Good Morning Each!

Nice thoughtful and thought provoking blog this morning, Simon. I tend to believe that life teaches us many lessons as we wend our way through it, and every one of our own experiences subtly alters the way we percieve what is about us. As we get older, we do seem to be prone to show, and feel, our emotions more distinctly and openly. I think it does indeed have a lot to do with friends and loved ones that have entered and left our worlds, sometimes with pain, sometimes not, but always leaving an indelible mark on our 'souls', for want of a better word.



I distictly remember as a teenager being highly amused when I caught my own dear Father trying to subtly wipe away an unexpected tear whilst watching 'Lassie Come Home'. What a wuss! Yet these days, I am just as likely to find myself turning on the waterworks at something such as, well, this blog for one thing. Lots of films and the telly can produce an optical moistening, and my son is as likely to rib me about it as I was with my Dad. I just think that these days, there is nowt wrong with the occasional brief sniffle, and it cleanses the spirit.



Crikey, where did that come from. Back with tunes in a bit.

Christmas decs John! Yes the old ones are the most treasured. We still have some that are about 50 years old, thats even older than me. LOL!



Talking of mishaps at Christmas, and disregarding the chaos of snow and hospital visits of last year... The biggest mishap I think I came across, was when the oven blew up late on Christmas eve.



With a monster turkey to cook and the only means of cooking it was on the barbie under a golf umbrella, it turned out to be an interesting time. What do you do? All the neighbours ovens were going to be working flat out as it was, no room for another turkey, for sure!



In the end, we were kindly offered the use of a neighbours oven as they were going away. It was a rare old sight though, me trotting up and down the road with my turkey baster in hand!

Re what gets me tearing up at Christmas - I'm with Simon on the Smith and Burrows song. The best new Christmas song to come out for year - it's lovely! Brought a lump to my throat the first time he played it on DT. And I agree with Lady_Stormrider #49 and Gill #50 about 'Keeping the dream alive'. Other than that, call me old fashioned but 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing' also makes me cry! Especially the last verse, with that soaring descant line. Which I can't sing, by the way - far too high! I always listen to the 'Nine lessons and carols' on Christmas Eve, and I feel cheated if they don't sing that one.

On the subject on getting teary, my boys tease me all the time about my penchant for crying at virtually anything. When watching tv/film if it gets to a sad bit, instead of watching it they turn and watch me to see if the ole waterworks are gonna make an appearance, the litle monkeys. Don't know why but I have become incredibly emotional. I have been known to cry at the 6 o'clock news.



#52 - Harry, when I hear Greg Lake, I always sing a song that we did in Primary School that was taken from a Schools music programme off the radio. I couldn't remember the name of the song but Harry I do believe it was Lieutenant Kije as the song starts "Kije was a Hussar bold"

I am with JPA on the getting teary thing. Anything can set me off. I cry at Strictly (and Mr P had a tear in his eye at Rachel Stevens' rumba a few years ago), practically every Disney film and "The Incredible Journey" requires a box of tissues from the outset. But the one that gets me every time is the scene in "Wild Geese" when they are all escaping in the plane but Richard Harris is left behind. He is running after the plane calling "Emil, Emil" (his son) as the spears start flying. I am a complete wreck at that.



Oh, and the end of Winnie the Pooh where somewhere in the Enchanted Wood a little boy and a bear will always be playing.

The absolute guarantee for me is Its a Wonderful Life - seeing George Bailey find out how much his life really worth is the tissue certainty.

CLP – Yes it is a most nice time of year Christmas, ok stressful for many what with buying presents & organising 'appenings. But the real meaning of Christmas is not about money but a religious meaning. Sadly many seem ter forget this.... but am glad yer getting the revs involved with yer most nice show.... Most nice CLP!!!!!!!

A love Christmas as it breaks up a cold and dark winter... Brings light with all the lights lit up.... And it breaks our routine all towards a day's rest and brings together people for parties/ family get together's – know what am sayin'!!!!!!

Ok I know some are alone at Christmas which makes this time of year the 'ardest to deal with... But overall.... Christmas is a magical time where even scrooge like local councils feel obliged ter join in and put up a few Christmas lights... organise Santa runs events in the town centre and so on.... And all this from a religious influence.... Religion is a VERY powerful thing and a force for good.... Sadly with many in our modern Britain not even realising it!!!!!!

I've been thinking about the whole getting emotional thing. I must admit I've never been a big crier - tending to bottle it all up inside (not necessarily a healthy thing). But as I've got older I've found myself getting teary eyed a lot more easily. What's that all about? Maybe as Simon says it's to do with innocence lost and past times...



And I'm absolutely with you re Winnie the Pooh, Alex! Did anyone here Simon's 5 Live film review show about 18 months ago when they were discussing Toy Story 3 and comparing it with Winnie the Pooh and growing up? Not a dry eye in the studio...

When I was 7 all within a year first my grandmother died, then my grandfather.... their 'ouse was sold that was full of 'appy memories for me from a toddler ter 7 years old.... and if that wasn't enough my father walked out and my parents got divorced!!!!!!!

My mother was left alone as a single parent with very little money!!!!!!!!!!!



There was some very difficult Christmas times after that.... Where I only 'ad my mother and my cat... No brothers or sisters and my mother 'as only a brother who doesn't keep in touch!!!!!!!!!



ALL 100% TRUE ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you don't know the story, it's about Bobby the little terrier who for 14 years guarded his master's grave in Greyfriar's Churchyard in Edinburgh and it always chokes me up! Bobby is buried quite close to his master in the same churchyard where he sat for 14 years!

Good afternoon all from a grey and cold Essex.



All this talk of emotions - I am getting more tearful the older I get!. Any of the carols like Silent Night,Away in a Manger, Little Donkey sung by little children in the school nativity play or Carols from Kings are enough to get me going! Also the Welsh National Anthem sung in the Millenium Stadium before a big rugby match is powerful stuff indeed!



Any film which involves animals, especially dogs, has to be accompanied by a box of tissues Haatchi, Turner and Hooch, Marley and Me etc.



But maybe the most surprising, to me at least, as I didn't see it coming was when ET moved when everyone thought he was dead! I was in bits much to the amusement of my Mr. Mind you, he is not averse to a little snuffle and nose blowing at certain films.

#94 I was their for Shane Williams last game for Wales on the 3rd Dec, 40 Welsh male voice choirs aprox 2000 of them provided the music at the start and in the interval...very moving sniff sniff

One for those frustrating times trying to locate the bulb on the Christmas lights that's stopping the rest from working....



U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm looking For



It will be an emotional Christmas this year. A spate of bereavements, many of them unexpected, will bring lots of tears to eyes. In fact, just typing that brings a lump to my throat. It's already been tough skipping address book entries or writing a card to one person instead of two.

#96 ((Hugs)) Driver, it's been that kind of year for us too. We lost the mister's mum in January, and the mister's cousin in October, both to cancer. I am also thinking of my grandfather, as it will be the 20th anniversary of his death on 20th December. This year has been a tough one for us, on so many different levels, I won't be sorry to say goodbye to it.

#96 I know what you mean Driver. We always raise a glass at Christmas lunch in memory of family members no longer with us, and the list seems to get longer each year (although thankfully we haven't lost anyone this year). It's a very poignant moment - we used to have large gatherings at my parents', these days it's just the four of us plus my Mum.
