a friend who felt she couldn't give enough time for and he was so well behaved compared to the Bassets and he lived a long and happy life with us.

It's always sooo sad when they die and especially when it's an 'only' dog and even though we have always had two or three dogs, if we have lost one, the other/s also miss their old friend like we do and occasionally after we have lost an older Basset, a new Basset has either been looking for a home soon afterwards, or we have had a new pup, but we have always been happy to rehome an older Basset, when perhaps a marriage has broken down, people can't understand that Bassets are stubborn dogs and have a mind of their own, or the owners are out all day and feel guilty (or whatever reason)!

When we lost our beloved lovely old Sophie, we had always kept in touch with her breeder from where we used to live and he shows Bassets and only breeds when he wants a new show dog or a new blood line and he hadn't bred for three years but three days before Sophie died, he had a litter of eight Basset puppies and after choosing his male dog, he gave me the choice of the others so we got two because they would be ready in my birthday week and we have met several times since and he said he thinks I chose the best dog in Lucie as she is so placid and is big for a female.

When a dog that has been one of several in the home dies, I know that some dogs really pine for their lost friend and I this would definitely happen with my two litter sisters, especially with Lottie who seems to be the 'baby' of the pair and she has to be close to Lucie all the time and I realise what people mean when they have two bonded dogs, who they can't look after any more, and say they MUST be rehomed together and my two would be like that but there's no way that I could ever let any of my dogs leave home!

Regarding what I had said about the little girls saying their mum trusted people with dogs, I would presume she didn't mean all people and maybe she had said women rather than men for all I know and perhaps I looked 'trusting' to them but I would also speak very easily to a person walking their dog, but I would think twice about approaching someone without a dog... maybe it's because I have always had dogs around me and feel happy amongst them!

    xx
