Dear Diary

Simon Mayo|09:51 UK time, Thursday, 19 January 2012

Wow this is a wet one today and that was a tedious school run. All children exhausted and not talking much so left to me to jolly things along a bit. In the end had to resort to talking about the parents evening last night. Usually I miss these things as all schools arrange events around 5pm or 6pm thus discriminating against us late shift types. Not this time however, so the familiar round of 'remind me who the history teacher is again/shall we bother with the PE guy?' began (with respect to child 3's history and PE teachers who are beyond reproach).

Enjoyed yesterday's show with the highlights being Jack Bruce's reminiscenses and another chubby baby confession. I have no idea why this sets me off but clearly it has something to do with Matt's infectious laugh. As soon as he goes, it is usually just a matter of time before I do. This used to happen a lot when I did breakfast on R1 and then I blamed Jacki Brambles or my producer Ric who corpsed as readily as me. As evidenced by the fact we still love that Brian Johnson/Jonathan Agnew cricket clip from 1991, other people losing it is great fun for everyone, as long as you don't have to read the news anytime soon. We'll try again today.

Nige offers us a flavour of school dinners tonight with his very own rice pudding. Can't say it's an obvious hit to me but that'll be because it's filed alongside prunes and custard as something I don't care if i ever taste it again. 70's school dinners shaped so many tastes!

And oldies today. Let's try DIARIES. Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole celebrates its 30th anniversary with a special edition of the angst-ridden 13 and 3/4 year old. I kept a 5 year one from 75-80 and cringe whenever I look back at the utter rubbish I used to go on about (so much has changed, dear blogger). In fact BLOGGING could be included here really as it seems to fulfil a similar if not identical, function. Let's see what you make of all that.

Have a quietly successful and modest Thursday (let's not aim too high) see you after 5.

I remember reading the Adrian Mole diaries, I also recall watching the TV adaptation, I thought it was all very amusing at the time, but I've never gone back and re-read them. I saw an article on it the other day, I'll see if I can find it and post it on here.

    Hi Simon and everyone

I concur with the 5 year diary thing...yes reading back ....most entries were irrelevant drivel!

Thanks for the good luck wishes from Deebee and Shona with the interview yesterday, I find out today if successful. Only lasted half hour, apparently should not read much into this, it probably meant my interview was free from "irrelevant drivel" and succint and to the point.

    Oh well here's my entries:

    1. NOBODY'S DIARY - Yazoo

    2. DIARY OF HORACE WIMP - ELO

    Morning all,

DT team, soggier bloggers and poppets and the proud parent DT Dude (well, we presume proud, post-parents eve?)

It was a very wet dark morning slogging into work today, managed to drop 3 cards/letters out of my backpack that came open - then crashed the work website, so am waiting for booboo #3 of the day!

It's Mr e's birthday today, and for 30 glorious days he is 'technically' a whole year older than me!! He he.

He grew up in the southern hemisphere so is used to a lovely hot sunny BBQ round the pool kind of birthday - the UK does not provide that luxury in January I'm afraid.

    RE Diary, this might suit:

MR MISTER & 'BARE MY SOUL'

As that's what folks are supposed to do in diaries? I kept one 1971 - 1981, and included concert tickets, train ticket stubs, restaurant bills, and included momentos of my summertime in Canada at 15.....

My Mum threw them all out from where I had them stored (under my bed at theirs, of course).

    I WAS GUTTED.

A boring diary to re-read is better than only having them in your memory :-(

Have a nice day y'all, back later if I'm allowed out of the pooch-house at work

  • Comment number 49.

Here's that article on Adrian Mole https://m.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/jan/16/true-confessions-adrian-mole-addict?cat=books&type=article

I did briefly keep a diary during my teenage years, and I did start one when I got pregnant, but so many things went wrong that I didn't keep it up. I do have a blog now, which I find useful, and possibly helpful to other parents going through the same kind of things that we are.

I was supposed to be doing some decorating today, but the hospital have just rang, to tell us that twin two is very upset and they think he should come home today instead of tomorrow for the weekend.

So much to do, so little time!

  • Comment number 50.

Morning all bloggers, it's raining cats n dogs in ole London town - boo to rain!

Anyway, I absolutely loved reading The Secret Diary of Adrain Mole aged 13 3/4, there was also a very well adapted children's progamme. I agree the DIARY theme is hard - so I'm going with:

    'Teenage Kicks by the Undertones

    'Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus

It's a tricky one -okey dokey have a blameless day (I borrowed that phrase from Radio 2's Richard Allinson tee hee!!!! )

  • Comment number 51.

A chance to suggest one of my favourites from the pre-Beatles crooner era:

STORY OF MY LIFE - Michael Holliday

a man whose backstory is so impossibly sad it makes my heart heavy just thinking about it. At least he had a number 1 single.

It has one of the best romantic closing lines in a song: "I'd like to take you for my wife, so the story of my life can start and end with you".

Bacharach & David knew a line.

    Happy birthday to Mr e!

I kept a diary for a while. I used to fancy myself as a bit of a writer (one of these days I will write that novel!) so they were quite detailed. Probably all hokum though... funnily enough I stopped writing when I started going out with Mr B. No idea what happened to them - they probably got thrown out when my parents moved house.

I'm in the 'love rice pudding' camp - as children we used to have the tinned variety, with a dollop of jam strategically placed in the centre. And I have made 'real' rice pudding a few times - it's one of Mr B's favourites actually. Will be interesting to hear Nigel's take on it.

My Mum never quite mastered it so my Dad, who was also a rice pudding fan, went for the tinned version. When he died, I was comforted by the thought that angels eat ambrosia so Dad would be happy!

    #78 School dinners?

LEAST favourite pudding was 'Manchester Tart' (now then now, now then, order, order, it's not a slight against Mancunian laydees)

'Manchester tart' was a bottom layer of pastry (soggy, natch) a layer of cheap red jam (unknown fruit origin) covered with wobbly pink blancmange.

    DISGUSTING!!

Best pud? Cabinet pudding or treacle sponge (which was actually syrup, never worked that one out)

#83 Suzie - I love Manchester Tart's! Haven't had one for ages though, you can't seem to get 'em anywhere around here. Maybe it's a boycott because we are in Yorkshire, and we have to stand up for the Yorkshire Curd Tart!

    I meant to suggest...

PS Man, In yer blog above yer mention at the end... 'let's not aim too 'igh'.... Me clip of the plane... A think they are taking yer advice!!!!!!!!!!!!

PPS Nearly finished drilling me walls. and amazingly am still on me original drill bit after 6 'ours of drilling 'oles inter me walls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A bought 'alf a dozen not being sure if they would be enough as usually a burn out me masonary drill bits.... and after reading on the net aobut 'ow ter do a dmap proof course it says 'you'll need plenty of spare drill bits!!!!'

Me secret ter lasting success with a drill bit:

    1 - Buy a good quality one!!!!!!

2 - 'ave yer drill on 'ammer setting and 'igh speed is a no no no!!!!!!!!!! (too fast creates friction and will burn out yer bit... It needs ter grip and chew through the brick/ masonry!!!!!!! But not too slow either!!!!!)

3 - Me biggest tip.... A drill abit of the 'ole then a keep the moment a see abitta smoke off me drill bit... A dip it in cold water in a bucket (obviuosly only the end/ drill bit... Not the whole electric drill.... Or it will be you and the whole drill smoking!!!!!!!!!!!!)

And amazingly.... (In fact am amzed mesen that's why am writing about it)... Yer drill bit will last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talkin' of which am off ter destroy some more of me new old 'ouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Niceness ter each ;-)))))

#86 Zoe, Manchester Tarts? I'm quite keen myself ......................... ooops, should have read to the end of your post ;-)

There used to be a little sandwich shop behind the town hall in Leeds which made and sold the finest custard tarts. Wonder if it's still there?

PPS The depth am drilling is 10mm as me bricks are 11mm thick!!!!!!!!!

Some walls are two bricks thick and some one brick thick.... Which make sme realise am one brick short of being three bricks thick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Favourite school pudding - chocolate sponge with chocolate custard.

Least favourite school pudding - gypsy tart. A sickly sweet concoction consisting of a pastry base and a brown topping - not sure what it was but it was similar, but far inferior to butterscotch. I was about the only person in the school who didn't like it, so I was quite popular on the days we had it.

    #91 Custart tart - now you're talking...

Your versions of Machester Tart must've been far superior to the one created lovingly in my school kitchens by a cook who was more of a cordon bleugh than bleu

    #95 custard even...

BTW re the 'blogger Brian' mystery. I think the most likely explanation is that he was actually a tweeter/texter, and the list compiler just got his location wrong. Or am I stating the blimmin obvious...?

Looking at a diary and more particular this blog, how the mood and themes change is wonderful, when you log on you never know what you are going to find, except you are sure to get friendly banter and chat from a great bunch of people and advice.

For me in particular now being abroad I feel this offers me a daily link to the old country for which I am very appreciative.
