Unplug the photocopier

Simon Mayo|09:38 UK time, Wednesday, 14 December 2011

Second blog of the day, in a manner of speaking. Those Womble videos now there for posterity. I was amazed at the response-we had so many texts and emails from listeners who felt 8 years old again. Folk who knew all the words. Fans who had the singing mugs and pyjamas. Those Wombles made quite an impression. I think Orinoco was feeling his age a bit but I hope you enjoyed a little festive cheer.

Clearly I escaped Didcot in one piece- I was entertained by the good people at the Rutherford Appleton Lab who tolerated my daft questions with grace and tolerance. I now want my own synchrotron and proton beam accelerator for Christmas. This might be tricky without a generous government loan, so a book token is more likely (I am terrible to buy for as books and cds are in plentiful supply at work, no one is quite sure where to start).

It was the Drivetime Christmas meal last night, organised by Nigel B. Apologies were received from the Mother Superior and Sister Rebecca who had excuses of varying quality but with Dr Mosh and Dr Nosh (Nigel's new name for certain) at the helm, a successful year was toasted aplenty. Part time Pauline turned up too, full of fabulous stories from the financial unit. Those economic types are good company and tell you what's really going on out there-should you want to be really depressed at Christmas. Anyway, I think we should do OFFICE PARTIES for the oldie theme today (I did suggest the Higgs-Bosun oldies but was ruthlessly, if correctly, cut down). So the office do it is, even if you don't have one! I know many of you work at home so your office party consists of a glass of cider and a crisp at your computer-but you're included too.

Today we bring you Mother Superior's confession (where to begin?) and Dr Mosh's final mid-winter mosh (boom and then boom).

Have a healthy and germ-free Wednesday, see you at 5.

At last! Good morning second time Simon, bleary eyed team and wombling blogpoppets all.

Sorry for absinthe. No note I’m afraid, I’ve just had a bad few days with all sorts of things getting me down and although I’ve popped in on occasion for an injection of blog good humour to cheer me up, haven’t felt like or really had time to post. Anyhoo, I’m not going to dwell on negatives.. as the wise and lovely Katy said recently ‘this too shall pass’ :)

I loved Simon’s tweeted photo of the Drs Mosh & Nosh from last night – it looked like fun was being had ;)

We don’t have a work Christmas party which is such a shame – a wardrobe full of festive frocks and few occasions to wear them. Ah well….. at least there’s the blog party; I shall be dressed to the nines.

  • Comment number 30.

It's interesting how some interpret the theme more literally as one for party songs, whilst others see it as something where it could all go horribly wrong, or at least a bit raucous. I think it's clear which camp I fall into...

    THE POGUES - Fiesta

    STATUS QUO - Marguerita Time

RUN DMC - You Be Illin'

#19 Hi JillyM! Sorry to hear you've been having a bad time. I know exactly what you mean about this 'ere blog - sometimes you don't feel like joining in and it's nice just to lurk... And smile :o)

Our office Christmas party is tomorrow - the format varies quite a lot from year to year depending on who's organising it. We've had pantos, quizzes, games, sometimes just food and drink. This year we're having a band, and I've had my arm twisted to sing... not to sure about it to be honest, but we're practicing this afternoon so I'll let you know how we get on.

Wish I could think of a clever song to go with todays theme (or any days theme!) Not a very good lateral thinker!

Had an early Christmas present on Monday - Essex Care Services have given me a bath lift/chair so I can now have a bath! Sounds silly but it's one of the bigggest things I have missed since being affected by MS to this degree. Had a bath last night and it was GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!

Also Mr bought me a certain e-reader from a river company. (Sorry Harry!) I didn't think I would like it but it's very light to hold and doesn't make my arm ache which real books tend to do. Father Christmas has been around very early this year!

We've tweeted a few tunes already, and went for sheer, damned annoying party hell:

    ATMOSPHERE - RUSS ABBOT

MY BOY LOLLIPOP - LITTLE EVA

OOPS UPSIDE YOUR HEAD - GAP BAND

    and now add some more:

    AGADOO - BLACK LACE

SWING THE MOOD - JIVE BUNNY

    COME ON EILEEN - DEXY

HI-HO SILVER LINING - JEFF BECK

At least one of those to be played at a party or two over the next few weeks :o)

    Hello all,

How about: Yes sir, I can boogie by Baccara

#36 ever since the words 'xmas party' and 'photocopier' were first mentioned this morning in twitter-land, I've had a feeling that I am being watched - by the photocopier!!

We have a 'network' here, so you could end up sending your inappropriate photocopies of body parts to another office...yikes.

could be that DESMOND DEKKER has the appropriate tune for that eventuality:

    'WHERE DID IT GO'

Does not even bear thinking about.

One Xmas lunch already consumed today, and early evening drinkies/nibbles party in the Uni Dinosaur museum to come...could be an amazing place to have a few games - ie 'spot the dinosaur' plenty of those around these parts.

Meant to wish Lady_Stormrider a very happy birthday in my last post but was side tracked by another parcel being delivered! One more to go and Christmas will be sorted (as they say around here!)

    Remembering my manners ...

Thanks Flo for the card you left in the womblingblog - which broke before I had chance to see it. Also thanks for get well wishes and comments about blue Christmas lights.

I chuckled when you asked if I had blue lights in my bedroom... ahem!

For the record, I have NO blue Xmas lights but many friends have them. Especially outdoors, like PSL. I don't dislike them, per se; it's just that my interior decor is warm honeys and reds - electric blue just doesn't match. LOL.

Jennie - how wonderful to get a bath lift - they are really quite marvellous contraptions. I used one when I was recovering from my brain thingy and wasn't allowed to stand under a shower for a couple of weeks. It might seem odd to think of it as a Christmas present, but I completely understand why you should ... [and between you and I - yesterday I received one of those mini bagless vacuum cleaners which is so much easier to use than my huge vax and I'm really rather excited about cleaning the house for Christmas!]

MTF - beef stew? I should coco.

    When I'm feeling hungry again.

grumpychap - hello again. You seem very cheerful today.

    :^)

Sorry for be so late with the good wishes but:

    Happy Birthday Lady_Stormrider

Confession time .............. I'm developing a fetish for empty glass jars. It started off with re-cycling when we'd wash them and put them out every other Thursday for collection by the council. But now I don't like parting with them. I'm sure they're going to come in handy one day :-D

  • Comment number 71.

Just found a few minutes lying around, so I thought I'd use 'em on here. Firstly, many happy returns to Lady_stormrider . I hope you get a second scarf to help keep you warm (#50).

Also, Katy. The new HOIB is a work of genius. And thanks for my hat and scarf yesterday.

Suzie - that dodgy relationship twixt the office party and the office photocopier was highlighted by our very own AlexGirl last week when we were talking about having a blogparty.

I know, I know - it's such a cliche but I still find it ridiculously funny. Happy dinosaur spotting

#29 Katy... I thought you were the mistress of long lists... maybe it's catching!

#44 MTF... oh no, you've started me on that Womble song again!!!

#58 Jennie... I have just had one of those reader thingys delivered for my husband who is an avid reader, but whether he'll like it or not is another matter because I know he likes books and always said he didn't want an e-reader but I didn't know what else to get him!

#60 Gill... I'm just picturing your entertaining limp! Is it anything like the one I remember Norman Wisdom having, many moons ago? Hope it's better quite soon.

#70 Harry, you could paint pretty patterns on your jars with glass paint and drop a tea light inside!

    Happy Birthday Lady Stormrider

#70 Harry - ever heard that song 'Jar of Hearts'?!

#71 Paul y'welcome and looking forward to seeing what damage you've done to our scrabble game when I can get onto my desktop computer in the office [can't access it on this browser] ..

Blue christmas lights, that was what I meant to comment on. It is perculiar, as everything else pertaining to coldness and snowiness seems somehow very christmassy, and yet the blue lights cropping up hither and thither seem cold, and yet so harsh. Sort of wintery, but not quite christmassy. Each to his own, though.

  • Comment number 77.

#76 I know what you mean about the blue lights Paul, ours are like small stars and look quite nice - but I wouldn't want blue ones in the house - far too cold!

I meant to say earlier, HAPPY BIRTHDAY LADY STORMRIDER!

  • Comment number 78.

#75 Katy, never heard it but I've looked it up on Sp*tify and there are dozens of versions ............... listening to the one by Christina Perri now and it's very pleasant.

Following my suggestion at #1, I've been re-discovering Janis Ian all day.

  • Comment number 79.

I was listening to Richard Allinson on ithingy while doing my shopping and he had an email from Dirk Thrust!! He gets about, the boy!

#73 - Mr asked me ages ago if I would like an e-reader and I ummed and aahhed for a few days and eventually said 'No - I like real books' but apparently he had already ordered it so I got one any way!

You can still have real books but this thing would be great for holidays, travelling etc as it is so light.

I've got blue lights on my tree indoors and have never thought about them looking cold - mind you they are hidden under garlands of thick silver tinsel so perhaps that warms them up a bit?! They look ok to me.

Talking of christmas lights. Kev (tricky tree) has twittered a mosh request to the Doctor for Wizards Of Winter by the Trans Siberian Orchestra (which I'll gladly second here). This led me to discovering this...

#56 Deebee. I'm pretty much the same as regards lists. I tend to go for a few curve ball suggestions rather than a brain dump, but that's just my preference and probably accounts for the fact that I don't get menshes as often (although I think I got one yesterday as the last menshee for Pick Up The Pieces - the good Lady Driver talked over it and I haven't had a chance to check on iPlayer).

Nothing wrong with either approach - in fact, I envy those who come up with so many great suggestions!

    Hiya Katy

My numero uno speako persona..or something like that

I am only grumpy to those who know me.. so I am told :)

    Usually quite daft.

And well done, I haven't had chance to say... you got your song played, the first time I came on here... my drive home had me shouting, thats Katy who said hello to me :)

  • Comment number 86.

Very later in today due to meetings. Really pleased to learn some blogpoppets are getting early prezzies to make life easier and Gill, I hope your knee gets better soon.

#70 Harry, LOL so have I started saving glass jars. I think it was Deebee talking about pickling pears that got me started and I haven't pickled anything. But got about 6 jars staring at me on a shelf in the cupboard.

I was hoping Simon was going to leave the party tunes for our party on 22nd :( He's maybe got something more exciting for us for then.

Hope your song gets chosen. I'm heading home shortly on the lookout for Thunder Snow but will be listening to the show.

    Catch you later

The Womgle are great! Loved the clips and being that I did not grow up in the UK, I'd never heard of them so fresh and new to me. Sweet show and could feel the nostalgia through the digital waves.

    My office party tune:

Is That All There Is? ~Peggy Lee

Enjoy the seasonal chilly evening everyone,

Aww so glad Ralph McTell won the folky song as I saw him a few weeks ago and when he sang Streets of London, six feet in front of me, with the guitar he's had since he was 19-years old, it gave me goose bumps... I still love it now! Thanks listeners!!! :o)

    Evening All

I missed most of the show, rehearsing with the band for our Christmas party tomorrow. I don't think we're going to be very good, but hopefully everyone will sing along anyway. Will have to listen again to Mother Superior's confession. Well done for any menshes, and commiserations to the menshless.

I did hear Ralph McTell though. I agree, FF - its a lovely song!

I've thought of a festive blog name, and I'm wondering when to change. Should I wait till the day of the blog party? Hmm... decisions...

Hope you're feeling better KatyMatey, and Gill, that the swelling in your leg has gone down.

Oh, and meant to say - Shona #84 yes it was me that did the pickled pears. We used a kilner jar - one of those with a clip thing over the top. But I do like pretty shaped jars, and often keep them if we buy any jam or whatever.
